I am reasonable certain that late teens early 20s me did not give a whole lot of thought to what I would be doing 25-30 years later. I’m pretty sure, though, that that kid would be surprised to find out that I was going to ride a bus to Franklin, Tennessee to watch Webb Wilder, Bill Lloyd, Warner Hodges, and Government Cheese, and that I would be able to drink free beer on that bus. Not to mention that the whole show was going to be broadcast to the whole world over something called the Internet. I’m not even sure what part of that would be most surprising… Nevertheless, that is what I will be doing – riding the Blackstone Bus to Music City Roots to see some true living legends who I have been listening to and watching for over half my life. “Pure As Coal” by Tim Carroll

Just about every Friday night promptly at 6:00p.m., The 5 Spot in East Nashville hosts one of the cities best recurring events. Tim Carroll and his band (which currently includes Cameron Carrus on bass, Toby Caldwell on drums, and Luella Wood on backing and lead vocals and tambourine always begin on time (Carroll carries a clock with him to every show) and they always keep playing until 8:30 (unless subsequent event forces them to stop at 8:00). No set breaks – just pure rock and roll for the happy hour so happy it takes 2 and half hours to contain. The drinks are cheap, the music is great, and the company is outstanding. Surprisingly, there is plenty of room (reportedly there is room to spin a cat but I do not condone cat spinning so please don’t try that). Anyway, this is the title track from Tim’s latest album which you just might hear if you come on down. I chose a video performance of this song from a Music City Roots set in celebration of the show I am attending tonight.

“Woman At the Well” by Israel Nash

This is the lead track Rain Plans, the most recent album by Israel Nash. The music is described as “Desert Folklore”, and I would tend to agree. This recording was one of the World Café sessions that I have been featuring of late.

“Shotgun” by Bad Cop

From the EP Wish You Well…And Goodbye. Bad Cop are a Nashville band and primarily the project of Jeffery Drag Records founder Adam Moult. Ear to the Ground has featured Bad Cop several times in the past, and I always love when one of their songs makes it’s way in to the shuffle.

“Ohio” by Darrin Bradbury

From the Tur-Lyfe album. Expect some new music from Darrin Bradbury soon. Since I couldn’t find a video of this song, I am reposting his 2015 CXCW Video of one of his newer songs, Elmwood Park.

“Back Door Front Porch” by Shelby Lynne

From her latest album, I Can’t Imagine which was released last month. Shelby Lynne is the real deal.

“Get Work, Find Plans” by Batkhi Dahn

The avant-garde Connecticut band, Batkhi Dahn is back with another track from their Play 15 album. The band cites Violent Femmes, Sleater-Kinney, and Daniel Johnston among their influences. Dig it.

“Hot Dang” by Dale Watson

Ameripolitan standard bearer Dale Watson released his latest album, Call Me Insane yesterday. This is our first listen to that album, but it will not be our last.

“Don’t Think About You Anymore” by Brock Zeman

Pulling Your Sword Out of the Devil’s Back is the latest album from Canadian singer-songwriter Brock Zeman. He is one of the most unique voices in music, and I had the amazing opportunity to see him play as part of a stellar songwriter’s round at the Bluebird Café last month.

“Release” by Aztec Camera

And we close out the day with another track from Aztec Camera’s fantastic 1983 debut album. “Release” is Roddy Frame at his very best – an emotionally satisfying, purely crafted pop song – simple and direct with a powerful hook.

Okay… I’m tired – physically and emotionally drained, but I got a shuffle and it’s a good one… so let’s do this thing!

“Like Coming Home” by Matt King from Raw

Just is just a flat out great song. Matt King is a Nashville-based songwriter/musician whose brand new band features Matthew and Livia from reigning E2TG Band of the Year, The End Men. Expect a new album featuring this new band in 2015. In the meantime, I picked up with stripped down sounding album at a thrift store recently, and I am enjoying the hell out of it.

“Iris (Hold Me Close)” by U2 from Songs of Innocence

Another track from the audaciously released latest album from the long-running Irish rock band. As I’ve felt about much of what the band has done in the past several years, there is nothing I actively dislike, but also no much that I am terribly excited about. If you dig it – dig it – if you don’t – don’t.

“Where You’re Going” by Lindsay Ellyn from Shores EP

It’s always a good week when I get to see Lindsay Ellyn sing just about every night. A highlight of this week was her amazing Short Sets appearance at The Family Wash on Tuesday night. She performed a stunning version of Tim Carroll’s “Always Tomorrow” as well as performing the song that is in our shuffle today – a song about an amicable breakup.

“Wish You Well” by Bad Cop from Wish You Well..And Goodbye

It’s good to have Nashville band, Bad Cop back on Ear to the Ground. They were a featured artist a couple of years ago, and now they have a brand new EP, and we have the (sort of) title track. Some excellent Rock for my morning commute.

“Slow Love” by Prince from Sign O’ The Times

What’s your rush? The Artist Formerly and Currently known as Prince sings about the virtues of Slow Love.

“My Funny Valentine” by Victoria Williams from Sings Some Ol’ Songs

Another delectable Jazz/Pop standard from this album of great old songs. This is a Rogers and Hart song originally from the musical Babes in Arms. The song has appeared on over 1300 albums performed by well over 600 different artists. Here Ms. Victoria Williams puts her unique spin on the song. In the video playlist, we have a version by Miles Davis.

“The Messenger” by Brown Bird from Fits of Reason

I picked up this album by Brown Bird (featuring the late David Lamb) on Record Store Day this year, and it has been great having this incredible songs in the shuffle. We still have a few more to go.

“Drive” by Grey’s Fool from Drive

When Ear to the Ground started, the primary way I found new music was from Twitter. Nowadays, I get music from a variety of sources, but it’s good to get back to where I began. I am pretty sure that is how I was introduced to this band. Gray’s Fool are a singer/songwriter duo from Pittsburgh. A strong song – lyrical and yes – driving. Digging the male/female vocals on this track.

Some blogs would drop off the Halloween tracks once that day passed. But, as we have long established, #E2TG is not your run-of-the-mill, Brand X music blog. We first came across The Radicals on the Built4BBQ sampler. They recently made their 2011 Halloween album available for free download, and we jump all over it. This is a wholesome, uplifting song about the joy of Halloween and children and candy… or maybe it’s not.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Adaptation Mix

Here at E2TG we are all about adapting to circumstances beyond our control. Most of our best ideas were born out of necessity…

With my earphones still on the fritz (although I’m suspecting it may be the earphone jack – which would suck since I’m just 10 months or so into a two year contract…), I decided to make some changes.

The first part of today’s mix came from a drive across town I took last night while the second part is from this morning’s commute. It all washes out, and we have 12 great songs for your enjoyment and edutainment.

“Ain’t No Sunshine” by Humming House (Humming House are a great Nashville band that recently added the amazing Leslie Rodriquez to their line-up – trust me, this is a very good thing. This cover of the Bill Withers’ song, is from the pre-Leslie era, and a nice way to introduce the band. E2TG trivia – our good friends Valued Customer also have a cover of this song)

“XXXtra Dreamy” by Dead Pop Stars Society from Dead Pop Stars Society (due out tomorrow)

Dead Pop Stars Society is the new collaboration between MF Rex and Salvador G, founders of NYC DJ crew Automatic Reaction. The entire album offers a relentless collection of mad beats, hyper-familiar samples, and some amazing sounds. It’s a wild ride to be sure.

With just over a week to go, you may still be unsure which of our awesome Featured Artists to vote for in the Band of the Month poll. While, we try to stay neutral on this important decision (the whole point of letting readers vote is that we are too codependent to make a decision ourselves), we do have some valuable and not so valuable information to share which may just make your decision easier.

	Indie Nashville Imprint Signs Exciting New Deal With Esteemed Distributor

There must be something in the water down in Nashville that has lead to the recent rise in buzzing talent in Tennessee’s “Music City.” One of the best examples of this is Jeffery Drag Records, a young label that has consistently released quality, southern-fried jams for the last three years. What began as a vessel for co-founders Adam Moult and Mike Gicz to release cassettes for their band Bad Cop has expanded to include Natural Child, Useless Eaters, Turbo Fruits, and Pujol. And now, Jeffery Drag has signed a distribution deal with the highly coveted Frenchkiss Label Group (FKLG).

Frenchkiss creator Syd Butler feels that JDR will be a welcome addition to his company’s roster. “We’re incredibly excited to have Jeffery Drag coming aboard the Frenchkiss family and to see them grow as a label as they continue to put out a steady stream of extremely high-energy rock records,” says Syd. In joining with the FKLG, Jeffery Drag will gain a worldwide digital retail presence, a team of seasoned industry veterans who will help them expand their label’s business as well as roster, and a family of labels that will support and nurture the JDR team.

The recently executed deal will position Jeffery Drag Records within the Frenchkiss Label Group family of independent labels. FKLG specializes in a “handshake mentality” when it comes to music distribution, emphasizing the nurturing and connecting of label communities in order to grow an imprint’s visibility. This professional ideology, coupled with their recent partnership with The Orchard, gives Frenchkiss a solid and experienced foundation that aims at delivering and streamlining distribution.

SONG # 1: Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings (Father John Misty cover) as performed by previous month Featured Artist PonyBoy.

SONG # 2: Hopeless Romantic is a song by the New Hampshire band Signalfire from their album Don’t Trust This Storm which after a long delay was released in June of this year. Signalfire is comprised of three brothers named Hansen and a cousin named Nelson. Got it?

And finally Song #3: Amores Perros (Summer of Love) by one of our current month Featured Artists, Bad Cop. The song comes from the band’s 2010 album Harvest the Beast.
