Charlottesville, VA based Sons of Bill have a new album due out at the end of September, and they have been added to the growing and impressive line-up for this year’s Americana Music Festival in Nashville.  They are signed to the Nashville-based Thirty Tigers label, and although I am late to the game, I have been blown away by what I’ve heard so far.  This song is from their 2009 album One Town Away

I met Jenny Leigh at a Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray show at The Basement, and I really dig her music.

Second song from New Jersey band The Lie today and the third this week. Glorious rock and roll.

I don’t know where or how or when I added this to my playlist, but it’s freaking awesome. Jam band music for people (like me) who generally hate Jam band music.

More music from Mr. Doncker.  Smooth and soulful on a global scale.

10. “V. The Meaning of Things (The Dream Lives Ought to See)”/Left of Logic/In Formation

Philadelphia based live electronic music. Challenging and pretty darn cool.

11. “Hold Fast Your Dreams”/Marla Mase/Half-Life

A mellower side of Marla Mase with her trademark spoken word spiels. Another of my favorite records of the year.

12. “Summer in a New State”/Swear and Shake/Maple Ridge
Another of those wacky New York Americana bands that sound like they should come from the South. Oh, and they are one of the best of the whole wacky bunch!

13. “English Rose”/The Jam/All Mod Cons

14. “Bushwick Nights”/The Great American Novel/Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen – Section 5

The late great The Great American Novel burned bright and went out big with this Single/Outake/piece of awesomeness. Looking forward to what comes next from the various chapters of this great novel that ended way too soon.

So it is good to pause now and again.

As a blog, we here at E2TG (meaning me) continue to be amazed and grateful for all the great people who have read and been a part of this extended experiment. I’m always grateful for the now accepted ubiquity of the term curate (which it seemed to me used to be reserved for museums and such). Now, whenever I don’t have much time to comment on the songs I present, and I begin to wonder exactly what it is useful that I am doing, I can just remind myself that I am curating this amazing collection of music, and that makes me feel very special indeed….. 😉

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Return of the Living Dead Mix



Well… after a week long bout with the flu, I can safely say that I am back from the grave and ready to party!




Hall of Fame update – 1. I at least have a template for the Hall of Fame page entries.  I was beginning to work more on the page when I fell ill.  – doesn’t “fell ill” sound so sophisticated?  Let me tell you – the reality was pretty awful. 2. I came up with a list of notable omissions from my initial class of twenty – some of these were due to being first mentioned in the pre-blogger days, some due to alternate spellings affecting the tag count.  In any event, I will be adding those names soon.

p.s. I have a literal ton of songs waiting to be added to the active playlist.*

*confession: I have no clue how much a song weighs so I can’t truly say that I literally have a ton of songs to add… but it’s a bunch.

“Ella Guru” by XTC (from Fast ‘n’ Bulbous: a Tribute to Captain Beefheart.  Andy Partridge and company covering Captain Beefheart! What could possibly go wrong?  Answer: Not a damned thing!)

“Pale Blue Eyes” by The Velvet Underground (from The Velvet Underground.  You may recall that I began surveying this classic album before Lou Reed passed away.  Pale Blue Eyes is truly one of the most beautiful songs, and it is one of my favorites among a stellar list of amazing VU songs.)

“Goddamn Lonely Love” by Joseph Mooradian (via Soundcloud.  A cover of a Drive by Truckers song which ex-DBT Jason Isbell released on his Live from Alabama album. I really dig this version by the talented Mr. Mooradian.)



“Officer” by Saint Rich (from Beyond the Drone. A newish band formed by Delicate Steve main guy Steve Marion who plays drums here joined by Delicate Steve touring guitarist Christian Peslak.  This was one of the free tracks from Amazon at some point, and I honestly didn’t know anything about the band until this morning.  I really dig this song though.)

“Humdrum Blues” by The Growlers (from Paste Fall Pre(View) 2013.  The Growlers are a California 60s inspired Folk, Surf, whatever band. I can’t find that this song is on an album yet. But you can get it and other great music on the latest Paste/Noisetrade Sampler:)

“It Ain’t Easy” by David Bowie (from The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.  Did you know that this was a cover of a song by American songwriter Ron Davies who was the older brother of singer/songwriter Gail Davies? Me either. Now we both know.)

“Fooled by the Heart” by Nancy Apple (from The Memphis Belles – Past, Present and Future. I had the good fortune to meet Nancy Apple (The Queen of Memphis Country Music) a few weeks back at The Family Wash in Nashville when she played with Tim Lee 3 and other as part of the Troubadour Blues Roadshow. I got to share two of my favorite Memphis stories with her. This song is an awesome introduction to her music – for the uninitiated. The video I added to today’s Playlist is of a song she did the night I saw her – (the video is not from that night just to be clear.)”

“Barbarella” by The Bongos (from Numbers With Wings. The Bongos reunited on stage to help close the doors on the legendary New Jersey club Maxwell’s. They announced that night that a new Bongos album was coming soon. Phantom Train is here.  I added that along with the classic Numbers With Wings to the E2TG Weekly Store. Feed or Begin your Bongos obsession now.  And yes, Barbarella is the title of the 1968 cult film starring Jane Fonda – based on a comic book.)
 
“The Fall of Man” by Andrew Ferris (from Yellow Lorry. Andrew Ferris is a British born singer/songwriter currently based in Austria.  He connected to me via Google+.  By the way, I have a nifty new URL for my Google+ account.  Anyway, Yellow Lorry is the debut album by Andrew Ferris which has been out just over a month.  His first EP was called Red Lorry.  I’m really enjoying this album so check him out.)
 
“A Song for Leonard Cohen” by Amanda Shires (from Down Fell the Doves.  Just about as close as it gets to perfection.  The awesome Amanda Shires who Nashville is proud to claim doing a long about the legendary Leonard Cohen. And it is a song that I think he would like.  I couldn’t find a video for this song, so instead, I included one of Amanda Shires singing a Leonard Cohen song.)

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Scary (Good) Mix

I never quite have it together enough for a holiday-themed shuffle… but today, the Randomizer came up with alien arachnids, electrical discharges, monks, extinct birds, and puppets.  Which can create some pretty frightening images if you use your imagination.

“Afraid to Die” by Monks of Mellonwah (from Afraid to Die.  The band is releasing their new album in three parts.  We featured the first part – Ghost Stories over the summer, and Afraid to Die- the second part was released at the beginning of this month.  This is the title track.  Really like the Monks of Mellonwah)

“Confidence” by The Dodos (from Carrier. A San Francisco indie band.  The album Carrier was released back in August.)

“The Greatest Lie Ever Told” by Puppet Rebellion (from Chemical Friends EP. Puppet Rebellion are a band. They are from Manchester. England – not the Tennessee town where Bonaroo is held. They formed in 2013 – which is this year. Chemical Friends is their first release – a three song EP. “The Greatest Lie Ever Told” is one of those three songs.  It fairly awesomely rocks.  I came to their music via a Twitter Follow – near as I remember.  Check them out.)

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Ring True Mix

Music from the morning….

Drivin’ N Cryin’ frontman Kevn Kinney released his classic solo debut, MacDougle Blues back in 1990.  It features Kinney’s trademark raspy vocals on top of plaintive, folksy music. Gotta Get Out of Here is the first song in today’s shuffle.

Chris Nathan is a Nashville-based soulful singer songwriter.  He has released a few EPs and albums, but the song we have today Never Needed Nothing is from a Demo. It’s a cool song.

We have a video of a different Chris Nathan song.



I have noticed an interesting phenomenon, whenever the shuffle includes a David Bowie song (particularly if it is a Ziggy Stardust cut), my page views experience a dramatic uptick. I guess there are a lot of Bowie fans out there.  If you have reached my blog because of the mention of David Bowie – well welcome and please stick around and check out all of our great artists. I am not including a Bowie song in a crass attempted to garner page-views – the shuffle has a mind of it’s own, but I would never turn anyone away.  Today, we have the demo version of Lady Stardust from one of the Ziggy reissues.

 

John Doe of X fame has had a long and celebrated solo career outside of the L.A. punk legends and their spin-off project the Knitters. Today’s song, The Golden State, is from his 2007 album A Year in the Wilderness and features Kathleen Edwards.

One of the most original and fun bands we’ve had the opportunity to feature this year is Nashville based Cheer Up Charlie Daniels.  The song that first turned us on to them is the raucous rave-up called Bunsen Burner Baby Blues which can be found on the Live in ’79 record.
“Keep the beacon burnin’ ’cause it’s a blind blind world” from Beacon by Lone Justice from their second album Shelter.  I have to admit, Beacon is not a song I was as familiar with as other Lone Justice songs, but listening to it this morning, I decided it was exactly what I need to hear.
 Could not find a video for Beacon, so here is the title track to Shelter.
 In my opinion, proof of the unfairness of the world can be found in the fact that Let’s Active did not achieve global domination.  Again, just my take, but as I see it, Afoot and Cypress represent near pure pop perfection in the best possible way.  I listened to the stunning Ring True this morning, and I find it difficult to explain how happy this song made me feel. 



Irish rockers, U2 were a huge part of my musical development, and by the time of Rattle and Hum, I was beginning to lose interest as my tastes evolved and expanded. So when Achtung Baby was released in 1991, the opening salvo was like a swift kick.  This stands as one of my favorite albums, I think, primarily for the joyful surprise it provided.  I have to wonder if U2 has any more joyful surprises in their bag of tricks….  We have So Cruel in the shuffle today.



We close out our shuffle with the legendary Australian rock band, Hoodoo Gurus from their second album Mars Needs Guitars! with the lively and fun song, In the Wild.

The shuffle monster inside my phone’s music player decided to grace me with another track from the fantastic The Ghost of John Henry album by Sci-Fi Romance.  Today we have Broken Word which contains the awesome line:

I don’t make it any secret that the Minutemen were one of my favorite bands of all time, or that Double Nickels on the Dime is one of my favorite albums.  Today we have Theatre is the Life of Me.

When I moved to Memphis in 1988, I remember seeing posters all over town for shows by a band called Human Radio.  At that time, I had no clue who or what Human Radio was, but by the time I moved to Nashville in 1991, I knew and coincidentally, around that time, Human Radio decided to move to Nashville.  The band release one amazing album (to my knowledge) – the self titled release from which today’s song My First Million is taken.

And finally, let’s close out today’s shuffle with a song that was first released as a b-side to David Bowie’s 1975 single Space Oddity.  Velvet Goldmine was recorded during the Ziggy Stardust sessions and appeared on the 1990 Rycodisc release of that classic album – which is where I came upon it.
