Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Ring True Mix

Music from the morning….

Drivin’ N Cryin’ frontman Kevn Kinney released his classic solo debut, MacDougle Blues back in 1990.  It features Kinney’s trademark raspy vocals on top of plaintive, folksy music. Gotta Get Out of Here is the first song in today’s shuffle.

Chris Nathan is a Nashville-based soulful singer songwriter.  He has released a few EPs and albums, but the song we have today Never Needed Nothing is from a Demo. It’s a cool song.

We have a video of a different Chris Nathan song.

I have noticed an interesting phenomenon, whenever the shuffle includes a David Bowie song (particularly if it is a Ziggy Stardust cut), my page views experience a dramatic uptick. I guess there are a lot of Bowie fans out there.  If you have reached my blog because of the mention of David Bowie – well welcome and please stick around and check out all of our great artists. I am not including a Bowie song in a crass attempted to garner page-views – the shuffle has a mind of it’s own, but I would never turn anyone away.  Today, we have the demo version of Lady Stardust from one of the Ziggy reissues.

John Doe of X fame has had a long and celebrated solo career outside of the L.A. punk legends and their spin-off project the Knitters. Today’s song, The Golden State, is from his 2007 album A Year in the Wilderness and features Kathleen Edwards.

One of the most original and fun bands we’ve had the opportunity to feature this year is Nashville based Cheer Up Charlie Daniels.  The song that first turned us on to them is the raucous rave-up called Bunsen Burner Baby Blues which can be found on the Live in ’79 record.
Keep the beacon burnin’ ’cause it’s a blind blind world” from Beacon by Lone Justice from their second album Shelter.  I have to admit, Beacon is not a song I was as familiar with as other Lone Justice songs, but listening to it this morning, I decided it was exactly what I need to hear.
Could not find a video for Beacon, so here is the title track to Shelter.
In my opinion, proof of the unfairness of the world can be found in the fact that Let’s Active did not achieve global domination.  Again, just my take, but as I see it, Afoot and Cypress represent near pure pop perfection in the best possible way.  I listened to the stunning Ring True this morning, and I find it difficult to explain how happy this song made me feel.

Irish rockers, U2 were a huge part of my musical development, and by the time of Rattle and Hum, I was beginning to lose interest as my tastes evolved and expanded. So when Achtung Baby was released in 1991, the opening salvo was like a swift kick.  This stands as one of my favorite albums, I think, primarily for the joyful surprise it provided.  I have to wonder if U2 has any more joyful surprises in their bag of tricks….  We have So Cruel in the shuffle today.

We close out our shuffle with the legendary Australian rock band, Hoodoo Gurus from their second album Mars Needs Guitars! with the lively and fun song, In the Wild.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Brand New Phone Mix

So, I got  my new phone that is even smarter than I am…. I haven’t set up playlists so I shuffled all the songs on my memory card.  By the way, the picture above, was my view as I began my walk this morning.

Started the shuffle with a song I picked out.  Sometimes, you just need some pure decadent nastiness to start your morning, and who is better to deliver a good dirty song than our old friends, The End Men with the appropriately titled A Dirty Song from their first EP Build It Up.  New music is eminent from The End Men as 2013 gets underway – so stay tuned in…

While the original line-up of Lone Justice did not make it past the first album, there second album Shelter was pretty darn good and produced one of my all-time favorite songs, the gorgeous Dixie Storms.

I’m Gonna Make You Love Me was originally on the 2000 album Smile by The Jayhawks.  It also appeared on the band’s 2009 compilation Music from The North Country – The Jayhawks Anthology.

Nashville’s own Lambchop released their latest album earlier this year. It’s called Mr. M and we have the lovely and tragic, If Not I’ll Just Die to close out this historic shuffle.
By the way, at press time – the download is just $4.99 at Amazon.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Semi-Circle of Life Mix

Greetings and Salutations….

Time is short, so let’s get to the shuffle:

In contrast to yesterday’s shuffle which contained a mix of classic (i.e. very old music) and new stuff, all of the songs in today’s shuffle were released in 2012.  Let’s get to it…

First up, we have a young band from Florida which I came across during some random surfing on Bandcamp. Grounded play noisy rock and I kind of dig their style… so yeah… The song we have today is called Take the Hit… We have the Bandcamp widget for you to listen and Download Grounded’s three song demo and it’s Free! So take a chance with Grounded.

http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/album=1849887131/size=grande3/bgcol=FFFFFF/linkcol=4285BB/
Next up, we have another superb song from the Marvin Country! album by Marvin Etzioni (Lone Justice).  This one is called Bob Dylan is Dead, and it’s a really great song.  Interesting and totally random incident… yesterday, I went to Twitter and saw that Bob Dylan was trending, and I had to immediately make sure he had not died.  He hadn’t.  Rather he is releasing his 35th studio album soon.   Anyway, you really need to go get Marvin Country!

I could not find a video for Bob Dylan is Dead, so here is a interview with Mr. Etzioni from Inside Music Row.

And finally, we dig deeper into the awesome debut by Nashville rock superground, The Bluefields. The album is called Pure, and the song today is called Trainwreck.  The Bluefields started a three week run of free shows at the Hi-Watt in Nashville.  I missed last night and will have to miss next week, but I am going to try to make it the week after.  If you’re around Nashville head on down for what is sure to be a good time.

Let’s get to the shuffle:

On Monday’s, we like to dig into our archives.

1.  First up, we have a track from the self-titled debut of a band which formed in England and featured an American lead singer).  Chrissie Hynde is from Akron, Ohio and attended Kent State.  She was at the school when the infamous shootings took place.  While in university, we was in a band with Mark Mothersbaugh (Devo).   Brass in Pocket was the seventh video played on MTV.

Next up, we have a track from the second album of Hoodoo Gurus, the legendary Australian band. The album, Mars Needs Guitars! , is one of their best, and Bittersweet remains one of my favorite songs.

Next, we have a track from the self titled debut of L.A. band, Lone Justice. The song, Ways To Be Wicked was written by Tom Petty and Mike Campbell. Lone Justice, the album was released during the early part of my college career, and was part of the soundtrack of that phase of my life.

And finally, we stick to 1985. Rumbleseat from John Cougar Mellencamp’s Scarecrow album. In 1985, liking Mellencamp was still hard for this burgeoning post-punk fan to admit, but like it I did.  By the time, Mellencamp released his Lonesome Jubilee album, it was easier. I saw him on the Lonesome Jubilee tour with a bunch of Clash fans who challenged me with their far-left politics.  The show was a joyful, three hour blow-out.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Feels Like It Mix

On the horizon and over the edge….
Hey ya’ll voting is proceeding hot and heave in our Band of the Month Poll. Killing Kuddles was fast of the gate and opened up a huge lead, but of late, Jo Wymer has made a run and is currently just 36 votes behind (UPDATE: Killing Kuddles has increased their lead). The rest of the pack is trailing, but there are still 10 days left.  Go get to the poll and vote for your favorite band/artist.  Vote early and often.
What else….  It’s about time for the me to pick our Featured Artists for July.  I’ve got a pretty decent short list which I am going to narrow down to 10, but it’s not too late, if you have any suggestions or if you would like to be considered drop me a line.  Just put Featured Band – July in the subject line.
Onward we go into this morning’s shuffle:
First up we have a track from April’s double album called, Marvin Country!, which features Marvin Etzioni and some special guests including Richard Thompson, Steve Earle, John Doe, Buddy Miller, and Lucinda Williams.  On You Possess Me, Marvin reunites with his Lone Justice band mate Maria McKee.

(couldn’t find a video of You Possess Me, so here’s the classic East of Eden by Lone Justice)
Next up, we have Andrew Bird covering a song by Alpha Consumer which is a side-project of two members of his backing band.  The song is called, The Crown Salesman. The song is part of a Andrew Bird Noisetrade Sampler:

The Alpha Consumer version is on the band’s 2010 release called Kick Drugs Out of America.

I Love You (But You’re Boring) was originally on The Beautiful South’s debut album Welcome to the Beautiful South. It is the companion piece to I Hate You (But You’re Interesting) which was on Choke. Los Campesinos! recently covered I Love You (But You’re Boring), and frontman Gareth will soon be touring with Beautiful South (and Housemartins) frontman Paul Heaton. You can get details here.  And head to Stereogum for a download of today’s cover.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Lights and Sirens Mix

blah blah blah…. some mornings the words just don’t want to come. And, I write anyway.  Sitting and thinking. I always think life would be easier if only… but the if only rarely comes around and when it does it never works they way I thought it would and also, there is always something more.
It’s when I can find some measure of peace in the moment I am living….
Monday morning – so everyone is dragging a bit. A gray day which doesn’t really help all that much, but there is supposed to be sunshine later:

The Replacements are up first with a song from their first LP, Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash.  Takin’ a Ride typifies the raucous early sound of the boys from Minneapolis. Looking back at their discography, it’s kind of amazing that there was just nine years between this album and All Shook Down.

(Click, purchase & download an expanded version of Sorry Ma with 31 songs)

Lone Justice are up next with a nifty little rave up from their second album Shelter, it’s I Found Love . As always Maria McKee is in fine voice and I dare you not to tap you feet to this one.

(Click, purchase & download Shelter now)

Marshall Crenshaw, now, with a live version of his Life’s Too Short song, Fantastic Planet of Love.  This one comes from the 2004 Razor & Tie release Live…my truck is my home

(click, purchase & download Live…my truck is my home now)

Finally, just some syrupy ear candy to round out the days selection. I know songs like this turn off some of my regular readers, but I freely admit, I’m a total sucker for silly pop songs.  Wham! were all the rage back in my young life, while I was trying to stay cool and maintain my musical creds, I’m pretty sure I danced around my room to this one… but that’s a story for another blog post… I give you Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go from Make it Big

(click, purchase & download the song here-come on, you know you want to… :-))

Whoa, quite a ride from Replacements to Wham! Until next time, “Jitterbug into my heart…”

Don’t You Know Who I Think I Was?: The Best of the Replacements
Great as the Replacements were, it’s a little difficult to recommend one of their great albums as an introduction to the band. Sure, it’s easy to see Let It Be as a masterwork of the ’80s underground, capturing the group’s ragged humor and heart, but it d
