Monday!  It is AMA week in Nashville… which means it is like a typical music week in Nashville on steroids. Welcome everyone visiting our fair city this week. 

The week got off to a rousing start with East Nashville Songwriters Club in loft at Mad Donnas on the East side.  Sammy Brue pretty much blew everyone away with a late addition opening slot.  He was followed by the regularly scheduled Brian Johannesen, Joshua Black Wilkins, and Kristina Murray who all absolutely killed!

Tonight is the Kevin Gordon CD Release Show at City Winery Nashville with Sarah Potenza opening and lots of special guests.

Let’s get this week started right with a shuffle…

“Kicked Around” by Telepathic Teddy Bear

Our second to the last song from the album Forgiveness.  I dig this song – as I do almost all of what Telepathic Teddy Bear does… and what a great name!

“Acceleration” by Drivin’ N’ Cryin’

The Atlanta Georgia based band, Drivin’ N’ Cryin’ last released a full-length record in 2009. Since then, they are released a series of EPs with “Songs” in the title.  This track is from their 2012 EP called Songs About Cars, Space and the Ramones.  Ironically, I was sitting stuck in traffic most of the time this song was playing.

“Where the Face of Angels Lay” by The Jackals

The Jackals are from Edinburgh, Scotland.  This is my first listen and a track from their new album People.  Some good old psychedelic-influenced rock and roll. I dig it.

“What a Way to Go” by Tim Carroll

From Pure As Coal.  I count myself very lucky to have the opportunity to see Tim Carroll every week (at least once).  He is one of Nashville’s best songwriters and guitarists.  He also was our 300th “Like” on Facebook!

“Divisionary (Do the Right Thing)” by Ages and Ages

Another track from the 100 song World Café Sessions download – this one is the title track from the second album by Portland, Oregon band Ages and Ages. This was actually my first listen to this band, and I am interested in hearing more.

“What’s Got Wrong With You?” by Webb Wilder

Webb Wilder will be one of Kevin Gordon’s guests tonight at City Winery.  From Wilder’s album, Hybrid Vigor.  I’ve been a Webb Wilder fan for going on 30 years.

“Bury My Body” by Al Kooper and Shuggie Otis

From the 1969 album Kooper Session featuring the legendary Al Kooper and then 15 year old guitar phenom, Shuggie Otis – son of Johnny Otis.  This song is a 9 minute long uplifting celebration of great music.  A big hat tip to Sue Havlish who not only recommended this but sent me the song via iTunes.

Via the Music Maker Relief Foundation… Essie Mae Brooks was born in 1930 and began singing with her grandfather, who was a harmonica player, and she begin singing and writing Gospel music as a child.  She has never stopped.

“To Miss Someone” by Maria McKee

Another beautiful song from the self-titled debut solo album by the former lead singer of Lone Justice.

“My Friend From College” by 100% Beefcake

I don’t know which is stranger: a couple of young Connecticut teenagers singing about a friend from college, that said teenagers call themselves 100% Beefcake, or that they music they produce is both delightfully weird and downright awesome.  It’s all strange to me, but then again, I like strange.

“McLane’s Dad” by Mothers

New York band Mothers album Panamanian Times has been floating around our playlist for several months now, and it is always cool when another song pops into the shuffle.  This one is called “McLane’s Dad”.  A refreshing breath of punk rock attitude in the middle of a Wednesday shuffle.

“Beast of NYC” by The End Men

I honestly thought 2013 Ear to the Ground Band of the Year, The End Men were the Beast of NYC… but they are definitely Beast-like in their power and intensity.

“The World Ender” by Lord Huron

Lord Huron is an L.A. band.  This song is from their latest album, Strange Trails which was released earlier this year.  The gorgeous recording I listened to came from a World Café session and was one of 100 songs that World Café made available for immediate download (visit the World Café Tumblr page).

“Sweet Tennessee” by Judah and the Lion

As I have mentioned, Judah and the Lion are a fast-rising band from Nashville.  Judah Akers happens to be the son of two people I went to school with years ago (a year or so apart).  The song is the title track from an EP that was released in 2013. It is a lovely tribute to my home state.

“Stay Here With Me” by Jesse Terry

Jesse Terry is a Connecticut based singer-songwriter who will be appearing at Bonnaroo later this month. I know this because this song was on the Noisetrade Bonnaroo compilation album.  It is the lovely lead and title track from their 2013 album.

“Alison’s Starting to Happen” by Lemonheads

A classic from the classic album, It’s A Shame About Ray…

“Andy’s Song” by Telepathic Teddy Bear

A modest proposal to deal with the problem of people talking during music performances: Just let John Moreland play.  I saw John Moreland play twice last night. The first was at Music City Roots where he wowed an audience mostly unfamiliar with his music.  Later, he played a full headlining set at The 5 Spot in East Nashville in front of a packed house.  The minute John Moreland began to play, the crowd (a bar crowd after 11:00pm) fell silent almost immediately.  A friend of mine asked what it was about his music that had that effect.  In the moment, the only words that came to me were the emotional vulnerability of his songs.  I don’t know if that is the answer.  But, it got me thinking about vulnerability, and how our society sees it as a weakness, but how in the hands of someone like John Moreland – it can be such a powerful thing.

“Heima” by Hildur Gudnadottir

Hildur Gudnadottir is a cellist and composer currently based out of Berlin.  This stunning composition comes from a Noisetrade Sampler from the recent Big Ears Festival which took place in Knoxville, Tennessee.  Quite an impressive line-up at that festival.

“Buddy” by The Western Shore

One of my favorite songs from the Thunderstorm album.  I saw The Western Shore Monday night, and they are preparing to hit the road for a short tour which includes a couple of West Coast dates with Nikki Lane.

“Breathe” by Maria McKee

Another track from Maria McKee’s self-titled debut solo album.  McKee was named among the “Top 10 Female Artists You Really Should Know” in a recent article – she was included with other great artists like Kate Bush, Alison Moyet, and Nina Hagen among others. Well deserved.

“Revelation (The Final Book)” by Jeremiah Tall

In a short time, I’ve come to really dig this guy’s music.  It’s available on Noisetrade, you should really check it out.  (Free – but donate if you can, and definitely share to spread the word).

“Tying Ten Knots in the Devil’s Tail” by Townes Van Zandt

A classic western poem/song performed by the legendary Townes Van Zandt from a 1973 live recording.

“The Difference” by Dan Coyle

From Perfect Word, Perfect Beat comes this song with a great doo-wop sound. 

“Sharp Feathers” by Telepathic Teddy Bear

From the album Forgiveness…  Telepathic Teddy Bear writes great songs and produces great sounding records. 

“Don’t Make Nothin’ in the USA” by Tim Carroll

The lead track and one of my favorite songs on the new Tim Carroll album, Pure As Coal.  A ton of my East Nashville friends are featured in the video including Kalee Smyth from The Western Shore who we heard from earlier in the shuffle.  I was at The 5 Spot when the live performance portions of the video were recorded. 

“Napoleon” by Scott Miller

Scott Miller was one of the performers at Music City Roots last night, and he was fantastic.  He was previously a member of the seminal Knoxville band The V-Roys.  This song comes from a compilation album called Bubbapalooza Vol. 1: Chronicle of the Redneck Underground – which also included Southern Culture on the Skids and others. 

“Plight of Imemine” by Broken Guru

Broken Guru are an Alternative Rock band from New York City. Their debut album, Bent Up Halo is scheduled to be released on April 28.  You can currently stream five of the songs from that album on their Bandcamp page.

“I Want the One I Can’t Have” by The Smiths

We close out today’s shuffle with a track from The Smiths’ second album, Meat is Murder.  Any shuffle that includes The Smiths and Townes Van Zandt can’t be bad…

“My Uncle, the Violin Shredder” by Batkhi Dahn

Another cool track from Batkhi Dahn. Coincidently, both Chris and Tina from Tom Tom Club and Batkhi Dahn are from Connecticut – along with some other cool folks I know.  Must be something in the water up there.  To avoid reposting the only Batkhi Dahn video I know about, I have reposted the newest video from Batkhi Dahn’s other project, The Foresters (who not coincidentally are also from Connecticut).

“Strictly Reserved for You” by Charles Bradley

Makes me want to create a rule that I must have at least one funk/soul song in a shuffle every week.  This comes off of the Hangout Music Festival Sampler I mentioned earlier this week, and it is also the lead track on Bradley’s 2013 album Victim of Love.

A frosty, cold morning here in Nashville.  I needed some tunes to heat things up, and as usual my shuffle mode did not let me down…. let’s get to the mix o’ the day

“I Confess” by Tom Tom Club

Nothing heats things up like good dance music, and Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth and company make some of the best.  This is another from Boom Boom Chi Boom Boom (1988).

“The War on the Terror and the Drugs” by Ike Reilly with Shooter Jennings

Somebody has to fight the war on the terror and the war on the drugs. You can take all the terror and Ike and Shooter will take all the drugs. Deal?

“Boys Can Never Tell” by J Roddy Walston and the Business

J Roddy Walston and the Business are based out of Richmond, VA, but the band formed in Cleveland, TN.  The song came to me via a Noisetrade sampler of artist scheduled to appear at this year’s Hangout Music Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama.  The video I found is J Roddy playing this song with Shovels and Ropes. “All Kindsa Girls” by The Real Kids

Proto-Punk from Boston.  John Felice was an early member of The Modern Lovers and left to form The Real Kids in 1972. Aggressive music based upon the roots of rock and roll music. This still sounds great 40+ years later. From the self-titled first album.

“This Will End in Tears” by Sean Watkins

Another great song from Sean Watkins’ All I Do is Lie album.

“The Old Revolution” by Leonard Cohen

Going way back to 1969 and Leonard Cohen’s second album, Songs from a Room. Sublimely wonderful song, sung by a golden throated still young singer.

“The Cardinal” by Julie Christensen Band

That sly shuffle function has done it again, Julie Christensen spent a decade or so singing back up for Leonard Cohen.  Before that, as part of the Divine Horsemen, she was an active part of an L.A. scene that helped to fuse the bond between Punk and what would become Alt-Country and Americana. Now, East Nashville is proud to claim her as our own, and she is stepping out with some great new songs (look for an album upcoming).  The Cardinal which is a stand out of her recent live shows comes off a demo with the incredible band she has assembled.  The accompanying video can serve as a preview of what you will see you come out to The Family Wash in East Nashville on Friday night.  Julie and her band go on at 9:30, and my friend Russell Thompson begins around 8:30.

“Lisa Anne” by Bill Lloyd

I don’t know how many times or ways I can say that Bill Lloyd is one of Nashville’s greatest musical assets.  Besides the incredible Pop songwriting demonstrated on Feeling the Elephant (and his other albums), he leads the incredible Long Players who recreate classic albums (often joined by some of the original players). He was also part of the Country music duo Foster and Lloyd (whose first two album are being rereleased by RCA soon). 

“Young Love” by Telepathic Teddy Bear

We close things out with a gorgeous song by Telepathic Teddy Bear from his album called Forgiveness.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Honey Honey Mix

I am honestly at loss for what to write about in this introduction.  I am scheduled to see a bunch a good music including taking in my first 3rd and Lindsley show for No Depression. At the rate things are going, I may not even make it to East Nashville until Friday – which is highly unusual.

Today’s shuffle is a pretty balanced mix of current (or at least recent) music along with some of my all-time favorites….  Let us see what is in store….

“Honey Honey” by Hugh Mitchell

This is the second track we’ve featured by Hugh Mitchell who is currently hanging around Nashville.  I had the great pleasure of talking to him some this weekend and here’s hoping for some new music from him soon.  I absolutely love this song.  It is so well-crafted and man that hook!

“Monsters of the World Unite!” by Homer and Jethro

Country Music Hall of Fame duo Homer and Jethro sing about all of the misunderstood monsters of the the movies…. with the chorus of “Gory, Gory Alleleuia” Perfectly awesome!

“Shut In” by Strand of Oaks

Timothy Showalter aka Strand of Oaks with a track from his latest album HEAL.

“And a Bang on the Ear” by The Waterboys

This song does not advocate violence.  A “bang on the ear” is similar to a “peck on the cheek”. An exuberant song about falling in love. 

“Got My Mind Set On You” by George Harrison

From the last George Harrison solo album released in his lifetime (Cloud Nine).  This was considered a comeback of sorts or at least a triumphant return.  And this song…

“The First to Know” by Joe Nolan

Joe Nolan was the featured artist at this past Sunday’s East Side Invasion, and it was so good to hear him play several of his great songs.  This song is from the remastered version of his album Blue Turns Black which is scheduled for release soon. 

“Bad Self Portraits” by Lake Street Dive

This is the title track from the latest album by Boston’s Lake Street Dive.  I really like this song.

“Slow Burn” by Telepathic Teddy Bear

I am always glad to hear new music from Telepathic Teddy Bear – who besides having the best name ever also makes great electronic pop music. This is from his new album Forgiveness.

“This Land is Your Land” by The Waterboys

Another one from Fisherman’s Blues.  This is a modified version of the Woody Guthrie folk standard that was a response to “God Bless America”.

WOW Wednesday – In Spite Mix

WOW = Wide Open Wednesday where E2TG opens up the entire contents of the 32GB memory card and shuffles the heck out of it.  Okay, so WOW Wednesday is redundant. How about WOW = Wide Open Window or Wide-Open Whatever… that’s not the point. 

The point is that when I load up all the songs which currently reside on my phone (merely a subset of my entire music collection, mind you) all bets are off. There is some really weird stuff, some familiar names (E2TG favorites and classic artists), genres ranging about as far as genres can range, new music, older music, and very old music.  Luck of the draw determines the results…  Here is today’s WOW Wednesday Shuffle….

Starting today and continuing for most days, I am going back to the classic shuffle size – if things get too backed up, I may do a super shuffle Friday every so often, but I think this will give me a better chance to really focus on the songs being featured…

“Suit and Tie” by Justin Timberlake (Feat. Jay Z) from The 20/20 Experience

Yes it is true, #E2TG mostly focuses our attention on lesser known, indie/diy artists who are out there making great music and who deserve a lot more attention than they often get.  Still… sometimes, we like to shake things up and throw a big hit pop song into the mix.  What can I say, I have a soft spot for hook filled hit singles…  This one takes us back to 2013 and the multi-talented Justin Timberlake and some dude named Jay Z (with or without a hyphen?).  Suit up! 

“Every Time the Son Leaves” by Telepathic Teddy Bear from Reactions

Defying odds… yesterday, we had a relatively new song from Telepathic Teddy Bear, and today, our WOW shuffle comes up with this gem from his 2011 album Reactions.

 

“I Love My Label” by Nick Lowe from Best of Yep Roc Singles/Jesus of Cool (2008 Reissue)
One of the bonus tracks from the reissue of Nick Lowe’s 1978 Solo Debut album. Nick Lowe, man. Freaking Nick Lowe!  The video playlist includes a live version of this song performed by Lowe and Wilco at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.  

“In Spite of Ourselves” by John Prine and Iris Dement from Cool As Folk/In Spite of Ourselves
And, the WOW shuffle ends with the always amazing John Prine and sweet, funny song performed with the equally amazing Iris Dement.

12.  I almost forgot.  Our friend Tipi Valley is from Wales.  The Mumbles is a place in Wales or something.  Anyway, this is a cool song, and quit giggling at the word Titfull.
