Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Unfinished Business 2013 Mix

Well, it’s a brand new year, and I already have some great stuff queued up to get 2014 off to a good beginning.  But, before we dive headlong into the new, there is some unfinished business – namely more 2013 favorites I wanted to offer up.  So today and tomorrow, I will wrap up the end of 2013 Mix and then Monday January 6 –  E2TG will kick off 2014 with a rousing start.

I’ve decided that the subtitle of this end of the year wrap-up should be: “If you think music sucked in 2013, then you were listening to the wrong music.”

I humbly offer #E2TG has your antidote to the bad music blues….

Here’s today’s shuffle:

“An End to a Means” and “A Path of Footprints Forged in the Midnight Sun” by Liquid Casing

“Headed for the Promised Land” by James Crawford

“Suit and Tie” by Justin Timberlake feat. Jay Z

“Long Days of Longing” by James the Giant

“Requiem for the Disconsolate” by James Crawford

“Still” by Daughter

“Swept Under the Rug” by Francie Moon

“Checkpoints and Borders” by Liquid Casing

“Leave it Buried” by James the Giant

“Too Scared to Run Away” by James Crawford

“Work” by The End Men

“Thin Edge of a Knife” and “My Guitar” and “All the While” by James Crawford

“Get Lucky” by Daft Punk feat. Pharrell Williams

“Riot Path” by Liquid Casing

“Oh God” by Those Darlins

“Tremble Town” and “Go Home Daddy (You’re Drunk)” by James Crawford

NOTES

Progressive Alternative Rock band Liquid Casing from Texas have been around for several years with several line-up changes.  We caught up with them in 2013 with their release A Separate/Divide – a concept album covering the topic of immigration.  Musically, the album covers a wide path of avant-garde jazz, post-punk, alt-rock and uses emotionally evocative vocals and lyrics to draw the listener into the experiences of people making difficult decisions and facing unimaginable hurdles.

I am very happy to feature 8 count ’em, Eight song from James Crawford’s stunning self-titled album.  He is promising more new music in 2014 plus some long anticipated live dates.  Stay tuned.

Here at Ear to the Ground, we aren’t above featuring some big hit songs when we feel like it.  Thus today’s mix features 2013 music from Justin Timberlake and Daft Punk.

I’ve seen the UK band Daughter on several Year End lists on those Brand X music blogs, and to be honest, they probably wouldn’t be here except for a cool happening back in September.    The band was added to the impressive Americanarama line up at Grimey’s here in Nashville, however, their instruments were locked away at the Exit/In where they were scheduled to play that night.  So, the band borrowed some instruments and delivered an impressive set of music that won over this music blogger.  Check them out if you haven’t yet.

Papa Tune’s kept mentioning Francie Moon. Guess what, he was right as usual. I’m not even sure if I had the chance to feature this during 2013, but nonetheless, she deserves to be in this mix.

We had to include another song by our 2013 Band of the Year – The End Men.  Work is their single released in the later part of the year.

In 2013, a… um.. revealing poster appeared on the side of Grimey’s and other record stores across the country.  The purpose was to announce the forthcoming new album by Those Darlins. With Blur the Lines, the band sealed the deal as one of the best Nashville bands around.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – A Few of Favorite Things 2013 Mix – Part Two

First of all… Tuesday? Really? Just Tuesday?

Second… how about a couple of my favorite Christmas songs…

Third… Rest in Peace to Mr. Ray Price. In seeing some of the news reports, I was most struck at how his voice held up into his late 70s/early 80s. So smooth…  Thanks for the music.

Now… to today’s music…

Our journey back through some favorites from the year that will soon enough be ending…  Shuffle style…

“It’s All Wrong” by The End Men

“I Should Have Listened” and “Today is Gonna Be a Better Day” by You and Me

“Stuck” by The Coal Men

“Double Brahma” by Valued Customer

“The Flame” by prattle on, rick

“Bloodhound” by Jeanette Lynne

“Muskegon Harbor” by Taco Land

“Sailing Stones” by Monks of Mellonwah

“Daddy Fool (Svelt Mix)” by Tipi Valley (from Rock ‘n Roll Lives On)

“Love Doesn’t Mind” by Taco Land (from Pancakes and Pizza)

“Two Weeks on the Ocean” by James the Giant (from James the Giant)

“Broken Heartland” by The Coal Men (from Escalator)

“Onward” by The Danbury Lie (from ?)

“Modern Lives” by Taco Land (from Pancakes and Pizza)

“The Hoover Farm Exorcism” by The Imperial Rooster (from Cluckaphony)

Highlights:

The End Men – of course.

You and Me (glad to receive some music this year from one of the bands we’ve been following for a long time.  Also glad to have two songs in a row from that album in today’s shuffle)

I feel like I was late to the party with The Coal Men. If, like me, you are just now discovering this great Nashville band, Escalator is a great place to start.

Before 2013, I knew I liked Valued Customer, but I wasn’t completely sure why.  This year with the release of their truly mind-blowing/expanding Kalpa, I have become convinced that this wacky kids from Toronto are nothing short of musical geniuses…maybe just geniuses.

prattle on, rick is another Nashville-based “discovery” from 2013. Looks like I caught on just in-time for his fan-only release A Decade Begins and the album from which this track is taken, his extraordinary Some Quiet Majesty.

Likely, Taco Land and Tipi Valley have very little in common.  One is from south Texas and the other from coastal Wales. They have both been featured prominently on this blog for some time. And they both had impressive releases in 2013. In listening today, I heard something (subtle) to connect these two great artists/bands.  Always good to have long time blog friends/supporters in the shuffle.

Monks of Mellonwah are releasing their debut album as a series of EPs.  The first two parts – Ghost Stories and Afraid to Die were released in 2013.  The final part will be released in 2014.  Some awesome hard rock from down under.

James the Giant released one of the most beautiful/painfully touching records of the year.  The song featured today is dedicated to his brother who was killed in Afghanistan.

The Danbury Lie and The Imperial Rooster have just about nothing in common except that they both released incredible music in 2013 that I have thoroughly enjoyed hearing and sharing.  There will be much more on both of these bands forthcoming.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Your Own Chosen Speed Mix

Well we have a lot of ground to cover today, so let’s not tarry.. or whatever…
Music begins after the JUMP

Pre-Shuffle
1. We begin with one of the best examples of pure British Pop (with a capital ‘P’) that I’ve heard in a long time.  We’ve featured the band Human Face – who came to our attention via a Twitter Followseveral times, but it’s been a little while.  “After Lunch” is just a flat out great song. As I mentioned before, I really do put this band in the long line of great British Pop bands that includes Squeeze among others.  Check out the video (in the playlist)
2. As a poor lowly music blogger, I spend a lot of time trolling the internet for legal free music to present to you.  Noisetrade has become a favorite site of mine.  They recently teamed up with the folks at Paste to offer up a Radiohead show from June 1995.  We’ve been periodically featuring tracks from that album. Today, we have “Anyone Can Play Guitar” which was released as a single just before the release of the album Pablo Honey which includes the song.
3. The Great Mistake are Buffalo New York band that we’ve featured a couple of times. They are just in the process of releasing some new music which sounds great.  “Haphazard” goes back to their 2010 album, Wave to the Astronaut.  Below is a widget with a newer song called Your Philosophy which may be on their next album.
4. I have this strange obsession with cover songs.  I mean, yeah there are the occasional tragic mistakes, but for the most part, I think, cover songs are pretty interesting.  They can be defining like Hendrix’s version of “All Along the Watch Tower”, redeeming like Aztec Camera’s deconstruction of Van Halen’s “Jump”, or they can just be spot on but still cool versions like today’s first cover – Matthew Sweet doing a cover of the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers classic, “American Girl”. This comes from a cover album featuring covers of songs from the 80s which were featured in iconic films of that era.  The album is a few years old, but it just came into my consciousness and there are some interesting songs on here.

5. We’ve been hyping  Kalpa, the new album from Toronto-based lovable misfits, Valued Customer.  We got our first taste a couple of weeks ago with the song “Second Moon”. Now, we go deeper with the longest track on the album.  “New Jerusalem” clocks in at 14 minutes and has several movements running through it. Historically, I’m not a big fan over long songs.  “Sister Ray” and “Telegraph Road” are two notable exceptions. And, I have to add “New Jerusalem” to that list.  In some ways, this surprisingly reminds me of the The Gabriel Construct album I’ve been featuring of late.  Like that work, this is experimental, challenging, complex, and extremely, extremely good.  Patrick and Ugggy of Valued Customer are hilarious to follow on the Twitter and the Facebook. They are sometimes silly, obscure, and irreverent.  This album is revelatory. They obviously put tons of work into this album, and it has paid off.

Some lyrics from “New Jerusalem”

civilizations like chocolate donuts
if one isn’t good enough a hundred won’t be good enough”

running to new jerusalem
the towers are in the exosphere
goodbye you whores of babylon
trumpets are playing burning spear”

“(hide your daughter hide your wife
lock up all your beets and chives
they’ll kill you for your salt and spice
the end of twitter and being nice)”

http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/album=50545387/size=medium/bgcol=ffffff/linkcol=0687f5/transparent=true/

6.  In the weeks since we first introduced you to James the Giant, he has gone on to have his first single introduced by USA Today and the video for that song featured on Huffington Post.   As much as I want to say that being featured on Ear to the Ground lead to these impressive credentials, the fact is this accolades are well-deserved.  The single “Two Weeks on the Ocean” is one of the emotionally powerful songs I’ve heard in a while. Today, we feature “Leave it Buried”.  The eponymously titled EP had it’s official released yesterday.

Shuffle

1. Night, which is the newish album from Beijing (the band not the city). The band comes from Connecticut.  Today’s track is “Into the Rain”. The album is a great achievement. On it, the band walks a precarious balance which could have easily sent them plummeting into one of several miasmas. The band and this album successfully navigates these treacherous paths.

2.  In 1986, I started hearing this awesome song on the college radio station. It was rollicking and dark and hinted at something just outside of my vision. I eventually bought the album which quickly came and has remained a favorite of mine.  The artist and album are called Peter Case. The song is “Walk in the Woods“.

3.  Another cover.  A year after Bob Dylan released his fourth album (1964). Johnny Cash (who admired and was admired by Dylan) recorded a cover version of “It Ain’t Me Babe” with June Carter for his 1965 album Orange Blossom Special which was Cash’s 21st album.

Music City Railing by JWM (June 2013)
Ok.  We’ve whipped up a rich and hearty stew of good music – as usual crossing genres, styles, and decades with the greatest of ease.
The mix begins next…
JUMP

PRE-SHUFFLE

“What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye (Sister, Sister…)
“Needles and Pins” by the Ramones (song written by Jack Nitzsche and Sonny Bono)
“Mississippi” by David Nail (a flat out great song)
“Peggy’s Tavern” by The Payroll Union (Americana from the mother country – Sheffield to be exact – h/t to PopaTunes)
“Wart Hog” by the Ramones (from Too Tough to Die. Dee Dee sings! Punk Rock!)
“It Belongs to You” by James the Giant (another excellent song from his stunning and powerful debut)
“Riot Path” by  Liquid Casing (A propulsive jam from A Separate Divide)
“Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment” by the Ramones (Third Ramones song of the mix – yay!)
“Magdalene”  by Guy Clark (Nashville via Texas songwriter extraordinaire)
SHUFFLE

“Defective Mind” by The Black Clouds from Better Days (2013)

A New Jersey band that makes some of the best grungy punk music I’ve heard in a while. High energy, melodious and fun.

“Ohio” by Devo from When Pigs Fly: Songs You Never Thought You’d Hear – compilation (2002)

A pretty cool cover of the Neil Young penned Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young song.  Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh were students at Kent State at the time of the killings and Casale witnessed the shooting and knew two of the victims.  This is the second cover of this song we’ve had in one of our mixes. We previously featured a version by Mike Mills of R.E.M. with New Orleans Trombone ensemble Bonerama from a Hurricane Relief CD)

“Deep Thoughts by Jack Handy (sic)” by Heath McNease from Thrift Store Jesus (2012)

We jump over to another release by Heath McNease. This track references a popular segment from the 90s on SNL.  Jack Handey is the correct spelling. I’m not sure if the misspelling is intentional or not.

“Ramblin On My Mind” by Left Lane Cruisers and James Leg from Painkillers (2012)

Some more deep, deep blues from the Indiana based Left Lane Cruiser joined here by James Wesley Myers aka Reverend James Leg of Black Diamond Heavies… Oh yeah, it’s a Robert Johnson song.

Greetings.  After an extended Holiday weekend, Ear to the Ground is back with another slam, bang mix of music. During the recess, I’ve been busy adding songs to our rotating playlist from which the Morning Pre-Shuffle and Shuffle are drawn.
Today, we have a pretty decent mixture of old and new music which covers a variety of musical styles and genres.  Hope you enjoy it.  The Pre-shuffle kicks off right after the JUMP

Pre-Shuffle

“I’m Wide Awake” by Jeffrey James (Nashville based soulful singer – was on Season 3 of The Voice)

“Vulture in My Sky” by The Jake Levinson Band (from Austin – music video directed by our good friend Raindogg!)

“Lonesome Street” by The Blind Owl Band (Our second peak into the forthcoming album from this awesome New York band. The Train I Ride is Made of Wood and Steel is due out in two days. If you live anywhere in NY and NJ, be sure to catch The Blind Owl Band on their album release tour.  Saturday’s show in Saratoga Springs features our friends The Lucky Jukebox Brigade!)

“Raymond Carver” by The Great American Novel (We continue to mentally prepare ourselves for the highly anticipated new album by this New York band)

“My Iron Lung” (live) by Radiohead (more 1995 goodness via Paste Magazine and Noisetrade)

“Turn Me On Dead Man” by Bill Lloyd (Lloyd has been a fixture on the Nashville music scene for a long, long time.  I first became familiar with him when he was rocking out with his band The December Boys.  Since then, he has released a string of albums which are as close to pure pop heaven and one can hope to reach, he was 1/2 of the Country music duo Foster and Lloyd, and more recently he curates a rotating band called The Long Players who recreate classic albums.  His Facebook posts provide an excellent history of great music. This song is from his 1999 album Standing on the Shoulders of Giants.  His latest album is Boy King of Tokyo)

Shuffle

“Silence” by Beijing from Night (2013)

Our new friend’s from Connecticut Beijing jump back into the Shuffle with another track from their rocking new album Night.

“American Music” by Violent Femmes from Why Do Birds Sing? (1991)

From the Fifth Studio album. American Music may be the band’s second best known song.  Violent Femmes have reunited in 2013 and played Coachella and Milwaukee’s Summerfest.

“Long Days of Longing” by James the Giant from James the Giant (2013)

This powerful debut by the San Francisco singer/songwriter who goes by the moniker James the Giant is still about two weeks from its official release.  The first single, Two Weeks on the Ocean (which we featured within the last week or so) is out and had a premier at USA Today!

“Creep” (live) by Radiohead from PASTE.COM Presents: Radiohead Live at Tramps June 1, 1995 (2013)

“Whatever makes you happy
Whatever you want
You’re so fucking special
I wish I was special”

Set list from Royal Court of China Reunion Show 6/21/2013
So a longer than usual morning commute in three parts instead of the usual two, and tons of great music.  As usual, the Video Playlist at the end attempts to represent the songs in the mix – actual song when possible, alternate song or video if not possible.  Only one artist/song is not in the Playlist but more on that later.

Pre-Pre-Shuffle:

“The Turning Quiet” by Joshua Worden (Soulful Pop)

“Two Weeks on the Ocean” by James the Giant  (not represented on playlist ’cause I couldn’t find any videos – debut self-titled EP and this song is the first “single” – Album due out next month – a song about his brother who was killed in Afghanistan. This one gave me goosebumps)

“Get Lucky” by Daft Punk feat. Pharell (Yeah!)

“Justice’nt Right” by Wheelchair Sports Camp (Yes! Very yes!)

“Stuck” by Canopy Climbers (from their latest –  Miles)

“Forget It” by Royal Court of China (they did this one in the show Saturday night. A favorite from the self-titled record)

“The Ballad of Billy Polk” by The End Men (Hell yeah – The End Men back in the shuffle with a favorite from their latest, Play With Your Toys (ah who am I kidding their all favorites)

“Alex Chilton” by The Replacements (if this was all The Replacements had done, it would be enough to immortalize them… “I never go far, without a little Big Star”)

“The Walking Dead” by Bella’s Bartok (Um… Oh, yeah!)

End of Pre-Pre-Shuffle

Pre-Shuffle

“Coming On a Black Day” by Stomacher (One of our favorites from the early days of this blog.  This song – hell this whole album and their subsequent release are brilliant.  This may still be my favorite Stomacher song)

“You’ve Got Yr. Cherry BombMr. Kind and Picture Atlantic (collab. featuring our friend Brian Bergeron’s band Mr. Kind joining forces with San Jose band Picture Atlantic, to take on a Spoon song)

“Psycho Therapy” by Ramones (First you try Psycho Therapy – from 1983s Subterranean Jungle)

 End of Pre-Shuffle

SHUFFLE NEXT

“On My Way” by Ivan and Alyosha from All the Times We Had (2013)

They are from Seatlle, their name comes from characters from The Brothers Karanazov. Great songs.

“Lost Connection” by Colt Cleveland from Colt Cleveland EP (2013)

Some awesome new Pop. My friend Hayden Coleman does some beats on Colt Cleveland’s new songs – maybe this one???

“Teenage Lobotomy” and “Rockaway Beach” by the Ramones from Rocket to Russia (1977)

If Psycho Therapy doesn’t work… ah let’s just hitch a ride to Rockaway Beach….

“Here Comes a Regular” by The Replacements from Tim (1985)

“First the lights, and the collar goes up,and the wind begins to blow
You turn our back on a pay-you-back last call
First the plants, the leaves, the grass and here comes the snow
There ain’t much to rake here anyway in the fall”

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Power of Equality Mix

=

Time is short, and we have some nifty tunes to bring you…

Pre-Shuffle:

We started with an early morning wake up call from our new friend The Gabriel Construct. Yesterday, we featured the first track on his brand new Interior City album.  Today, we heard “Curing Somatization” the last track on the album.  A blistering, challenging 10 plus minute powerhouse filled with some glorious and amazing noise.

Next, “I Wanna Live” by the Ramones

“Leave it All Behind” by Nikki Sue and the Bad News

“Don’t Wanna Die Anymore” by Ivan and Alyosha

“Are You Hung Up?” by Wheelchair Sports Camp

and “Little Mascara” by The Replacements

SHUFFLE NEXT:

“Bless You (For the Good That’s In You) by Delta Rae from Gangster Squad: Music From And Inspired By The Motion Picture (2013)

The Peggy Lee original is also on this soundtrack.

“Travelin’ Light” by Peter Case from The Man with the Blue Post-Modern Fragmented Neo-Traditionalist Guitar (1989)

Just one of my all-time favorite songs, and a huge influence on my great unpublished American Novel, The Drift.  Puts a gleeful bounce in my step every time!

“Do You Feel the Same” by Royal Court of China from Royal Court of China (1987)

(Top) Royal Court of China Album Cover
(Bottom) Cover model Yumi with Joe Blanton in 2013

Ears are still ringing from Royal Court of China’s Saturday night set at Foobar. Nashville.  Another track from the self-titled album.

“Tell Me About the Sea” by James the Giant from James the Giant (2013)

We just received a sneak peak of this EP yesterday.  Here’s The Story

The Story

Born after the death of his younger brother in Afghanistan, the dissolution of his band, and the end of a long-term romantic relationship, James the Giant is a resurrection – a recommitment to life, to music, and to love. These songs embody the spirit that James himself carries into his everyday life: a commitment to honesty and an unwillingness to shrink from pain or fear.

The EP was recorded and John Vanderslice’s studio and is due out in mid July.  We will have much more later.

“The Ocean Stole My Love Away” by Christopher Paul Stelling from Songs of Praise and Scorn (2012)

Okay so we’ve been featuring songs from Stelling’s last album, but please check out his latest False Cities and check the Tour Dates below for a show near you…
