Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Never Enough Mix

On a Monday which began with a spilled cup of coffee… (and did I mention it was Monday?) the shuffle comes up with a fine collection of music.  No oddball pop gems, none of the usual suspects, just a nice collection of cool music from around the country…

Oh – I recorded a new bit of short fiction to my Soundcloud account.  Check it if you want…

“Lovely” by Solardrive from Solardrive

Our penultimate track from the self-titled Solardrive album which we have been playing for several months.  A cool video accompanies co-directed by Solardrive front man Balthazar Getty.  Solardrive are based in L.A.

“Photographs and Fables”  by Mission South from Migration Vol. 2

Mission South were from D.C. I became a fan after seeing their exuberant performance at The Basement last fall.  Sadly, they broke up just a few months after that, but they left behind some nifty songs.

“Desert Ground” by The Western Den from The Battle Hymn EP

The Western Den are from Boston.  Just a little ambient folk for the shuffle.

“Happy Man” by Sparklehorse from Distorted Ghost EP

The late great Mark Linkous was from North Carolina. This is a sweet song made sadder by time and circumstances…

“Burning Jacob’s Ladder” by Mark Lanegan from Mark Lanegan

A survivor of the Seattle grunge scene.  This is just a purely great song.

“Hide Away Folk Family” by They Might Be Giants from First Album Live

Again, I am reminded of the awesomeness of the first TMBG album.  They Might be from Brooklyn… There May Be Giants.

“Willy’s Song” by Rayland Baxter from Feathers and Fishhooks

Nashville represents….  Man I love this song. Don’t fly away…

“Never Enough” by Trixie Whitley from Fourth Corner

Trixie Whitley is the daughter of Chris Whitley and she is part of Black Dub with super producer Daniel Lanois.  This is good information to have, but it is secondary to the amazing talent and ability evident in this track from her debut full-length solo album.  She is from New York and Ghent.

“SheshBesh” by The Plum Magnetic from Terra Animata!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);

We finish things up with some amazing fusion/world music from New Orleans.

Continuing a tradition that dates back to January 14, 1993…

We have a great shuffle to help me celebrate… 😉

“The Score” by Stoney

“Boogie” by The Delta Saints

“Velvet Goldmine” by David Bowie

“Down in Blue” by Marla Mase

“Jesus Christ is Just Rock and Roll” by The Harmonica Lewinskies

“This Must Be the Place (Naïve Melody)” (Talking Heads Cover) by Bhi Bhiman

“Airstream Girl” by Susan James

“Free” by Mission South

“Move Back” by Sam Davison

“Bosnian Waffle” by The Walking Who

“Sweets to the Sweet” by Tom Tom Club

Notes:

I was introduced to the music of Stoney by James Moore of Independent Music Promotions. As with most of the music he submits, this was an excellent discovery.

I’ve been hearing a lot about Nashville’s The Delta Saints recently. There music is a dark, spicy, soupy gumbo of swamp blues inspired rock and roll.  If you haven’t done so already, check them out as soon as possible.

It’s my birthday and I’ll play Bowie if I want to…

New music from Marla Mase? New music from Marla Mase!  One of my favorite new discoveries of 2013 (again thanks to James Moore of IMP).  Mase has a new EP due out at the end of next month.  I got a sneak peak, and so far, I am digging what I’m hearing.  The EP is called Half-Life.

How about some fairly new music from the Harmonica Lewinskies?  Don’t mind if I do.  Dig this song. Yep, it’s another #MCFK connection.

This is my last post from Bhi Bhiman’s awesome cover album Substitute Preacher. The Talking Heads’ classic gets the Bhiman treatment.  You can compare this to the recent Lumineers’ cover or to the original. Either way, it is a unique take on a great song.

Susan James  was another “discovery”. Susan is an amazing California Folk/Americana/Singer-Songwriter.  We go back to her 2011 album Highways, Ghosts, Hearts and Home for this incredible track.

We caught Mission South  at one of Grimey’s New Faces Nights at the Basement this past fall, and we captivated by their youthful energy and infectious grooviness.

How about another from the talented Mr. Sam Davison. More #MCFK goodness.  I earned my Generation X creds when moved back home in 1990.

If you have to have the flu – how about Candy Flu? Which is the name of the release from Psychedelic Rockers The Walking Who from Sydney. We got up with them on the Brite Revolution site.

The Shuffle closes in groovy, funky  style with some fine confections from the legendary Tom Tom Club.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – A Few of My Favorite Things 2013 Mix – Part Five

Stupid winter bugs…. well, I was out sick Friday – so no shuffle.  But, today’s shuffle includes music I would have featured on that day – plus a few more.   I’m actually going to be away for the rest of the week.  Ear to the Ground will return Monday December 30 to present the 3rd Annual Band of the Year award (for the first time not based upon a poll).

Let’s get to the music…

“I Guess That’s True” by Calicocat
“Lincoln” by EdTang
“Hey Grace, Hey Tony” by Grace and Tony
“May the Road Rise to Meet Your Face” by James Crawford
“Afraid to Die” by Monks of Mellonwah
“Screwdriver” by Prince
“Arrival in a Distant Land” by The Gabriel Construct
“Patience” by Mr. Kind
“Halo Day (4 ‘Drew)” by Tim Lee 3
“Bill, I Believe This is Killing Me” by EdTang
“Davey Jones” by The Blind Owl Band
“I’d Rather be High” by David Bowie
“Lonesome Street” by The Blind Owl Band
“Knocking on Heavens Door” by You and Me
“Divine Restlessness” by Marla Mase
“On the Watch (Parts V- XII)” by The Gypsy West
“Tennessee” by The Coal Men
“New Jerusalem” by Valued Customer
“Saint” by Mission South

NOTES:

Sadly, Nashville’s Calicocat called it quits this year, but first, they dropped their brilliant Mighty Superfluous.

Look for Grace and Tony to continue to light things up in 2014. Their debut album November dropped in… well November.

Reuniting with old classmates on social media can be a hit or miss endeavor. From acrimonious political rankling to endless game requests, there can definitely be a downside.  On the other hand, there are people I didn’t know too well in school who I’ve gotten to know and like through the web.  And then there is James Crawford who just happened to make one of my favorite albums of the year.

Prince and David Bowie released excellent new music in 2013. Go figure.

The Gypsy West kicked off 2013 with the release of the final part of their Accomplices trilogy. We loved it.

Valued Customer.

I saw Mission South at the Basement when I went out to see my friends Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray. They are from D.C. and pretty freakin’ awesome.

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – In the Basement Mix

“Sometimes words have two meanings….”

Ah hell – we have a jam packed Mix of music so let’s get down to it….

After the jump….

“Animal Tracks” Mountain Man (from Made the Harbor  – sweet sounding trio who met at Bennington College in Vermont)

“Setting Sun” by Elephant Stone (from Elephant Stone – groovy psychedelic rockers from Montreal who came to our attention recently)

“Saint” by Mission South (from Migration Vol. 2 – Three kids from DC – Saw them this week at The Basement under Grimey’s. Such a FUN set. Great sound, great energy. A true highlight on a night of highlights.)

“Bloodstream” by Firehorse (from Pills From Strangers. Not fIREHOSE nor Firehouse (thank God), but a nifty indie band from Brooklyn – think the airy, groovy side of Indie music)

“A Silent Moment” by Elephant Stone (from Elephant Stone – another mind melter)

“Torn Maps” by Bosnian Rainbows (a relatively new project of Omar Rodriguez Lopez of The Mars Volta. Electronic, heavy, and pretty darn cool)

“Baby’s Gone to Memphis” by Mark Robinson (from Have Axe – Will Groove. Let’s all go to Memphis… or at least play the Blues…)

“Two Beads at the End” by the Minutemen (from Double Nickels on the Dime.  Sometimes it’s good to go back and listen to some of the music that first really moved you… oh, D.!)

“Love is a Rose” by Linda Ronstadt (Linda sings Neil… does it get any better?)

“Chili” by Dog Without Warning (from Bark.  One of my favorites on the Bark EP. A cautionary tale of sorts)

“Full Five Paces” by The Autumn Defense (From their debut The Green Hour. Man ‘o man I dig the gorgeous 60s sound of this band – saw them back in September at Grimey’s Americanarama show)

“Time to Go” by Moovalya (from Moovalya. Some nice hard rock from Phoenix)

“Hymn 101” by Joe Pug (from his debut EP Nation of Heat. I love Joe Pug’s music so much.)

“Raise the Sun” by Anciients (from Heart of Oak. Just some jaw-dropping Progressive Metal from Vancouver)

“Tombstone Blues” by Richie Havens (a Dylan cover from the I’m Not There Soundtrack by the late great New York area singer-songwrite and Woodstock alum)
