A rare snow day off work, but the shuffle must go on….

Had a blast last night before the winter weather descended… a night at The Family Wash for a pair of CD Release shows by two of my favorite East Nashvillians.  Amelia White and The Blue Souvenirs (tonight featuring Sergio Webb, Justin Amaral, Megan Palmer, and Ron Eoff). Amelia’s new album is called Home Sweet Hotel.  Stone Cupid (Julie Christensen, Sergio Webb, Chris Tench, Bones Hillman, and Steve Latanation). Stone Cupid’s new album is called The Cardinal.  Amelia and band were wonderful as always, and Julie and Stone Cupid rocked the house.

To the shuffle:

“You Left the Water Running” by Amy Black

Amy Black kicks off our Snow Day shuffle with a classic Muscle Shoals song from her Muscle Shoals Session album.  This song has been recorded by many people including Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett.  The song was written by Dan Penn, Rick Hall, and Oscar Franks.

“The World Belongs to You” by Indigenous Engines

Andrew Adkins has a new album out under his own name, and we will get to that very soon, but this is another track from one of two EPs he released in 2015 under the Indigenous Engines name.  This song is from the EP Werewolves.

“St. Sinner” by Exedra

Some newer music from our a E2TG favorite Jeremy Gluck.  Exedra features Gluck along with Darrall Knight and Mark Elliott.  The album is called Elemental, and the music is ethereal, dreampoppy, shoegazey, and all kinds of awesome.

“Sorry” by Youngstrr Joey

Our second listen to London based Youngstrr Joey from Grilled Wiig.  Really digging this music.

“Exotica” by Exedra

An instrumental tune from Elemental… takes me to a different place….

“Promise” by Leapfrogtown

Our second listen to London based Leapfrogtown from Dreaming in Public.  I like this band a bunch.

“Columbus Stockade Blues” by Richie Owens and the Farm Bureau

Richie Owens and the Farm Bureau are getting ready to release the follow up to Tennessee (from which this track comes) which will be called Dia de los Azules. If the first single (which was recently released) and the recent live shows are any indication that album is going to be a great one. This track is a civil war story about a Tennessee boy being held in a Union prison in Columbus, Georgia.

“Elevator” by Artur U and the New City Limits

This is, I think, our last track to feature from Holiday  From Eternity.  The “Earie” award winning Finnish band have promised some big plans for 2016.  “Elevator” is one of my favorite songs from the current album, and it has a pretty infectious groove to it.

“Backbone” by Zachariah Red

Hopefully you read my recent review of Backbone. If not, it is now up on No Depression so give it a read.  This is the title track from the album which is now available on iTunes if that is your preferred outlet.  The live video (for a different song)  features Zach along with some of favorite Nashville folks, Taylor Alexander, Drew Kohl, and Lindsay Ellyn.

“Ode to a Friend” by Jon Magnusson

And we close out the shuffle with a moving song from a singer-songwriter from Stockholm.  His 3 song EP is called Dina drommar (with umlauts over the o that I do not know how to type).  This is the only English song on the EP. It is a tribute to a childhood friend who died at age 15.  It is extremely moving to me because I lost a friend at close to the same age – 35 years ago this month.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Not Punk Mix

Be sure to “Like” Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

So… even by Nashville standards, the middle part of this week has been an embarrassment of musical riches. I already recapped Tuesday night.  Last night for me, began at The 5 Spot – the preeminent East Nashville dive bar for week one of Kevn Kinney’s July Residency.  Kinney in and of himself would have made the show noteworthy, but we was joined by Gibb Droll on guitar and E2TG favorite Shelly Colvin jumped in a couple of songs for background vocals, and Todd Snider was there to add some awesome harmonica to a couple of songs.  The last song of the show included all of the above covering The Replacements’ classic “Here Comes a Regular” which Kinney managed to morph into the refrain from Nirvana’s “All Apologies”.  It was a truly magical moment which would have been more than enough to make the night complete… and that was all before 8:00….

After that show ended, I hoofed it over to The Basement East in time to see Tiffany Huggins Grant perform a short solo set of songs from her brand new album (which I’m sure you already own since I’ve been telling you about it…right?)  Her incredible voice was in evidence.

By this point, rumors were circulating about the happenings back at The 5 Spot.  Thanks for Mark Robinson and Sue Havlish for the lift back over there.  It was the 2nd Anniversary of Jerry Pentecost’s Country and Western Wednesday – on the 2nd Wednesday of every month features classic Country and Western covers performed by an awesome house band with stellar guest stars.  For the anniversary show, they pulled out all the stops…  I’ll leave some awesome people off, but the guest included Derek Hoke, Cory Chisel, Elizabeth Cook, Amanda Shires, Bobby Bare Jr., Chance McCoy, Wayne Moss (of Barefoot Jerry), Jim Lauderdale, and incredibly the one and only Lucinda Williams.  The club was packed out, but I had a good time connecting with friends and experiencing the moments…

Needless to say (or maybe needed to be said), I think I’m going to stay in tonight and recover… but the shuffle goes on and we have a good one today…. so….

“Goin’ Down South” by R.L. Burnside

First up, the late Mississippi Bluesman with the title track from an album that was released in 1998 but which features recordings from a decade earlier.

“Not Punk” by Aaron Lee Tasjan

Next up, ALT speaks the truth in a spoken word track from his latest EP Telling Stories to the Wall.

“Me and You and Jackie Mittoo” by Superchunk

A World Café Session from the legendary North Carolina Indie Rock band with a track from their 2013 10th album, I Hate Music.

“You Can Call Me Al” by Paul Simon

Moving on… our penultimate track from our revisit of Paul Simon’s Graceland, and one of #E2TG Artist of the Year Darrin Bradbury’s favorite songs.

“I Can’t Stand Up for Falling Down” by Elvis Costello and the Attractions

The hits keep coming… as Elvis creates a short burst of pure pop heaven with a track from Get Happy!

“While I Was Gone” by Michael Sackler-Berner

One more from one of my newest favorites… from his Double EP collection… intelligent pop music for our time…

“Quarterback” by Kopecky

The Nashville band formerly known as Kopecky Family Band are up next with the first single from their latest album, Drug for the Modern Age which came out back in May.

“On a Holiday” by Artur U and the New City Limits

From Finland… Artur U and the New City Limits are high on my list of favorite artists I “discovered” this year.  Their latest album is Holiday from Eternity.  I really dig this song.

“Your Frown’s My Friend” by Greg Summerlin

My friend Too Much Country included this track on the current “Summer” themed Feel Bad for You mixtape – playing fast and loose with the theme, which can be forgiven because the song is so good.  Greg Summerlin is from Birmingham, Alabama (I think). This is taken from an album called The Young Meteors which came out a decade ago.

“Color of Her Eyes” by Gear Daddies

We close things out today with another reminder as to why I love Gear Daddies so much.  From Billy’s Live Bait.

After posting about the heat yesterday, things inexplicably cooled off a bit yesterday evening (don’t worry it is hot again today).  While it was cooler, I took the opportunity to sit out on my deck and get some writing projects complete.

1.  You may have seen The Ghoul Goes West in the shuffle over the past couple of months or so. And, you may have wondered just who is or are The Ghoul Goes West.  Well, wonder know more. I did an extensive interview this Chris S. (chief Ghoul) and you can read it on No Depression right now

2. Any time there is new music from an Ear to the Ground artist of the year, it is cause for much excitement around here.  Darrin Bradbury, the reigning Artist of the Year, just released a new EP called The Story of Bob, and I have written a review of that album (hint – you should own it now!)

Tonight, if you in Nashville, I highly recommend heading to the Basement East around 7:00.  Two of our country’s best songwriters are appearing together and it should be a great night.  Kevn Kinney (Drivin’ and Cryin’) and Peter Case in one night and the same stage.  Epic!

We have a short but pretty darn sweet shuffle today – thanks to a quick commute and an eight minute instrumental song in the mix.

“Shh.. Judy’s Sleeping” by Christopher Aaron Slade

Some amorous cheekiness from Christopher Aaron Slade.  From his bio, I take it that Judy was a day dreaming co-worker.  In the video playlist, we have his version of the Blondie classic, “Call Me”.

“Monkey House” by Artur U and the New City Limits

One of my favorite tracks from Turn Off the Light by this band from Finland.  The album was produced at Bill Laswell’s studio in New Jersey.  Enjoy the short film video of the song.

“Little Blue Something” by Bryce Dessner and Kronos Quartet

Kronos Quartet are a contemporary classical string quartet who have been in existence for over 40 years.  Bryce Dessner is a composer best known as the guitarist for The National.  Little Blue Something is a composition by Dessner which was inspired by the music of  Irena and Vojtech Havel, who blend early music with Czech folk music.  The song came to me via a Noisetrade sampler for the Big Ears music festival held in Knoxville, Tennessee earlier this year.

“Broken Into Better Shape” by Good Old War

A live version of the title track to Good Old War’s new album which is due out next week.  From a Noisetrade sampler put out by the band.

“Undertow” by Cletus Kennelly and Lori Kelley

Another of my favorite songs from the Lotus album by the long-time D.C. area duo.

“Guess So – Take Me Home” by Tigerman WOAH!

Another raucous and rowdy song from the band from Massachusetts by way of Georgia (or vice-versa). From the band’s album, Up South Vol. II.

“Shadow” by SOJA     window.amznpubstudioTag = “eartothegro00-20”;

An awesome song from the band’s 2014 album Amid the Noise and Haste.  This track features guitarist Trevor Young on lead vocals. The Roots and Reggae band is from Arlington, Virginia.

Another week…  last night, I experienced another amazing night of music on the east side of Music City.  Allen Thompson and Darrin Bradbury opened up for the legendary Don Schlitz at the East Nashville Songwriter’s Club.

Tonight, Darrin and Erin Rae will be joining Kelsey Waldon for week two of her residency at the new Basement East  (The Beast).

“Bent Up Halo” by Broken Guru

The title track from the debut CD from NYC Alt-Rock band Broken Guru!

“The Secret” by Artur U and the New City Limits

More great music from the Turn Off the Lights EP from Artur U and the New City Limits who hail from the capital city of Finland.

“Broken-Hearted Man” by Carl Anderson

A starkly powerful song from the recent album, Risk of Loss.  Highly recommended by #E2TG.

“Cooldown” by Burning Bridges

I don’t always listen to Metal, but when I do, it is often this early band from Ear to the Ground favorite The Danbury Lie….

“Beneath the Brine” by The Family Crest

A pretty cool track from the San Francisco Baroque Pop band, The Family Crest. This was the title track from their 2014 album.

“Afterparty” by Burning Bridges

How about that? A second appearance by Burning Bridges.  I dig this song a bunch.  Be sure to check out not just this band, but all of the great music by the enigmatically proficient (or is that proficiently enigmatic) The Danbury Lie.

“Foot of Pride” (Bob Dylan Cover) by Lou Reed

A major reason for their only being eight tracks in today’s shuffle.  An eight plus minute cover of this outtake from Bob Dylan’s Infidels album as performed by the late, great Lou Reed.  This from a 30th Anniversary Dylan tribute concert. Per the You Tube comments, Reed is backed by Booker T and the MGs, but I am sure my Dylan expert readers will correct me if I got any of that information wrong.  So don’t quote me until they’ve had a chance to fact check me.

“Trying to Get to Memphis” by Kevin Gordon

We close things out with a track from Kevin Gordon’s Gloryland album.  If you will be in Nashville for any of the next couple of Thursdays, Gordon has a residency at The 5 Spot, which I can very highly recommend.

Be sure to “Like” Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Made it to mid-week.  I am seriously thinking about finally producing Volume 2 of Ear to the Ground Presents… details coming soon…

Shuffle!

“East of West” by The End Men

The End Men from Brooklyn were the 2013 Ear to the Ground Band of the Year, and they remain the most mentioned artist in the history of the blog.  The just released their latest album, Terms and Conditions, and unfathomably they have managed to top themselves again.  Augmented the sax work of Matthew Elia, the band digs deeper into the rough hewn, dirty blues which first caught my attention, while also expanding their sound into exciting and interesting new directions.  I got to listen to the whole album last night, and I was blown away.  Meanwhile, this song from that album showed up first on the shuffle this morning.  Visit their website for all the fine print.

“Song for Buck Owens” by David Dondero

You don’t know how glad I am that Darrin Bradbury turned me on to the music of David Dondero.  How exactly had I not known about this before now?  How did you? Now, you know.  Go check it out.  I love this song for the one and only Buck Owens.

“Running for Cover” by Ivan and Alyosha

At the risk of ruining my reputation of being well read, when I first heard about Ivan and Alyosha, I thought they were a male (Ivan) and female (Alyosha) duo. (The name comes from The Brothers Karamazov – Ivan and Alyosha are the two youngest brothers) which I owned but never worked up the courage to read.   The band is from Seattle and they make music that is far less intimidating than a Russian novel, but pretty awesome nonetheless.

“Ride” by Cletus Kennelly and Lori Kelley

In another happy shuffle coincidence, today is Lori Kelley’s birthday, so Happy Birthday Lori!   Lori is a bright light in the Nashville songwriting scene, and I am happy to be able to hear some of the music she made before she moved here.

“Just One of the Guys” by Jenny Lewis

Man I dig this song from her 2014 album, The Voyager which was primarily produced by Ryan Adams..  If you don’t know, Jenny was in the Indie band Rilo Kiley.

“Another Day” by Artur U and the New City Limits

The album is Holiday From Eternity and it was released about a month ago.  This is the lead track from that album.  Artur U and the New City Limits are from Finland, and I dig their music a bunch.  I almost made a passing comment about the abundance of great music from Scandinavia, but then I went on Wikipedia and discovered a way too complicated discussion of what countries do and do not comprise Scandinavia. So, I will suffice it to say that their is a bunch of great music coming from the European continent.

“Lesson Number One” by Marshall Crenshaw

The final track from Crenshaw’s 1985 album Downtown.  If I ran the world, Marshall Crenshaw would be one of the best selling and most famous musicians of all time.  Of course, I would likely make a bunch of stupid decisions as well.

“Expositor” by The Vigilance Committee

Another great song from this Long Island Indie band. Exit a Hero is their new album which is scheduled to drop in three days.  Check it out!

“Chains off Me” by The Delta Routine

This is the lead track from this Milwaukee Rock band’s albym You and Your Lion which was released back in February.

We close out the shuffle with a straight ahead Rock and Roll song from this Jersey Shore supergroup which includes among its members, bassist Kenny Aaronson who has played with just about every one. Their new album is eponymously titled and is out now!

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Sunburn at Night Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);

Be sure to “Like” Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

It is Tuesday.  A bit tired today after a night of great music. The Nashville Conundrum was in full effect, but one thing I didn’t say yesterday, is that I’ve learned that it is okay to feel bad for the shows you missed – especially when it means missing the show of a friend, but in the end, when you’ve made your choice, you should expend more energy appreciating the show you did see than you do regretting the show(s) you missed.  Life is kind of like that, too, I think.

“Walter Mitty” by Cletus Kennelly and Lori Kelley

Cletus and Lori were a popular duo in the Greater Washington D.C. area over the last decade.  In 2014, Lori Kelley decided to move to Nashville to pursue a solo career, and I have been fortunate enough to hear some of her great music.  Recently Cletus Kennelly came through Nashville, and I had the rare treat of seeing them perform together.  I also got hold of their 2005 album Lotus, and I have been digging it tons.  “Walter Mitty” is a track from that album.  In the video playlist, we have the duo’s cover of “America” by another duo – Simon and Garfunkel.

“When a Car Becomes a House” by Darrin Bradbury

The title track from Darrin Bradbury’s most recent collection of demos. This song is about the time that he lived out of his car.  Stay tuned for news of his new record. I have had the pleasure of hearing the final mixes, and it is going to be amazing.

“Back Inside the Shell” by Artur U and the New City Limits

Relatively new #E2TG favorites, Artur U and the New City Limits are from Finland, and this song is from their relatively new album, Holiday from Eternity.  This is some innovative music with elements of Rock, Pop, and Alternative.

“Hymn” by Tom Schreck

A gorgeous song from Schreck’s incredible album Save Your Glory.  He calls himself the Nashville Outsider, but dammit Nashville! Let him in!

“Maggots and Flies” by Dead in 5

Sometimes, I wonder if my quest for diversity in the music I feature serves to bring a diverse audience or to drive people away.  It doesn’t really matter, I guess.  I am what I am, and Ear to the Ground is what it is.  There is no logical way to explain following up a gorgeous song like “Hymn” with a song called “Maggots and Flies” – except to say that it is a great big weird wild world, and I have a variety of interests and who is to say that the world always makes sense, and so why should my shuffles always make sense… Dead in 5 are from Detroit, and they rock… hard.  Check them out, if you dare.

“Black Pony” by The Wans

The Wans are a hard rocking, Nashville garage band who I have been hearing about.  This song is from the Noisetrade SXSW mixtape, and it was featured in a commercial for BMW – as all good aggressive, garage rocks songs should be.

“Dance With Me” by The Danbury Lie

I have two The Danbury Lie albums in my current playlist.  This is from Scattered Moments of Connection – the oldest of two albums (by about two months).  Fun fact:  two of the artists in today’s shuffle first came to my attention directly as a result of my writing about Don Ryan back in late 2012 or so.  Today is Don’s birthday, so it seems appropriate to have music from The Danbury Lie and Darrin Bradbury in the shuffle.

“A Farm Named Froo” by John Hamilton

This is the theme song to the 1970s film Come On Children which I mentioned the other day.  The song composed by John Hamilton, one of the young “stars” of the film introduces the cast.  The film is an interesting view into a particular moment in time and a particular group of young people.  As I said before, it’s kind of a representation of what “reality” television could be in some alternate reality (early 1970s Canada) where a group of teens could be transported to a farm (name Froo) and left to their own devices and vices with just a camera crew to document.  Short of major drama, the film nonetheless is fascinating to watch.  It’s available through the Criterion Collection.

“Born in the U.S.A.” by Amanda Shires and Jason Isbell

If anyone was still confused about the meaning of Bruce Springsteen’s song (how many times have you heard it played at a 4th of July celebration). This devastatingly beautiful version by Amanda Shires and Jason Isbell leaves very little room for misinterpretation.  From the Dead Man’s Town – Springsteen Tribute record.

“Keep Yourself Alive” by Queen

The first single off the very first Queen album.  Because sometimes you need a little 70s arena rock in your life.

“The Ballad of Ira Hayes” by Townes Van Zandt

Van Zandt’s cover of a folk classic written by Peter La Farge.  The song has been covered by among others: Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Kinky Friedman, and Pete Seeger.

“Ghost of the Road” by Guadalcanal Diary

We close out today’s shuffle with a song from the album, Walking in the Shadow of the Big Man, by Georgia band, Guadalcanal Diary.

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Stand in Line to Die Mix

Greetings… I am in a much better place than yesterday.  Still a little rushed, but I can get through this shuffle…

First up my recap of CXCW15 Day 5:  I am way behind on my couchin’, but there was an awesome Irish showcase that featured the legendary Glen Hansard.  Plus videos from my friend Eli Rhodes who plays with Todd Farrell and the Dirty Birds  and also writes some amazing songs of his own.  Look for a solo record soon.  #E2TG favorites Tim Lee 3 return to the couch with another great video, and the closing video of the day came from Nashville’s own Will Kimbrough playing a song he wrote with Sam Baylor from Will’s legendary band Will and the Bushmen.  Sam passed away this week.  Life is short, ya’ll…

“This Ol’ World” by Young America

The dudes from Young America are currently divided between their native Georgia and Nashville, and still working toward the release of their highly anticipated album Good Old Fashioned Pain.  They recently released a 3 song EP preview/teaser of songs from the album.  This song is on that release.  The EP is called Pain, Rain, and the Mundane, and if you Spotify well you can now Spotify the EP over there.

“Feed Them Monkeys” by Eight O’Five Jive

Nothing says Friday like a good old fashioned jump blues/jive song… from the album Too Many Men…

“Mechanical Dream” by Artur U and the New City Limits

Another song from the album Holiday from Eternity.  The band is from Helsinki, Finland.  They have a pretty diverse sound which I like, and this song compared to the most recent song we featured, really shows off that diversity.

“Hard Times” by Syd Straw

Another from Surprise.  This one features a band that includes Ry Cooder and Jim Keltner, plus guest vocals by the incomparable John Doe (X, The Knitters, Flesheaters).  The song is a Stephen Foster composition.

“Queen’s Tattoos” by Aztec Camera

Originally the b-side of the Pillar to Post 7″, this song was added as a bonus track to the 1991 CD Reissue of High Land, Hard Rain.  Aztec Camera were one of my favorite bands, and I still dig listening to their music.

“Chromatic Death” by Stormtroopers of Death

A :45 second track from the album Speak English or Die (1985). s.o.d. was a hardcore punk/thrash metal side project started by Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian.  Yes, I’m awake and yes, my sinuses are clear now…

“Hand in Hand” by The Danbury Lie

The Danbury Lie right on the heels of their January release Scattered Moments of Connection, released a brand new album called Chose Your Delusion on the Ides of March (March 15 for those who don’t know their Julius Caesar).  This is our first listen to that new album, and I have to say, I like what I hear so far.  Good reminder about why The Danbury Lie are one of my favorites.

“Give Me a Reason” by Whiskey Shivers

From their self-titled album… The Whiskey shivers made big loud traditional founding folk n’ roll music…

“Ride Ride Ride” by Michael Sackler-Berner

A couple or so month ago, I randomly came across this artist’s music.  I was impressed that he had worked with Marshall Crenshaw, and then I heard his music, and I was really impressed. His two new EPs have been bundled up as Double EP, and the bundle can be had at Noisetrade.com

“Jolene” by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes

The legendary punk rock cover band plays the Dolly Parton classic from their 2006 album Love Their Country.  Coincidently, I recently watched the Nashville-theme episode of Drunk History in which this song plays a vital role…

“The Imposter” by Elvis Costello and the Attractions

Elvis.  Get Happy!! It’s Friday, y’all…

“Fried My Little Brains” by The Kills

From the 2003 debut album, Keep on Your Mean Side…  It has been over four years since we have seen a new studio album from this Indie band….

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Swallowing the Ocean Mix

#CXCW15 rolls on… Day 3 brought tons more videos including some of E2TG’s all-time favorites… Among the many great clips were some from old friends like Sci-Fi Romance, MAKAR, and Imperial Rooster.  Plus an explosive clip from relatively new friends Two Mule Blues.  Head to the couch and visit couchbycouchwest.com  to get in on the fun.  By the way, they are still accepting submissions so get to videoing and get it done!

“Lost and Found” by The Naddiks

From my inbox via Australia (or vice-versa) come The Naddiks with a track from their latest release, a mini album called 21CB.  I haven’t had a lot of time to dig into the full release yet, but I dig this track. So good high energy punk, pop, and roll!

“(I Have) Everything I Need” by Beat Rodeo

Some time in the 80s, a bunch of punk rockers discovered or rediscovered country and/or roots music.  A lot of the music that came out of that influenced not only my budding musical tastes, but also played a large part in the development of what is called Alt-Country, Americana, and one of several other names.  Living in a kind of small town in the days before the internet, I was a child of MTV and college radio. I first came across Beat Rodeo on an episode of IRS Records Presents: The Cutting Edge.  Steve Almaas had previously been in the Minneapolis punk band Suicide Commandos.  He then worked with The Bongos and shortly after that worked with lead Bongo Richard Barone and producer Mitch Easter on a solo EP called Beat Rodeo before forming a band of the same name.  Home in the Heart of the Beat was their second album.

(me holding the Steve Almaas solo EP Beat Rodeo on vinyl)

“Friends” by Whiskey Shivers

Whiskey Shivers are from Austin and from their Facebook Page they seem to be staying busying down there with whatever is going on this week.  They will be in my hometown come September for the Muddy Roots Festival.  This great song is from their self-titled third album which is available currently on Noisetrade (as a free download (tips and shares encouraged)…

“Standing on the Moon” by Lera Lynn

Lera Lynn is a Nashville singer/songwriter.  I got turned on to her music when my New York friend Ben Arthur co-wrote a song with her on a drive from Nashville to Memphis for the Premier episode of Songcraft Presents: Songs from the Road which was hosted by Rob Reinhart from Acoustic Café and videographed by Matthew Hendershot of The End Men and Matt King’s Killing Streets.  This song is from Lera Lynn’s most recent album called The Avenues.

“7 Chinese Bros.” by R.E.M.

A favorite track of mine from Reckoning (but aren’t they all..).  If you haven’t check out Voice of Harold on Dead Letter Office and then try to listen to the opening of this song without expecting to hear Michael Stipe reading the liners notes of a gospel recording called The Joy of Knowing Jesus…

“Richland Woman” by Megan Palmer

East Nashville’s own Megan Palmer from her 2007 album Take You Away.  I dig this song.   I always love when I get to hear Megan play whether it is her own stuff or with Tim Easton or even one of her rare performances with E2TG Artist of the Year Darrin Bradbury…

(Megan Palmer with Darrin Bradbury at Foobar 3/15/2015)

“Twin Hometowns” by Beat Rodeo

A second and more rocking track from Home in the Heart of the Beat….

“Last Man Standing” by Bark

I remember a Facebook post when Susan Bauer Lee said she was taking Drum lessons.  Next thing I know, her and husband Tim Lee of Tim Lee 3 are forming a side project duo called Bark and releasing an EP under that name (along with a full-length TL3 album).   This is from the Bark EP and it rocks.

“Wind” by Artur U and the New City Limits

From Finland and off their debut EP, Turn Off the Light which was recorded at Bill Laswell’s studio in New Jersey.  I’ve been digging on this album since I got hold of it.

Off work today –  I thought I would semi-live blog today’s shuffle….

Numerologists will note that before today’s shuffle, my active playlist stands at six hundred sixty six.  Make of that what you will, but beside any other connotations, the playlist is a large as it has ever been, and I hope it generates an interesting mix of music.  I don’t know if it will, but I have high hopes because I know the songs that make up the playlist.  I just don’t yet know the order they will come out… so without further ado…  let’s get ready to shuffle…

Song # 1 – “If Money Talks” by Jason and the Scorchers

From Lost and Found – 1985.  If money did the talking, I’d be all ears…

Song # 2 – “Heartbeat” by Kopecky Family Band

Another Nashville band… this one is from Kids Raising Kids – 2012.  They are now known as just Kopecky if you are keeping score at home.  Groovy indie pop music…

Song # 3 – “Ain’t That Easy” by D’Angelo and the Vanguard

From Black Messiah – 2014 – Taking things down a soulful path… from one of the best records of the year (even if it was released at the tail end of last year… what’s a calendar anyway?

Song # 4 – “Johnny Commando” by The Satisfactors

From the self titled debut – 2015 of this New Jersey supergroup comes this tribute to Johnny Ramone.  A very fitting tribute…

Song # 5 – “Heroin Vietnam” by A Color Engine

Yesterday, we had some early music from an E2TG favorite in the form of Burning Bridges some early music by the enigmatic genius behind The Danbury Lie.  So, in that vein, we have some early music from another E2TG favorite and coincidentally? a friend of said enigmatic genius – Don Ryan.  The album is called Voyage Underwater; 56 Knots and it was made in 2007 or so.  You can read about the album and project here. This track is a mere 38 seconds, so I actually had to pause the shuffle to get this posted.  So let us continue…

Song # 6 – “Public Void” by Mothers

From Panamanian Times – 2014… some punky, jazzy vibes from this Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen band…  looking for new music from them soon…

Song # 7 – “No Need to Wave” by Artur U and the New City Limits

From Holiday From Eternity – 2015…  This alternative band is from Helsinki, Finland.  They just released their debut album.  Oddly enough, they already have a connection of sorts to Ear to the Ground – as their steel guitar player has played with Bill Laswell and James Chance both of whom are connected to my New York True Groove friends Marla Mase and Tomas Doncker.

Song #8 – “Blood” by Jeremy Gluck and Robert Coyne

Another great song from Memory Deluxe – I Knew Buffalo Bill 2 – 2014…

Song #9 – “Get Up, Get Up” by Tim Lee 3

After some global travels, the shuffle brings us back to Tennessee with my friends from Knoxville off their album  Live From Armory Sound: Boston – 2015.  The song was first released on Tim Lee’s solo album Concrete Dog – 2004.

Song #10 – “Driva Man” by Alabama Shakes

From the Soundtrack to the film 12 Years a Slave – 2013.  A cover of a Max Roach song.  Alabama Shakes follow up to their break through debut Boys and Girls is due out in April, and they recently delivered a highly praised performance on SNL.

More than likely, I’ll be back with a regular shuffle tomorrow, but I hope you enjoyed this “Live” blogging experiment as much as I did… although in retrospect it probably reads much like other shuffles.. oh well, I had fun…..
