Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Melon Farmer Mix

Let’s jump back into the Shuffles with an extended mix of music.

As usual, time is short – so no dilly-dallying.  Which is a shame, really, because I am so good at dilly-dallying….

JUMP to the tunage!

“Just Poppin’ Out To Fight a War” by Cropdusters (we grabbed this off the September edition  of the Feel Bad for You monthly mixtape.  Don’t know much about this band – except they were British and were under-appreciated in their day.)

“Separations” by Diarrhea Planet (The red hot Nashville band with the attention grabbing name.  My advice – get past the name and dig the music. – On Infinity Cat Records)

“Love Has No Pride” by Linda Ronstadt (‘Cause seriously, seriously – what other blog will transition naturally and unironically from Diarrhea Planet to Linda Ronstadt?  No offense to other music blogs, but when it comes to awkward and bizarre transitions – there aren’t many who can (or who want to) touch E2TG)

“Everyone Knows” by Ghost Pal (Another from the Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen Section 4 compilation.  Ghost Pal are from Brooklyn and they rock in the funkiest, coolest way possible)

“Mrs. Wurley” by Humming House (from a Noisetrade live album. Nashville neo-traditionalists offer up more of what they do better than most)

“I Shall Be Released” by The Box Tops (Alex Chilton and company cover Dylan. Need I say more?)

“Every Mile” by The Parson Red Heads (A Portland band from a Paste Magazine sampler)]

“Dropped the Pop” by Killing Kuddles (one of my favorites from his Odd Man Out EP. Come to think of it, I think I’ve said this about almost every song on the record. And I meant it, too!)

“Repo Man” by Those Darlins (To help celebrate the release of the landmark Blur the Lines album by the Nashville favorites – how ’bout we check out their cover of the Iggy Pop song from the Soundtrack to the 1984 Alex Cox film. Bonus points if you understand how the subtitle of this post and the movie are related)

“Real Estate” by Wild Child (the more I hear from this Austin band, the more I like)

“Every Time I See a Plane” by Casey Black (really dig this song by the Nashville singer/songwriter)

“Rhymin’ and Stealin'” by Beastie Boys (’cause. Just ’cause.)

“Requiem for the Disconsolate” by James Crawford (’cause sometimes when the heavy metal kid from high school grows up and makes a record… I have a feeling this is going to be one of my favorite albums of the autumn.  Official release is just a few weeks away)

“See See See” by Ani Difranco (a live version of a non-album cut. From a recent Noisetrade sampler)

“Ava” by prattle on, rick (from his brand new album Some Quiet Majesty. Another new favorite of mine)

Wednesday/Thursday Evening/Morning Music Shuffle – Luckiest Guy in the World Mix

Railroad Bridge – Nashville

Good morning, I am back after a day off… my new earphones are still In-Transit, so today I presenting my mix of yesterday’s drive home and today’s drive in to work.  Jump through to the marvelous musical mixture…

Yesterday on my hot and sweaty drive home, I listened to the following songs:

“Nashville” by Casey Black (It’s always cool to hear a song about the city that has been my home for the past twenty-something years. It’s also cool anytime I can hear a Casey Black song)

“Paul Revere” by Beastie Boys (a history lesson and the first of three by Mike D, MCA, and Ad-Rock)

“Most People” by Dawes (This.)

“She’s Crafty” by Beastie Boys (I don’t think they are talking about Wendy Russell, but I could be wrong)

“That’s the Story of My Life” by The Velvet Underground (That’s the difference between wrong and right)

“My Whole Life” by EdTang (Seriously though EdTang is very cool. Check it out)

“Frank Lloyd Wright” by Joseph Mooradian (a singer-songwriter from Nashville. I first heard him sing at a coffee house show at our church a few years ago.  A mesmerizing vocal style. Check out his Soundcloud for tons of great originals and covers)

“Time to Get Ill” by Beastie Boys (song #3 of this mix from the Boys!)

“This Morning” by Human Face (New music from UK band Human Face!)

Music from this morning:

“The Witching Hour” by The Gypsy West  (I don’t always listen to psych prog rock stuff from Brooklyn, but when I do, it is likely to be The Gypsy West)

“Crows on a Phone Line” by Let’s Active (One of my favorite songs.  I don’t remember if I first loved this song because I used to write a bunch of bad poetry about crows or if I wrote a bunch of bad poetry about crows because I loved this song.  I’m not sure it matters at this point, but the bottom line: This song is awesome, most of my old poetry about crows was not awesome.)

“Till the End of the Day” (Kinks Cover) by Big Star (I never go far, without a little Big Star… seriously though, a classic Kinks tune done by Alex Chilton, Jody Stephens and company – just about all I need…)

“One More Time” by Taco Land (from Pancakes and Pizza – which is truly one of my favorite albums of the year. Joseph Russell’s voice just resonates at the perfect pitch in soul)

“Fields of Clover” by The Box Tops (Before Big Star – 16 year old Alex Chilton recorded what would become a number one hit in 1967. That was “The Letter”. “Fields of Clover” came a year or so later – and was the B-side to a song called “Choo-Choo Train”)

“The Remnant” (Live) by Josh Ritter (recorded at a 2010 show in Dublin.  The Remnant is on the Idaho singer-songwriter’s sixth studio album – So Runs the World Away)

In case you were wondering, this song is not called Pickle Chin – so get that thought out of your head.  The Saranac Lake, NY string band doing there thing on this penultimate track from their recent album.

  • “Wishing Well” by Vetiver from American Songwriter: The Best of American  Songwriter Sessions” (2013 Noisetrade release)

A stripped down version from American Songwriter Sessions. The song was originally the A-side of 2009 Limited Edition vinyl single released for RSD 2011.

  • “Midland” By Sam Morrow from True North EP (2013)
From Venice, California. A superlative folk singer-songwriter. True North – his debut EP – is out exclusively on Noisetrade.

Since we could not find a video of this song, we included one for the Clash original and a bonus video of Camper Van Beethoven covering another Clash song.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Opening Day Mix

Well, it’s back to school time, which means my morning commute reverts back, and the Morning Mix of Music goes back to a more manageable length – or something…

Let’s get to it – after the jump…

Pre-Shuffle:

Today 3/5 of our Pre-Shuffle comes from the Texas Alt-Country legends, Centro-Matic:

“The Massacre Went Well”   from their 1999 sophomore effort, Navigational
“Ninety Secretaries Down” from the 2000 South San Gabriel Songs/Music – original credited to Centro-matic – it is considered the first album by South San Gabriel (an off-shoot – sort of – of Centro-matic)
“D.Boon-Free (A Ninth Grade Crime) from Centro-Matic’s third album (also 1999) called The Static Vs. The Strings Vol. 1

Other, non-Centro-Matic, songs in the Pre-Shuffle were:

“Jazzy Mcgee” by The Blind Owl Band from their latest album. (2013)

and

“Triggers” by Beijing from their album Night. (2013)

Shuffle:

“Insane in the Brain” (Cypress Hill cover) by The Connells from When Pigs Fly (2002)

We earlier featured Devo’s rendition of the CSNandY song, “Ohio”.  From the same compilation (thought of and produced by Cevin Soling of The Neanderthal Spongecake) comes this version of the 1993 hip-hop crossover hit. The Connells – the North Carolina Alt-Rock, Power Pop legends fit the bill as being unlikely artists to record this song. It’s a ton of fun, though.

“Dancing Song” by Little Comets from In Search of Elusive Little Comets (2011)

A fun song from the Debut album by this Indie band from Tyne and Ware county in  England.

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js

“The Sarge” by Casey Black from It Shapes Me As It Goes (2011)

I’ll just flat-out say it. This is what a great modern folk song sounds like and is. At once witty and poignant, with a great hook and a great story.  — There was a recently completed research study that showed the significant economic impact the music industry has on Nashville. The great music writer Peter Cooper wrote a response in which he expounded on the significant cultural impact music has on “Music City USA”.  Fact is, for better or worse, Nashville has an embarrassing abundance of musical talent packed into our medium-sized city. It takes something indefinable to stand out – Casey Black stands out.

“More to Rust” by Sci-Fi Romance from The Ghost of John Henry (2012)

It is so good to have our friend Vance and his band Sci-Fi Romance back into the Shuffle, and to be reminded of just how damn good they are. The Ghost of John Henry  – a album-length take on the John Henry legend – is an amazing album – which we were proud to offer up in a pre-release stream back in May of last year. “More to Rust” is a stand-out on a album full of stand-out tracks.
