“Three Questions” by A Color Engine

Another track from the prehistoric Don Ryan band that he formed with Eric Burchfield who later was in Elephant Goes West which was a featured artist or some such thing back in the prehistoric days of E2TG.  The A Color Engine album is called Voyage Underwater; 56 Knots.    For the video, I posted the video/song that began my long love affair with Don Ryan….’s music.

From the 2014 album of the same name by this Duluth, MN band…  Bob Dylan is from Duluth… in case you were wondering….

Another fine track from the Panamanian Times album… couldn’t find a video of this band so I posted a video featuring a bunch of people from the Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen collective and figured maybe someone from this band was in there somewhere… or not..  I love this band so check them out on Bandcamp etc.

“Everything I’m Not” by Beat Rodeo

From the 1986 album, Home in the Heart of the Beat on I.R.S. Records…  Beat Rodeo featured Steve Almaas who had previously been part of the legendary Minneapolis punk band Suicide Commandos.  Beat Rodeo played an innovative brand of  pop/country/rock.  This song was the single from the album which was produced by Scott Litt. Updated to remove… who co-wrote this song with Almaas (according to the Wikipedia)…

“Winter of My Discontent” by David Liebman

From Lieb Plays Wilder…  I got to see David Liebman backed by an all-star band of Nashville jazz players last month.

From their 2013 album, All the Times We Had… our second Ivan and Alyosha song in as many days. Their next album can be pre-ordered now and will be called, It’s All Just Pretend.

“Bye Bye Devil” by APE|MEN

By way of my inbox and from the self-titled debut, this band from the Southeastern fringe of the European Union offers up a tasty stew of indie/electronica/scuzz-noise/alternative postrock… it’s all good, and I dig it.

Off work today –  I thought I would semi-live blog today’s shuffle….

Numerologists will note that before today’s shuffle, my active playlist stands at six hundred sixty six.  Make of that what you will, but beside any other connotations, the playlist is a large as it has ever been, and I hope it generates an interesting mix of music.  I don’t know if it will, but I have high hopes because I know the songs that make up the playlist.  I just don’t yet know the order they will come out… so without further ado…  let’s get ready to shuffle…

Song # 2 – “Heartbeat” by Kopecky Family Band

Another Nashville band… this one is from Kids Raising Kids – 2012.  They are now known as just Kopecky if you are keeping score at home.  Groovy indie pop music…

Song # 3 – “Ain’t That Easy” by D’Angelo and the Vanguard

From Black Messiah – 2014 – Taking things down a soulful path… from one of the best records of the year (even if it was released at the tail end of last year… what’s a calendar anyway?

Song # 4 – “Johnny Commando” by The Satisfactors

From the self titled debut – 2015 of this New Jersey supergroup comes this tribute to Johnny Ramone.  A very fitting tribute…

Song # 5 – “Heroin Vietnam” by A Color Engine

Yesterday, we had some early music from an E2TG favorite in the form of Burning Bridges some early music by the enigmatic genius behind The Danbury Lie.  So, in that vein, we have some early music from another E2TG favorite and coincidentally? a friend of said enigmatic genius – Don Ryan.  The album is called Voyage Underwater; 56 Knots and it was made in 2007 or so.  You can read about the album and project here. This track is a mere 38 seconds, so I actually had to pause the shuffle to get this posted.  So let us continue…

Song # 6 – “Public Void” by Mothers

From Panamanian Times – 2014… some punky, jazzy vibes from this Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen band…  looking for new music from them soon…

Song # 7 – “No Need to Wave” by Artur U and the New City Limits

From Holiday From Eternity – 2015…  This alternative band is from Helsinki, Finland.  They just released their debut album.  Oddly enough, they already have a connection of sorts to Ear to the Ground – as their steel guitar player has played with Bill Laswell and James Chance both of whom are connected to my New York True Groove friends Marla Mase and Tomas Doncker.

Song #8 – “Blood” by Jeremy Gluck and Robert Coyne

Another great song from Memory Deluxe – I Knew Buffalo Bill 2 – 2014…

Song #9 – “Get Up, Get Up” by Tim Lee 3

After some global travels, the shuffle brings us back to Tennessee with my friends from Knoxville off their album  Live From Armory Sound: Boston – 2015.  The song was first released on Tim Lee’s solo album Concrete Dog – 2004.

Song #10 – “Driva Man” by Alabama Shakes

From the Soundtrack to the film 12 Years a Slave – 2013.  A cover of a Max Roach song.  Alabama Shakes follow up to their break through debut Boys and Girls is due out in April, and they recently delivered a highly praised performance on SNL.

More than likely, I’ll be back with a regular shuffle tomorrow, but I hope you enjoyed this “Live” blogging experiment as much as I did… although in retrospect it probably reads much like other shuffles.. oh well, I had fun…..

Warren Pash lives in East Nashville, he co-wrote the Hall and Oates song Private Eyes, and he makes some pretty cool music himself.  Tip o’ the hat to Too Much Country who contributed this song to this months Feel Bad for You mixtape.  Plastic Rulers was released in 2008.


“King of Kings” by Tomas Doncker from Power of the Trinity

Another great track off of the amazing Power of the Trinity album from New York City’s Tomas Doncker and his band.  As you may recall, we’ve been spinning this album as well as his latest Howlin’ Wolf project in heavy rotation.


“The Longest Bridge in the World” by Dean Wareham from Emancipated Hearts

Dean Wareham was in Galaxie 500.  This song came to me from my friend’s annual mix CDs.  Coincidentally, I drove over a bridge while listening to this song. Full disclosure, however, the Woodland Street Bridge is by no stretch of any imagination, the longest bridge in the world… it is a bridge though… so there’s that.  Cool song.


“No Questions Asked” by Mr. Kind from Wide Awake (Open Hands) single

Some brand new music from E2TG favorites and Creed aficionados, Mr. Kind featuring Brian Bergeron who was one of our earliest “Bands of the Week” – back when we had Bands of the Week.

“Awful Sound (On Eurydice)” by Arcade Fire from Reflektor

Some upstarts from Canada off their little heard 2013 album.  Another from my friend’s mix CDs.

“Shoot Out the Lights” by Richard Thompson from Acoustic Classics

Ah yes!  The original version recorded by Thompson and his then wife Linda is one of my favorite songs off of one of my favorite albums.  RT just released a new album featuring acoustic versions of many of his classic songs.   This was the first release – issued a free download a week or so ago.

“The Murder Industry” by Don Ryan from Live in Studio

Kopecky Family Band are really a family band and they have been Nashville favorites for several years.  Kids Raising Kids was first released back in 2012, but was released by ATO Records in April and helped to introduce the band to the rest of the world. I keep finding Kopecky Family Band EPs at Goodwill – so thanks to the person with poor musical taste and/or questionable judgment.
 
We couldn’t let 2013 get away without posting one more Don Ryan song. We have yet another song queued up for 2014.
 
Christopher Paul Stelling released his awesome album False Cities and toured the world in 2013. My regret is that I missed seeing him when he came through Nashville and played a sold out show at the world famous Bluebird Café (as seen on the ABC series, Nashville)*
 
*if ABC or the producers of Nashville  want to pay me for the plug, they can just shoot me an e-mail and I will happily provide banking information….
 
Amanda Shires released the stunning Down Fell the Doves in 2013, and we offer up four songs from that album even though she doesn’t need our help.  She’s amazing. I saw her at Americana in 2012 and then again at an all too brief mini-set at Grimey’s for Americanarama.
 
As I was listening and writing all of these year-end posts, I kept coming up with superlatives, but I never got around to codifying them. So, suffice it to say, The Big Fame – the highly anticipated album by Connecticut’s The Grimm Generation would have been the Most… something.  I couldn’t let this year end countdown slip by without a little Grimm music, so I decided to listen to the whole damn album.  The band is one of my all-time favorites and they keep making new music and doing new things, so I fully expect to post much more of their music in 2014.
 
Todd Farrell, Jr. and the Dirty Birds are from right here in Nashville, but it took CXCW and Popa Tunes (again) to turn me on to their music.  This is flat out great music that I want to hear much more of in 2014.
 
Well, I burned through my playlist and still had a few minutes to get to my office this morning.  I could think of no better way to close out this whole she-bang than by listening to the first three songs from Valued Customer’s mind-expanding Kalpa album.  There is so much demented genius going on here, that it can be hard for a simple-minded music blogger to keep up. I really just want everyone to experience this album.  Do it!

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Band of the Year and More Mix

You have before you, the FINAL Ear to the Ground of 2013, so let’s blow this thing out!

First order of business:  As promised, it is time to unveil our 2013 Band of the Year. As announced, for the first time in E2TG history, the Band of the Year will be selected by me, myself, and I.  Back in 2011, I came up with the idea of a Band of the Year, and frankly, I didn’t want the pressure/guilt in picking one band over others. So, I created a Readers’ Poll, and with a massive last minute push, UK band The Mobbs stormed to a narrow victory over underdogs Ubiquity Machine.

Following the success of that initial poll, I began running Band of the Month polls beginning with December 2011, although initially successful, the concept of pitting bands against each other began to stale.  We carried on, and at the end of last year, we had another successfully Band of the Year Readers’ Poll wherein Skeletons in the Piano were selected by popular election.

Since that time, I decided to focus on featuring as much new music as I could, and I dropped the Band of the Month and related features. Although I briefly considered another year-end poll, I came to the conclusion that I wasn’t willing to give that power away this time…. oh yeah, and the thing about bands working together for their common good….

So…. after all that background and unsolicited explanation, I am very excited to announce the 2013 Ear to the Ground Band of the Year.

The 2013 Band of the Year were selected for the following reasons:

1. They are among the coolest, most bad ass people I’ve had the good fortune to get to know as the result of writing this blog.

2. They are extremely generous and supportive of other bands and artists.

3. They released on of the best albums of 2013.

4. I got to meet them and see them blaze through an all too brief set back in early Spring.

5. They had a successful tour in the US and in Europe.

6. The followed up their amazing 2013 album with a brand new single which was accompanied by an incredible video that visually depicted their total bad-assery.

7.  Because I said so……

The 2013 E2TG Band of the Year is…..  THE END MEN from Brooklyn, New York!!!!!!

 






Congrats kids!  Here’s to an even better 2014!

Americana told Sturgill Simpson he was too Country for Americana.  His reply, I made a country album.

Peck is Chris Peck who we first met as part of the Brooklyn-based The Disappointment. He is releasing his new album one song at a time, at we have two of those songs in today’s shuffle.

Confession: I didn’t think I liked Dr. Dog. I lumped them in with a bunch of “Jam” bands that just weren’t my cup of tea (actually tea isn’t my cup of tea either, but that is another story). Anyway, so I got the chance to actually listen to some of Dr. Dog’s new music this year, and believe it or not, I dug it.  Go figure.

Penicillin Baby are part of the growing and impressive Jeffery Drag Records family and like the other Jeffery Drag artists they offer a nice counter argument to any one who says all Nashville indie bands sound alike. 

I don’t know if The Civil Wars are finished. I hope they aren’t, but if their 2013 self-titled album is the swan song, it’s a hell of a swan song.

In addition to their new EP, Mr. Kind released a series of cover songs wherein they teamed up with other indie artists to cover indie rock classics.  Here they team up with fellow California band holychild to cover The Postal Service classic.

Dog Without Warning were one of my big take-aways from CXCW this year. I began featuring their Go Girl album.  When the band contacted me to give their new EP a listen, I was blown away.  Not only was this a huge change of direction, it was also an excellent record with some memorable songs.

This is my very first post, and I don’t know exactly how this is going to work.  A more informative post will follow, but I want to see how this works.

Somehow, I missed that this past Wednesday marked the two year anniversary of Ear to the Ground.

I just want to give a huge shout out and thanks to ALL the awesome people I’ve met as a result of writing this. Blogging can at times feel like shouting into a void, but what has kept me going besides all of the great music I’ve “discovered and uncovered” are the new friends I’ve met along the way.  

As I’ve often said, I’m all about looking ahead while carrying forward the legacy of the past. Okay, I don’t know that I’ve ever said that, but I’m saying it now.

So… no big to-do.  How about some music…

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Radio On Mix

Happy Monday!  Man, it feels like forever since I’ve done a Morning Shuffle.  Still trying to figure out how to do this on my new phone… 

Anyway, it’s a beautiful day in Nashville and very warm for early December.  

Our good friend, Don Ryan just released a new song called Vultures.  We told you about it – did you see it.  Well, here’s where to find it — HERE

Don finished 3rd in our First Annual Band of the Year voting.  We start off a Monday Shuffle with the song Midtown Waiting from his first album Tangle Town.  


 
The second best thing to come out of Idaho (I love me some taters) is Built to Spill. The band has been releasing albums for close to twenty years.  Our song today, Aisle 13 comes from the band’s most recent album, 2009 There is No Enemy.

 
The Godfather of Alternative Music – Lou Reed has released about twenty solo records – which does not count his collaborations or his work with The Velvet Underground.  An impressive career.  Here is his take on 80s style hip-hop with his song, The Original Wrapper from his 14th solo album Mistrial.

 
More Meat Puppets is a good thing.  Here is the instrumental Six Gallon Pie from their 1991 album Forbidden Places.  The album is currently out of print.  Here’s a link to Amazon to buy a physical copy of the song.

The Modern Lovers first album (self-titled) was recorded in 1971 and 1972, but was not released in 1976.  Nevertheless, it stands as one of the greatest Rock records of all time.  This original incarnation of  the band which featured Jonathan Richman, Jerry Harrison (Talking Heads), David Robinson (The Cars), Ernie Robinson and John Felice (The Real Kids), only made one album but recorded some the most important songs of the Rock era – Pablo Picasso, Modern World, Girlfriend, Hospital and perhaps most famously – Roadrunner which is the next song in our shuffle.


 

And we close out today’s shuffle with a song from an underappreciated 80s artist, The Call.  Almost everyone knows their song The Walls Came Down.  Today though we have another track from the band’s third album Scene Beyond Dreams which we got from their 1991 compilation, The Best of the Mercury Years.
