Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Last Hurrah? Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js

Well, it’s Friday again, and we’ve reached what will likely be the final Morning Shuffle of 2012.  As I mentioned yesterday, I loaded up my new memory card with a random sampling of my digital music collection.  I left some space for all of the great new music to come in 2013.

UPDATE on Band of the Year Voting:  As of the time I am writing this post, we’ve had in the neighborhood of 1750 votes.  Brooklyn based The Disappointment are holding a 5% point leave over Skeletons in the Piano who are from Upstate New York.  Currently, New York band The Great American Novel are running third.  You’ve got a couple more days to vote. Voting will end just before Midnight (Central Time) on Sunday December 30.  Also, we need about 200 more votes to surpass our total vote count for last years inaugural Band of the Year poll.  So keep the votes coming.  Here is where to vote:  CLICK HERE

Now for the shuffle which is pretty mind-blowingly eclectic and includes some songs I probably heard for the first time today.  After the JUMP!

Amazingly all but one of the songs were available on the widget and the one that wasn’t was a cover and we got the original on there.

1.  Clap Your Hands by The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band from The Wages (2010).  (Rural Indiana Blues) I noticed that four Facebook friends Liked this band’s page including two friends from my hometown, a Carnie (of Black Jake and the Carnies) and a member of The Imperial Rooster.

2. Walk On by G. Love from The Hangout Music Fest 2012 Sampler – from G. Love’s 2011 album Fixin’ to Die (Hold the Special Sauce)

3. Virtue and Wine by Sondre Lerche from Faces Down (2002) (A Goodwill Store find and a damn good album)

4.  Saturday’s Child by Steve Almaas from Trailer Songs (2012) (Ex. Suicide Commando/Beat Rodeo: songs recorded in two airstream trailers in the Catskills – I’ve been a huge fan of Steve Almaas for years. This is a great record which we told you about right after it came out).
5.  She Floated Away by Husker Du (umlauts omitted ’cause I’m too lazy to add them) from Warehouse: Songs and Stories (1987) (The sixth and final album from the post-punk legends – completing a Minneapolis themed set of two songs – this is a Grant Hart penned song)

6.  Dinner by Blood Orange from the Dinner Btw Bad Girls single (2011) (Dev Hynes aka Lightspeed Champion aka Blood Orange – well crafted electronic based R&B music)

7.  Black Leaf by The Cave Singers from No Witch (2011) (Seattle based Indie music featuring former members of Pretty Girls Make Graves – this was one I downloaded and subsequently lost track of – I kind of dig this).

8.  Black Picket Fences by Walking for Pennies from Forget About Wonderland (2012) (awesome Mo-Grass music from one of the bands in our Band of the Year poll)
(Couldn’t find a video for Black Picket Fences so how about a Radiohead cover?)
9.  Wave Goodbye by Ty Segall Band from CMJ Mixtape – June 2012 – from Ty Segall Band’s Slaughterhouse (2012) (awesome garage punk music from San Francisco with rat-a-tat-tat drums and hard guitars – coolness)
10. Wake Up (Live in NYC 9/23/10) (Arcade Fire cover) by John Legend and the Roots from a download only release (2010) (Cool and funky cover of the Funeral single – The Roots are by far the best house band on television).

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Can See No Reason Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); <!– google_ad_client = "ca-pub-5465441380757075"; /* E2TG #2 */ google_ad_slot = "6306625404"; google_ad_width = 728; google_ad_height = 90; //

Before we get to the shuffle, I have to take a moment to send out lots of prayers, good thoughts and love to everyone affected by the tragedy in Connecticut on Friday.  And let’s face it, it affected most of us in some way.  Several bands we follow regularly here at Ear t the Ground live not too far from Newtown. The Velveteens who were featured artists a couple of months back had family members who attend the school. Thankfully, they were okay. For those of us with children, for those of us who have any compassion – this was an unspeakably devastating event.  But talk we must.  So, I sent out the prayers and good thoughts and love to those in Newtown and those in Connecticut and those in the United States of America and those in the world.  We are sick of violence, but we feel powerless in the face of it.  But, if there is power to break the cycles and change the old ways, it will… it must come from within us.  And it won’t all come in these fleeting moments of national and international grief and outrage.  The necessary changes have to come over time, even as the immediacy of the horror begins to fade and blend with all the previous horrors which were once in our immediate path.

Now, we are about seconds away from rolling out our 2nd Annual Band of the Year Readers Poll.  To get into the spirit, today’s shuffle comes from a playlist of the bands who will be in the year end poll.

What struck me, as I was listening to these songs today was how much great music we’ve heard this year, and also, how many great new friends we have made. In my estimation, this makes 2012 a great year for music.  What do you think?

And the Giraffe are a band that formed in Florida and currently is split between Florida and Nashville.  They have some new music which we hope to be bringing you soon. In the meantime, we have Magic 8 from their previous release called Something for Someone.  They tied for Band of the Month back in September.

MAKAR are a NYC band who captured our hearts and captured the crown to narrowly defeat The End Men in the epic January Band of the Month voting.  We have the title track from their album Funeral Genius up next in the shuffle.

Walking for Pennies write really great songs.  Their album Forget About Wonderland in one you should definitely check out.  They were one of the two Bands of the Month for November/December 2012.  Check out Nashville. Which I love and not just because it is about my city….

As previously mentioned, The End Men were narrowly defeated by MAKAR in the Band of the Month voting for January.  The End Men were not happy.  In the Band of the Year voting – expect them to try to avenge their loss.  By luck of the Shuffle, we had two great songs from The End Men in today’s shuffle.  First, the cautionary tale, They’re All Gonna Cost Ya and then the title track from the Build it Up EP.

Atlanta’s own Killing Kuddles was “this” close to being Band of the Month back in June. He made it into the Band of the Year poll and will employ a take no prisoners approach this time around.  Here’s Too Crazy off of Waking Up Older.

Another epic battle for Band of the Month was back in May.  When South of Ramona just edged out Sci-Fi Romance.  This is another rematch which be played out in the year end reader’s poll.  South of Ramona had two songs in today’s shuffle.  First Purple Sky from the Step Inside EP which came out this year, and then Westward Souls from the band’s Demo.

South of Ramona tends to release Cover videos rather than videos of their own songs.  Here are two great covers from South of Ramona.

We will close out the shuffle which has taken me all day to complete with a great song from our March 2012 Band of the Month.  The kids from Northbrook Garage have accomplished quite a bit in their short lives (winning a contest to record at Ardent Studios, playing with Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, and of course being named Band of the Month at Ear to the Ground).  Before they set their sights of the Band of the Year crown, check out their awesome single So What.

Here’s those Chicago kids covering Grace Potter and Nocturnals with a special guest!

The Final Band(s) of the Month for 2012

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); <!– google_ad_client = "ca-pub-5465441380757075"; /* E2TG #2 */ google_ad_slot = "6306625404"; google_ad_width = 728; google_ad_height = 90; //

I’ve been away longer than I intended, but as promised, voting a ended at 11:59:59 on November 30.  The E2TG election officials have been pouring over the votes, counting the provisional ballads, recounting, checking all the of dangling and hanging chads and generally having a good ole time.  And, if you remember, at the beginning of this poll, we said we would have two Bands of the Month since this poll covers two months.  The first Band of the Month for November/December receiving an overwhelming majority of the votes, is Walking for Pennies.

Here is their album Forget about Wonderland

Here’s Walking for Pennies doing Nashville
Our second Band of the Month and the final Band of the Month for 2012 is fast-rising Americana Singer/Songwriter Nena Anderson.

Here’s her album Beyond the Lights

Here is the official video for I Fall in Love Too Fast

So congrats to Walking for Pennies and Nena Anderson – thanks to all our great featured artists and now onward we go to the Band of the Year Poll!

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – I’m Smilin’ not Gloatin’ Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); <!– google_ad_client = "ca-pub-5465441380757075"; /* E2TG #2 */ google_ad_slot = "6306625404"; google_ad_width = 728; google_ad_height = 90; //

Good morning world from downtown Nashville!

I’ll save the rhetoric for now.  Call this shuffle, music for the morning after….

I can’t explain how much in love I am with Songs of Praise and Scorn by current Featured Artist, Christopher Paul Stelling. Up today is the lead-off track from that album which is called Mourning Train to Memphis. I’m a sucker for a train song, and I once lived in Memphis; so this song strikes a chord with me.

Jessica Pratt is a San Francisco based Folk singer (hum-dinger). She just recently released her self titled debut album (called Jessica Pratt interestingly enough).  The lead song from this record is the lovely Night Faces. Head over to Stereogum to get the MP3 of Night Faces.  Like what you’ve heard? Then go to the Birth Records site to get the album.

Shelly Colvin released her album Up the Hickory Down the Pine on October 30th.  The CD release party is this Thursday here in Nashville, and Ear2theGround will be there!  The album is chocked full of great music, and To the Bone is one of them.
Here’s Shelly with Red June doing Red Dirt Girl

We close out a delightfully consistent set of music with the title track from the album Forget About Wonderland by the band Walking for Pennies.  I’m really digging this record.

The Invention of 'Folk Music' and 'Art Music': Emerging Categories from Ossian to Wagner The Invention of ‘Folk Music’ and ‘Art Music’: Emerging Categories from Ossian to Wagner

We tend to take for granted the labels we put to different forms of music. This study considers the origins and implications of the way in which we categorize music. Whereas earlier ways of classifying music were based on its different functions, for the past two hundred years we have been obsessed with creativity and musical origins, and classify music along these lines. Matthew Gelbart argues that folk music and art music became meaningful concepts only in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, and only in relation to each other. He examines how cultural nationalism served as the earliest impetus in classifying music by origins, and how the notions of folk music and art music followed – in conjunction with changing conceptions of nature, and changing ideas about human creativity. Through tracing the history of these musical categories, the book confronts our assumptions about different kinds of music.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – This is a Mix Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); <!– google_ad_client = "ca-pub-5465441380757075"; /* E2TG #2 */ google_ad_slot = "6306625404"; google_ad_width = 728; google_ad_height = 90; //
We’ve arrived at  the mid-point of the week. Busy, busy…  Let’s get to the awesome shuffle we have for today:

First up, we have another song off the fantabulous newish album by our good friends, The Dead Exs who are back in New York after conquering the hell out of Texas.  The new album is called Relovolution and today’s song is the scorching Get Over.    By the way, David Patillo of the band has created an app for Spotify called h1tcher which is pretty cool.  If you Spotify, check it out.

Here’s another Relovolution song from the Texas tour

Chicago-based Joe Pug writes great songs.  His album, The Great Despiser came out in April on Lightning Rod Records, and today we have Hymn #76 from that record.

American Football was an Illinois-based band active in the late 1990s to 2000.  They are described as an emo band.  The song we have today is called Never Meant which was on their self-titled album but which we culled from a Polyvinyl Records compilation.  By the way, you know how Europeans and others get irritated when American’s call their football, soccer? Why don’t they turn around and call American Football soccer?  Just curious….

I’ve just recently been introduced to the New York duo Walking for Pennies.  They are self-described as folk americana/pop with bluegrass and motown influences. I have to say the whole bluegrass and motown thing grabbed my attention, and I’m glad it did.  Walking for Pennies has some really great music, and I am looking forward to hearing and sharing more of it in the weeks to come.  For now, we’ll start off with a song from their album Forget About Wonderland which just came out at the beginning of this month, and a song about my town – Nashville.
