Friday Morning Music Shuffle – It Ain’t Easy Mix

Wow! I can’t believe another month has come and gone. It’s November! 

I’m going to start something new on Monday – unless I don’t.  In the meantime, I have a nifty ten song Shuffle to send you into your weekend.

“Humdrum Blues” by The Growlers (from Paste Fall Pre(View) 2013.  The Growlers are a California 60s inspired Folk, Surf, whatever band. I can’t find that this song is on an album yet. But you can get it and other great music on the latest Paste/Noisetrade Sampler:)

“It Ain’t Easy” by David Bowie (from The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.  Did you know that this was a cover of a song by American songwriter Ron Davies who was the older brother of singer/songwriter Gail Davies? Me either. Now we both know.)

“Fooled by the Heart” by Nancy Apple (from The Memphis Belles – Past, Present and Future. I had the good fortune to meet Nancy Apple (The Queen of Memphis Country Music) a few weeks back at The Family Wash in Nashville when she played with Tim Lee 3 and other as part of the Troubadour Blues Roadshow. I got to share two of my favorite Memphis stories with her. This song is an awesome introduction to her music – for the uninitiated. The video I added to today’s Playlist is of a song she did the night I saw her – (the video is not from that night just to be clear.)”

I still think it’s a pretty cool thing to reconnect with a friend from high school, find out they are putting out an album, and then discover that said album is so freaking brilliant. I understand that James is putting together a band for some shows… coming soon to a town near you – assuming you are near a town where he is going to play)
 
“Barbarella” by The Bongos (from Numbers With Wings. The Bongos reunited on stage to help close the doors on the legendary New Jersey club Maxwell’s. They announced that night that a new Bongos album was coming soon. Phantom Train is here.  I added that along with the classic Numbers With Wings to the E2TG Weekly Store. Feed or Begin your Bongos obsession now.  And yes, Barbarella is the title of the 1968 cult film starring Jane Fonda – based on a comic book.)
 
“The Fall of Man” by Andrew Ferris (from Yellow Lorry. Andrew Ferris is a British born singer/songwriter currently based in Austria.  He connected to me via Google+.  By the way, I have a nifty new URL for my Google+ account.  Anyway, Yellow Lorry is the debut album by Andrew Ferris which has been out just over a month.  His first EP was called Red Lorry.  I’m really enjoying this album so check him out.)
 
“A Song for Leonard Cohen” by Amanda Shires (from Down Fell the Doves.  Just about as close as it gets to perfection.  The awesome Amanda Shires who Nashville is proud to claim doing a long about the legendary Leonard Cohen. And it is a song that I think he would like.  I couldn’t find a video for this song, so instead, I included one of Amanda Shires singing a Leonard Cohen song.)

“Saint” by Mission South (from Migration Vol. 2 – Three kids from DC – Saw them this week at The Basement under Grimey’s. Such a FUN set. Great sound, great energy. A true highlight on a night of highlights.)

“Bloodstream” by Firehorse (from Pills From Strangers. Not fIREHOSE nor Firehouse (thank God), but a nifty indie band from Brooklyn – think the airy, groovy side of Indie music)

“A Silent Moment” by Elephant Stone (from Elephant Stone – another mind melter)

“Torn Maps” by Bosnian Rainbows (a relatively new project of Omar Rodriguez Lopez of The Mars Volta. Electronic, heavy, and pretty darn cool)

“Baby’s Gone to Memphis” by Mark Robinson (from Have Axe – Will Groove. Let’s all go to Memphis… or at least play the Blues…)

“Two Beads at the End” by the Minutemen (from Double Nickels on the Dime.  Sometimes it’s good to go back and listen to some of the music that first really moved you… oh, D.!)

“Love is a Rose” by Linda Ronstadt (Linda sings Neil… does it get any better?)

“Chili” by Dog Without Warning (from Bark.  One of my favorites on the Bark EP. A cautionary tale of sorts)

“Full Five Paces” by The Autumn Defense (From their debut The Green Hour. Man ‘o man I dig the gorgeous 60s sound of this band – saw them back in September at Grimey’s Americanarama show)

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Invitation to Robbery Mix

As you may or may not know, I create a playlist and let the Shuffle function determine the mix which I call my Morning Shuffle. Am I sometimes tempted to take control and create the mix myself? Sure. But, what I like about the Shuffle mode is the way randomness tends to parallel real life.  Sometimes there seem to be patterns – like last week’s day of several animal themed tracks in a row. Sometimes – like today – there is no discernible pattern. Just a collection of cool songs – old and new in a variety of styles and moods. You know kind of like life….





Today’s shuffle emerges – after the JUMP

“Back in the Saddle” by Mark Robinson (from Quit Your Job – Play Guitar.  This is top-notch Music City Blues from one of our favorite artists.)

“Safe European Home” by The Clash (from Give ’em Enough Rope. One of my favorite Clash songs. A classic.)

“Stay True” by Moovalya (from Moovalya. One of the most recent “discoveries”. Moovalya have a high energy punk/metal sound. They are from Phoenix. )

“You Ain’t Alone” by Alabama Shakes (This song is included on a recent ATO Fall Sampler which I  grabbed off of Noisetrade.  It is a track on the Athens, Alabama band’s break-through album, Boys and Girls.)

“I’ll Be Gone” by The Black Clouds (from Better Days.  This New Jersey Grungy/punk band came onto my radar earlier this year.  I featured several songs from this album earlier in the year, but it’s been a little while since they appeared in a shuffle.  It’s good to have the reminder of how much I dig their music.  Check ’em out)

“Scream (reprise)” by Marla Mase (from the Speak Deluxe album.  A nice way to end today’s shuffle – a reprise of the outstanding song Scream.  Marla Mase is another artist to come to my attention in 2013, and she is one of the most creative and original artists I have ever come across.  If you haven’t – check out her music.)

“My Favorite Picture of You” by Guy Clark (what can I say? Guy Clark y’all.)

“Closed Hand, Full of Friends” by Foy Vance (from his newish album Joy of Nothing. Foy Vance is Irish and I feel like I’m late to the party on this guy, but I’m glad to be here)

“What’s the Matter Baby” by Mark Robinson (from Have Axe – Will Groove – when I listen to Mark Robinson’s take on the Blues – the answer to the song’s title is “Not much..just keep playing”)

“You’re Not There” by Tim Lee 3 (from Devil’s Rope. Always a treat when Tim Lee 3 end up on my shuffle)

“From this Valley” by The Civil Wars (from this year’s The Civil Wars. One can only hope the band will resolve their own civil wars and get back to making more music like this)

“Mi Burro Esta En Fuego” by Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray (“My Donkey is On Fire” two of my favorite trios are in the Shuffle today – Tim Lee 3 and Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray – yes they are a trio. They will be back in Nashville as part of the “New Faces” night at The Basement)

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Retreat Mix

Extended drive this a.m. means an extended Shuffle – so let’s get to it – jump to the shuffle after the break



“Love is God” by Majestico (See – this is what Rock and Roll sounds like. Pure adrenaline and fun. Nashville is home to some incredible bands who do not featured a banjo or a fiddle. Majestico are on the Jeffery Drag Records label)

“Come to My Party” by Black Joe Lewis (this version is off of the recently released Eastside Manor Sessions which is out now on Noisetrade. Black Joe Lewis are red hot right now, and they recently played a show here in Nashville with Jeffery Drag Records flagship artist Bad Cop)

“Nature Without Man” by Minutemen (from the classic 1984 album Double Nickels on the Dime. It’s been nearly 28 years since the world lost D. Boon, and yet this music sounds as fresh as ever.)

“Camellia” by Jesse Turits (another from the Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen compilation. Good stuff from this young Jersey singer/songwriter)

“Travelling Alone” by Jason Isbell (from one of this year’s best – Southeastern comes this heartbreaking song of yearning.)

“Never Too Far” by Moovalya (the first of two rockers from the self-titled album from this band from Arizona)

“Last Day” by The Danbury Lie (another from ?. The Danbury Lie are playing with The Grimm Generation on October 25 at café nine in New Haven, Connecticut. Two of our favorites sharing a stage!)

“Somebody Like You” by Katey Laurel (the Denver singer/songwriter with a song from her From Here album – gorgeous music.)

“Letting Go” by New Victorians (from II. Cinematic indie music)

“To the Throne” by Moovalya (The single from the album)

“Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis” by Neko Case (a stunning cover of the Tom Waits song.)

“Retreat” by Minutemen (another by the post-punk legends)

“After Eliot” by Johnny Flynn (from Country Mile. Johnny Flynn just writes and sings some amazingly awesome melodies)

“Pillow Talk” by Wild Child (the title track from the album by Austin Based Wild Child)

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Spice of Life Mix

As usually seems to be the case, I added a ton of new music to my active playlist last night, and not one of the new songs ended up in this morning’s shuffle. Rest assured they will turn up sooner or later.

 
 



What’s exciting to me about today’s shuffle is that every song in the mix is either new, relatively new or at least new to me. It also excites me that there is such an incredible variety to the music.

“March” by prattle on, rick. (another from A Decade Begins. My shuffle function has been in love with prattle on, rick lately, and I couldn’t be happier. There is a gentle uplifting quality to his sound that has been much needed.  A Decade Begins features an instrumental song for each month of the year. Here in Tennessee, March still has the potential for extreme cold, but we also get our first real taste of the coming spring. I felt that hope in this composition)  (Nashville, TN)

“Tha’s what She Say” by Wild Child (from Pillow Talk. A love the vintage sound of this song – complete with the doo wop harmonies.) (Austin, TX)

“Stuck” by The Coal Men (from Escalator. To my chagrin, I missed last night CD release party for this record, so think of this as a consolation prize. I’m continuing to love this album, and I encourage you – dear reader – to check it out.) (Nashville, TN)

“Thin Edge of a Knife” by James Crawford (from James Crawford. With release just a couple of days away, I’m happy another song from this remarkable album came up. There is a Tin Pan Alley quality to this song in particular – a lament of sorts for the things we used to do. I also see this album as another vindication for the openness I’ve tried to practice in writing this blog. With every bit of new music that comes my way – no matter how it gets to me, I have trained myself to be prepared to be blown away. In ways, I don’t completely understand, this approach has allowed me to hear some amazing music. Yes, occasionally, I will check out the music of someone who follows me on Twitter and discover it to be mostly poor quality covers of overplayed Popular songs. But to a much greater extent, I hear talented people  – putting themselves on the line, and trying to make genuine heart-felt music. So, when someone I know from my high school days says he is putting out an album – hell yes, I want to hear it. And in this case, I want to share it with all of you.)  (Nashville, TN)

“The Mountain” by The Black Market Merchants (from the Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen compilation. I think I first came across this hard blues rock band from NYC via Papa Tune’s blog. Even if that is not the case, the odds make it a no-brainer guess.) (New York, NY)

“Hope and Promise” by prattle on, rick. (from Some Quiet Majesty. More prattle on, rick. love from my shuffle function. This one is from the recently released new album.)  (Nashville, TN)

“It’s Not That I Still Love You” by Oh! My Blackbird (another from the Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen Comp. This alt-folk trio make music that is lyrical and fun) (New York, NY)

“Fuct Up” by Moovalya (from Moovalya. Sometimes you just need to rock really hard. You just do. You know me, I love all kinds of music, and I am a big fan of some really sweet, gentle, soft, melodic and beautiful songs. But, because variety is the spice of life… this band came to my attention  via a Twitter Follow, and this is the first song of theirs to show up in a Shuffle. You are Welcome.) (Phoenix, AZ)
