Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Loot in the Boot Mix

Hey ho! It’s Wednesday.  We have a pretty fun shuffle today – 11 songs strong with some real curveballs and some real treats.  Scroll down or click through for the music:

“Where Was Baby Jesus Born?” by Annie Sellick from Let’s Make a Christmas Memory

From Sellick’s 2013 jazzy Christmas album which we featured heavily last year comes this soulful number.

“Surrounded” by Dan Coyle from Perfect Word. Perfect Beat.

Another great song from Dan Coyle’s awesome newish album.  Please check him out if you haven’t done so yet – you won’t be disappointed.

“The Body Snatcher, 1945” by Sci-Fi Romance from October

Yeah, Yeah… it’s December not October.  Time for Christmas tunes not Halloween/Horror-based songs… but seriously folks great music has no season.  I dig this whole album.  This song is based upon the 1945 film based upon a Robert Louis Stevenson short story and produced and adapted for the screen by the legendary Val Lewton. Val Lewton is notable for his work with RKO pictures where he was given lurid titles and a low budget and managed to make some truly remarkable films – like I Walked with a Zombie.  In the hands of E2TG favorite and CXCW alum Vance Kotrla aka Sci-Fi Romance, the film is reimagined as a damn fine song.

“East Nashville” by Sammy Brue from Bootleg Sessions VOL I

Sammy Brue appears on the cover of Justin Townes Earle’s latest album as a younger doppelganger of JTE.  He also happens to be a very talented young singer/songwriter in his own right.  He is from Salt Lake City, Utah, but his Nashville connection is strong – the album cover previously mentioned was photographed in Fannie Mae Dees Park in Nashville – popularly known as Dragon Park. And the song we feature today is named for one of my current favorite parts of the city.  

“Pedestrians” by The Slaughterhouse Chorus from The Entrée – A Built4BBQ Sampler/Download Single

The Slaughterhouse Chorus are from Albany, NY.  They play a rocking mix of Americana and Punk.  I had the opportunity to see them live in 2013 when they did a tour with The End Men.  This song is from the Built4BBQ sampler, and The Slaughterhouse Chorus are a major driving force behind this awesome collective.

“3-9-4” by Lemonheads from Hate Your Friends

Taking things all the way back to 1987 and the debut album by Boston punk band, The Lemonheads.  Recommended if you only know It’s Ashame about Ray and the Mrs. Robinson cover…

In what could be a first (but who’s counting?), a day after featuring the Tom Wait’s original, we have this awesome cover version by Neko Case.  It’s been a good week for Tom Waits and Tom Waits’ covers.

“Put the Loot in the Boot” by Mae West from Lit Up Like a Christmas Tree – A Vintage Holiday Sampler/Wild Christmas

The year I was born, Mae West – the Hollywood actress best know for her provocative roles in films of the 30s and 40s, made a Rock and Roll Christmas album (7 Christmas songs and one Beatles’ cover). I feel like this completes some unspecified step in our quest to cover every conceivable form of music.

“Tortured Birds” by Ron Muga from Wonderful Doom

Another great song from this New York Singer/Songwriter.  Ron Muga’s music can be found on Bandcamp. Check him out.

“Let Me Hang Your Stockings In Your Christmas Tree” by Roosevelt Sykes from Lit Up Like a Christmas Tree – A Vintage Holiday Sampler

A suggestive and absolutely fun Holiday number from Blues/Boogie Woogie piano legend Roosevelt Sykes.

“So Lonesome I Could Fly” by Marti Jones from My Tidy Doily Dream

We close things out with simply a beautiful song by one of my all time favorite singer/songwriters.  This is from her 2002 album.  I have to give a shout out/mention to the event which inspired me to add this to my playlist at this time…  If you are in the vicinity (or can be) of Woodbridge Middle School in Woodbridge, NJ tomorrow night there is a remarkable song circle going down featuring Ms. Jones, her husband (and producer extraordinaire + songwriting genius in his own right) Don Dixon, Marshall Crenshaw, and Richard Barone.  HERE is the link to the Facebook event. I will have to comfort myself knowing I got to see Marti Jones and Don Dixon in Nashville in the early 90s.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – What’s So Funny? Mix

Okay, Okay… I have to start off by setting some things straight.  In my haste to complete the post yesterday some errors, omissions and general crap occurred. 

  1. I am well aware that Slim Dunlap replaced Bob Stinson not Tommy Stinson in The Replacements as I originally wrote. This faux pas has since been corrected. Doh!
  2. I kind of blew by some important information regarding the Songs for Slim benefit project.  First that The Replacements contribution is just part of a massive project.  Second, that limited edition vinyl presses of the who project are being sold. Here is a link to the Facebook page for the project.  This is a very worthy cause.  I was extremely fortunate to have been Slim with The Replacements  (including Tommy – see I told you I knew that) back in the day at an epic show at the Armory in Nashville. 
  3. I neglected to post the You Tube Playlist for yesterday.  Here it is:
  4.  I reported that an arrest had been made in the Lincoln assassination. It turned out that an arrest had been made in the Boston bombing, but then it turned out that this wasn’t the case either.
  5. I posted the Grimey’s Record Store Day performance schedule, but failed to highlight a few cool things.  First that Paramore are performing, second that Pujol is coming back for the second year in a row and third that there will be a middle school orchestra performing selections from Beck’s Song Reader album of sheet music.  Not to mention Josh Rouse, Hotpipes, The Features! and much more.
  6. I have to retract a statement I made about a Nigerian Prince underwriting Ear to the Ground.  Apparently, that deal fell through.
  7. Finally, I have to apologize for my statement that if Anne Frank were alive today, she would be a fan of Ear to the Ground.  Turns out that if she were alive today, she would be about 84 years old and well below the target demographic of Ear to the Ground (we are geared primarily to nonagenarians and centenarians).

I was a huge fan of John Wesley Harding back in the day, but I have to admit, I hadn’t given him much thought in recent years, but I dig this catchy little number that deftly name drops Beach Boys, Joe Tex, AC/DC, Massive Attack, T-Rex, 4 Tops, Cornershop, Roberta Flack and others including the titular Robert Zimmerman.

  • “Shake!, Shake!, Shake!” by Bronze Radio Return from Shake!, Shake! Shake! (2011)

Broze Radio Return are a Connecticut Indie band. We culled this song from a SXSW mixtape but out by a blog called Yankee Calling.

In addition to the Nashville RSD festivities, I know our friends Tim Lee 3 are playing at Lost and Found Records in Knoxville, Tennessee.

If anyone else has Record Store Day events to promote, please let me know, and I will try to get it mentioned in the next couple of days. Bottom line people, support your local record store(s) not just Saturday but all through the year.

Pre-Shuffle:  In the pre-shuffle today, we heard a couple more tracks from the KidGrownUp mixtape by Christian Robins.  If you haven’t – check it out here.

 We heard music from a couple of totally unrelated but equally awesome Nashville artists.  Leroy Powell and the Messengers released their latest album, Life and Death, at the end of February – this is some real deal Country/Rock.  Grass Root Kids have been getting a lot of buzz in the past several months since I first found out about them.  Among their members is the daughter of a good friend.  They have a 3 song sampler from their Debut Ep Loose Change out on Noisetrade.

Rounding out the Pre-shuffle is a raucous and totally cool cover of the Hank Williams song, Lost Highway, by The Replacements from their brand new benefit CD, Songs for Slim. The record is to support Slim Dunlap who took Bob Stinson’s place in The Replacements, and who suffered a devastating stroke.

We had the good fortune of seeing The Slaughterhouse Chorus live on their No Tour for Old Men with The End Men just a few weeks back.  They play an awesome mix of Americanaish Punk, and it’s even better than that description implies.

  • “Waiting Around to Die” by The Be Good Tanyas from Introducing Townes Van Zandt via The Great Unknown (2009)

A Shuffle that includes a Townes Van Zandt song cannot be over-appreciated, and this gorgeous cover by the Vancouver Alt-Folk group The Be Good Tanyas was very much appreciated.

  • “Indian Ate a Woodchuck” by April Verch from That’s How We Run (2011)

A traditional old time fiddle song done up right by another Canadian musician.  For the video we have another April Verch song and another artist doing Indian Ate a Woodchuck since we couldn’t find a video of April’s version.

  •  “Power Failure” by Minuteflag from Minuteflag (1985-86)
Why not close out a shuffle that included a bunch of folksy, countryish music with a straight up avant garde jam featuring members of Minutemen and Black Flag.  “Yes, This is the way I want to…“

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Fools in Love Mix

No fooling, today’s pre-shuffle shuffle and Shuffle Shuffle have an interesting and entertaining mix of music.  We are short on time so let’s get to it.  Remember, as per our new habit, we have created a handy-dandy playlist which represents most of the songs in the daily shuffle.  The video playlist is posted at the very bottom of this post.

Pre-shuffle-wise we have the only non-instrumental track off the legendary Minuteflag EP which was released back in ’85 and featured members of SST bands Minutemen and Black Flag.  The song Fetch the Water is included below.

We also have a song from Porgy and Bess composed by George Gershwin and performed by the great Sarah Vaughan along with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

We have our first taste of the new album by Taco Land.  Look for much more on this great album in the days and weeks to come.

And we close out the pre-shuffle with another track from Dog Without Warning  who came to our attention via CXCW.

Albany New York Americana/Punk band Slaughterhouse Chorus just wrapped up their whirlwind No Tour for Old Men with The End Men.  “Amber Waves of Cocaine” is the lead track on the band’s 2011 self-titled album and also appears on the still hot of the presses Built4BBQ sampler called The Appetizer.  Both albums are linked above.  We have a random Slaughterhouse Chorus video in the playlist below.

We have another track from the Canadian husband and wife team of Val and James better known as You and Me.  They just produced a CD version of their self-titled album which you can get from the link above.  This song is a great example of the awesome folk-pop which we love from this band.  This song is included in the playlist below.

  • “Bess, You is My Woman Now” composed by George Gershwin performed by Adele Addison and Robert McFerrin from The Essential George Gershwin – performance from the 1959 film Porgy and Bess.

The last time we went to Goodwill, we picked up The Essential George Gershwin – two discs, 41 songs from $1.99.  We plan to go back to Goodwill soon.  The video playlist includes several selections from the 1959 film version of Porgy and Bess.

  • “Electric Sounds” by Sad Baby Wolf from Electric Sounds (2013)

Sad Baby Wolf was featured on this blog last year.  They are an Albuquerque-based Indie band featuring former members of The Shins.  Their full-length debut is due out April 9, and today we have the title track.  We’ve been digging on this record for a few weeks now, and we recommend you check it out.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Island Life Mix

Whew! It’s been awhile hasn’t it?  Been around the world and back… or at least around Georgia and back.  Got back into Nashville in time to catch The End Men and The Slaughterhouse Chorus at fooBar last night. Word to the wise, if you get the chance to see either or both of these bands live, take it.  It was so amazingly awesome to finally meet Matthew and Liv from The End Men in person. They definitely rocked the house.  And yes this means I will have to tag The End Men… again… they are currently the second most tagged term on Ear to the Ground.

But, let’s get back to what we do best… or most… or something… Pre-shuffle featured: Secret County (which I couldn’t find represented on YouTube, NY Dolls, Jill Sobule and John Doe, Chad VanGaalen, Japandroids, The Grisly Hand, Phil Norman, Little and Ashley and Tim Lee 3.

Nashville based singer-songwriter came to our attention recently, and we are digging his music.  We grabbed this song and tons more on Readymade Records Sampler 2013.  Readymade is Nashville-based indie label that have our attention.

Yes, I’m gonna hit you up about Couch by Couchwest.  Yes, it is still going on, and yes it just keeps getting awesomer… er… more awesome.  Since we last spoke, we’ve seen videos from our friends The Dead Exs, MAKAR, Don Ryan and Skeletons in the Piano. We also heard some great music from Wess Floyd and the Daisycocks (which is or includes The Great Peacock), The Lonely Hands, Dog Without Warning, Blaine Duncan and the Lookers, American Aquarium, and David Lott.   Go to the CXCW site and search on those or just scroll through and check out all the great music.

I am so glad this EP is available for your immediate download.  As the band name implies, this EP is the result of a 1985 collaboration between Minutemen and Black Flag.  The result was some experimental jazzy jams that is pretty cool.

  • “Waking Up” by Sad Baby Wolf from Electric Sounds (2013)
Sad Baby Wolf includes former members of The Shins.  We made them a Featured Artist back in 2012.  Electric Sounds is due out in April and you can pre-order using the widget above.  I got an early peek and this is sounding really good.  The Sad Baby Wolf song in the Pre-Shuffle and a cover of a Neutral Milk Hotel song which we previously posted are in the Youtube playlist below.

  •  “Wrong Way Street” by The End Men from Play With Your Toys (2013)
Fortuitously, we close out today’s shuffle with The End Men who are about to embark on their No Tour For Old Men with The Slaughterhouse Chorus.  We are supremely excited that they will be making a stop in Nashville on March 24.  Nashville readers – you seriously do not want to miss this show.  We added the official tour video plus a Slaughterhouse Chorus video to the Youtube playlist which is just below. New York rock ‘n’ roots bands The End Men and The Slaughterhouse Chorus join forces in NO TOUR FOR OLD MEN, binging on booze, blues and barbecue from Bushwick to Bucktown. Spiking classic Americana influences with liberal shots of punk, garage and rock and roll, the two bands present a raucous, unpredictable and, dare we say, intoxicating double-bill.
