Notes:

I was introduced to the music of Stoney by James Moore of Independent Music Promotions. As with most of the music he submits, this was an excellent discovery.

I’ve been hearing a lot about Nashville’s The Delta Saints recently. There music is a dark, spicy, soupy gumbo of swamp blues inspired rock and roll.  If you haven’t done so already, check them out as soon as possible.

It’s my birthday and I’ll play Bowie if I want to…

New music from Marla Mase? New music from Marla Mase!  One of my favorite new discoveries of 2013 (again thanks to James Moore of IMP).  Mase has a new EP due out at the end of next month.  I got a sneak peak, and so far, I am digging what I’m hearing.  The EP is called Half-Life.

How about some fairly new music from the Harmonica Lewinskies?  Don’t mind if I do.  Dig this song. Yep, it’s another #MCFK connection.

This is my last post from Bhi Bhiman’s awesome cover album Substitute Preacher. The Talking Heads’ classic gets the Bhiman treatment.  You can compare this to the recent Lumineers’ cover or to the original. Either way, it is a unique take on a great song.

Susan James  was another “discovery”. Susan is an amazing California Folk/Americana/Singer-Songwriter.  We go back to her 2011 album Highways, Ghosts, Hearts and Home for this incredible track.

We caught Mission South  at one of Grimey’s New Faces Nights at the Basement this past fall, and we captivated by their youthful energy and infectious grooviness. 

How about another from the talented Mr. Sam Davison. More #MCFK goodness.  I earned my Generation X creds when moved back home in 1990. 

If you have to have the flu – how about Candy Flu? Which is the name of the release from Psychedelic Rockers The Walking Who from Sydney. We got up with them on the Brite Revolution site.

The Shuffle closes in groovy, funky  style with some fine confections from the legendary Tom Tom Club.

“Jamie” by Darrin Bradbury (from NEW!!!!The Almost Great Crepe’s (Demos).  Song was originally on a 2005 release called Darrin Bradbury. So digging this music. We have a different song in the video playlist and the original release in the Store. I’ll post the Bandcamp widget to the Demo release below)

“Ring True” by Let’s Active (from Cypress. I added the Cypress/Afoot combined CD into the playlist shortly after learning of the passing of founding member Faye Hunter.  It’s been so good revisiting these amazing songs. This is the last song to the featured here, and it’s a great one.)

“War” by Sam Morrow (from True North EP. A California singer/songwriter.  This ones been in the playlist for a while. I like this.)

“Pocket Change” by St. Paul and the Broken Bones (from Greetings From St. Paul and the Broken Bones. Sweet soulful music from Birmingham, Alabama.  The song seems to be called “Broken Bones and Pocket Change”, but it came across as “Pocket Change” on the version I downloaded from Noisetrade.)

“How to Cook a Wolf” by Lys Guillorn (from Winged Victory. Guillorn is part of the wild and wacky crew known as The Grimm Generation.  She also has a long running solo career. This is her second full length studio album – ten years after her self-titled debut.  This some amazing stuff, which I will be writing about quite a lot in the weeks to come. This is reminiscent of (but not derivative of) some of the great songs by The Velvet Underground.  Further proof, and Connecticut is a hotbed of awesome music.)

“Message in a Bottle” by Bhi Bhiman (from Substitute Preacher.  From an album of original takes on some extremely well known music.  Here Bhi takes on the classic song by The Police. This isn’t my favorite cover on this album, but it is highly original.  The album has some amazing covers including a killer version of the AC/DC song Highway to Hell. For reference, I included a few additional covers of the “Message in a Bottle” in the Video Playlist)

“Telephone” by The Morning Pages (the Lady Gaga song.  It’s definitely a roots/Americanaish take on the song, but for some reason, I can’t help thinking that it sounds like if More Songs era Talking Heads covered this song after a long night of listening to Gram Parsons and Uncle Tupelo.  Or something.  I love it.)

“One More Try” by The Silks  (This Providence, RI band does a nifty cover of a Stones song.  Nifty indeed.)
