I know it’s going to be a good morning mix when it begins with the inimitable Don Ryan. What can you say about a guy who loves ICP, Townes, Pantera, Nickelback, and One Direction* and who makes great music that manages to not really sound like any of those artists*.

“Top of the World” by Don Ryan (recorded live in the studio. It’s so good to be getting some new music from Don Ryan and company – looking forward to more.)
“Get in Line” by Ron Sexsmith (for some reason, I always get Ron Sexsmith and Charlie Sexton mixed up. Musically, they are not similar so it must be the sex in the name. I’ve always gotten mixed up when it comes to sex.)
“Piece of Peace” by Marla Mase (From Scream (Deluxe) – one of our favorite albums of the year)
“Pull My Coat” by Mark Robinson (from Have Axe – Will Groove – another favorite album of the year. A great blues guitarist from (East) Nashville)
“Infatuation” by Dog Without Warning (from Bark – yet another of our faves – I love this song)

One of the highlights of CXCW 2013 was the coast to coast submissions from Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray. Yuma Wray also won the Beardliest Beard Award. Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray are heading out on tour. Check out the dates and more goodies by heading over to Popa’s Tunes.

Dog Without Warning were one of my big take-aways from CXCW this year. I began featuring their Go Girl album. When the band contacted me to give their new EP a listen, I was blown away. Not only was this a huge change of direction, it was also an excellent record with some memorable songs.

In the Shuffle
“Corn for Cash” by Alvin Band (from Mantis Preying)
For me, every mix is unique and has value. Is this the best ever mix? Probably not, that will be Monday or some other time (or many other times in the future). This is a good mix – a damn good mix. Why? ‘Cause it has some of my all time favorites, a couple of brand new (to me) songs that I really dig, a nifty cover, a diverse but not crazily diverse mixture of songs (although I love me some crazily diverse mixtures), and it forces me to break a long-standing officially unofficial blog policy…. but we’ll get to all that.
“Mission Bells” by Susan James (One of my favorite albums of 2013 so far is Driving Into the Sun. This is awesome California folksy rock music with a mellow vibe. Americana, but California-style Americana, and it’s a fantastic album)
“Drinkin’ Problem” by Lori McKenna (I think I may have gotten this from a Popa Tunes compilation – I noticed he was a fan of her music page on Facebook. I am too. This is a great song. Massachusetts Country Music. Nice.
“Ate” by Alvin Band (From a Noisetrade compilation that includes songs from several different Alvin Band albums. I’m realty growing to dig this music.)
“The Music in My Headphones” by Telepathic Teddy Bear (When someone called Telepathic Teddy Bear follows you on Twitter, you follow back. When they have music for download, you download. You don’t know why you do this, but you do. And, you are glad you did. I’m glad I did.)
“Into the Mines” by The End Men (The opening track on The End Men’s latest album, Play With Your Toys, makes big promises and prepares you for something beyond what you would expect from the band. “Into the Mines” seals the deal. A chillingly dark tale to be sure. Remember, this is only a show, but it’s a show you do not want to miss…

“Cool Me Down” by Promised Land Sound from Summer Sampler 2013 (Jeffery Drag Records)
Jeffery Drag Records is a pretty bitchin’ cool label based here in Nashville. It is the mad brain child of Bad Cop front man Adam Anyone Moult. Last year some time, we reported that Jeffery Drag had become part of the French Kiss Label Group. Anyway, they have this new compilation out on band camp – click on the picture of Promised Land Sound to get to that compilation – and it’s a pretty great mix of music. Bad Cop, Natural Child, Majestico, and Useless Eaters. Plus it’s got this band. Promised Land Sound (or Promised Land – I’m kind of confused…) are really great. Hell, they are “Jack White digs them” great (they put out a 7″ on his Third Man label).
“Old School Friends” by Honeyhoney from American Songwriter Sessions (originally on the band’s 2011 album Billy Jack)
Per their Facebook Page, Honeyhoney are from Nashvillle, but now live in Los Angeles. This song left me wanting to hear more from this band. It’s a song that sounds like a classic, the minute you first lay ears on it.
“Changing” by The Gypsy West from Accomplices III: No Barcodes (2013)
Another of our favorites of 2013. We reviewed this record early in the year. The EP is the finale of a trilogy of songs that tell the story of a revolution. This is the opening song from this EP and highlights the power and the creativity of this Brooklyn band.
Finally – at some point, I made a solemn vow, or an idle promise … I honest don’t remember the circumstances, but I made a promise that I honestly thought would be easy to keep. But, today, I find my self (sort of) breaking that promise. There are only a hand full of bands for which I would even consider breaking that promise.
“Boyfriend” (Justin Bieber Cover) by Valued Customer from “Fun Covers”
It helps that this isn’t so much a cover as it is a deconstruction. I do love me some Valued Customer…. I don’t have a video of the song, but I have a video of Patrick from Valued Customer covering another song – plus another cover of this hit song by another familiar face.. You’ll have to watch the Playlist below to find out.

“Seasons” by Beijing from Night (2013)
I believe we’ve completed our tour of this album by Connecticut band Beijing. A very cool record – and the band’s name written in lower case letters has three dotted letters in a row.
“Don’t Give Up On Me” by The Dirty Guv’nahs from Somewhere Beneath These Southern Skies (2012)
To me The Dirty Guv’Nahs are what 70s Southern Rock would sound like if it had naturally progressed to today. There is something laid back about this Knoxville band, but it’s also good to see that they can Rock out when they need to. Grab this one at Noisetrade and don’t forget to Tip.
August 6 – Nashville… overcast skies, rising humidity, but still an ever so slight chill in the air. Changing lanes, changing gears, but it all still seems the same. Perception in the mind’s eye. Do we have the power to change our destiny or are we merely pawns in a cosmic and eternal game, we don’t even understand? And what does it matter? Does it matter?
Lost in my thoughts – at times dark, at times trivial. Okay – often trivial. Seeking inspiration. Finding it in the diverse music of people from all over the world. Different voices, different musical choices. For some music is a commodity, for me it is a life blood.

“Leader of Men” by Let’s Active (The Let’s Active retrospective continues, and I am reminded of the genius of Mitch Easter and company. Next time, I hear somebody talking about how “bad” music was in the 80s, I plan to put on Cypress and Afoot and put them to shame.)
“On My Way” by The Melodic (The Melodic are a Folk/Roots/Latin band from South London. This song came my way via a ANTI records sampler from Noisetrade).
“Look Around” by Callaghan (Callaghan is from Atlanta, GA. Such an amazingly beautiful voice and sound. As I was listening to this, I had to detour through downtown Nashville via a different route, and this song provided a great soundtrack. Also via Noisetrade)
“Morning Gown” by T-Model Ford (A REAL DEAL Blues legend, T-Model Ford died last month at the age of… 94? He didn’t remember the exact date of his birth…)

Alvin Band hails from Phoenix, Arizona. They have a sampler out now on Noisetrade. Rainbow Road is due out August 20 and a complimentary record, Banshee Boardwalk will be released by the end of the year. The song name drops the visionary director of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Dr. Strangelove, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, A Clockwork Orange etc.)

Another one via Noisetrade – envision a painting of Jesus that resembles Richard Marx. Envision needing this Jesus to be there for you….
“Run Myself Into the Ground” by Jessica Lea Mayfield original version from Tell Me (2011) – this stripped down version from American Songwriter: The Best of American Songwriter Sessions (2013) via Noisetrade
Jessica Lea Mayfield has an affinity for 90s Rock and 70s/80s Bluegrass. Here at E2TG we support this unique juxtaposition of influences. It helps that she is one hell of a good songwriter.

Just put this song in your earhole and marvel…. whether you have loved Let’s Active for years or are just catching up, this is near-perfect music for an imperfect world. RIP Faye Hunter….
