Monday Morning Music Shuffle – A Mixture of Mixtures Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js <!– google_ad_client = "ca-pub-5465441380757075"; /* E2TG #2 */ google_ad_slot = "6306625404"; google_ad_width = 728; google_ad_height = 90; //

Let’s jump to the shuffle –

 Monday’s are a beast….

Shuffle after the jump….

1. Song: His Arm Has Grown Long  Artist: Alexander Tucker  Album: Dorwytch (2011)

Alexander Tucker is from Kent, England.  This is sometimes beautiful, challenging, darkly complex music that seems to emanate from some ancient place and channel through the mindset of modern experimental post everything music.

2. Song: Turn Away  Artist: Forgetters  Album: Forgetters (2012)

Brooklyn Alt-Rock – featuring former members of Jawbreaker and Jets To Brazil, Againt Me! and Bitchin’.  Nabbed this song from the latest Feel Bad for You compilation.

3. Song: Here, In Heaven  Artist: Elite Gymnastics Album: Ruin 1 (2011)
Vancouver-based electronicky pop music stuff…

 4. Song: Dance With You  Artist: Willie Ames Album: Night Owl (2011)

Not the guy from Eight is Enough and Charles in Charge (do go there!) ( Btw, that Willie has two As in Aames), but a talented singer-songwriter-musician from California.  Night Owl is a beautiful record and Dance With You is a beautiful song.
video for the title track

 5. Song: Where am I Growing Up To?  Artist: Diana Lawrence Album: To: Aging Children (2012)

A featured Artist from last summer. An incredibly talented songwriter/vocalist. I met Diana Lawrence at the Americana fest, and I’m glad I did.  Here she is singing with Phoebe Hunt, who I also met at Americana.

6. Song: David Foster Wallace (acoustic) Artist: The Ugly Club  Album: Songs from a 10th Street Apartment (2012)

Another E2TG featured artist from last year. The song, which first appeared on the band’s You Belong to the Minutes album – as did all of the songs on the acoustic Songs from a 10th Street Apartment record, is about the legendary novelist.  I first came upon The Ugly Club and this song shortly after I finished reading Wallace’s 1989 short story collection, Girl with the Curious Hair. A different The Ugly Club song.

 7. Song: Jefferson Combine  Artist: Slow Mover Album: Slow Mover (2012)

Some hard, stoner rock from the Boston area.  Nabbed with from the epic, Bong Hits From the Astral Basement collection.

8.  Song: Define a Transparent Dream Artist: The Olvia Tremor Control Album: Music From the Unrealized Film Script, Dusk at Cubist Castle (1996)

Awesomeness from the debut of one of the original Elephant 6 bands

9.  Song: Channels and Winds Composer: Phillip Glass Album: Passages (1990)
Originally part of a collaboration between Glass and the late Ravi Shankar. The version we heard today came from a Phillip Glass sampler called The Orange Mountain

10.  Song: Evidence  Artist: The Soft Moon and John Foxx Album: ????
Okay, John Foxx was the original singer of Ultravox (before Midge Ure) and The Soft Moon are a San Francisco neo-post punk band.  The song Evidence was recently released by Foxx and his latest band The Maths.  Other than that, I don’t know much about this version of the song (including how it made it’s way into my collection), but it is good stuff.

11.  Song: Cupid  Artist: Sam Cooke Single (1961)
We close things up today with the inimitable Sam Cooke and the classic Cupid.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Hail, Hail Rock and Roll Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);<!– google_ad_client = "ca-pub-5465441380757075"; /* E2TG #2 */ google_ad_slot = "6306625404"; google_ad_width = 728; google_ad_height = 90; //

Greetings from Sunny and chilly Nashville, Tennessee.  We are back with a real honest to goodness music shuffle, and we’ve loaded up our November playlist with a stellar selection of tunes from the distant past to the up-to-the-minute present.

Star and Micey are a Memphis based alternative/folk/rock/soul – oh hell, they just make damn good music. Today we have a live acoustic version of the song Number 1 which we got from a split Noisetrade sampler the band released with Carolina Story in support of their recently completed Soul Stormin’ Tour.

Here is the band’s recently released record, I Can’t Wait

Here’s Star and Micey from SXSW 2012

Coincidentally, our good friends Skeletons in the Piano posted a recommendation on Facebook to listen to Chuck Berry, and lo and behold, look who’s up in our Morning Shuffle from hours earlier…  We have School Days by the iconic Chuck Berry. It is the lead track from his debut album from 1957 called After School Session.

The always amazing Elizabeth Cook retells the biblical story of Samson and Delilah with the traditional song, If I Had My Way, I’d Tear This Building Down (which has also been recorded as Samson and Delilah most famously perhaps by The Grateful Dead).  Cook’s version of the song appears on her Gospel Plow extended play which was released earlier in 2012.

Current Featured Artist, Diana Lawrence is up next with another song from her To: Aging Children album – the stunningly beautiful Where Am I Growing Up To?

Here’s Diana with The Dishes

The always amazing Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros close out this morning’s shuffle with Give Me a Sign which came to us from the free Community Music Sampler – available via Amazon.

Amazon also has the latest Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zeros album Here for a mere $5.00

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Honest to Goodness Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); <!– google_ad_client = "ca-pub-5465441380757075"; /* E2TG #2 */ google_ad_slot = "6306625404"; google_ad_width = 728; google_ad_height = 90; //

Well, well, well… it’s finally here.  I hope you vote if you are able. I hope you take the time to read about the candidates and issues – read a variety of sources.  If you do that and you reach a different conclusion than I do, then I’m okay with that.

Remember if you don’t vote you can’t complain… actually, I’ve always hated that expression… The truth is if you don’t vote, you can complain, but then you should feel guilty about it.

Whatever, we have some music to lighten your load…

Recent Featured Artists and our good friends, The Grimm Generation are back with there follow-up to The Last Record PartyComing Home shows a band just beginning to hit their stride, and it’s a damn fine stride, too.  Check out today’s song, Come to Me.

Don’t have a video for Come to Me, but here’s the lead-off song from the new record. It’s called Blink I’m Gone.

Next up, we have an encore presentation of the rockin’ Avenue H from Vulture Kult from their release, Don’t Let Rock n’ Roll Ruin Your Life.

Here’s another song from the new record.
Diana Lawrence is one of our Featured Artists for November/December.  She earned that distinction with her beautiful melodies, tremendous pop/folk sense and her inspiring lyrics. We have another track from her fine To: Aging Children EP which was released back in August.

Here’s Diana from July playing with the equally awesome Phoebe Hunt.

The Lords of the New Church formed in 1982 by former Dead Boy – Stiv Bators who died in 1990, Brian James of The Damned, Dave Tregunna of Sham 69 and Nick Turner of The Barracudas.  Today we have a song taken from a compilation put out by Easy Action records called The Fabulous Rachel Moss Album.  This is a previously unreleased track called Gun Called Justice V.2.

Here’s the band from a 1988 show doing Gun Called Justice

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Zone One Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); <!– google_ad_client = "ca-pub-5465441380757075"; /* E2TG #2 */ google_ad_slot = "6306625404"; google_ad_width = 728; google_ad_height = 90; //
Well, well, well… it looks like we have one more day of Indian Summer here in Nashville before winter sets in.  Also, it is weird when there are still stars out when I’m pulling the car around in the morning.  When does the time go back to normal?

So, we have a good shuffle which includes a few bands who are new to Ear2theGround and a cover of a classic and much covered song:

The Chaw are a dark and bluesy rock band from Concord, California. They are about to drop their first full-length album (self-titled). The album comes out November 6 (so after you vote go buy the album).  We have had the chance to get a sneak peak, and this is a good one. Today we have Everything Wrong.

Here is the Kickstarter Video for this new album

The band is stream two songs from the new album at Bandcamp where you will also find the band’s EP available for Free Download.
I met Diana Lawrence at the Americana Music Fest. She released an EP called To: Aging Children back in August, and we have the beautiful pop-folk ballad, Praise for the Days.  This is pop-folk that reminds me of Joni Mitchell and Anna and Kate McGarrigle. Stirring and grand and delicate.

Here is Diana with Phoebe Hunt who we saw on the final night of the Americana Fest

Girl Scouts are a Philadelphia band who play recklessly, emotionally charged indie rock with abandon. They are tons of fun. They released a split EP with New Hampshire/Connecticut band Old Gray.  We have Buh Buh Bubbaram today… “Go Home!”

We don’t do much Jam band here at Ear to the Ground.  I guess it’s just not my thing really… but, I couldn’t pass on this cover of the Beatles’ Helter Skelter by Gov’t Mule featuring the great Audley Freed.  The song comes from the three-disc Mulennium Live Album.
