Monday Morning Music Shuffle – A Few of My Favorite Things 2013 Mix – Part Five

Stupid winter bugs…. well, I was out sick Friday – so no shuffle.  But, today’s shuffle includes music I would have featured on that day – plus a few more.   I’m actually going to be away for the rest of the week.  Ear to the Ground will return Monday December 30 to present the 3rd Annual Band of the Year award (for the first time not based upon a poll).

Let’s get to the music…

“I Guess That’s True” by Calicocat
“Lincoln” by EdTang
“Hey Grace, Hey Tony” by Grace and Tony
“May the Road Rise to Meet Your Face” by James Crawford
“Afraid to Die” by Monks of Mellonwah
“Screwdriver” by Prince
“Arrival in a Distant Land” by The Gabriel Construct
“Patience” by Mr. Kind
“Halo Day (4 ‘Drew)” by Tim Lee 3
“Bill, I Believe This is Killing Me” by EdTang
“Davey Jones” by The Blind Owl Band
“I’d Rather be High” by David Bowie
“Lonesome Street” by The Blind Owl Band
“Knocking on Heavens Door” by You and Me
“Divine Restlessness” by Marla Mase
“On the Watch (Parts V- XII)” by The Gypsy West
“Tennessee” by The Coal Men
“New Jerusalem” by Valued Customer
“Saint” by Mission South

NOTES:

Sadly, Nashville’s Calicocat called it quits this year, but first, they dropped their brilliant Mighty Superfluous.

Look for Grace and Tony to continue to light things up in 2014. Their debut album November dropped in… well November.

Reuniting with old classmates on social media can be a hit or miss endeavor. From acrimonious political rankling to endless game requests, there can definitely be a downside.  On the other hand, there are people I didn’t know too well in school who I’ve gotten to know and like through the web.  And then there is James Crawford who just happened to make one of my favorite albums of the year.

Prince and David Bowie released excellent new music in 2013. Go figure.

The Gypsy West kicked off 2013 with the release of the final part of their Accomplices trilogy. We loved it.

Valued Customer.

I saw Mission South at the Basement when I went out to see my friends Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray. They are from D.C. and pretty freakin’ awesome.

Ear to the Ground Presents…. 2013 Part I

So, we mentioned at the beginning of yesterday’s Shuffle that we have gone through almost an entire 1/4 of 2013 without naming a Band of the Week, Band of the Month or Featured Artist.  It’s funny because, it was circumstances beyond our control which initially created this situation, but as with much of what we do, it seemed to be the right thing to do.

You may be aware, that once we feature a band/artist, we kind of add them to our family in a way.  We have Twitter Lists and Facebook Lists that we have created and that we follow regularly.

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);

One of the things I wanted to avoid was naming someone a Featured Artist and then barely featuring them. It has happened, though not intentionally.  So, as March winds down, I thought I would look back at the first part of this year.

Ear to the Ground Presents…. after the jump

Old Friends, New Music:

Thus far in 2013, we’ve had the chance to review three new records from three old friends who we already considered part of the Ear to the Ground Family.

Gypsy West  Back in January, we reviewed the 3rd EP in the Accomplices trilogy which was subtitled No Barcodes.  Check out our review here.

http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/album=386233350/size=venti/bgcol=FFFFFF/linkcol=4285BB/

Tim Lee 3  In February, we did what was one of the first reviews/previews of the highly anticipated new record from Knoxville based Tim Lee 3, called Devil’s Rope. Here is our review.  Did you know that Tim Lee was part of the legendary 80s band, The Windbreakers who recorded with Mitch Easter and collaborated with Richard Barone among others?

The End Men  So it’s offical, we have now tagged The End Men more than any other term, band or artist.  So, it’s logical that when we set out to review their incredible new record Play With Your Toys, we did it a four part series of posts.  For your convenience, here is a link that includes all of the record breaking posts that were tagged “The End Men”

http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/album=998121910/size=venti/bgcol=FFFFFF/linkcol=4285BB/

Calicocat  Nashville-based Calicocat called it quits, but before they did they released another, final great release.  Mighty Superfluous has been in heavy rotation on our playlist this month, and along with their other releases, leaves behind a great legacy of music.  We wish the band members well as they pursue a number of different projects.

New Friends:

We continue to meet new people, and tonight we are going to add three artists/bands/whatever to the Ear to the Ground musical family.  They came to us in different ways and play vastly different styles of music, but that is exactly how we like it. All three of these artists have appeared thus far in Shuffles, although not as often as we would like.  We have it in our heads to review all three of their newest released which made there way to us, but it’s time to present them formally, and we’ll keep working on those official reviews.  Unofficially, all three of these albums are worth buying and all three of these artists are worth getting to know….

Mark Robinson/Mark Robinson Band

Although Nashville is better known for commercial Country Music and more recently for our indie-rock transplants like Jack White and The Black Keys, the city has a long history of outstanding blues men and women.  Many of the great players spent/spend their days backing some of  the mainstream Country music being produced in Music Row studios, and then gathered in dark, smoky bars to play the music that they really loved – The Blues.  By now, the Nashville Blues scene is pretty well established and is attracting great players from all over.  Mark Robinson moved to Nashville from Bloomington, Indiana a few years ago, and he just recently released his second solo record, Have Axe, Will Groove which features track after track of great sounding modern blues music.  The album features some local players and singers who are well-known enough for even this non-Blues affectionado to know.

Marla Mase

As I mentioned, our three new featured artists this time, cover a pretty wide range of musical styles and influence.  New York artist Marla Mase covers a a lot of territory on her own, and in fact, really creates her own particular space on the musical spectrum.  Mase is a performance artist in the truest sense of that term, but rest assured, her album Speak – which was released in 2011 and just recently given the deluxe treatment is great music.  We’ve featured a couple of her songs in our Morning Shuffles, and the album is full of a number of challenging and great sounding music.  The Deluxe edition of her album includes a fantastic Dub mix of the title track by the legendary Bill Laswell.  Back in September Mase was invited to perform in China as part of UN Global Peace Day.

Susan James

California Singer-Songwriter Susan James reached out to us on Facebook.  She just recently released her latest album called Driving Toward the Sun which is a stunning gorgeous collection of folksy, rootsy music that has California written all over it.  Working with producer Ryan Ulyate who has worked with Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and George Harrison, the album features ex-Lone Justice drummer Don Heffington and guitarist Neal Casal who has worked with Ryan Adams among others.  We’ve already featured a couple of songs in Shuffles and are really in love with this record.

We are happy to feature these artists, and to add them to the bands and artists we follow.   In the last couple of weeks and in the weeks to come, more great music is making it’s way to our ears and we will continue to bring you as much of it as we can.  Look for new music from our old friends Killing Kuddles and Taco Land plus the highly anticipated new album from 2012 Band of the Year Skeletons in the Piano which is due out soon on Magnetic Eye records.

In the meantime, please check out this special Playlist featuring all of the bands featured in this post….

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Auteur Couture Manure Mix

Time marches on… btw, as is often the case, the subtitle of the post has nothing to do with the music.  This time, it is just a random phrase that jumped into my brain.

This morning, we had a pre-shuffle that included the likes of:

Dog Without Warning – a bay area band we discovered at Couch by Couchwest this year.  Check out their CXCW set in the Playlist at the bottom of the post.

Son House – the song we heard is included in the playlist below.

Tim Lee 3 who have been featured either pre-shuffle or shuffle every day this week – as they should be! The heartbreakingly beautiful Halo Days is in the Playlist below.

Calicocat – The more we hear from this Nashville band’s final album, the more we mourn the demise of the band, but we do wish the members well in their future musical pursuits.  The Video included in the playlist below is about the only one we could find on YouTube. (Although we found lots of videos of actual calico cats).

Next, we segued into our Official Shuffle (patent pending) with a song from…. (after the pic and the jump)

  • “Into the Mines” by The End Men from Play With Your Toys (2013)

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js

That’s right suckas, it’s time for your daily The End Men mention at Ear to the Ground.  Now that I’ve had the chance to meet them in person, I’m even more in love this band.  Into the Mine is a disturbing fable of possible abduction far below the surface of the earth.  Yeah!

  • “The Highway” by The Lucky Jukebox Brigade from Pretty Well Damned (2012)
After yesterday’s post, I heard from all four bands in the shuffle either by Like, Comment, Retweet or Favorite.  Which is pretty cool.  Deanna from The Lucky Jukebox Brigade wrote and pointed out that their album is available for free download on Bandcamp so I’ve included that link above. Another great track from that album.

  • “Kanye Spaghetti Western” by NOSE! from 12in12x12 (2013)
NOSE! are also back for a second straight day.  This song is a brief, instrumental that somehow transitioned so well between The Lucky Jukebox Brigade and the next song in our shuffle that I had to go back and give it another listen.  The playlist down below includes the now infamous 2012 Couch by Couchwest footage that ultimately culminated in a massive police action which sadly was not shown in the available footage. Did I mention that they are from my hometown? I  don’t get to say that very often…

  • “State Hospital” by Frightened Rabbit from Pedestrian Verse (2013)

Glasgow alternative-rockers released their latest album in February.  State Hospital which was also the title track from the EP that preceded the release of the album.

  • “4th Floor” by JENNY from Heavy (2010)
JENNY is a Canadian band which includes Spencer Kathrens who was a member of the now defunct Inner City Elegance who were one of our earliest Featured bands. See the Bandcamp widget above to grab Heavy which I’m digging so far.

Check out the YouTube playlist below and we’ll catch you later….

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Death-Defying All Odds Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js <!– google_ad_client = "ca-pub-5465441380757075"; /* E2TG #2 */ google_ad_slot = "6306625404"; google_ad_width = 728; google_ad_height = 90; //

I hope you haven’t forgotten to check out Couch by Couchwest, but if you have, no worries. Unlike that other festival, you can go right now and get caught up. In a day and a few hours, we’ve already seen our friends: The Foresters, Kassy Key and the Raindogs ,and Cupla. Plus tons of bands who are new to us, but who we are digging on big time.  We hope to have some highlights up soon.

Today was a rainy day, a Monday and it was the first work day after Daylight Savings Time began. How do you improve on that? How about a killer playlist of cool music.

Today’s pre-shuffle shuffle included: The Avett Brothers, a triple shot of classic Elvis Costello, Delta Spirit, and The Dead Exs.  All of these songs are included (or represented in the You Tube Playlist embedded below. We have four songs in our actual shuffle today.  Check those songs out – after the jump:

  •  This is PiL by Public Image Limited from This is PiL (2012)

The title track from Public Image Limited’s first studio album in 20 years sounds about like you would expect. Your perception and tastes will determine whether that is a good thing or not.  As the title implies, the song is about the band. Johnny Lydon still sounds like Johnny Lydon.

  • “Summer ’78” by THEY KNOW from Reverbnation download (?)

THEY KNOW are a couple of guys from Pennsylvania who I connected with through Twitter (I’m pretty sure).  “Summer of ’78” is a great sounding tune, and I look forward to checking out more of their music soon. We have a performance of a different THEY KNOW song in the playlist below.

  • “Hello Cruel World” by Gretchen Peters from CXCW12 Mixtape (2012)

Gretchen Peters is a two-time Grammy Nominated singer/songwriter who Nashville claims as our very own.  She performed the title track from her (then) brand new album for last year’s CXCW.

  • “Disorderly Boy” by Calicocat from Mighty Superfluous (2013)

Another Nashville favorite and a former featured artist at E2TG. Calicocat have called it quits after two and a half years. They leave behind and catalog impressive in it’s quantity and quality.  Might Superfluous is proof that the band left it all on the floor and we wish them all well in their future endeavors.

Now here is the playlist representing all of our pre-shuffle and shuffle shuffle songs:

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Time the Tale was Told Mix

Greetings from frosty Nashville.  We have a more traditionally-sized Morning Shuffle this morning…   Check it out – after the jump…

3 of 4 songs are represented on today’s Amazon Widget

1.  Song: Things I Do  Artist: Lydia Loveless Album: The Only Man (2010) – (the version we heard was  taken from a 10/18/2011 Daytrotter Session) – (were Punk and Country really ever that far apart?)

(a different song from Ms. Loveless)

2.  Song: Reel Around the Fountain  Artist: The Smiths Album: The Smiths (1984) – (Today we listened to a Demo version from a Bootleg Vinyl Rip – sounded awesome, by the way) – (Aw, I love the smell of Morrissey in the morning – or the sound at least).

3. Song: Eighth Avenue  Artist: Hospitality  Album: Hospitality (2012) – (Brooklyn Pop Music)
4. Song: Sophomore Slump  Artist: Calicocat Album: This is Heavy (2011) – (Prolific Nashville Rock Band – One of the bands that found their way to our ears in 2012) (Not on the Amazon Widget – but see the Widget below… #Ilikesayingwidget #hashtagsarestupid #whyamidoingthis)

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Chewing out a rhythm on my bubble gum mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); <!– google_ad_client = "ca-pub-5465441380757075"; /* E2TG #2 */ google_ad_slot = "6306625404"; google_ad_width = 728; google_ad_height = 90; //

What a week!  Friday is here.  Let’s have a shuffle!

Nashville band and past Featured Artist on Ear2theGround just released a live album recorded on Tuesday at Springwater Supper Club.  You can get that via the band’s Bandcamp page.  Today’s song comes from the September 2012 release from the band’s vault.  It’s a cover of the song that helped make Hank Williams Sr. an honorary Cajun.  I say, Calicocat have earned that distinction with this awesome cover of Jambalaya (On the Bayou), and I’m 3/4 Cajun so it’s my decision – right?

Here’s Hank!
Here’s CCR!

Another Nashville artist is up next.  Harrison Hudson from his 2011 album American Thunder with Every Girl.

Shaky is the former guitarist for the Philadelphia band Cold Fronts.  He has has some solo music out now including the song Head Over Heels.  Check it out:

Here’s a video from Cold Fronts when Shaky was part of the band.

And finally, we go back a few years to pick up on L.A. band Beachwood Sparks from their album Once We Were Trees with Confusion is Nothing New

We have arrived at mid-week, and we have a lot of music to present, so let’s get right to it.

Pigeon Park are one of our featured artists for October and are in the running to be our Band of the Month.  It’s Not That Likely, from the band’s self-titled album, finds the find in a decidedly peppy mood with a nifty break-down complete with… is that a Jew’s harp??

Here’s some footage from the band’s 2011 tour

Calicocat were a Band of the Week here at Ear2theGround back in March. Now, they have opened up their vaults for a second time with the recent release of The Vault, Vol. 2: Electric Psychedelic Calicocat Swingers Club.  The collection includes a number of very cool cover versions of classic songs, including the song in our shuffle today: the band’s rootsy cover of King of Bluegrass, Jimmy Martin’s song, Tennessee.

Here’s Calicocat on Music City Shakedown
Here’s Jimmy Martin’s verison of Tennessee

As you may know, we use the shuffle feature to help select our daily playlist – hence the Morning Shuffle designation. All that to say that through the quirks of the shuffle process, Canadian band Vulture Kult had two songs in yesterday’s shuffle and they are back with another song today.  Not that I’m complaining.  Avenue H. from Don’t Let Rock N’ Roll Ruin Your Life has a snottier attitude than some of the band’s other stuff, I dig it.

Doug Spears is billed as Florida’s Native Troubadour. It’s a apt description for this singer-songwriter who released his first album in 2005.  When the Hummingbirds Return is an unreleased song – it is a great song, and one which has a timeless yet fresh quality to it. Spears employees soft-spoken, evocative vocals and crisp, clean guitar work.  A lovely song which add nicely to the southern folk cannon.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Simple Mix

Good morning.  I am still out sick, but I have a burst of energy so I thought I would post a morning shuffle.  I’m actually listening to the shuffle now, so I suppose I will do a live blog of this shuffle… or whatever…

Song #1 – Is called Stairway to the Best Party in the Universe which is on the new album by The Brian Jonestown Massacre.   The album Aufheben and we have linkage below.

Song #2 – Youth is Wasted on the Young is the dreamy pop sound of the Vancouver based Young Galaxy from their brand new album, Shoreless Kid, which was released this past Tuesday.

Song #3 – Is another track from the classic album, Boylan Heights, by The Connells.  The song today is called Try.
Song #4 – We have If I Went Away, a kind of mellowish and dreamy bit of music from Nashville’s own (and former Band of the Week), Calicocat from their newest release – Soup Du Jour.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Times Like These Mix

Do you remember lying in bed with your covers
Pulled up over your head? Radio playin’ so no one can see.
We need change, we need it fast before rock’s just part
Of the past. ‘Cause lately it all sound the same to me. – Ramones

Radio is a sound salvation
Radio is cleaning up the nation
They say you better listen to the voice of reason
But they don’t give you any choice
’cause they think that it’s treason.
So you had better do as you are told.
You better listen to the radio.- Elvis Costello

A bunch of new songs added to the playlist last night. As of this morning there were 71 songs added in May which have not been featured on the blog.  Today, we knock out four of those 71:

There is a story of this first record.  Back in March, I was chatting with my friend, rapper and beats genius, Hayden, who was talking about this group that was reuniting for a show.  He had been listening to their music all day and posting songs to Facebook.  L.A. Symphony regardless of what I thought originally, is not the Los Angeles orchestra. Rather, they are an independent hip-hop group.  After talking to Hayden, I stopped by the local Goodwill and as I usually do, I perused the bins of used CDs. When I saw a CD by L.A. Symphony, I knew it was fated that I was to buy this, so I did.  The End.

End is Now is the opening track off the group’s 2003 album called The End is Now.

Next, we have another track from the recent release by former Band of the Week – Nashville’s own, Calicocat. The song today is called I Said and it is off the Soup Du Jour collection.
You can use the Bandcamp widget thing to download Soup Du Jour for free:

Next we have a track from top ten Band of the Year nominee Taco Land.  This time, we have their excellent cover of a Ziggy era Bowie song Five Years.  I love their take on this song, which is from one of my favorite albums of all time.

Bowie doing Five Years live from 1972
Here is Taco Land’s Wonderful Rain
Finally, we have a new song from The Holograms  – this is a different Holograms than we featured previously. The other band features our friend Galen Wade. Today’s Holograms come from Sweden, and their debut album is due out in July.  The first track is Chasing My Mind

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Wander Lost Mix

Upon this rock
The surface is not level
It slopes sharply downward
It is covered with loose pebbles
The word precarious comes to mind
Neither sure nor secure
Still standing, though,

First up this morning we have a track from the latest release by recent Band of the Week Calicocat.  Salty Dogs is off of the Soup Du Jour album which was released onto Bandcamp on May 1.  You know, I had Soup Du Jour one time, and I really didn’t care for it, so I haven’t had it since.  The album is good though, so go get it:

http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/album=1505705546/size=grande3/bgcol=FFFFFF/linkcol=4285BB/

This was the most relevant video I could find from a show that Calicocat was on the bill

Next up we have another Nashville band (by way of West Frankfort, Illinois) Ravenhill are an indie band.  We have a track called Monster Eats Pilot from the band’s debut EP Ladies and Gentlemen, I Present To You.

Get the EP on Amazon by clicking below

Here’s a live performance of a different song by Ravenhill
Next, we dig deeper into Resurrection by our good friends, The Dead Exs.  The song is called Daddy Issues and it is more bluesy rock goodness –

A different The Dead Exs song live
And finally we have a classic track by the legendary Meat Puppets.  Lost a song which the Minutemen covered many times is off the album II.  It is classic Meat Puppets at their very best.
