Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Last Hurrah? Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js

Well, it’s Friday again, and we’ve reached what will likely be the final Morning Shuffle of 2012.  As I mentioned yesterday, I loaded up my new memory card with a random sampling of my digital music collection.  I left some space for all of the great new music to come in 2013.

UPDATE on Band of the Year Voting:  As of the time I am writing this post, we’ve had in the neighborhood of 1750 votes.  Brooklyn based The Disappointment are holding a 5% point leave over Skeletons in the Piano who are from Upstate New York.  Currently, New York band The Great American Novel are running third.  You’ve got a couple more days to vote. Voting will end just before Midnight (Central Time) on Sunday December 30.  Also, we need about 200 more votes to surpass our total vote count for last years inaugural Band of the Year poll.  So keep the votes coming.  Here is where to vote:  CLICK HERE

Now for the shuffle which is pretty mind-blowingly eclectic and includes some songs I probably heard for the first time today.  After the JUMP!

Amazingly all but one of the songs were available on the widget and the one that wasn’t was a cover and we got the original on there.

1.  Clap Your Hands by The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band from The Wages (2010).  (Rural Indiana Blues) I noticed that four Facebook friends Liked this band’s page including two friends from my hometown, a Carnie (of Black Jake and the Carnies) and a member of The Imperial Rooster.

2. Walk On by G. Love from The Hangout Music Fest 2012 Sampler – from G. Love’s 2011 album Fixin’ to Die (Hold the Special Sauce)

3. Virtue and Wine by Sondre Lerche from Faces Down (2002) (A Goodwill Store find and a damn good album)

4.  Saturday’s Child by Steve Almaas from Trailer Songs (2012) (Ex. Suicide Commando/Beat Rodeo: songs recorded in two airstream trailers in the Catskills – I’ve been a huge fan of Steve Almaas for years. This is a great record which we told you about right after it came out).
5.  She Floated Away by Husker Du (umlauts omitted ’cause I’m too lazy to add them) from Warehouse: Songs and Stories (1987) (The sixth and final album from the post-punk legends – completing a Minneapolis themed set of two songs – this is a Grant Hart penned song)

6.  Dinner by Blood Orange from the Dinner Btw Bad Girls single (2011) (Dev Hynes aka Lightspeed Champion aka Blood Orange – well crafted electronic based R&B music)

7.  Black Leaf by The Cave Singers from No Witch (2011) (Seattle based Indie music featuring former members of Pretty Girls Make Graves – this was one I downloaded and subsequently lost track of – I kind of dig this).

8.  Black Picket Fences by Walking for Pennies from Forget About Wonderland (2012) (awesome Mo-Grass music from one of the bands in our Band of the Year poll)
(Couldn’t find a video for Black Picket Fences so how about a Radiohead cover?)
9.  Wave Goodbye by Ty Segall Band from CMJ Mixtape – June 2012 – from Ty Segall Band’s Slaughterhouse (2012) (awesome garage punk music from San Francisco with rat-a-tat-tat drums and hard guitars – coolness)
10. Wake Up (Live in NYC 9/23/10) (Arcade Fire cover) by John Legend and the Roots from a download only release (2010) (Cool and funky cover of the Funeral single – The Roots are by far the best house band on television).

ICYMI – Ear to the Ground Presents Volume 1 (Download)

Back in April, we released our first download compilation featuring many of the artists we had featured up to that point.  The release was timed so that it coincided with the high holy Record Store Day.  As a year end treat, for those who might have missed it, I’m linking one more time to the Download Page for the Compilation. You’ll find all the details there.  And thanks once again to the great friend’s who contributed to this collection of beautiful music.  Happy New Year everybody from your friends at Ear to the Ground.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – White Tornado Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js <!– google_ad_client = "ca-pub-5465441380757075"; /* E2TG #2 */ google_ad_slot = "6306625404"; google_ad_width = 728; google_ad_height = 90; //

So, here we go… after several months of waiting, I finally have a 32GB card in my phone and to celebrate I added a random 20GB (left room to grow) sampling of my entire digital library and then I randomly shuffled that 20GB and the resulting Morning Music Shuffle is after the jump:

1.  TV in the Bedroom by TV Girl from The Wild, The Innocent, The TV Shuffle (Modern Indie Pop for your listening pleasure)* (A different TV Girl song in on the Amazon Clip Widget)

2.  Listen to the Rain by Neopolitan from Nashville Homegrown (a Capella from a mid 80s Nashville-based benefit compilation) *Not on widget, No Video – to my knowledge this song is not available digitally.  I recorded from vinyl.

3. Camera by The Oregon Donor from Burning Building Fall 2010 Sampler from Amazon (Portland Post-Rock, Indie band – based upon their Facebook page it appears the band is on indefinite hiatus – correct me if I’m wrong about that).

4.  I Love My Label by Nick Lowe from Best of Yep Rock Singles (from the 2008 Yep Rock reissue of Lowe’s debut album Jesus of Cool).
Wilco + Nick Lowe from the stage of the Ryman in Nashville

5.  Wilderland by Anais Mitchell from Young Man in America (One of the best albums of 2012)

6.  Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division Cover) by Radiohead (Actually Atoms for Peace) from Covers by Radiohead (One of the best songs ever! Dead on cover) *Amazon Widget has the Joy Division original.

7.  Grown Ocean by Fleet Foxes from Helplessness Blues (a great song for the cold walk up the stairs of the capitol)

8.  Chrono by Kraftwerk from Tour de France Soundtracks (groovy electronic music from the pioneering band of the genre)
9.  The Revolution Will Not Be Televised by Gil Scott-Heron from Ghetto Style (Because it won’t!)
10.  Sounds Super Recordings by Cornershop from Handcream for a Generation (I love me some Cornershop)

A Rare Stream of Madness Post 2012 in Review (or something)

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); <!– google_ad_client = "ca-pub-5465441380757075"; /* E2TG #2 */ google_ad_slot = "6306625404"; google_ad_width = 728; google_ad_height = 90; //

Well, well, well – 2012 is winding down.  A lot a of people are putting out Best of Posts and I have the Band of the Year thing – but that’s for my readers to decide.  Rather than some neatly organized recap or whatever of 2012 in Music, I thought I would indulge in something I don’t get to do very often and that is just write out my random thoughts as they occur to me.  I may supplement with some videos or other linkage, but for the most part this will just be my thoughts for whatever that is worth.

By my estimation, 2012 has been a great year for music. Chances are, you will hear someone name some random disposable pop stars of the moment as an argument that “music sucks these days” and then name from great artists/albums from the past and say, “music was better in the 60s/70s/80s/90s/2000s/2011”  The thing is, you can always make that argument and quite a few people always do.  Every year, the most mundane/crappy pop music of the day does not compare favorable to the classic/legends of the past – so it is in 2012 and so it will be ever after.

2012 was a great year for music because I say so. Not that my say so is that important, but it is for me.  Tons of great music have some through various media and into my ears.  Some of the best of 2012 include Anais Mitchell’s Young Man in America, Bob Dylan’s Tempest, Leonard Cohen’s Old Ideas, Justin Townes Earle’s Nothing’s Gonna Change the Way You Feel About Me Now, Jack White’s Blundebuss, Mumford and Sons’ Babel, and so many more…

Our friends’ The Dead Exs started a Relovolution.

We met and fell in love with tons of great new artists. In addition to those in our Band of Year poll, we also discovered some great music from all over the world including: Cosmonauts, The Danbury Lie, Shelly Colvin, Brennen Leigh, The Grimm Generation, The Amboys, The Dogs of Oz, Christopher Paul Stelling, Citizen Smith, Aoede, Cupla and again so many more.  Finding great new music was not our challenge in 2012. Finding the time to post it all was our challenge.  While you are here – explore the site.  Over on the right side bar, down the page a little, is a list of tags from the most used to the least used.  Check out our posts about some of these bands listed above or about of the other music.

In addition to the new stuff, we remain conscious of the fact that was obsessed with music as we are, there is tons of older music which has slipped past us, and when we “discover” some great old music, we aren’t ashamed to present it to you and admit that we missed out on the music the first time.

We also like to feature music which shaped our lives.  So, we can discover/ or rediscover the music of our youth and young adult lives.

For Ear to the Ground, we are completing our first full year of blogging (we started in May 2011).  We outgrew the Band of the Week format, we introduced the Featured Artists of the Month, as always our signature feature is our Morning Music Shuffle. We released our first ever down compilation (on Record Store Day) which featured several of our favorite artists.

In 2013, we have big things on tap. Expect a volume 2 of our Compilation album. We anticipate new music and a Nashville tour stop by our friends The End Men, we are exploring options for moving our blog to our own Domain, we look forward to presenting tons of great new music and continuing to find exciting ways to bring the music to you.

Clem Snide, the Boston then Nashville based Indie Rock band lead by Eef Barzelay, released an A Beautiful EP in 2003 which included the band’s cover of the Christina Aguilera hit Beautiful, plus a cover the Velvet Underground classic I’ll Be Your Mirror.  Also included was the album version of All Green which was first released on the band’s Soft Spot Record.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Beginning of the End Mix

A cold and misty rain here in Music City USA.  Reminder: Voting is heating up in our 2nd Annual Band of the Year poll. Right now, the Brooklyn band The Disappointment have jumped out into the lead. Sci-Romance, Skeletons in the Piano, The End Me, and Black Jake and the Carnies round out the top so far, but it’s early and anything can happen.

Shuffle after the Jump:

One of R.E.M.’s best records, Automatic for the People, turned 20 this year.  Today we have Find the River which was the last single released from the album.

Vajra is a progressive rock band with Eastern influences based in  New York City. The band is lead by exotic and talented vocalist/keyboard player Annemaria Pinna and backed by an experienced group of Alt-Rock veterans. The band’s debut record is called Pleroma and was released on the Summer Solstice. Now, just in time for the Winter Solstice, we bring you the lead track from the record called Inside the Flame
A beautiful seasonal favorite from Fleet Foxes self-titled Debut album called White Winter Hymnal.
We close out today’s shuffle with the title track from Langhorne Slim and The Law’s latest album The Way We Move. If you are not up to speed on the fabulous Langhorne Slim – the time has come to rectify that situation.  Start here:

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Not Gonna Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); <!– google_ad_client = "ca-pub-5465441380757075"; /* E2TG #2 */ google_ad_slot = "6306625404"; google_ad_width = 728; google_ad_height = 90; //

Time is marching on.  Hey, if you haven’t now is the time to vote for the Band of the Year. The E2TG elves are busy, so don’t expect much outside of Morning Shuffles and Band of the Year voting SPAM, but we have great things on tap for 2013.  Shuffle it up after the jump:

Stevie Wonder’s classic album Talking Book turned 40 in 2012.  Today we have You Are the Sunshine of My Life.

By 1989 Neil Young had left Geffen and returned to his old label Reprise.  Freedom was a big, bold album which produced the now iconic Rockin’ in the Free World.  Today we have No More from that record.
One of the bands we featured during our first year of existence was the L.A. alt-rock band The Hunting Accident.  One of the songs we love by them is As You Choke which we grabbed from a 10″ Master released by the band. It’s also on their Trees and Parks EP.

U2 are back in the shuffle for the second straight day.  This time we have a song from their iconic third studio release, WarThe Refugee features interesting rhythms, classic Bono vocals and strong meaningful lyrics.

We’ve been posting a bunch of Minutemen stuff recently, and we make no apologies. The band was known and named??? for their minimalist approach which included many, many songs which clocked in at 1 minute or less.  More Spiel from Project: Mersh which was part of the early 90s CD release Post-Mersh Volume 2 is an exception, at nearly 6:00, the song features minimalist lyrics and a free-jazz sound.  By their last studio album, the band was making still great but more traditional rock songs (3:00 or so).  This song showcases a band following their muse and letting convention and expectations be damned.

In depths of our pre-history, in the first weeks of the existence of Ear 2 the Ground, we (without much forethought – as is our custom) named a group called Maxim Ludwig and the Santa Fe 7 as our first ever Band of the Week (a feature which continued for 1 year ending in May of this year when South of Ramona was named our last Band of the Week).  Earlier in 2012, Maxim disbanded the Santa Fe 7 and started a new band called Drive He Said.  That band has just released their first music and we have a song called Run Like Hell from their EP entitled Multitudes.

Not finding a video for Drive He Said – so check out the EP at the band’s website.

Another early Band of the Week – the Canadian trio Inner City Elegance called it quits in 2012.  We wish all three of those guys the best in whatever they choose to do.  Today we have All Square so check out what you missed.

I don’t know much (yet) about the band Twin Berlin except Popatunes saw fit to include them on one of his awesome compilations and they rock as per expectations.  Check out Skulls and join me in getting educated about this band.
here’s a different tune (produced by Travis Barker)
Everything has been coming up Watt and Hurley recently which is pretty cool in my book.  Here’s those guys second band – fIREHOSE from their album Flyin’ the Flannel with Lost Colors.

Richard Barone (Bongos) solo masterpiece Cool Blue Halo turned 25 in 2012.  Here is Flew a Falcon from that great record.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Ring True Mix

Music from the morning….

Drivin’ N Cryin’ frontman Kevn Kinney released his classic solo debut, MacDougle Blues back in 1990.  It features Kinney’s trademark raspy vocals on top of plaintive, folksy music. Gotta Get Out of Here is the first song in today’s shuffle.

Chris Nathan is a Nashville-based soulful singer songwriter.  He has released a few EPs and albums, but the song we have today Never Needed Nothing is from a Demo. It’s a cool song.

We have a video of a different Chris Nathan song.

I have noticed an interesting phenomenon, whenever the shuffle includes a David Bowie song (particularly if it is a Ziggy Stardust cut), my page views experience a dramatic uptick. I guess there are a lot of Bowie fans out there.  If you have reached my blog because of the mention of David Bowie – well welcome and please stick around and check out all of our great artists. I am not including a Bowie song in a crass attempted to garner page-views – the shuffle has a mind of it’s own, but I would never turn anyone away.  Today, we have the demo version of Lady Stardust from one of the Ziggy reissues.

John Doe of X fame has had a long and celebrated solo career outside of the L.A. punk legends and their spin-off project the Knitters. Today’s song, The Golden State, is from his 2007 album A Year in the Wilderness and features Kathleen Edwards.

One of the most original and fun bands we’ve had the opportunity to feature this year is Nashville based Cheer Up Charlie Daniels.  The song that first turned us on to them is the raucous rave-up called Bunsen Burner Baby Blues which can be found on the Live in ’79 record.
Keep the beacon burnin’ ’cause it’s a blind blind world” from Beacon by Lone Justice from their second album Shelter.  I have to admit, Beacon is not a song I was as familiar with as other Lone Justice songs, but listening to it this morning, I decided it was exactly what I need to hear.
Could not find a video for Beacon, so here is the title track to Shelter.
In my opinion, proof of the unfairness of the world can be found in the fact that Let’s Active did not achieve global domination.  Again, just my take, but as I see it, Afoot and Cypress represent near pure pop perfection in the best possible way.  I listened to the stunning Ring True this morning, and I find it difficult to explain how happy this song made me feel.

Irish rockers, U2 were a huge part of my musical development, and by the time of Rattle and Hum, I was beginning to lose interest as my tastes evolved and expanded. So when Achtung Baby was released in 1991, the opening salvo was like a swift kick.  This stands as one of my favorite albums, I think, primarily for the joyful surprise it provided.  I have to wonder if U2 has any more joyful surprises in their bag of tricks….  We have So Cruel in the shuffle today.

We close out our shuffle with the legendary Australian rock band, Hoodoo Gurus from their second album Mars Needs Guitars! with the lively and fun song, In the Wild.
