As I stumble, unwillingly and unwittingly into another work week, I am grateful for a pretty sweet music shuffle to get things rolling…  In this shuffle are some classics, some obscure stuff, and some pretty new stuff.  It is all worth your attention.

“I’m in Love With a Girl” by Big Star

“I never travel far, without a little Big Star….”  Never a bad way to start a week, the legendary Memphis band from their 2nd album Radio City. Power Pop at it’s absolute finest.

“Atlantic City” by Ben Arthur

Another track from Call and Response… Ben Arthur swings for the fences and answers the Bruce Springsteen song from Nebraska.

“When We Was Young” by Black Vincent

This has become one of my favorite albums of the year so far, and I really dig this track.

“Gum in Your Hair” by A Color Engine

A lost classic? Perhaps.  As the long wait for the new Don Ryan album continues, we dive back into this release from his old band with Eric Burchfield of Elephant Goes West.

“Suboceana” by Tom Tom Club

“Boom Boom Chi Boom Boom!”  We complete our revisit to the classic 1988 album by the band lead by the rhythm section from Talking Heads.

“Vigilantes” by The Vigilance Committee

Progressive concept album.  This track really reminds me a lot of the Accomplices EP series from Gypsy West. And that is a very good thing.

“Tiene Cabeza de Palo” by Dale Watson

Another from Dale Watson’s new album, Call Me Insane, and a reminder why Google Translate is your friend.

“Walter Reed” by Ben Arthur

Our second Ben Arthur song of the shuffle – this one is an “answer” to the Michael Penn song, “Walter Reed” which is on his album Mr. Hollywood Jr, 1947.

Well…. we made it to mid-week.  Last night was a blast.  I walked down from work to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum for the CD Release Show for the Dylan, Cash, and the Nashville Cats (the 2 CD Set accompanies the exhibit currently running).  Bill Lloyd and the phenomenal Long Players served as the core band and were joined by an all-star lineup that included some of the players on the original recordings (like Al Kooper) as well as family members like John Carter Cash, Jamie Hartford, Britt Ronstadt.  Charlie Daniels, Michael Nesmith (Monkees), Julie Christensen, Kathy Mattea, Radney Foster, Jason Ringenberg and many more made for a memorable event.  A brief rain delay did not seem to chase to many people away.

After that show, I headed to the Hi Watt to catch Heathen Sons (who were really good) – they are competing in Music City Mayhem for a slot playing Live on the Green so check them out and give them a vote if you can.  Benchmarks were next.  Formerly known as Todd Farrell and the Dirty Birds, Benchmarks just recently released a new EP which we will be presenting soon.  The band had not played together in a few months, but they really sounded good to me, and as always, the songs were excellent.  Todd Farrell pulled double duty, joining headliners Two Cow Garage on guitar.  It was the last night of a month long tour for the long running Ohio band, and they did not hold back – offering a full-frontal assault of their unique brand of rock and roll.

“Promised Land” by Tom Schreck

Nashville singer-songwriter, Tom Schreck leads off today’s shuffle with another track from his album Save Your Glory. 

“Out My Window” by Tiffany Huggins Grant

Another Nashville singer-songwriter, Tiffany Huggins Grant is up next with another song from her new album Jonquil Child which was released yesterday.

“Rock of Ages” by Grant Lee Buffalo

Grant Lee Buffalo covers Def Leppard… not really… from the album Mighty Joe Moon which I came across in a Goodwill bin, this “Rock of Ages” is an original and a really cool song.

“Call of the Wild” by Tom Tom Club

From Boom Boom Chi Boom Boom which has been in our playlist for several months.  After this, we just have one more from that album which we have not featured in a shuffle. In case you don’t know, Tom Tom Club is lead by the husband and wife rhythm section from Talking Heads (Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth).

“Alonely” by Bob Lewis

Last week, Bob Lewis (yet another Nashville singer-songwriter) opened up for Darrin Bradbury and Austin Lucas at The 5 Spot, and I was impressed enough to grab some of his music.  This is the first official E2TG listen.  The track in on his 2011 album, NOw here…  I could not find a video of Bob Lewis so here is “Alonely” via Bandcamp.

“The Warmth of the Sun” by The Beach Boys

The latest Feel Bad for You mixtape features “Summer” songs and includes this Beach Boys track which appeared on their 1964 album Shut Down Volume 2 and it was also the B-Side to the single, “Dance, Dance, Dance”.

“Exit a Hero” by The Vigilance Committee

The Vigilance Committee is a indie/punk band from Long Island. Exit the Hero is the title and final track of the band’s latest release – a concept album which details events in 1800s San Francisco.

“Baby I’m Doin’ It” by Eight O’Five Jive

Nashville’s Jump/Jive/Swing band, Eight O’Five Jive are back with another song from their fantastic recent album, Too Many Men. 

“Stuck on Repeat” by Hudson K

Hudson K are an electronic synth rock duo from Knoxville, TN.  This song is from their 2013 Ouroboros and the Black Dove.  We grabbed it off a Noisetrade Bonnaroo mixtape which I take to mean they will be performing in Manchester next month, so check them out if you are down on the farm…

“Cherry Licorice” by The Felice Brothers

Dig this track from The Felice Brothers’ 2014 album, Favorite Waitress.

“Red Rover” by Paper Aeroplanes

UK Dream Folk band, Paper Aeroplanes are up next with a track that first appeared on the EP Time to Be in 2012, and then was included on their 2013 album Little Letters.

“Dig It Up” by Tim Lee 3

A live version of a tune from the classic 2010 double album, Raucous Americanus by E2TG favorites Tim Lee 3 from Knoxville.  Check out all of their music including their latest album 33 1/3 at the usual places or visit their website.

“Surprise, Surprise” by The Rolling Stones

This was the final track on the Stones’ third American album, The Rolling Stones, Now! which was released in 1965. 

“Games People Play” (Joe South cover) by The Georgia Satellites

From In the Land of Salvation and Sin… this song is a cover of a 1968 song by the late Singer-Songwriter, Joe South, who also wrote the song, “Rose Garden” made famous by Lynn Anderson.

“Men w/ Tears” by Rich Robbins (prod. by Nate France)

Some  awesome Hip Hop music emanating from the suburbs of Chicago via the city of Philadelphia and currently settled on the campus of University of Wisconsin – Madison. Informed, honest, and innovative.

“Challenge of the Love Warriors” by Tom Tom Club

In celebration of the birthday of Chris Frantz founding member of both Tom Tom Club and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band, Talking Heads, we have this track written by Frantz from Tom Tom Club’s 1988 album, Boom Boom Chi Boom Boom. The track is breathy and sexy and (like all of Tom Tom Club’s music) incredibly fun.

We close out the day and the week with another really cool song, from one of the newest Ear to the Ground favorites.  The Ghoul Goes West are from Northwest Arkansas.  This song is from the awesome album, Ghosts and Bones and Blood and Things.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – No, All! Mix

Back in the shuffle business after an absolutely incredible weekend at the 2nd Annual Safety Harbor SongFest.  Expect more detailed and official reports once I have fully recovered, but for now, let me just say I had a blast at this well-organized, artistically uplifting event and enjoyed some gorgeous weather.  Despite my peeling nose and flight delay coming home, I can strongly recommend fans and musicians alike check out this still relatively new festival.

“Conquistador” by Love Tractor

 The instrumental rock band that was instrumental in the creating the vibrant Athens, Georgia music scene that spawned so many great bands.  This is from their 2014 comeback album Dear Aliens.

“No, All!” by Descendents

From the album All.  This follow up to the 1 second lead and title track expands on the theme stretching out to a full 2 seconds allows the band to really explore the overarching philosophy of “to not settle for some but to always go for All.”  Melodically simple (as I suppose a 2 second song is bound to be), the music nevertheless conveys a deep insight into the band’s influences from the punk and post punk era. The lyrics, “No, All!” while seeming self-explanatory bear repeated reading in order to fully comprehend the intricate nuances.  When Milo Aukerman left the Descendents, the remaining members formed a band named All which I got to see live sometime in 1991 or 1992.  It was a good show. 

“2013” by Mothers

From Panamanian Times.  Another cool track from the Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen band Mothers from their most recent album Panamanian Times.  Some good vibey punk rock and a nice palate cleanser from the spicy Descendents’ track.  Not so much fond of the year, but I love the song, “2013”.

“Cusp” by Forebear

Cinematic L.A. Progressive Folk band Forebear return to the shuffle with another track from their self-titled EP. 

“Killing What’s Left of Me” by Dead in 5

Dead in 5 bring some Detroit Hard Rock and outlaw attitude to the morning shuffle. It was a perfect bit of raw power to drive me forward toward work after a long and enjoyable weekend.  The album is called Schizophrenic Razor Project.  The graphics are awesome and the music delivers on the promise of the visual images…. CRACK!

“Trudy and Dave” by John Hiatt

From Slow Turning.  After the raw energy of Dead in 5, I really needed to come down a bit before I faced my workplace.  Who knows, I might have punched someone… not really, but I might have thought about it.  A great song from one of my all time favorite artists.

“Talking Thunderbird Blues”  by Townes Van Zandt

Taken from a 1973 live recording…  What a better way to get ready to solve the whole world’s problems (or at least my tiny corner of the world) then to listen to a song about drinking Thunderbird wine for the very first time…

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – R-E-A-C-T Mix

“There’s a splinter in your eye…”    Todays shuffle has it all (or it has a bunch of it, or at least some of it….):  Old and new friends of E2TG, heroes, legends! Crossing stylistic boundaries without any hesitation! Crossing decades of music like we have a freaking time machine!  This is what we do at Ear to the Ground!     Look, my viral infection is lingering, yesterday’s 60 degree high is in free-fall, it is a sucky rainy day that is supposed to give way to all kinds of frozen junk which this Southern city is ill equipped to handle, and so I am just trying to maintain the kind of enthusiasm this eclectic and fine mix of music deserves.  Sorry for any unnecessary hyperbole or manic-ness of the above introduction….

“Flicker and Flame” by The Ghoul Goes West

The second song in as many days from this band from Arkansas. When they e-mailed me, they said they were “an unknown, under listened to band” – which happens to be my stock and trade.  Plus their name is The Ghoul Goes West! Plus, the album is called Ghosts and Bones and Blood and Things!  But the kicker was they have a great sound and some really good songs. 

“Somethin’ Else” by Eddie Cochran

1959 – Eddie Cochran.  The b-side was titled “The Boll Weevil” song.  Did I mention it is Eddie Cochran?

“Cheshire” by American Scarecrows

By way of a Noisetrade sampler, American Scarecrows are from Minneapolis and this is one of my favorite songs off that release. The song is the second track on the band’s 2014 album Yesteryear.

“Shock the World” by Tom Tom Club

Another track from Boom Boom Chi Boom Boom.  Chris and Tina and company shock the world with their killer rhythms.

“Carryin’ on This Way” by Dale Watson

Before the lie… The Danbury Lie that is…  Some pre-history of one of Ear to the Ground’s favorite artists… in the form of some wicked alternative metal from the eponymously titled album.

“Palace” by The Antlers

Deftly, our shuffle transitions from the noisy metal of Burning Bridges to the smooth dream pop sounds of this Brooklyn-based band and the lead track from their most recent album Familiars.  

“Change the Tune” by Jason and the Scorchers

Similar in theme to the Dale Watson song.  Nashville’s Jason and the Scorchers are up next with a track from their album Lost and Found.

“Lassez-Moi Tranquille” by Warren Zevon

From My Ride’s Here… this is a cover of a Serge Gainsbourg song.

“Harborcoat” by R.E.M.

We close out today’s shuffle with opening track from R.E.M.’s second album Reckoning.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Paint the Daytime Black Mix

Another cool track from Batkhi Dahn. Coincidently, both Chris and Tina from Tom Tom Club and Batkhi Dahn are from Connecticut – along with some other cool folks I know.  Must be something in the water up there.  To avoid reposting the only Batkhi Dahn video I know about, I have reposted the newest video from Batkhi Dahn’s other project, The Foresters (who not coincidentally are also from Connecticut).

“Strictly Reserved for You” by Charles Bradley

Makes me want to create a rule that I must have at least one funk/soul song in a shuffle every week.  This comes off of the Hangout Music Festival Sampler I mentioned earlier this week, and it is also the lead track on Bradley’s 2013 album Victim of Love.

“If Anyone Can Save Me” by Ben Arthur

“The Bullet” (The Devil Makes Three cover) by The Blind Owl Band

E2TG favorites The Blind Owl band released a three song EP of cover songs toward the end of last year. This is the second we have featured.  A pretty cool cover of a The Devil Makes Three song.  Dig it!

I almost wrote “one of my favorite songs on Forbidden Places”, but I think I have written that at least a half dozen times about different songs on the album.  I could listen to Meat Puppets all day long.

“Since the Day I Was Born” by Sean Watkins

The opening track from Sean Watkins All I Do is Lie.  A tender sounding song.

“I Won’t Look Down” by Telepathic Teddy Bear

Another cool song from Forgiveness. I am so glad that Telepathic Teddy Bear makes such cool music, because I love writing Telepathic Teddy Bear…

“Goshen ’97” by Strand of Oaks

Another opening track, this time from Strand of Oaks latest album HEAL.  A song about growing up on Goshen, Indiana.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Just a Coward Mix

A frosty, cold morning here in Nashville.  I needed some tunes to heat things up, and as usual my shuffle mode did not let me down…. let’s get to the mix o’ the day

“I Confess” by Tom Tom Club

Nothing heats things up like good dance music, and Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth and company make some of the best.  This is another from Boom Boom Chi Boom Boom (1988).

“The War on the Terror and the Drugs” by Ike Reilly with Shooter Jennings

Somebody has to fight the war on the terror and the war on the drugs. You can take all the terror and Ike and Shooter will take all the drugs. Deal?

“Boys Can Never Tell” by J Roddy Walston and the Business

J Roddy Walston and the Business are based out of Richmond, VA, but the band formed in Cleveland, TN.  The song came to me via a Noisetrade sampler of artist scheduled to appear at this year’s Hangout Music Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama.  The video I found is J Roddy playing this song with Shovels and Ropes. “All Kindsa Girls” by The Real Kids

Proto-Punk from Boston.  John Felice was an early member of The Modern Lovers and left to form The Real Kids in 1972. Aggressive music based upon the roots of rock and roll music. This still sounds great 40+ years later. From the self-titled first album.

“This Will End in Tears” by Sean Watkins

Another great song from Sean Watkins’ All I Do is Lie album.

“The Old Revolution” by Leonard Cohen

Going way back to 1969 and Leonard Cohen’s second album, Songs from a Room. Sublimely wonderful song, sung by a golden throated still young singer.

“The Cardinal” by Julie Christensen Band

That sly shuffle function has done it again, Julie Christensen spent a decade or so singing back up for Leonard Cohen.  Before that, as part of the Divine Horsemen, she was an active part of an L.A. scene that helped to fuse the bond between Punk and what would become Alt-Country and Americana. Now, East Nashville is proud to claim her as our own, and she is stepping out with some great new songs (look for an album upcoming).  The Cardinal which is a stand out of her recent live shows comes off a demo with the incredible band she has assembled.  The accompanying video can serve as a preview of what you will see you come out to The Family Wash in East Nashville on Friday night.  Julie and her band go on at 9:30, and my friend Russell Thompson begins around 8:30.

“Lisa Anne” by Bill Lloyd

I don’t know how many times or ways I can say that Bill Lloyd is one of Nashville’s greatest musical assets.  Besides the incredible Pop songwriting demonstrated on Feeling the Elephant (and his other albums), he leads the incredible Long Players who recreate classic albums (often joined by some of the original players). He was also part of the Country music duo Foster and Lloyd (whose first two album are being rereleased by RCA soon). 

“Young Love” by Telepathic Teddy Bear

We close things out with a gorgeous song by Telepathic Teddy Bear from his album called Forgiveness.

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Talking inYour Sleep Mix

I had a technical glitch which prevented me from going back to review the songs in this morning’s shuffle, so I did the best I could from memory.  I realize that no one would know the difference, but I felt the need to be honest about that.  I think I came pretty close (possible some songs out of order)…

A lovely song from If You Look for My Heart with Rachel Yamagata.  By the way, the video is for a different song, but it is worth mentioning that the video was made by the multi-talented Matthew Hendershot of The End Men (who I may have mentioned once or twice on this blog).


“Wildfires” by Mariachi El Bronx

Mariachi El Bronx are not from The Bronx (in case that is what you are thinking), but they do play Mariachi music.  They also happen to have another band which is called The Bronx… They are from L.A. From their album, Mariachi El Bronx (III).

“Search” by Minutemen”

from The Punch Line and Post Mersh Vol I.  The Minutemen pretty much are my desert island band, but I’m glad I don’t really have to choose just one band.

Our second song of the week that was featured on the show Sons of Anarchy.  I was fortunate enough to catch John Moreland on the opening night of his Campfire songs tour with Caleb Caudle and Aaron Lee Tasjan.  If you have the chance to see this three incredible songwriters together, make it happen! It is on the album Earthbound Blues.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Oh My and a Boo Hoo Mix

I got those post-birthday hangover blues… hangover in the figurative sense (or is it literal???)

Anyway, some killer tunes in the shuffle – so let’s get to it.

“You Got Trouble” by Blackfoot Gypsies

A great way to start the morning commute.  Six minutes or so of Blackfoot Gypsies signature high-energy bluesy rock music.  This is from their album Dandee Cheeseball.

“Come Join the Murder” by The White Buffalo and The Forest Rangers

Did you know that a group of crows is called a “murder” because they will sometimes kill a dying cow?  I didn’t either, but I join writers of songs, poetry, and fiction in thanking whoever came up with the name for the inspiration.  I really love this song which was featured on the television series Sons of Anarchy.

“1969” by The Stooges

I was three years old in 1969 (a fact that either makes me seem really old or really young depending upon your point of view), so I will have to take Iggy’s word on what that year was like. I am not one to argue with Iggy.  Powerhouse, proto-punk from the self-titled debut album.

“Femme Fatale” (Velvet Underground cover) by Tom Tom Club

Femme Fatale is among my favorite Velvet Underground songs (there are a bunch on that list), and this is one of my favorite cover versions. From Boom Boom Chi Boom Boom.

“Free Again” by Alex Chilton (Big Star)

A few songs from the Big Star album Third/Sister Lovers made it onto the Alex Chilton compilation 19 Years.  The absence of Chris Bell made the album (to some) essentially an Alex Chilton solo album. Regardless of that debate, it is one of my favorite albums of all time and I love this song.

“Dracula, 1931” by Sci-Fi Romance

I think this is the second to the last song for us to feature from the remarkable October album by our friend Vance Kotrla (aka Sci-Fi Romance).  Once again, in case you missed the previous posts, shortly before Halloween, Mr. Kotrla sat down and watched a marathon of classic horror films (along with the film Ed Wood), and he then wrote and recorded some songs based upon each of the films.  Here, he transforms the classic 1931 film Dracula (directed by Tod Browning and starring the great Bela Lugosi) into a meditation on the consequences of immortality.

“The Queen of My Arms” by Matthew Ryan

We close things out with a Bonus track from Matthew Ryan’s album Boxers. A great way to end a most excellent shuffle.

Another great song from Boom Boom Chi Boom Boom.  This runs counter to the message I got handed in school via Nancy Reagan. Hmm, who should I listen to? Nancy Reagan or Chris and Tina? What do you think?

Magnolia Electric Co covering Warren Zevon is truly sublime. RIP Jason Molina and Warren Zevon. This is from a Daytrotter session in 2009.

This song came on as I began my solitary walk toward the office. A perfect somber song for this grey morning. From I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight. 

“Nobody’s Singin'” by Matt King

This is the penultimate song from our run-through of Matt King’s stripped down album Raw.  As we await new music from King and his new band, Killing Street.

“Conclusion of the Railway Earth” by Jack Kerouac with Al Cohn and Zoot Sims

We close out the shuffle with ten minutes of Kerouac spitting the beat poetry. The recording includes some studio banter before and after the poetry.  From Blues and Haikus.
