Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Is That All? Mix

Did you watch the Grammy Awards last night?  What’d you think?

Highlights for me:  Jack White, Mavis Staples and others in the Levon Helm tribute, Justin Timberlake and the Tennessee Boys, Bruno Mars and Sting but mostly when Damian and Ziggy Marley came on stage, The Lumineers and the Dave Brubeck tribute.  Overall, I was surprisingly pleased which much of the show.  I mean, you have to accept it for what it is, but compared to past shows I’ve endured, I thought there was a abundance of real musicians on the stage.  And, the audience seemed to be supporting all the music.  And Prince, just by his royal presence and his off-the-cuff statement that he loved the Goyte song which won for Record of the Year.  Not the mention, the utter star-struckedness of Goyte and Kimbra. 





  So, while it’s easy to sit here and complain about all the bands and artists who deserved to be on that stage or at least nominated… At least the Grammy’s seem to be trying… right?  Or do you disagree? I’d love to hear what you have to say.

1.  No Way Out by In Pursuit from City Without  Subway (1986)

Jay Joyce is now a successful producer who has worked with Cage the Elephant among others.  In the later part of the 80s. In Pursuit appeared to be on the verge of breaking out big time.  They got a slot opening some dates for aHa (you know the Take on Me band).  This track is reminiscent of their gorgeous sound.

  
  2. Promises by Nitzer Ebb from Industrial Complex (2010)

This was the sixth studio album by British EBM legends, released 15 years after their fifth album.  

3. Missing Pieces by Jack White from Blunderbuss (2012)

As mentioned, his set was a highlight of the night.

4. Tales from the Sad Hotel by Jim Lauderdale from Another Bloomin’ Sampler (2004)
A great song from the legendary Jim Lauderdale

6. Broken by Cherryholmes from Cherryholmes III Don’t Believe (2008)

 Bluegrass band on Ricky Skaggs’ label.

7. Desespero by Staccato du Mal from Sin Destino (2011)

 A vintage electronics project from Miami Beach. 

8. Is That All? by U2 from October (1981)
Another classic track from the Irish band’s 2nd album.

9. Set on Fire by Magnolia Mountain from Town and Country (2012)
from the 3rd album by this Cincinnati Americana band.

10.Falling Deeper from Makaras Pen from Makaras Pen (2010)
A Buffalo, NY based Indie/Shoegaze band.

 11. Glass by FallsStart from Our Summer (2012)

A great track from a former featured band – FallsStart hail from all over the place and play some awesome hard alternative rock.

Featured Friday Music Shuffle – Dog Days Mix

Here we are at the last Featured Friday Music Shuffle for July.  Next Friday, we will be shuffling up a whole new crop of Featured Artists. 

Another opportunity to remind you to vote for your favorite Featured Artist to be Band of the Month for July.  The poll is on the left sidebar near the top.  One vote per computer or something like that.  Vote now!  Polls will close next Tuesday around midnight.


First up this morning is actually one of our Featured Artists for June. Toward the end of the polling period for Band of the Month, I realized that I had inadvertently left Dean Fields off of the poll. So, I have added him to the poll for July.  This morning I decided to add one of his songs to the final featured Friday shuffle.  Forever Never Knowing  is an infectious indie pop song from his outstanding Under a Searchlight Moon EP.



Next up we have FallsStart with their catchy, hard rocking song, Happy Song. The song is featured on the band’s forthcoming EP Our Summer. Which is due out August 10.




Next up we have a band from Burlington, VT doing a cover of a piece written by the guy who used a slingshot to defeat a mighty giant.  From their whimsical set, Lawrence Welks Does God: Psalms we have 11. In the hands of LW&OB2X, David’s Psalm is set to a disco beat caustic, pleading vocals. HALLELUJAH!






And finally, we have a track from Wolf and Cub with the a song from their double A-side Shut Me Out/Got Nothing Coming 7″ with Got Nothing Coming.

First up, Justin and the Salty Dogs get their Jimmy Webb/Hank Williams mojo going with the track that first captured my attention to these guys. Postman Blues

And finally, Happy Song was originally featured on Ear to the Ground as the Mystery Song of the Day when my phone failed to read the Artist Name tag and google turned out to be frugal.  Upon getting home, I figured out that Happy Song is by a band called FallsStart who are now a featured artist and up for Band of the Month…. whew! It is on the band’s forthcoming 6 song EP  Our Summer due out August 10.

Did you know….

…that I do not have any formal training in music blogging?  Unlike like all those other Music bloggers you see on the web, I never went to school to become a music blogger… Interesting isn’t it?

…that I still get excited when a musician likes my posts or friends me or retweets? I’m still pretty star-struck sometimes, and that includes you – cause, you’re a star in my book!

…that featured artist The Shake have broken up… best to them for what comes next.’

…that featured artist Vinyl Thief played the Summer Kick-off for Nashville’s best shake and soda food truck – Moovers and Shakers. Cool on so many levels!

…that featured artist Wolf and Cub have two drummers, have been around for about ten years, and are on 4AD Records?  Now you do.

…that featured artist FallsStart posted a new song to their ReverbNation account?  And lo and behold, it is Happy Song which was our first and so far only Ear to the Ground Mystery Song of the Day!

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Strange Days Indeed Mix

We got five songs, and  a mea culpa – so let’s get to it.

Rise to the Sun is a track on the Boys & Girls album by one of the most buzz-worthy bands around, The Alabama Shakes.  If you’ve been hearing the buzz (or even if you haven’t) and haven’t gotten around to checking out this band – do so now.

 
Well, I loved yesterday’s track by Those Darlins so much, I had to grab another. Be Your Bro is also on the Screws Get Loose album. Gender-blurring and fun.
 
We go deeper into the fantastic Young Man in America  album by Anais Mitchell. Venus is our track today.
 
Stuck in RED  is by a band we just heard from this week called Larisa & the Raindoggs who hail from Austin, Texas – and play some mean rhythm and soul music.  Self-described as a shot of Tom Waits and a twist of Snoop.  The song is on their album One Armed Bandits which came out in January.

And finally we come to my mea culpa.  This was bound to happen sooner or later, and frankly, I’m surprised it is just now happening.  I add music to my MP3 player from a variety of sources, and although I am very thoughtful and deliberate about what I add, some files do not convert on my MP3 player with the album and/or artist information. Usually, when this happens, I can backtrack and figure out who it is and where I got it.  However, today, I have a track called Happy Song with no album name or artist name listed on my MP3 player.  I spent way too much time trying to track down this song through some of my usual sources, but alas, I have come up empty.  It’s a really cool song – up tempo indie rock. If it’s your song or you know who did the song, please let me know.  Otherwise, I will look at the original file when I get home and post an update. 


UPDATE:  Mystery solved.  Happy Song is by FallsStart at band who are from Honolulu, HI.
They have an album called Our Summer which is due out in August.  Here’s a video for you:
