ICYMI,  I posted my review of For a Thousand Miles, the new album by Patrick Kinsley and A Fistful of Dollars which was released today.  You can read it by navigating to the last entry on this blog or read it at No Depression.  The No Depression piece leaves out some information of interest to Nashville readers – namely that the Album Release Show for this album will be tomorrow night (7/15) at 8:00 p.m. at the original Basement.

The shuffle today is ready, so let’s get to it!

“Don’t You Feel Like Playing” by Christopher Aaron Slade

Another track from Christopher Aaron Slade who e-mailed me a while back and introduced me to his fun brand of kitschy, party rock and roll.  (My description and meant as a compliment).

“Drive South” by John Hiatt

One of my favorite songs from the album Slow Turning, and the source of today’s shuffle sub-title. A great song for when I drive down to visit family in Georgia.

“No Fun” by Jessica Lea Mayfield

From the 2014 album, Make My Head Sing…  which added a rock edge to her excellent songs.

“Safe House” by The Poorhouse Says

The Poorhouse Says are from St. Louis, and they formed in 2007. as patterns go is their new and first full-length album, and it was released late last month.  I have really been enjoying listening to this record, and I highly recommend it.  Great songs, a great sound, and an excellent spirit behind it.

“Lady Jane” by David Schnaufer

The late Dulcimer master takes on the Rolling Stone classic which frankly seems – here to have been written for the mountain dulcimer.

“My Intentions Were Good, But Fuck Me Part I” by Bashful Hips

Ian Fellerman aka Bashful Hips wrote the album from which this track is taken while he was living here in Nashville.  The album is called Too Old For a Coming Age Story… – it came to my attention via e-mail, and I am really digging this so far.  It seems at once to be a very personal and very political album – and seriously if politics are not personal – what the hell are they?

“Working Class Hero” by John Lennon

Up next, we have a song from John Lennon’s very first post-Beatles solo album – called John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band which was released in 1970. Really puts me in the mood for my day job…

“Railroadin’ and Gamblin'” by Carl Rutherford

Another track from the Music Maker Relief Foundation sampler we have been featuring for a few months now.  Carl Rutherford has an interesting story… all of the Music Maker artists have interesting stories. You can read more about Carl Rutherford, who passed away in 2006, here in this piece written by the great music writer (and musician/songwriter) Peter Cooper.

“Strangers to Ourselves” by Modest Mouse

And we close things out today with the title track from the latest album by Modest Mouse. A pretty nice way to end out the morning’s shuffle…

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Mother Knows Best Mix

I had the great opportunity to hear some tracks from two of my most anticipated albums of the year, and man oh man are they going to be good… keep your ear to the ground or stay tuned to Ear to the Ground for new albums from Jon Latham and Darrin Bradbury in the future.

In other news, CXCW is rapidly approaching.  Get those videos made and submitted

Now to the shuffle… as I have written on more than one occasion, I love short songs, but long songs make writing the blog easier…  we have a bevy of longer songs and thus we have only six in the shuffle today…

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); “I Shall Sail No More (No More Shall I Sail)” by Whale Fall

Whale Fall are an awesome sounding Instrumental band from Los Angeles which features lush melodies fleshed out by a cello and a saxophone.  I dig this track a whole bunch.  The album is called The Madrean and it was released back in December.

“Everyday I Love You More” by [debut]

Hot and fresh from my inbox to your earhole…. Another innovative band from L.A.  [debut] add an alternative flair to their brand of electronica.  The album is called Postcards from Berlin, and it is out now.

“Mother Knows Best” by Richard Thompson

I will redundantly say that this is one of my favorite songs on Richard Thompson’s classic solo album Rumor and Sigh…

“For the Sake of the Song” by Townes Van Zandt

Saturday was the 71st anniversary of the birth of one of the greatest songwriters of all time.  I grabbed this recording of a 1973 convert from Aquarium Drunkard.  It sounds amazing… and it is Townes!

“The Best Room” by Modest Mouse

The new Modest Mouse album is about a week away.  The album is called Strangers to Ourselves, and this is the second listen we’ve had here at E2TG.

“Rebel Woman” by Chiwoniso Maraire

We close out this short set of music with a song from the late American born, Zimbabwean mbira musician who was the daughter of mbira master Dumisani Maraire.  I first read about Dumisani on Valued Customers peacefork blog, and that is how I rabbit holed my way to this track.  A perfect selection, I think, for the day after International Women’s Day.    window.amznpubstudioTag = “eartothegro00-20”;

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Top Sider Clad Mix

Thank goodness for second wind…  I think I may survive this week after all.  On another note, the temperature is about 20 degrees cooler than yesterday at this time – welcome to winter in Nashville. I attended my first show at 3rd and Lindsley as a correspondent for No Depression/ND Roots.  My review should be up soon, I will post links on my Facebook page – so follow me there.

We have a pretty sweet shuffle to close out the week, so let’s get to it.

“Everywhere I Go (I Hear The Go-Gos)” by Phranc

The reference may be dated, but if you are of a certain age, you remember… From Folksinger.

“Atlas Shrugged” by Matt King

This is our last song we have from Matt King’s 2010 album Raw, and it is one of my favorites.  Next stop, Matt King and Killing Streets!

“Electric Worry” by Clutch

From Summer Sound Attack…. This is sooooo good.

“So Far” by Ben Arthur

Video directed by my friend Matthew Hendershot of #E2TG favorites The End Men.  If You Look for My Heart is such a tour de force… with such a variety of styles represented.  Including this slice of pure pop heaven…

“Coyotes” by Modest Mouse

How about some brand new Modest Mouse music. “Coyotes” is the second single from the forthcoming Strangers to Ourselves album. It based upon a true story of a coyote that rode the MAX lite rail line in Portland in 2002.

“The Intense Humming of Evil” by Manic Street Preachers

The Holy Bible turned 20 years old in 2014.  No not the book… the now classic album by Welsh band Manic Street Preachers.  It was the last album released before the 1995 disappearance of rhythm guitarist and chief lyrist Richie Edwards (Edwards was officially declared dead in 2008).  Stark and disturbing, the album is a startlingly real view into the mind of Edwards who was suffering from a depression, self harm, and anorexia nervosa.

“Kara Dean” by Ike Reilly

The first time I saw the title of this song, I thought it was about Nashville’s current mayor (whose name is just one letter different).  It is not.  The song is from Ike Reilly’s Junkie Faithful album. It is part of the 18 song retrospective Am I Still the One for You” which you can still get for free (donation encouraged) from Noisetrade.

“Harvest Moon” by Jason and the Scorchers

From their classic Fervor EP… the accompanying video was shot at a 1985 show in the Cat’s Records parking lot on West End Avenue in Nashville that this blogger attended – almost 30 years ago????

“Boscombe Armistice” by Blue Rose Code!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);

Off the album The Ballads of Peckham Rye – I got hold of this on the latest Feel Bad for You mixtape.   Blue Rose Code is singer-songwriter Ross Wilson of Edinburgh, Scotland. This was my first listen to Blue Rose Code, and I want to hear more. window.amznpubstudioTag = “eartothegro00-20”;
