Once again, I am back with another Morning Music Shuffle! 

I was a little under the weather – so no shuffle yesterday….

So, here is a recap of some live music I experienced since the last post:

Friday – After venue hopping on Thursday, I decided  to stay put in one place (not that there weren’t ample opportunities to venue hop), and it was nice because there was so much great music in one spot (Bobby’s Idle Hour).  Three rounds of three singer-songwriters featuring: Round 1: Joe Nolan, Renee Wahl, and Daryl Dasher; Round 2: Jeremy Nash, Lindsay Ellyn, and Sadie Hart; Round 3: Jeremy Staubus, Lori Kelley, and Lori’s sister Michelle Nielson (in town from Iceland).

Saturday – Another one venue night (Douglas Corner) for Charlie Whitten (who has been featured on E2TG), Richie Owens and the Farm Bureau, and Ted Drozdowski’s Scissormen. 

Two wonderful night’s of music with wonderful company at two venerable Nashville institutions.

“My City” by Zachariah Red

E2TG Favorite, Zachariah Red kicks off today’s shuffle with the opening track from his album Backbone.  A rocking tune to kick off my first work day of the week.

“Shortnin’ Bread” by Neal Pattman

The late great Blues musician Neal “Big Daddy” Pattman via the Music Makers Relief Foundation. A wonderful organization that supports many wonderful music artists in many ways while also preserving the music for countless generations to come.

“Pipeline” by Agent Orange

We have been playing quite a bit of surf rock in recent months – here is a punk rock cover of an early surf rock song (originally recorded by The Chantays back in 1962). Agent Orange are a long running punk band from Orange County, California.

“When I Was Just A Boy” by Carolina Story

The Nashville-based duo Carolina Story are up next with a beautiful song from their EP Chapter 2.

“Oh My Sweet Cantankerous Baby” by Leland Sundries

Next a live version of one of my favorite songs by the Brooklyn Indie band Leland Sundries.  Connection alert: Nick Loss-Eaton of Leland Sundries is also a Board Member at Music Maker Relief Foundation which you may recall put out the Neal Pattman song way back, three whole songs ago.

“Rockin’ Chair” by Paul Zografi

Bright came out back in 2014, but we didn’t “discover” it until part way through 2015. Hence, Zografi winning one of the coveted “Better Late Than Never” “Earie” awards. Here is another great tune from that album.

“Open Passageways” by All Them Witches

We close out this shuffle with a song from Dying Surfer Meets His Maker – the latest album from this Nashville band.

Hey, I needed to get some “stuff done” today, and I decided to shuffle some music while I got the “stuff done”.  So, welcome to a rare Saturday shuffle.  Limited descriptions  – just a ton of cool tunes.

As I mentioned yesterday, E2TG’s reigning Artist of the Year was selected by Nashville’s Lightning 100 to be their Artist of the Week.  As part of that, he played a free show yesterday evening at Soulshine Pizza, and he played one of the best shows I have ever seen him put on. I could not have been more proud.

Greetings…. Let’s get right to today’s morning music shuffle… enjoy!

“Tip of My Tongue” by Dan Martin

To start things off, we have another great song from the album Hoka Hey by Oklahoma singer/songwriter Dan Martin.

“Magnet” by Punch Brothers

The Punch Brothers are the progressive bluegrass/modern classical band formed by Chris Thile in 2006.  “Magnet” is a track on their fourth and most recent studio album, The Phosphorescent Blues, which was produced by T Bone Burnett and released at the beginning of this year.

“Country Music, I’m Talking to You” by Darrell Scott

This pointed, timely, and truthful was written by the late Ben Bullington – a country doctor and songwriter who spent the last year of his life living out his dream of playing music. Darrell Scott recorded a tribute album called 10: Songs of Ben Bullington and released it earlier this year.  I was fortunate enough to attend the release show at City Winery Nashville which included an all-star cast each doing one song of Bullington’s as well as one of their own.  It was a wonderful celebration of song.  In the video playlist, we have a video Ben Bullington doing this song as part of a writer’s round at the Station Inn in Nashville. The round was a fulfillment of a dream for Bullington and featured Darrell Scott, Will Kimbrough, and Rodney Crowell.   We also have Darrell Scott’s version in the video playlist. 

“Can We Hear It?” by The Little Unsaid

The Little Unsaid are from the U.K.  This song is the lead single from their third album, Fisher King.  The band mixes folk, alternative, and electronic influences for a wonderfully unique sound.  John Elliott is the driving force behind The Little Unsaid, but the work is collaborative in nature.  This was my first listen, and I definitely want to explore more.

“Funeral For a Great Drunken Bird” by All Them Witches

From their 2014 album, Lightning at the Door.   Nashville based All Them Witches just released their latest album, Dying Surfer Meets His Maker, and they will be holding court for a two-night stand at 3rd and Lindsley this weekend.

“Wild Honey” by Webb Wilder

Speaking of Nashville artists who have just released new album, local legend and the last of the full-grown men, we have this naturally sweet song from Hybrid Vigor.  Be sure to check out Webb’s new album Mississippi Moderne. Hope to have some songs from that in the shuffle soon.

“Dusty Wingtip Shoes” by D.C. Bloom

I have had this song from Texas singer/songwriter D.C. Bloom in my playlist for a while, and it finally came up in my shuffle.   The song comes from his 2011 album New Man.  A great song from a great songwriter.

“Almost Home” by Sara Syms

We close out the shuffle with another track from Sara Sym’s brand new album, Way Back Home.  On this song, Syms shows off her vocal abilities with a song that mixes elements of blues and soul with a more traditional singer/songwriter style.

Rain is falling steadily over Nashville.  It’s a cool, dreary kind of day.  I’m already dreading the long dark winter season. 

We have some cool tunes for you this morning to help cope with the dreariness…

“Listen Closely Now” by Dan Coyle

From his 2009 album Random Thoughts and Incomplete Sentences, we have another track from Dan Coyle for you. An #E2TG favorite to be sure, and it is great to check out some older tunes that I have not heard.

“Cold Night” by Chuck Ragan and Austin Lucas

I have become a big Austin Lucas fan, and when I came across his 2008 collaboration with Chuck Ragan – called Bristle Ridge, I had to add it to my playlist.

“The Death of Coyote Woman” by All Them Witches

Nashville’s All Them Witches will be releasing their new album, Dying Surfer Meets His Maker, at the end of this week. To celebrate, they released a sampler on Noisetrade that includes a couple of tracks from the new album along with a healthy dose of older music, including this one which was on their 2014 album Lightning at the Door.

“Shelly’s Winter Love” by Jesse and Noah

Jesse and Noah are back in the shuffle – this time with a Merle Haggard cover.  I love the harmonies these guys produce.

“Renegade” by Direct Divide

From their EP Own Your Ocean which was released back in July, we have the Seattle band that describes themselves as Cinematic Rock, which I tend to agree with… there is definitely a BIG rock sound here.  This is a really cool song.

“Pray For Me” by Whiskey Shivers

Another track from the 2014 self-titled album by Austin based Whiskey Shivers.  It seems like ever since I came across this album, I keep hearing more and more about these guys.  That is a good thing.

“Live and Not Die Tryin'” by Stone Cupid

Stone Cupid is Julie Christensen’s amazing band.  Their debut album called The Cardinal is due out in January.  If you happen to catch Julie live between now and then, be sure to mention “Ear to the Ground” and she just might sell you a copy.  I have been fortunate enough to catch Stone Cupid (sans the rhythm section) a copy of times recently, and both have been phenomenal.   

“5th of July” by Dean Fields

Dean Fields was a Featured Artist on Ear to the Ground back when Featured Artist was a thing we did. Since, then he has been killing it all over the country. He started a monthly music series called Harvester and this song is one of the songs released through that project.  He also recently made all of his previous albums available for pay what you want…. so head to his website to see what all the fuss is about.

Well it’s Friday!  And it seems as if there is much to be celebrated this week (at least that is how I see it).  We have covered quite a bit of ground, musically this week, and this week-ending shuffle just pushes us that much further along.  Please remember, that my shuffle are truly random.  I just decide what is in the playlist, the random shuffle feature picks each days songs.  It tends to do a good job of it – even if I sometimes which certain songs/albums would come up sooner…

“Got to Be Mean” by Broken Guru

The second appearance of Broken Guru this week.  From the album, Bent Up Halo.

“No Wrong No Right” by Jesse Harris with Star Rover

New York singer-songwriter teams up with New York duo.  This came from a Noisetrade sampler from SXSW which has been in the playlist for some time. The title track from Jesse Harris’ album released earlier this year.

“Charles William” by All Them Witches

One of those Nashville bands that is helping to redefine (or undefine) what Nashville music is or isn’t. Got this on another Noisetrade sampler – this one from the recent Bonnaro festival.  The song is included on the band’s album, Lightning At the Door.

“Two Minutes of My Fourteen Years of Agony” by Atticus Floyd

Atticus Floyd is connected to the fertile musical movement centered around The Foresters and Bethany, Connecticut.  I will not say that this is an easy two minutes or that is particularly “accessible”… but, I guess I can say that is a pretty visceral reminder of what it felt like to be fourteen.  From Russell Stover Stole My Babbie – which came out in March.  There is already a newer release from Atticus Floyd.

“Fresh California” by Circus Propaganda

Coincidently, this track begins with a dedication to Atticus.  Indeed Atticus Floyd is/was a member of this combo.  Their album is called Botany.  From the band’s Facebook page – they are no longer playing live, but all of the members have other project(s) – some of which we have already featured here (like Atticus Floyd, The Foresters, Batkhi Dahn, and 100% Beefcake) and some we will just have to check out.  Anyway, this song and the Atticus Floyd track definitely added two or more missing elements from our diversity of music this week.

“Forked River Roadside Shrine” by Ben Arthur

From his forthcoming album of “answer” songs, Call and Response.  This is one of two songs Ben Arthur has written based upon a short story by Joyce Carol Oates.

“Strictly Business” by EPMD

The title track from the hip-hop groups’ 1988 debut album.  The track features a sample of the Eric Clapton version of the Bob Marley song, “I Shot the Sheriff”. This was influential music back in the day. 

“I Remember” by Bully

Another of those new Nashville band’s moving things forward, and getting a lot of well deserved attention for it.  Bully just this week released their debut album, Feels Like, and today we have our first official shuffle listen to a track from that album. Good stuff.

“Fallout Fields” by Elephant Revival

Elephant Revival are a Colorado based  Folk/Americana/Experimental band.  “Fallout Fields” is a track from the band’s live CD/DVD called Sands of Now which will be released in just under a month.  This came to me via e-mail (which has been busting at the seams the past few weeks – so I beg patience and persistence as I try to give everything I can a fair listen) and it is some great sounding upbeat folk music. Dig it.
