Okay… here we go… life is kicking my butt today, but music always helps… we have a pretty fun and diverse set of songs to smooth out the rough patches…

“Mr. Bojangles” by John Hamilton

Awhile back, I watched a 1973 film called Come On Children. The premise was that the director took a group of suburban youth from Toronto to a farm in the middle of nowhere with just a camera crew. It was like reality television except it was a film, and it was more authentic than reality t.v. One of the kids was Alex Lifeson of the band Rush, but for me the star of the film was a kid named John Hamilton. At the beginning of the movie, he said theme song of sorts to introduce all of the “characters”, and the later when inexplicably the kids’ families were brought in, Hamilton sang this song (written by Jerry Jeff Walker by the way).

“History Lesson” by Minutemen

A succinct history of everything. History Lesson Part II from Double Nickels on the Dime is about Mike Watt and D. Boon seeing their first punk show. This one is from The Punch Line.

“Coffee” by Matt Phillips and the Philharmonic

From the album, Move. I am really digging on Matt Phillips’ brand of upbeat folk-jazz.

“All the Times We Had” by Ivan and Alyosha

The title track from the band’s 2013 album. I’ve been enjoying spinning this album lately.

“Midnight Crisis” by Michael Sackler-Berner

Likewise, I have been thoroughly enjoying discovering the music of Michael Sackler-Berner. This song was the b-side of “She Loves Love” released in October 2014, and it was the lead track from his EP Fragile Magic which was released in March of this year.

“When Will Runs Out” by Jeremy Gluck/Robert Coyne

Seriously, though, I really do use the shuffle function, and what’s more I currently have over 700 songs in my active playlist. So, the shuffle function must really love Memory Deluxe as much as I do. Seriously you guys, check out this album.

“Venice” by The Lighthouse and The Whaler

I grabbed this song which was originally on the Ohio band’s 2012 album This is An Adventure from a SXSW Noisetrade sampler. It was my first exposure to the band, and I want to check out more.

“Images and Noise” by Mothers

This was the song that first introduced me to Mothers when I got it on the Mama Coco’s sampler. It is on their album Panamanian Times. The song lyrically name drops Elton John, The Rolling Stones, and Pink Floyd on top of an persistent and insistent riff.

“If She’s Gone, Let Her Go” by David Schnaufer

I was fortunate enough too see the late mountain dulcimer master David Schnaufer play around Nashville in the late 80s to early 90s. I rescued the album Dulcimer Sessions from the CD bins at Goodwill and I am happy to bring it to you. Check out his music.

“Sonic Boom” by Gear Daddies

From Billy’s Live Bait. This song for me captures so well the restless boredom of the suburban life of a teenager.

“Wonderful” by Taco Land

Putting things in perspective and lifting me up, comes this song from #E2TG favorite Taco Land. Joseph “Taco” Russell wrote this song after watching his young daughter play after her first round of chemo. The last report I got is that her cancer was in remission, and sending love and good vibes that news is still current.

“Bomb Disneyland” by The Fat White Family

Wow Shuffle! Really? Following up such a sweet and uplifting song as Wonderful with this? Bomb Disneyland is a raucous and totally inappropriate song from the band’s album Champagne Holocaust. You know, though, sometimes when you are down, just need a little raucous inappropriateness…

We complete three days in a row with songs from the latest album by David Olney. In the video mix is Mr. Olney reciting “Kubla Khan” by Samuel Taylor Coleridge – which as I mentioned yesterday that he performed at the beginning of one of his recent Happy Hour shows at The Five Spot in East Nashville. If you dig it, which I think you will, there are more videos of David Olney reciting poetry available on YouTube. Check them all out!

“I Hope That I Get Old Before I Die” by They Might Be Giants from First Album Live

My sentiments exactly. I think this is the penultimate track from our survey of this live recreation of the first TMBG album. It’s been fun, and I like using penultimate correctly because it makes me feel smart.

I’ve knew a girl named Julie. Actually, I’ve known and know a lot of girls and women named Julie in my life. None of them have anything to do with this song, so I’m not sure why I’m mentioning it. I do need to say, that Darrin’s weekly Wednesday night gig at Fran’s Eastside Tavern keeps getting better and better.

What’s better for a morning shuffle than a Breakfast Burrito? I still find it amazing that so many amazingly talented people have been a part of my earthly experience.

“Pipes” by Vinyl Thief from Deer Head Music Presents: Indie Mixtape Nashville

Vinyl Thief were our Band of the Month way back in July 2012 when we still had Bands of the Month. Fun facts: Vinyl Thief are from Nashville, way back in 2012 we featured them in a post that also included Darrin Bradbury’s old band Big Wilson River, and they once played the summer kick off party for my friend Hayden Coleman’s food truck – Moovers and Shakers. All that and “Pipes” is cool song and is featured on the recent Deer Head Music Indie Mixtape which we have been spinning of late.

“When I Was a Boy” by Dar Williams from The Honesty Room

I know I say this quite often, but truly this is one of my all time favorite, favorite songs. The first time I heard this song, I literally cried.

“Land of 1000 Girls” by Scruffy the Cat from Time Never Forgets – The Anthology (’86-’88)/High Octane Revival

Switching gears rapidly and harshly, we have some delicious 80s music from this legendary Boston band.

“Heart of Texas” by Taco Land from Heart of Texas

This was the song that first introduced me to Taco Land (this and their amazing over of the Bowie song “Five Years”). It was good to hear it again when I got it as a Free Download for buying an “Audrey Strong” bracelet (proceeds benefit St. Judes). Sending out positive thoughts to Joseph, Audrey, and the whole Russell and extended Taco Land family.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Friday, Saturday, and XTC Mix

Well Americana Music Association week in kicking into high gear here in Nashville. So many incredible musicians in town, official and unofficial showcases and shows and whatnot everywhere you go. Music that represents the pretty diverse collection of genres and subgenres that fall loosely or tightly under the big Americana umbrella… “It’s a big enough umbrella, but it’s always me who ends up getting wet.”

Forever, swimming against the wind or pissing into the stream or whatever, Ear to the Ground presents a shuffle which includes some 1950s Portuguese Fado music, some 1970s Afro-jazz from Nigeria, a 90s lo-fi band from Olympia Washington, some awesome alternative, jazz, funk, electronic music from Philly, a 90s Rock band from Knoxville, along with some other great stuff which should or could fit in nicely at Americana Fest. Shall we?

“Home Sweet Home” by Taco Land from Home Sweet Home

My now famous quote is “Taco Land is everything you’d expect from a band from South Texas called Taco Land and nothing you’d expect from a band from South Texas called Taco Land” This is the title track from their latest album… and it is not a Motley Crue cover.

“The Mooooooon (Version)” by Microphones from The Glow Pt. 2 Disc Two: Other Songs and Destroyed Versions

Okay, so I’m not too proud to admit that some young teens from Connecticut turned me on to this band… after hearing a killer cover by The Foresters, I decided to see what I had missed out on…

“Saturday Song” by Mustard from Mustard II – The Unnamed, Unfinished Album

A lot of life happened in the 90s, and I missed a bunch of great music. h/t to the Feel Bad for You monthly mixtape (which is about due for a new edition) for introducing me to this now defunct Knoxville band. I’ll have to see what else I can dig up.

“Sunshine” by Left of Logic from In Formation

From the city of brotherly love, comes the awesome sounds of Left of Logic. A note on their Facebook page indicates that the band played their last show at the end of August and that “Left of Logic” is complete. They left a great legacy of music, and hopefully in some combination or form, we’ll hear more music from these guys.

“Carmencita” by Amalia Rodrigues from 20 de Amalia

Amalia Rodrigues died in 1999. She was an actress and singer from Portugal and billed as the Queen of Fado. This is some really awesome stuff.

“Ikom Allah” by Bala Miller and the great Music Pirameeds Of Africa from Ikom Allah

Did you know that Nigeria produces some funky grooves in the 1970s? I didn’t, but now I do. You have to hear this – video included, and you will have to move when you hear this! By the way, the last two tracks came to my attention from the Peacefork blog put out by my friends Valued Customer. Trivia: I was first introduced to Valued Customer via their alternative hip-hop song, “Frank Ocean”. Music is a weird and wonderful thing.

“You n Me n XTC” by Chris Stamey from Lovesick Blues

This has been my groove ever since I first heard it. I mean, c’mon a former db singing about XTC – how can this not be all kinds of awesome?

“Friday Night Special” by Joe Sundell from The Hat Thief

Two days in a row… another great new/old folk song from Austin.

“Hitchens” by Brown Bird from Fits of Reason

We close things out with a cool song about the late writer Christopher Hitchens from a 2013 album by a band from Maine fronted by the late David Lamb. A really nifty way to bring us back to an Americana sound with subject matter maybe not what one might expect from Americana music.

I had the opportunity to see and meet Tim Carroll at his weekly residence with Darrin Bradbury at Fran’s Eastside in East Nashville. It was amazing to see him just play song after song for almost two hours???? It was like he could have just kept going. This track comes from a live album he put out a couple of years ago, and somewhere Hank Williams is grooving on this song.

“Party Poetry” by No Shoes from Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen: Section 4/Single

This ones been in the hopper for a while waiting for the shuffle monster to unleash it. From the Section 4 compilation from Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen – the very awesome No Shoes with Party Poetry.

“Friar Fight” by Ishmael from Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen: Section 5/Lotic

Jumping ahead to the most recent Mama Coco’s Comp – we have the band called Ishmael with a nifty song called Friar Fight.

“Van Rock” by Darrin Bradbury from The Almost Great Crepes

Did you notice that Darrin Bradbury was conspicuously absent from yesterday’s shuffle. He is on a bit of a vacation, so the shuffle gods thought they’d give him a break. Break’s over. When I searched for Van Rock on You Tube, I got a bunch of videos of Dave Van Ronk which is pretty cool.

“Turnstile Intervention” by aCR from ghost note manifest

An instrumental track from the new project by Liquid Casing’s aCr. Some cool prog, alt-metal (or whatever) – it’s cool.

“Muddy Boots” by The Yugos from The Yugos

Covington, Kentucky Indie Band The Yugos reenter the shuffle at number 6.

“Will I See You Again” by Christian Lopez from Will I See You Again

I recently grabbed this Christian Lopez release off of Noisetrade. He is from West Virginia and seems to have carved a pretty nice space for himself in the crowded Americana landscape. Worth checking out.

“Ain’t Nobody” by Pork Chop Willie from Love is the Devil

Any band that mixes authentic North Hill Country Blues with some Big City gusto – is okay in my book. Love is the Devil is one of the best albums of 2014, and it is definitely worthy of your attention.

“Put Your Hand Inside the Puppet Head” by They Might Be Giants from First Album Live

I dare you to listen to this song and not be happier at least for the time it is playing. I dare you!

Today, we hit our mid-week stride and explore the underbelly of my phone’s memory card (not really, but we do shuffle through the entire memory banks to come up with Morning Shuffle for today). I’m not sure that there is any sort of theme or sense to today’s shuffle…. but that works for me…

The iconic singer-songwriter John Eddie has been making great music for decades. These one goes all the way back to his self-titled debut album (1986). Trivia: Eddie did a simple awesome cover of The Cure’s “In Between Days” on the Elektra Records 40th Anniversary album Rubaiyat.

“Accomplices” by The Gypsy West from Accomplices III: No Barcodes

Things have been quiet since The Gypsy West completed their epic and awesome Accomplices set of EPs. You may remember #E2TG reviewed the last album of the trilogy back in January of 2013. If you don’t remember – check it out here.

This is an untitled demo from sometime ago (unless “newestish” is the title in which case I stand corrected). The video is for one of favorite songs of his.

“Dance Me to the End of Love” by Leonard Cohen from Various Positions

Leonard Cohen is a good addition to any shuffle. By the way, if your local library participates in the Freegal program, The Complete Studio Album Collection has recently been added to that site. And yes, in case your wondering, the video for the song from the Jools Holland show that is newish East Nashville resident Julie Christensen (Divine Horsemen) singing background vocals. Good eye.

“My Friend Superman” by Deena from Rock River

Another great track from the Rock River album. I tend to dig songs that mention superman, and this is no exception.

“In Remembrance” by The Grey A from My Country

My Country by The Grey A will be released in less than a month. Nashville readers, there will a CD release show on September 12 at The Stone Fox. The show should include appearances by many of the Nashville artists who appeared on the record.

“Riverside Blues” by Year of October from WDVX Blue Plate Special 4/12/2014

Pre-Orders for Golden Days, the new Year of October release have begun. This is the second track on the album.

Well, we muddled through another week…. It’s time for me to dive head long into creating E2TG version 3.0 (we are currently on 2.1) – I’m not sure exactly what that will entail, but it will be awesome – I bet. There may be a release 2.2 in the meantime, but maybe not… whatever, if you have ideas of what I can do to make E2TG better, now would be a good time to send them my way. I’ll either use the ideas or I won’t – it’s the cool thing of writing your own blog… 🙂 But, my philosophy since day one has been to be open to whatever comes along. So wherever we go, I see my job is just to keep this thing between the lines… (only occasionally crossing)…

Many saw 2013’s The Next Day as a return to form (and a pleasantly unexpected one at that) for Mr. Bowie.

“Anywhere” by Humming House from Humming House

A beautiful song from one of Nashville’s coolest and best bands. The video we selected is a newer song and features two of my favorite people.

“Wasted Days” by Joseph Arthur from Redemption City

I love the sound of this track from Joseph Arthur. A great companion to my trek through the downtown streets of Nashville.

Groovy coolness in every note….

“The Neighbor’s Dog” by Darrin Bradbury from The Almost Great Crepe’s

Darrin Bradbury is back in the shuffle with a song about life and death and I guess about the neighbor’s dog. Since this album isn’t available on bandcamp anymore, I won’t say anything about “neighbor” being misspelled. “I before E” my ass!

What is this song about? Don’t ask John and John. They don’t know….

“Can’t Say Why” by Taco Land from Home Sweet Home

Taco Land has a groove that just hits me in all the right ways… for kicks, I included a video of a song by The Dead Milkmen about the San Antonio landmark that gave this band its name.

“Stipulation” by Gumshen from Progtronica

We added this album to our lineup back in January, and now, we have just one or two songs left. I really like this interesting mix of sounds, and I look forward to hearing more from this band.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Give Me All You Got Mix

Here at Ear to the Ground, you never know what to expect. At least that is my hope. I build a playlist, and I let the Shuffle function do the rest. Sometimes, I want a particular artist to come up sooner, but it all seems to work out. Anyway, musically, stylistically, and emotionally – today’s songs cut a pretty wide path through the landscape of human interactions. From the breezy indie pop of Conway and an upbeat mega hit from Pharrell Williams to some harder edged music from Tomas Doncker and The Lies. Borderline creepy sweetness from Sam Davison to Deena oh so cheerful, let down song.

E2TG Dustin’ off Cobwebs…. Part I

Ug.. it’s been a month or more since I posted… due to circumstances yada yada…

I hope to be back up to full speed ahead soon, but I need to dust off the cobwebs to share some things – some long overdue.

First:

On February 14, still relatively new Nashvillian, Darrin Bradbury released his full length – True Love. Previously, I’ve called Darrin the best pure songwriter I’ve heard in a long, long time. True Love solidifies that claim, and if I must say, makes me look damn prophetic. Give it a listen, download, and name a good price.

If that wasn’t enough, just five days after the release of True Love, the prolific Mr. Bradbury released a live album produced by Spader Music.

Next up, I have a big congratulations to send out to E2TG favorites Miss. Shevaughn and Yuma Wray who officially became Mr. and Mrs. Shevaughn-Wray. Kidding about the name, but they Erin and Chris did tie the knot and will be embarking on a humongous honeymoon tour that will take them coast to coast – which is what they like, and includes a return trip to Nashville later this month.

In fact, the Nashville date March 25 happens to correspond to the release date of the highly anticipated new album, Lean into the Wind which will be released on Seven Dead Arson Records. Here are a couple of tracks from that album.

Next: It’s been a little since we heard from Ear the Ground Featured Artists – Dogs of Oz, but they are back with a new single ahead of one of the band’s long anticipated full-length album. I got to hang out with and see E2TG friends, Year of October (look for a new album from them in the summer. They are sounding better than ever and I can’t wait for the album. On the bill that night were a rocking Nashville Blues/Rock band called The Static Trees who sounded great and did a pretty sweet Stones’ cover (“Shake Your Hips” from Exile on Main Street), and a folksy/americanaish Murfreesboro band called Island Wren who are awesome and just released an EP called Fountain which you can get from iTunes and other places.
