Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Random Bits of Floating Dust Mix

Much to cover – The line-up for Bonnaroo 2012 and is always impressive.  Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beach Boys, The Civil Wars, The Avett Brothers, Bon Iver, The Roots, Foster the People, Delta Spirit, Alice Cooper, Dawes, Bad Brains, St. Vincent, Laura Marling, Ben Fold Five, Mogwai, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., Kurt Vile and many many more. You can see all the goodies here.   I should start a fund to solicit funds for me to attend.

A new Johnny Cash museum was announced yesterday to open in Downtown Nashville this summer. 

To the list:  Today we have an especially sweet mix of music – including a Minneapolis based Stompin’ Blues band, an obscure British singer-songwriter, a Nashville based Beats master, and a legendary singer covering a classic song.  Let’s get to it.

First – The band is called The 4ontheFloor. The song is called Workin’ Man Zombie and man oh man it rocks big time. It’s from the album 4×4 which has 16 tracks – get it?

Next – In a just world this next artist would be really famous and win lots of awards and stuff.  She is a singer-songwriter who comes from the U.K. The song today is called Set Fire to the Rain from the album 21 by Adele.  Remember that name, I predict big things from her.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – ♥ Mix

“You’d think that people would have had enough of silly love songs.”

It’s Valentine’s Day.  So whether you’re feeling the love or whether you fall of the J. Geils Band’s side of things: “I’ve been through diamonds/I’ve been through minks/I’ve been through it all/Love stinks”

Here at Ear to the Ground we have you covered.  Honestly, I don’t know if any of the songs on today’s list qualifies as a love song, but I guess it’s all in the eye of the beholder.  I love all these songs.

First up is some Brazilian Post-Rock goodies from former Band of the Week From the Outside.  The Prosecutor another track off the new Sound of Motion album offers crunching guitar and what I assume is “found”dialogue and ends with some electronic sounds.

Next we shift gears (and probably strip a few in the process). We have the opening number from the 1986 London Cast recording of Cabaret. Wilkommen takes us into the Kit Kat Klub in Berlin in 1931.

Next up is the late great Etta James doing The Rock and you can’t help but feel the pain.

Finally, a track by a great band from Saratoga Springs, New York, Skeletons in the Piano.  The song is called The Price Put on You Here is the video:

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Payback Mix

Yesterday, I  stopped by someone who had stopped me on the street last week asking for a dollar for the bus. I thought they were going to hit me up again, and I was thinking about the fact that I wasn’t carrying any money, but instead he reached in his pocket and gave me a dollar back.

Some days it rains, but inside I am feeling all sunny.  Some days, the opposite is true.  I like the former, better than the latter. Today is one of those former days, and I’m happy.  One thing I’ve noticed, I love dark music and the blues whether I am happy or not. I’m not sure why.  Maybe, when I down and dark and blue, that music reminds me that I’m not alone in feeling that way, and when I’m  up and light and joyful, the music grounds me and reminds me that everything is temporary.

The music shuffle includes songs I’ve added over the past three or so weeks since the elevator incident.

When Etta James died earlier this month, she left an enduring legacy of great music. At Last, was written in 1941 for a film called Orchestra Wives and recorded by Glenn Miller and his Orchestra. Nearly 20 years, later Ms. James recorded her definitive version of the song on the album of the same name off of the Chess label.

Next up – The Disappointment are yet another kick ass band from Brooklyn – h/t to The End Men for pointing us in the direction of this great band. Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Pardon Me, Sir Mix

Sorry for there not being a music shuffle yesterday, but I was incarcerated indisposed or something like that,  but I’m back at it – albeit later than usual – today.

Rainy morning.  Once again, dealing with my play lists  being unavailable, but one cover did come up today.

I just finished watching “The Runaways” movie, and went digging around and came up with this gem or a cover.  Joan Jett covers The Minutemen er I mean Creedence Clearwater Revival’s song Have You Ever Seen the Rain? from her Hit List album which also features a Door’s Cover and a cover of The Sex Pistol’s Pretty Vacant.

Next up is the late, great Etta James’ classic song – At Last. Got me thinking about the parallels in the life of these two amazing women of  music.

Next we have The Avett Brothers with a song from the Four Thieves Gone called Left On Laura, Left on Lisa  which echoes the sentiment of the Nick Lowe song, All Men Are Liars.

And finally, come on you knew we couldn’t let another day go by with another track from Band of Week alum’s MAKAR’s album Funeral Genius – So Slow is that song.

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Cool Operator Mix

How is it, in life, that you can feel on top of the world one minute and as low as low can be, the next?  How is it, in life, that you can’t avoid meeting assholes? How is it, in life, that we keep going when all signs point to giving up?  How is it, in life, that we forget that we are all in this thing together?

Urg… just some negativity but hey, it’s Friday and lots of wonderful things are happening.  Got a tweet back form a founding member of the Manhattan Transfer yesterday, I’m meeting new and wonderfully talented bands almost every day, and just in today’s music shuffle and nice fortuitous coincidental timing…

The Clash were for a time the greatest band in the world.  London Calling was and remains one of the best albums of all time (imho).  Their self-titled album is another great one.  I’ll admit, I’ve loved the energy and sound of the album well before I really understood what any of the songs were about.

This morning’s shuffle begins with White Man in Hammersmith Palais  and it’s a great example of the reggae/punk sound the band perfected.

Just one other song on today’s music shuffle. And this is where the fortuitous timing comes into play.

On his solo debut, Mike Watt (Minutemen, fIREHOSE) brought in a who’s who of alt-rock and laid down some truly awesome stuff.  The second to the last song of the album (Ball-Hog or Tugboat?) is a cover of a Funkadelic song called Maggot Brain. This version features some killer bass work, a Watt spiel and J Macias doing a virtuoso take on Eddie Hazel’s guitar solo and it also features Bernie Worrell reprising his keyboard work from the original.

And then….  came this news that Watt is going to play with Bernie Worrell Orchestra and perform Maggot Brain and Super Stupid.
