Saturday Morningish Music Shuffle – Spring Cleaning Mix

A rare Saturday shuffle to make up for not posting yesterday… life happens – you know….

It’s been a very interesting week in many ways.  Musically, since we last connected, Thursday night, I went to week 3 of 5 of Campfire Propaganda.  It was a blast with the usual suspects – who are some pretty awesome songwriters: Brian Wright, Tim Easton, Megan Palmer, Darrin Bradbury, and Nellie Clay plus this week joined by Matt Haeck.  Then, I headed to The Family Wash to see Bark (Tim and Susan of Tim Lee 3) play an awesome set and then back up Jim Mize along with Laurie Stirratt.

Last night, it was the Jon Latham CD Release Show at Belcourt Taps.  Darrin Bradbury opened.  A really fun time.  Jon was joined by Haley Dreis, Josh Morris, Shawn Conerton, and Sean Quinn. And he even asked me to emcee the show.  There was tons going on musically around Nashville last night, and I though I don’t like that I missed some of the things that I missed, I know I was at the right place.

Just some tunes I listened to while I did some spring cleaning this morning. And, the answer is yes, I do know that it is mid-October.  What can I say, it has been a crazy, busy summer…

We plunge on into another work week… Today – as often we do, we have a wildly diverse shuffle filled with music that no one in their right mind would put into the same mix of songs… Which seems a good time to remind you that the song selections and ordering is always done randomly by the shuffle function of my music player… (To be fair, however, I do pick the songs that go into the overall playlist from which the shuffle function draws)….

“How We Be” by Sinkane

From Brooklyn by way of The Sudan. Coming to us via a World Café Session. The title track from the album Mean Love which was released about a year ago.  A groovy way to the start the week of music.

“I Wanna Be Your Dog” by The Stooges

The Stooges were so far ahead of their time that some 45 years later, they are still ahead of their time – or maybe they are just outside of all time. From their 1969 self-titled debut album… today, we have the iconic song…

“Sugarface” by Bird Peterson (ft. Astronautalis)

This song came to me via a Noisetrade Sampler released for SXSW of artists playing the day parties.  The song is on Bird Peterson’s solo debut called Plume which was released back in July.

“Revolt” by The Unravelling

Some more hard, progressive rock from the album Tear a Hole in the Collective Vision – the latest album by Calvary band, The Unravelling.

“You Never Even Call Me By My Name” by Steve Goodman

This song was written by Goodman and John Prine and most famously recorded by David Allen Coe.   Further proof that the Country Music establishment has been flawed and problematic for as far back as 40 years ago.

“The Shrubbery’s Dead” by Government Cheese

The song comes to us via the epic compilation of classic era Nashville Rock called, Return to Elliston Square (1979-1989). Government Cheese are from Bowling Green, but earned their status with Nashville’s Rock elite.  Fortuitously, this song came up the shuffle at the beginning of  week that includes a Music City Roots benefit for Tommy Womack (of Government Cheese) and a Saturday reunion of the seminal 1980s Nashville band, Raging Fire who are also on the Return to Elliston Square record..  The MCR benefit will include performances by Jason and the Scorchers, Webb Wilder, Will Kimbrough, and Dan Baird.  This song became one The Cheese’s most well known tracks.

“Warp Drive” by Black Doctor Jr.

A Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen Band that we have featured before.  Back in August Black Doctor Jr. announced they were taking an extended break to work on other projects. The track was released as a Single back in March.

“The Eye” by Brandi Carlile

From a Noisetrade Bonnaroo sampler, this lovely song come from an album called The Firewatcher’s Daughter which was released back in March.

“Poor Boy” by David Jacobs-Strain

David Jacobs-Strain is a virtuoso guitar player that I was introduced to at the Safety Harbor Song Fest earlier this year.  This is his 8 minute take on the Blues standard.

“Summer’s Kiss” by The Afghan Whigs

First up… The Afghan Whigs with a song from their 1996 album Black Love…

“Too Many Bridges to Cross Over” by Jesse and Noah

From the EP Brethren.  Jesse and Noah Bellamy with (if I am not mistaken in my hasty research) a cover of a song written by Dallas Frazier which Merle Haggard included on his classic album Mama Tried.

“Love Letters” by Tiffany Huggins Grant

Jonquil Child, the album from which this song is taken, is due out tomorrow (July 7).  I seriously and sincerely recommend that you get this album when you can.  I’ve been listening for a while, and I love it.  Tiffany Huggins Grant is an absolutely amazing vocalist.

“Kid” by KATO (ft. Joanie Payne)

Kato is a rapper/hip-hop artist from L.A.  This is from an EP called Summer in Space Beach.

“Barbarism Begins at Home” by The Smiths

Nearly seven minutes of The Smiths from Meat is Murder.

“Rainbow Sign” by The Buckstankle Boys

From an album called The New Young Fogies Vol. 1.  The Buckstankle Boys are a Bluegrass/Old Time band from Mt. Airy, North Carolina.

“Live for Now” by Daphne Willis

Daphne Willis was one of the brightest lights at the Safety Harbor Songfest, I attended earlier this year.  She is from Nashville by way of Chicago.  This uplifting song was the lead track from her 2008 album Matter of Time.

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Barefoot on the Dancefloor Mix

Traversed snow and ice and cold to witness the birth of a new East Nashville musical happening at the Mad Donna’s Loft… a super-serious, super-cool songwriting thing (the name is still being bandied about), but who needs a name when you have Joe Fletcher, Brian Wright, and Darrin Bradbury playing their awesome songs to a small but dedicated audience of super-serious music fans (including some other great musicians).  Here’s to many more of these happenings and much better weather for them.  Hats off to the awesome Terry Rickards for making this thing happen…

Since I traversed the snow last night, I kind of had to do it this morning… guilty conscience if I said I couldn’t make it to work… but I had an awesome sound track for this slippery and frigid journey…

Another excellent song from Matt Prater’s latest album Tables and Chairs recorded in Mussel Shoals, Alabama.

“Made to be Broken” by Soul Asylum

The title track from Soul Asylum’s second album released in 1986 one of three releases for the band in that year…

A brief instrumental partial title track from Scattered Moments of Connection.  In lieu of this song, I included a video of  the epic The Great Jester.  Thirty seconds for like eleven minutes seemed like a fair trade off.

“Wish I Was in Heaven Sitting Down” by Bark

Tim and Susan Lee could have named their side project Tim Lee 2, but they went with Bark.  This is from the debut Bark EP which is having it’s release celebrated (along with the new TL3 album 33 1/3 and the new album by Kevin Abernathy) with a triple release show at Scruffy City Hall in Knoxville this very night.  This song is an R.L. Burnside cover. 

“Revolution On the Rocks” by Gumball

A bit of 90s alternative rock from NYC, two of the members of Gumball were previously (and briefly) part of Dinosaur Jr. This was the lead track on the band’s 1994 third and final studio album called Revolution on Ice.

“Brand New Cadillac” by The Clash

From London Calling.  This was a cover of a 1950s British Rock and Roll song by Vince Taylor.

“Crazy American” by Syd Straw

From Syd Straw’s 1989 solo debut, Surprise.  Surprise is one of my favorite albums of all time.

“Train in Vain”  by The Clash

Originally a hidden bonus track on London Calling (subtitled Stand By Me in the US because we Yanks were too dumb to handle a song whose name wasn’t the most repeated phrase). Also not called “Stand by Me” because everyone is too dumb to figure out it is not the Ben E. King song.  Man I love this song!

“Blue Sky Mine” by Midnight Oil

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Brand New Phone Mix

So, I got  my new phone that is even smarter than I am…. I haven’t set up playlists so I shuffled all the songs on my memory card.  By the way, the picture above, was my view as I began my walk this morning.

 Started the shuffle with a song I picked out.  Sometimes, you just need some pure decadent nastiness to start your morning, and who is better to deliver a good dirty song than our old friends, The End Men with the appropriately titled A Dirty Song from their first EP Build It Up.  New music is eminent from The End Men as 2013 gets underway – so stay tuned in…

While the original line-up of Lone Justice did not make it past the first album, there second album Shelter was pretty darn good and produced one of my all-time favorite songs, the gorgeous Dixie Storms.

I’m Gonna Make You Love Me was originally on the 2000 album Smile by The Jayhawks.  It also appeared on the band’s 2009 compilation Music from The North Country – The Jayhawks Anthology.

Nashville’s own Lambchop released their latest album earlier this year. It’s called Mr. M and we have the lovely and tragic, If Not I’ll Just Die to close out this historic shuffle.

Early Saturday Morning Music Shuffle – After Midnight Mix

Hey all, hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving, or for you non-USA people, a great Thursday.  Anyway, I was wrapping somethings up, and listening to some of the playlist I named, Highlights Unplayed which features songs I have downloaded or added to the MP3 player since July but which did not come up on a Morning Shuffle.  So, before I shuffle off to bed, let’s see what comes up:

Andrew Osenga – Nashville based singer-songwriter, ex of the Normals released a new album back in September, and the more I hear from it, the more I like it.  The album is called Leonard, The Lonely Astronaut, and this early morning, we have Only Man in the World.


Chicago based, mellow, jazzy alt-rockers, The Sea and Cake also released a new album back in September, called Runner. We have the second song from that album which is called Harps.


Finally, Brandi Carlile released her fifth album, Bear Creek, back in June.  Keep Your Heart  Young is one of the many stand out tracks on that album.  By the way, if you clicky on the little album cover below, you can get Bear Creek for just $3.99 right now at Amazon.
