Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Girl in Me Mix

Today’s shuffle could have been subtitled “My Ever Changing Shuffle”… just saying

“Moontana” by Darrin Bradbury from A Car Becomes a House

Expect a real deal new album from Darrin Bradbury in 2015.  In the meantime, he recently released a new collection of demos including this place-name dropping song.  The collection also includes the crowd-pleasing hit song, “Junkie Love”.

“Whatever Happened to the Girl in Me” by Ike Reilly from Am I Still the One for You?/Sparkle in the Finish

From the 2004 album by The Ike Reilly Assassination…  another great song. 

“Zombies in Disneyland” (Original Album Version) by Doctor and the Crippens from Raphanadosis

A cheerful 80s British Punk Rock number that apparently has flown under the radar of the lawyers for Walt and Co…. I hope this exposure doesn’t change that… (*read last statement with a note of sarcasm – okay?).  Anyway, this song pre-dates the current Zombie phenomenon by about a quarter of a century.

“That’s No Way” by Sidestreet Reny and Lil’ bell from Holler

Holler is a great tribute to North Mississippi Blues.  This is a cover of a Robert Wilkins song.  Wilkins was from Hernando, Mississippi and was a contemporary of Son House and Memphis Minnie in the 1920s in Memphis.

“Whiskey Man” by Heather Powell from Believe it To Life

“Now that’s some damn drinking music right there…”  A sultry number that takes me back to some smoky bar from the 1930s or 40s as recreated on the holodeck in Star Trek: The Next Generation…  okay, so I’m a nerd and my cultural references are a bit skewed… I love this song… I love what I’ve heard of her new album, too.

“Whatever Gets You By” by The Features from Old Familiar Melodies – 2008-2013/Some Kind of Salvation

A brief but catchy song…

For some reason, this song always makes me happy then sad then angry then mellow then…. okay bad joke, but I do love this song.

“City of Refuge” by Abigail Washburn from City of Refuge

The awesome title track from Abigail Washburn’s 2011 album which I picked up at the thrift store and have been featuring ever since. 

“Hesitate” by Judah and the Lion from Sweet Tennessee

A great Nashville band that has been getting a lot of attention.  I recently found out that Judah is the son of two people who were a year behind me at my high school. To my knowledge, I have no connection to the Lion.  The band will be supporting Mat Kearney on his Spring 2015 tour which includes a stop at the historic Ryman in Nashville, Tennessee.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Jack Chick vs. Twin Peaks with a Twist Mix

I had a great night hanging out with a bunch of friends at a venerated Music Row bar and watching about a dozen or more of those friends make awesome music….

We have a delightful shuffle today with some cool songs and some cool pop culture references.  The shuffle contains old and new music of differing genres and points of view all existing in some semblance of harmony on my phone’s music player.   If these songs can all keep along, why can’t we?

“Twin Peaks Twist” by Messer Chups from Heretic Channel

It’s a good sign on a cold, snowy Monday morning when the shuffle begins with experimental music from Russia/Germany in the form of a mash-up of sorts of the Twin Peaks theme with The Twist? or least with a surf rock backbeat.  From Messer Chups’ 2009 album.

“San Francisco Girl” by Joe Nolan from Plain Jane

Our second listen to Nashville writer Joe Nolan.  This is a song about one of my favorite cities (even if I have only been to it a couple of time).  There is something almost Dylanesque about this song – I really liked it. Joe Nolan will be playing Short Sets at The Family Wash tomorrow night.

“Waiting” by The Style Council from The Singular Adventures of the Style Council/The Cost of Loving

A tenderer side of Paul Weller with this song from the band’s 1987 third album.

“Bunker” (Acoustic NoiseTrade Exclusive) by Heath McNease from Fort Wayne

Another awesome acoustic song from Heath McNease  from a collection of songs inspired by his film Fort Wayne.

“California (There is No End to Love)” by U2 from Songs of Innocence

Beginning with bits of “Barbara Ann”, a promisingly different sounding song from U2’s infamous new album.  I actually like this song.

“Let the Last Night Be the Longest” by The Jayhawks from The Jayhawks (aka The Bunkhouse Album)

A recent thrift store find – the debut album from Gary Louris and company.  Some solid songwriting – even as the band had not yet found their signature sound.

“See Me” by Heather Powell from A Haze of Grays and Blues

I was fortunate enough to get hold of a few songs from True Groove recording artist Heather Powell’s next album, A Haze of Grays and Blues (due out in the first part of 2015).  From what I’ve heard so far, this is going to a must have album.  A powerful song

“Lonely Mind” by Tex and the Horseheads from Tex and the Horseheads

I was reminded of Tex and the Horseheads after recently watching the 1987 film Border Radio in which Texala Jones plays a pretty funny (if irresponsible) babysitter.  I found this from what I think is a 2011 reunion EP.  Sounds great.

“Jack T. Chick and the Long Hand of Satan” by The Radicals from Halloween Rhymes and Children’s Crimes

As a long time… eh um… fan/collector of Jack Chick’s religious tracts, this track which seemingly features some audio of Mr. Chick caught my attention.  Beware the Long Hand of Satan….

“King Harvest (Has Surely Come)” by The Band from The Band

And we close out our first shuffle of the week with the song that closes out The Band’s self-titled second album. It doesn’t get much better than this….

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Wild Winnebago Mix

Had a good time at The Western Shore CD Release party thing last night.  Charlie and Kalee sounded great, the right-wrong Isaac was awesome, and it is always a great joy to see and hear Aaron Lee Tasjan. 

Well, we made it to Friday, and I think I am still breathing, so that has to be a good sign.

I’m a sucker for songs about driving…  Heath McNease has a pretty diverse and extensive repertoire, and this may just be one of my favorite songs of his. 

“Morphine” by The Oxford Coma from Morphine

I am a proponent of the Oxford comma.  Likewise, I have become a big fan of The Oxford Coma.  Sometimes, I need a little Heavy Psychedelic Metal in my life. This is the title track to their forthcoming EP.

“Play the Greed” by Dar Williams from Occupy this Album

IMHO, the Occupy movement (and I do realize it still exists on some level) was a great idea done-in by internal problems along with  “freedom” and “constitution” loving right wing governments quashing free speech.  In any event, I still support many of the principles of the movement, and even removed from the context of Occupy, this Dar Williams song is a timely and accurate description of the state of this nation. 

“Long Time Ago” by Golden Smog from Another Fine Day

We roll on with another cool song from Golden Smog.

“Infrastatic (Thanks Uncle Sam)” by The Oxford Coma from Morphine

#2 of the day from The Oxford Coma.  An odd brief track from The Oxford Coma with found sounds?/spoken word stuff… Nice

“Wanted (or Waiter There’s Some Soup in my Flies)” by The Style Council from The Singular Adventures of the Style Council

A non-album cut released between the band’s 3rd and 4th studio albums.  The band’s interest in American soul and Rhythm and Blues music is clear on this track.

“Every Breaking Wave” by U2 from Songs of Innocence

A bit muddled perhaps, but I still really dig this cut from the latest U2 Album.

“Mule in the Badlands” by Darrin Bradbury from A Car Becomes a House

Darrin Bradbury is hard at work on his latest proper album, but in the meantime, he recently dropped another swell collection of demos which includes this song about the American West and the native Wild Winnebago herbs which use to roam the landscape.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Ice Cream, Candy, Balloons, and Magicians Mix

“Ice Cream Konitz” by Lee Konitz from Essential Jazz Masters (1947-1955)/ Subconscious Lee

We start things off on this raining Wednesday in Nashville with noted Jazz Alto-Saxophonist Lee Konitz with a track from his legendary 1949-1950 album.  Konitz has worked with virtually every jazz legend in his long career including working with Miles Davis on the Birth of the Cool sessions.

“I got a boner for space, and gravity can suck it.”  Another awesome track from the latest, star-studded Built4BBQ sampler.  The Pistolwhips are from Albany, New York.  Fun fact:  I could not find any Pistolwhips videos on Youtube, but there is a Canadian band of the same name… Also when you search for “Space Boner The Pistolwhips” on Youtube, the first result is a song called “Astral Erection”.  So….

“Candy Loves Satellite” by That Petrol Emotion from End of the Millennium Psychosis Blues

We move on to this treat from the 1988 album by That Petrol Emotion – a band that formed after the dissolution of another band – The Undertones.  Sounds great all these years later.

“Black Balloons” by The Oxford Coma from Morphine

Next up is a song from the new EP from Phoenix band The Oxford Coma which is set for release in early December.  The EP was recorded live and has a raw, nervous energy that I really dig.  We’ll have more from this album as we go along. 

“Money Go Round” by The Style Council from The Singular Adventures of the Style Council

Some how in the aftermath of the mid-term elections, this 30+ year old song seems extremely timely.  A funky blast of early 80s British Pop music.

“Son House Says” by Low Society from You Can’t Keep a Good Woman Down

To me the best of modern roots music (sometimes called Americana – although giving anything a name immediately seems to put up some sort of man-made limitations) is that which honors the past while continuously pushing forward.  That is what I love about Low Society – a Memphis-based Roots and Blues band.  When you hear this song, you have no doubt that you are listening to the Blues, but then you are forced to abandon whatever kind of expectations that genre label creates in your mind.  We will have more from Low Society soon, too.

“Rule the World” by The Slang from The Slang EP

From the heartland – Columbus, Ohio to be precise comes some pretty awesome Alt-Power-Pop/Rock music.  This EP is their debut, and it is an auspicious beginning.  High energy and original music.  Dig it.

“Demon in the Night” by The Goddamn Gallows from The Maker

This is from the Feel Bad for You Halloween mixtape, but really, it doesn’t have to Halloween to get into this mixture of Punk, Bluegrass, and Metal.   A great way to begin to ease into my work day.

“Magician” by Golden Smog from Blood on the Slacks

First of all, I love the name of this album.  Second, this is a short and sweet instrumental track from the mid-west supergroup/side-project who have been making music together for about 25 years.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Mystery Train Mix

I realize that I have a music problem, but there are far worse problems to have… I know because I’ve had those, too. Music, though, man! Music has this amazing ability to make you forget your problems or remind you that you are not alone with your problems or just to make you feel good for the 3 minutes or so that the song goes on. Music also has brought me together with some amazing people.

Today, we have a most excellent shuffle which has helped me through a not so excellent morning….  Now, I want to share it with you…

“Headlights” by Ellen Sundberg from Headlights

Some sweet, sweet Americana music from the heartland of Sweden.  I’ll be honest, if I hadn’t read that Ellen Sundberg was from Sweden, I never would have guessed.  Honest, heartfelt, and a damn fine song.

“Mystery Train” (live) by Link Wray/Robert Gordon from Cleveland ’78

Whoever had the bright idea to put Surf guitar legend Link Wray together with neo-Rockabilly/Punk legend Robert Gordon should be in some sort of Hall of Fame.  Actually, if Wikipedia is correct it was Gordon himself who had the idea.  Any, the results pretty much speak for themselves.

“Palomino” by The Western Shore from Thunderstorm

I’m so excited to see The Western Shore perform live at their CD release party Thursday.  The amazing Aaron Lee Tasjan is also on the bill for what promises to be a great night of music.  This is another fine track off the Thunderstorm album.

“Saturday Nights” by American Aquarium from Burn. Flicker. Die.

Another day, another American Aquarium song.  I am so impressed by what these guys are doing, and I look forward to their follow-up album.  I wish everyone who says they hate Country music would hear this… hell, I wish everyone who says they love Country music would hear this.

“Not the One” by *repeat repeat from Deer Head Music Presents: Indie Mixtape Nashville/ Bad Latitude

*repeat repeat  (you gotta love the name and the asterisk) are reason number (I lost count) of why I love Nashville music.  Infectious and highly original music – this song fit in so well in this rather diverse mix of music.

“Cali to Cairo” by Sidestreet Reny from Tonal Tonics and Musical Elixers

Blues from Venice Beach, California played on a National Resonator guitar. For the millionth time, I am thanking David Horton aka Popa Tunes for turning me onto some great music that otherwise might have slipped past me. 

“A Solid Bond in Your Heart” by The Style Council from The Singular Adventures of the Style Council/Single

Yet another amazing song – this is one of the early ones –  from Paul Weller’s follow-up band to The Jam. 

“King of The Bun-Ga-Loos” by The Splinters from 1964 Single

I know next to nothing about The Splinters.  This was one of Popa Tunes’ contributions to the latest Feel Bad for You mixtape.  A nice slice of jungle surf music complete with yelps, screeches, and assorted other vocal noises.  I was happy to find this song on YouTube – so check it out.

“Some Days” by Sturgill Simpson from 2014-05-13 – Grimey’s Records – Nashville/High Top Mountain

The shuffle is going well, and I wonder where it will go next… the shuffle function knows that you cannot go wrong with Sturgill Simpson.  A great song from his previous album High Top Mountain.

Possibly one of the longest song titles we’ve featured – trust me when I say that the song lives up to the title, and I have a new singer/songwriter to check out. I couldn’t find this song on video, but you definitely should check this song out and go from there (hint: the September Feel Bad for You mixtape might be a good place to start).  Kye Alfred Hillig is from Tacoma Washington, and the blurb on the Feel Bad for You site name drops Damien Jurado and Sun Kill Moon – if you are someone who needs a frame of reference. Really just a great song.

When you find yourself smiling at the improbability of your circumstance, you know that despite everything that may be wrong in the world and in your world, that at least for that moment everything is okay.  For me, those moments seem often to be connected to music….

There are good bargain bin finds, and then there is finding The Style Council in the bargain bin.  One of my favorite Style Council songs.  And even though, I am more of a fan of The Jam –  it has been awesome hearing this music again and being reminded that music isn’t an either/or proposition.  So check your Beatles vs. Stones gripes at the door.

I will never complain about having David Olney in the shuffle two days in a row.  If he comes to your city, do yourself a favor and go see him.  I still can’t get over his amazing rendition of Kubla Khan to start off one of his Happy Hour shows at The Five Spot last month.

“Previously on the West Wing” by Bridge Under Fire from The Entrée (A Built4BBQ Sampler)/I Got a Guy for That

We first featured Bridge Under Fire when they were on the Built4BBQ Sampler called The Appetizer. Here they add some high energy punk rock to the shuffle with a song that wins the best title of the day.

“Smoke” by The Alternates from Download single

The Alternates were one of the very first bands I featured on Ear to the Ground – a little over 3 years ago.  Since then, I have followed them and their lead singer/guitarist Spencer Livingston.  The band recently called it quits after about a decade as a band.  Spencer is concentrating on his new band Livingmore.  The Alternates left us with a last single, and it’s a good one.  So relish this gift, and if you aren’t familiar, go check out their past catalog.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Egg Cream Mix

Some days, I like to provide a detailed and creative commentary of the connections which exist between seeming unconnected songs.  Some times, though, I just like to let these songs sit together awkwardly at the table while I sit back with a conspiratorial smile on my face (even then I have no co-conspirator).   Today seems like a good time for the latter….  enjoy the awkwardness, but remember that the connections exist even if we cannot see them….

“Pity Party” by David Dondero from Spider West Myhskin And A City Bus Reissue plus 2

I like to champion geniuses who should be more famous that they are, and I’m not afraid to county myself as previously among the ignorant masses to do so.  Darrin Bradbury told me to check out David Dondero (I don’t know why I missed out on him until now), and I did and I will and I will and I will….

“Surrounded” by Dan Coyle from Perfect World, Perfect Beat

Ear to the Ground featured some music from Dan Coyle back in 2013.  He is about to release his latest album (Perfect World, Perfect Beat drops October 21), and we have been able to hear the album ahead of it’s release.  Expect more to come. Good stuff!

(And the previous sentence sums up why I don’t play more hip-hop).  It’s not the hip-hop that is the problem – it’s me.  Regardless, this song – the first single from an exciting new project has a hook to die for… don’t die – just bounce!

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Puppies, Vultures, and Jackals Mix

We try to cover as much as we can in our all too brief time together…  Today our shuffle begins with a Hall and Oates cover, heads to a Top Peoples Health Farm, a cover of a 80s New Wave song by an 80s Punk band, some of the minor lakes of Wisconsin, a prelude, some words of wisdom (and a barn with six red stripes), some Nashville-based ska-core music from Built for BBQ, a love story straight from a shitty motel room in New Orleans, a song about Tibetan sites for above ground putrefaction of human remains as a place of spiritual practice, some early period Style Council, and a song about Fast Cars by one of my new favorite Nashville songwriters.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Fight the World Mix

So, Americana Music Fest week is over, and Nashville can go back to being this cool city with live music happening every single night all over town….  Even with being an official attendee at AMA, I managed to see some amazing music, saw a bunch of old friends, made some new friends, and discovered some new music which will be showing up on E2TG soon…

How appropriate to start things off with The End Men who made a rare Nashville appearance, shook up The Basement, and helped to wrap up AMA Week as part of a Post-Americana fest all-day show.  Also, today is Livia Ranalli’s birthday – so please wish this amazing drummer an awesome day!

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Traveling Mix

A busy week for music in Nashville.  Tonight it’s a Tim Easton live recording at The Building in East Nashville with Megan Palmer plus Darrin Bradbury and Tim Carroll.  Tomorrow – way too many choices, but it’s the usual Wednesday night joint a Fran’s with Darrin Bradbury and Tim Carroll.  Thursday, a Happy Hour of great Roots Guitarist including Ear to the Ground favorite Mark Robinson, plus Ritchie Owens and the Farm Bureau, Ted Drozdowski’s Scissormen, and Nick Kane formerly of The Mavericks at The Five Spot.  After that another E2TG alum, Pony Boy plays as part of a 5 Spot favorites show and the fun continues…

Maybe it’s because my life has not included nearly the amount of travel as I would like, I have always been drawn to songs, stories, and films about travelling.  With Dar Williams – you just can’t go wrong.

This song appeared beside Madonna, Foreigner and Journey on the soundtrack to the 1985 movie Vision Quest which is based upon an excellent novel by Terry Davis.
