Good morning, I am back after a day off… my new earphones are still In-Transit, so today I presenting my mix of yesterday’s drive home and today’s drive in to work. Jump through to the marvelous musical mixture…

Yesterday on my hot and sweaty drive home, I listened to the following songs:

“Nashville” by Casey Black (It’s always cool to hear a song about the city that has been my home for the past twenty-something years. It’s also cool anytime I can hear a Casey Black song)

“Paul Revere” by Beastie Boys (a history lesson and the first of three by Mike D, MCA, and Ad-Rock)

“Most People” by Dawes (This.)

“She’s Crafty” by Beastie Boys (I don’t think they are talking about Wendy Russell, but I could be wrong)

“That’s the Story of My Life” by The Velvet Underground (That’s the difference between wrong and right)

“Frank Lloyd Wright” by Joseph Mooradian (a singer-songwriter from Nashville. I first heard him sing at a coffee house show at our church a few years ago. A mesmerizing vocal style. Check out his Soundcloud for tons of great originals and covers)

“Crows on a Phone Line” by Let’s Active (One of my favorite songs. I don’t remember if I first loved this song because I used to write a bunch of bad poetry about crows or if I wrote a bunch of bad poetry about crows because I loved this song. I’m not sure it matters at this point, but the bottom line: This song is awesome, most of my old poetry about crows was not awesome.)

“Till the End of the Day” (Kinks Cover) by Big Star (I never go far, without a little Big Star… seriously though, a classic Kinks tune done by Alex Chilton, Jody Stephens and company – just about all I need…)

“One More Time” by Taco Land (from Pancakes and Pizza – which is truly one of my favorite albums of the year. Joseph Russell’s voice just resonates at the perfect pitch in soul)

“Fields of Clover” by The Box Tops (Before Big Star – 16 year old Alex Chilton recorded what would become a number one hit in 1967. That was “The Letter”. “Fields of Clover” came a year or so later – and was the B-side to a song called “Choo-Choo Train”)

“The Remnant” (Live) by Josh Ritter (recorded at a 2010 show in Dublin. The Remnant is on the Idaho singer-songwriter’s sixth studio album – So Runs the World Away)

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Bobby Freaking Keys Mix

I’m doing a super quick mix today, but for good reason, I used my lunch hour to walk a couple of blocks to see legendary (I mean LEGENDARY) sax man Bobby Keys with his excellent band that includes former Georgia Satellite and current leader of Homemade Sin and member of The Bluefields Dan Baird. I only had time to stay for the first part, but they ripped through a set that included a few Stones songs, a George Harrison number, and Joe Cocker’s version of the Box Tops’ song. All of which featured Mr. Keys in their original versions.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Adaptation Mix

Here at E2TG we are all about adapting to circumstances beyond our control. Most of our best ideas were born out of necessity…

With my earphones still on the fritz (although I’m suspecting it may be the earphone jack – which would suck since I’m just 10 months or so into a two year contract…), I decided to make some changes.

The first part of today’s mix came from a drive across town I took last night while the second part is from this morning’s commute. It all washes out, and we have 12 great songs for your enjoyment and edutainment.

“Ain’t No Sunshine” by Humming House (Humming House are a great Nashville band that recently added the amazing Leslie Rodriquez to their line-up – trust me, this is a very good thing. This cover of the Bill Withers’ song, is from the pre-Leslie era, and a nice way to introduce the band. E2TG trivia – our good friends Valued Customer also have a cover of this song)

“Stand Your Ground” by Killing Kuddles (from the fabulous Odd Man Out EP)

“Little Bit of White Trash” by Jeff Porter (great song – the video in the Playlist features Bob Walkenhorst who was in the great band, The Rainmakers)

“Lights On (Two Fresh Remix) by Bad Cop (former Featured Artist at E2TG – Bad Cop are rising stars out of the Nashville Indie scene. From the recent Jeffery Drag Sampler – the label was created by Bad Copy frontman Adam Moult.)

“Weird Weather” by Tim Lee 3 (Another great one from our Knoxville friends – “been some weird, weird weather hangin’ over my house.”)

“You’re No Good” by Linda Ronstadt (A classic by the amazing Ms. Ronstadt. Sending out all good thoughts and prayers to her (she recently announced her diagnosis of Parkinsons Disease which has left her unable to sing) – and lots and lots of gratitude for the great music she gave us.)

“I See Red” by X (It is darn near impossible to listen to this song and not move your feet. One of the fastest songs on More Fun in the New World) – takes us into this mornings Music

“XXXtra Dreamy” by Dead Pop Stars Society from Dead Pop Stars Society (due out tomorrow)

Dead Pop Stars Society is the new collaboration between MF Rex and Salvador G, founders of NYC DJ crew Automatic Reaction. The entire album offers a relentless collection of mad beats, hyper-familiar samples, and some amazing sounds. It’s a wild ride to be sure.

“Last Stop” by Black Jake and the Carnies from Watching, Waiting (2013)

Up next are our friends from Ypsilanti, Michigan with, Last Stop, a locomotive powered instrumental from their recent Watching, Waiting EP – one our favorites of 2013.

A reggae, rock, dub band from Nashville. They are awesome, and I have a feeling I’ll be listening to a lot more of them.

“‘Merican” by Descendents from Cool to Be You (2004)

Seminal California punk band from their 2004 album. I’ve never seen Descendents live, but I did see All back in the early 90s. All = Descendents – Milo.

“The Music In my Headphones” by Telepathic Teddy Bear from Reactions (2011)

Appropriate or Ironic – as I struggled to keep one ear piece working on my damn earphones, this song by Telepathic Teddy Bear comes up. Cool song, though (I’ve heard it in more than one ear before).

“Halo Days (4 ‘Drew)” by Tim Lee 3 from Devil’s Rope (2013)

Time for one more song. Tim Lee 3 recently were out west recording some music for their follow-up to Devil’s Rope. While we can’t expect a new Tim Lee 3 album until early 2014, they have gift us (and by us I mean all of us) with a new track. You can check out Magnolia Plates – here .

I make no secret of the fact that I am a big Damien Jurado fan. I actually first came across his music by accident – in a way. This song is gorgeous and subtle and well… just great.

“Cryin’ Like A Fool” by Jerry McCain from Rock ‘n’ Roll Ball (1997)

We close out with a track from early rock/blue legend Jerry McCain – he’s cryin’ like a fool… no really!

I know it’s going to be a good morning mix when it begins with the inimitable Don Ryan. What can you say about a guy who loves ICP, Townes, Pantera, Nickelback, and One Direction* and who makes great music that manages to not really sound like any of those artists*.

“Top of the World” by Don Ryan (recorded live in the studio. It’s so good to be getting some new music from Don Ryan and company – looking forward to more.)

“Get in Line” by Ron Sexsmith (for some reason, I always get Ron Sexsmith and Charlie Sexton mixed up. Musically, they are not similar so it must be the sex in the name. I’ve always gotten mixed up when it comes to sex.)

“Piece of Peace” by Marla Mase (From Scream (Deluxe) – one of our favorite albums of the year)

“Pull My Coat” by Mark Robinson (from Have Axe – Will Groove – another favorite album of the year. A great blues guitarist from (East) Nashville)

Dog Without Warning were one of my big take-aways from CXCW this year. I began featuring their Go Girl album. When the band contacted me to give their new EP a listen, I was blown away. Not only was this a huge change of direction, it was also an excellent record with some memorable songs.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Run Boy Mix

As I write this, I hear thunder behind me and the gentle, almost soothing sounds of car tires moving across wet city streets. It’s August 20, 2013, and I am alive, and though not perfect by any means, life is good.

As of this date, I have been writing Ear to the Ground for 2 years and about 3 months. The blog has not made me rich or very famous, but I consider it a huge success nonetheless. Because of the blog, I’ve been fortunate enough to meet some incredible and talented and just generally good people. I heard tons more music than I would have had I not written the blog. Every so often, I see one of my quotes in the promotional material of a band I’ve written about.

I’m not sure why I’m writing all this right now, but it seemed like as good a time as any to remind myself why I do this.

This morning brought an interesting mix of music. Let’s get to it – after the jump…

Pre-Shuffle…

“Lift Up” by prattle on, rick (I’ve become a big prattle on, rick fan. This one comes from his Communion Bread record which features a building on the cover that I used to drive by almost every day)

“Stained Glass Window” by Courrier (from Cathedrals of Color – This band has had songs placed in several television series. They play huge, expansive music reminiscent of Coldplay and some U2. These other bands are listed for comparison purposes only. I do think it is possible to not dig Coldplay or U2, and to love Courrier)

“Rusted Rain” by The Blind Owl Band (This New York state band released their latest album within the past month or so. This Train I Ride is Made of Wood and Steel is chock full of great music.)

“The Ballad of Billy Polk” by The End Men (from Play with Your Toys… if you listen to just one The End Men song, listen to “The Ballad of Billy Polk” and then listen to all their other songs because they are awesome.

Shuffle…

“Good Country Girl” By Alexander Hudjohn Feat Katherine Hudjohn from Good Country Girl (single – 2013)

Just a flat out cool song. Couldn’t find a video for this song, so we added a CXCW video from 2012.

“Soldier Boy Johnny” by The Imperial Rooster from Cluckaphony (2013)

Yet another song from the fabulous song from the incredible 2013 release from Espanola’s own The Imperial Rooster.

“Moon Gate” by Peace of the South

We have a pretty interesting mix of music today. Any time a week begins with a Townes Van Zandt song, it a great sign.

“U-Haul in the Driveway” by Susan James (also from Driving Toward the Sun – btw, the two videos included in today’s PLAYLIST are from two separate CD Release shows – one for this album, the other for the predecessor – DJ Bonebrake of X fame appears prominently in the older video)

“In New York City” by Brad Jones (Nashville singer/songwriter sings about the greatest city in the world).

“I Can Live Forever If I Slowly Die” by Chris Schlarb from Psychic Temple (2010)

A nine plus minute jazz oriented instrumental – remarkable and mind expanding. Schlarb released Psychic Temple II this year – the new album features new takes on songs by Brian Wilson, Frank Zappa, and Joe Jackson

“Ponzi Scheme” by Eric Brace and Peter Cooper from The Comeback Album (2013)

A pair of amazing singer/songwriters who help make the case for East Nashville being the coolest place on earth. (‘though I’m proud to rep for South Nashville!)

“Emotion as Weapon” by Telepathic Teddy Bear from Reactions (2011)

I’ve said it before (or something similar), if you are going to make music under the name Telepathic Teddy Bear – you’d better make it awesome. Forget the name, this is some really cool music. Don’t forget the name – Telepathic Teddy Bear.
