#E2TG Takes on Americana Fest 2015 – Part II

So, sorry no update yesterday.  The pace of life tends to increase during AMA week…

Wednesday began with a stop off at a meet and greet for No Depression at Grimeys, Too. To celebrate the release of  their return to print.

Then, I headed over to Tin Roof Nashville and had a leisurely lunch with my partner in crime, Sue Havlish and took in the Launch Party for the Ted Hawkins tribute album: Cold and Bitter Tears.  That event featured James McMurtry, Tim Easton, Ramsey Midwood, and Mary Gauthier.

After a brief respite at home, I drove to the  Cannery Complex for a way cool night of music.  First up was The Suffers from Houston, TX.  Seeing them for the first time, and I am hooked. So much soul and energy.  They even brought some Outkast  to the Americana stage.

Next was an something I have been waiting over 30 years to see. East LA band, Los Lobos had just won the Lifetime Achievement award at the AMA awards show, and their incredible set was a celebration of over 40 years of making music together. After bringing out guitar legend Jack Pearson for an amazing set of songs that included: “Not Fade Away” and the Grateful Dead’s “Bertha”, the band closed the night with a loud and furious rendition of Neil Young’s “Cinnamon Girl”.

I ended my night with a trip upstairs to the Hi-Watt to catch the end of the Secret Sisters set. They blew me away as always with their gorgeous harmonies.

 Thursday started with a trip down to the incredible Southern Ground Studios to watch the recording of an Acoustic Cafe session hosted by Rob Reinhart and featuring the incredible Warren Haynes playing songs off his latest (acoustic/folk) album, Ashes and Dust.

Then I flew over to The 5 Spot (actually, I wish I could have flown – but I crawled through rush hour traffic) and caught the end of the set by Bill Jackson and Pete Fidler from Australia. They were amazing.  Next up was The Mark Robinson Band who knocked it out the park celebrating the release of their new two-sided single, “Gone South”.  They began with the acoustic version of that song and then a few more acoustic tunes with an augmented band that included Richard Bailey of The Steel Drivers, the aforementioned Pete Fidler, and Luke Amelang.  They then brought it home with the power trio line-up of Robinson, Justin Amaral, and Daniel Seymour and ended with the electric rock version of “Gone South”.   David Olney rounded out the evening with week three of his September residency, and he once again blew it out of the park with a set that ended with a rousing version of “Chain of Fools”.

Next it was back to the Cannery Complex for a night highlighted by Ray Wylie Hubbard and marked with running into a bunch of friends.  I actually, reluctantly but prudently, called it a relatively early night and made it home before midnight.

Things crank up today with some day time events and a great night of music on tap for tonight.

So, I guess the sort of official AMA Fest things start today – or something like that, but last night things got off to an official and wonderful start with the Kevin Gordon CD Release Show at the City Winery- Nashville with Sarah Potenza opening.  You can read my review – here (currently on the front page of No Depression)

Tonight things get going in a pretty insanely good way with a throw down at the Basement East featuring so many people it is not even funny.  Doors at 7, Show starts at 8 with Campfire Propaganda (an amalgamation of killer songwriters all of whom I have raved about on E2TG). Don’t be late…

“Chase the Sun” by Millar Jukes and The Bandits

Millar Jukes is a Scottish born, Australian Americana inspired singer/songwriter who with his band The Bandits just released a new EP called Chase the Sun.  We have the title track for you today.

“Lilly Vereen” by Jesse and Noah

We have another track from the Driven Back album by Nashville based sibling duo – Jesse and Noah. The video is their 2013 CXCW submission.

“Galapagos” by Family Fodder

Another one from the excellent 13 O’clock compilation put out by PPNW Records out of Atlanta.  Family Fodder are based in London and formed in the late 1970s.  Alig Fodder forms the heart of the band which has had a rotating membership during their existence.  They have continued to perform and record to this day – with periodic dormant periods.  This is a previously unreleased track which was recorded in 1985. 

“National Funbike Tournament” by Discount Ravioli

You get some interesting results when you search for Discount Ravioli, but you do not get any videos of the band. As I mentioned before, their 21 track album – Robin Schultz and the 21 Prayers – was recorded in a tent in the wee hours of the morning following the fourth of July.  Since no video – here is the track for your enjoyment and future reference.

“Battle Cry” by joykill collective

“A disaffected call to arms”… joykill collective are a UK alt-rock band with a left-wing political bent and a poetic lyrical persuasion. This single was released last month.  Dig it!

“Take Me I’m Yours” by Squeeze

Honestly, I do not know how Squeeze managed to produced song after song of pure pop gold without becoming massively famous in the US.  All I can say is that the 80s were a strange time for music in America (but then again what years weren’t strange in that way).  This was the very first single from the self-titled album and the first track on Singles 45s and Under.  The melodies and wordplay are almost too good to be true, but it is true.

“My Camera” by Aaron Lee Tasjan

As ALT prepares for the release of his highly anticipated In the Blazes album, we have one of my favorite tracks from his release Crooked River Burning. I am not a studier of the markets for this sort of thing, but I assume there are people out there who dig cool music and who have not yet discovered Aaron Lee Tasjan.  If that is you today, there is no need to feel ashamed or inadequate, just get yourself acquainted and prepare to have your mind blown.  Aaron Lee will be playing the big to-do tonight at the Beast – so get there! 

“Gone South” (Electric Rock) by Mark Robinson

Preeminent Nashville Blues Rocker and Ear to the Ground favorite, Mark Robinson just released (as in today!) a new single.  Like traditional singles, it has an A side and a B side.  The only difference is that the same song is on both sides, but each side as a radically different version.  (Hint: They are both fantastic).  Today we feature the hard electric rock version that features Robinson and his band (Justin Amaral and Daniel Seymour) joined by the talented Michael Webb (who has played with Poco and John Fogarty) on Hammond B3 and Rick Schell (Pure Prairie League) on Background Vocals.  Thursday evening, Robinson will be celebrating the release opening up David Olney’s Residency at The 5 Spot. (Note the special 5:00p.m. start and don’t miss it).

“The Struggle” by Minutemen

From The Punch Line.  Watt, Hurley, and the late D. Boon tell all about The Struggle in :45 seconds. They do a lot in less than a minute!

“Think Too Hard” by Syd Straw   

What a better way to end this really cool shuffle than with our penultimate track from Surprise. Coincidently, the second song named “Memorial Day” to grace our shuffle in this last week.  This one is from Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen artist The Jean Jackets.  We have one last song from this album in our current playlist, and a whole other album to add.

“Cigarette Daydreams” by Cage the Elephant from Melophobia

Cage the Elephant are from just north of Nashville (Bowling Green, Kentucky). Melophobia was recorded here in Nashville and was produced by Jay Joyce who was in the Nashville band In Pursuit back in my formative years.

“Circles” by Pujol from PUJOL Sampler/Kludge

Daniel Pujol is one of Nashville’s best.  From his latest album Kludge and taken from a NoiseTrade sampler.

“Poor Boy” by Mark Robinson from Quit Your Job

One of the best Blues guitarists around, and a good friend of Ear to the Ground.  Mark Robinson is currently nominated for a Nashville Independent Music award.  This song – a take on a blues standard is from his first album.

“Blue Moon” by Tipi Valley from Blue Moon EP

Another E2TG favorite, Tipi Valley is up next with the title track from his latest EP.  Solid guitar noise.

“Absolutely Bill’s Mood” by They Might Be Giants from First Album Live

The live TMBG’s album on NoiseTrade is a brilliant recreation of the classic first album.

“Until We Sleep” by David Gilmour from About Face

Next, we have a song from Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour’s second solo album – released in 1984.

Another great track from Rock River – the newest album by New Jersey Indie legend Deena Shoshkes from The Cucumbers.  Delightfully wistful and delightfully free from empty sentiment.
 

“Out to Sea” by The Delta Saints from Death Letter Jubilee
The first of three Nashville bands which round out this Monday Shuffle.  The Delta Saints bring a little taste of the Mississippi Delta to what they call Swagger Rock.

 “Backup Plan” by Mark Robinson from Quit Your Job – Play Guitar

A song from Music City Blues Guitarist extraordinaire and a good friend of this blog, Mark Robinson from his 2010 album.

“Tennessee” by Great Peacock from Single
We close out this shuffle with one of my favorite songs of the last year or so.  They were the 2013 CXCW Best Dressed award winners – the year they covered The National and then teamed up with Wess Floyd to do an absolutely kick ass version of the Alabama Shakes’ “Hold On”.  This is a song that has been getting quite a bit of attention locally and hopefully elsewhere as well.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Chim Chim Mix

Well, well, well… we managed to stir up some controversy with yesterday’s Hall of Fame inductees due to our blatant omission of the Latin American singing group Menudo.*

*True except for the controversy and the fact that our omission of Menudo was not blatant.

As we prepare to induct the next three E2TG favorites into our HofF, we still do not have Menudo, but we do have a boy band of sorts to head today’s list.  (A Hall of Fame page is still in the works)

“Humdrum Blues” by The Growlers (from Paste Fall Pre(View) 2013.  The Growlers are a California 60s inspired Folk, Surf, whatever band. I can’t find that this song is on an album yet. But you can get it and other great music on the latest Paste/Noisetrade Sampler:)

“It Ain’t Easy” by David Bowie (from The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.  Did you know that this was a cover of a song by American songwriter Ron Davies who was the older brother of singer/songwriter Gail Davies? Me either. Now we both know.)

“Fooled by the Heart” by Nancy Apple (from The Memphis Belles – Past, Present and Future. I had the good fortune to meet Nancy Apple (The Queen of Memphis Country Music) a few weeks back at The Family Wash in Nashville when she played with Tim Lee 3 and other as part of the Troubadour Blues Roadshow. I got to share two of my favorite Memphis stories with her. This song is an awesome introduction to her music – for the uninitiated. The video I added to today’s Playlist is of a song she did the night I saw her – (the video is not from that night just to be clear.)”

“Barbarella” by The Bongos (from Numbers With Wings. The Bongos reunited on stage to help close the doors on the legendary New Jersey club Maxwell’s. Feed or Begin your Bongos obsession now.  And yes, Barbarella is the title of the 1968 cult film starring Jane Fonda – based on a comic book.)

Andrew Ferris is a British born singer/songwriter currently based in Austria.  He connected to me via Google+.  By the way, I have a nifty new URL for my Google+ account.  Anyway, Yellow Lorry is the debut album by Andrew Ferris which has been out just over a month.  His first EP was called Red Lorry.  I’m really enjoying this album so check him out.)
 
“A Song for Leonard Cohen” by Amanda Shires (from Down Fell the Doves.  Just about as close as it gets to perfection.  The awesome Amanda Shires who Nashville is proud to claim doing a long about the legendary Leonard Cohen. And it is a song that I think he would like.  I couldn’t find a video for this song, so instead, I included one of Amanda Shires singing a Leonard Cohen song.)
