Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Goodbye Possum Mix

Sad to hear about the passing of the one and only George Jones.  It’s been amazing to see the posts coming up on Facebook from all around the world and from creators and fans of so many different genres of music. He lived the life of his songs and he traveled many roads (sometimes on a Riding Lawnmower). He leaves behind an amazing legacy of song and lore.

We move on… and time is very short.
The Pre-Shuffle:
“The Shit Song” by The Imperial Rooster
“The Only Lesson Learned” + “What the Whole World Wants” + “White Blues” by Game Theory
“Salvation” by Langhorne Slim and the Law
“Hard Love” by The Mohawk Lodge
Shuffle after the JUMP…. JUMP

  • “Selfish Again” by Game Theory from Distortion of Glory (1993) – orginally on Pointed Accounts of People You Know (1983)

What a tough couple of weeks for the world of music.  I’m glad to have had the chance to feature so many great songs from the late Scott Miller’s band Game Theory.

  • “Open You Up” by Only Living Boy from Hide Nothing (2011)

I’ve been hearing the name “Only Living Boy” come up recently from my many New York/New Jersey friends, so I finally decided to see what all the talk was about.  I get it now!

  • “Low (Reprise)” by Ghost and Goblin from SUPERHORRORCASTLELAND (2013)

An instrumental reprise from the scary good New York band.  Super pumped to see a Nashville slot on their July concert schedule.

  • “White Night” by Charmboy from Let It Feed (2011)/The Appetizer Built4BBQ Sampler (2013)

Another great track off the superbly awesome The Appetizer music sampler. This Albany, NY band rocks out!

Before we get to the Daily Playlist:  Ear to the Ground sends out Anniversary to one of cutest and rockingist couples I know – Matthew and Livia from The End Men.

Time is short – so let’s get to it….

Pre-Shuffle:

“The Way We Move” by Langhorne Slim and the Law
“Gold Dust Woman” by Fleetwood Mac
“Long Harbour” by April Verch
“Buried in the Murder” by Lonely Wild
Muskegon Harbor” by Taco Land (I love this song!)
“Blue” by Joni Mitchell

After the Jump – we expose our Shuffle of the day and post our daily You Tube playlist

SHUFFLE

  •  Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off” by Fred Astaire from The Essential George Gershwin

I think we’re winding down our Gershwin songs in the daily Shuffle. But, fear not, I’ll be hitting Goodwill soon enough and who knows what gems I’ll find.

  •  “Out of My Mind” by Eric Burdon and The Greenhornes from Eric Burdon and The Greenhornes (2012)

What an awesome song.  Rock legend, Eric Burdon (of the Animals and War) teaming up with Cincinnati band The Greenhornes.   From the good folks at Readymade Records.

  • “Empty Aisles” by The Lucky Jukebox Brigade from Pretty Well Damned (2012)

I’ve been listening to this album a ton, and I have to say every listen makes me love it more. Musically, every song seems to explore a particular nuance of timeless music done in a distinctly modern sounds. “Empty Aisle” has a slight vaudeville feel to it while on other tracks we’ve heard 60s girl group and some sweet soul music. But, the real story here is not the diversity of the influences, but rather it is the way the band pulls this all together in such an awesome way.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – April 4 Memphis Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js <!– google_ad_client = "ca-pub-5465441380757075"; /* E2TG #2 */ google_ad_slot = "6306625404"; google_ad_width = 728; google_ad_height = 90; //

Thinking about MLK and the price of Freedom and Justice and the power of Love and Mercy.  For the record, the shot didn’t ring out in the early morning of April 4 (despite U2’s poetic license, it was the late evening). But I digress.

The awesome music continues to roll in faster than we can distribute it out to you.  Stay tuned!

First up, we had a whopping eight songs in our Pre-Shuffle Shuffle this morning.  Just to explain, I listen to music on my ride into work and then on my walk from the parking lot. It was taking to long to write a complete post about all of the music, but I wanted to take the opportunity to give some quick shout outs.  So I invented the Pre-Shuffle Shuffle which contains fewer details but 100% of the love.

Pre-Shuffle Shuffle includes: Colorado by way of Brooklyn Singer-Songwriter and CXCW Alum David Lott, Birthday boy Luke Anderson and his band The Danbury Lie with another great song from their ‘?’ album out now via Bandcamp. Built4BBQ band and friends of The End Men (obligatory The End Men mention) New Red Scare are a Rock and Roll band from Albany – Unlucky One is from The Appetizer Sampler.  More Gershwin. Connecticut prodigies, The Foresters with Mugshot from their self-titled EP. A track from the forth-coming album, Damaged Goods from veteran Canadian band The Mohawk Lodge. A classic track and one of my favorite songs by Nashville by way of Mobile, Alabama singer, songwriter and guitar god, Will Kimbrough going back to his This album.  And the Pre-Shuffle closes out with yet another great track from Taco Land’s awesome new album Pancakes and Pizza which is out now.

We hit the Shuffle, Shuffle after the Jump

  • “Lightnin’ Hopkins” by R.E.M. from Document (1987)

Time is funny and relative. By the time, R.E.M. released Document their fifth album and final studio release on IRS Records, they were just six years out from the release of their first single (Radio Free Europe), five years out from the release of Chronic Town and just four years out from the release of Murmur – their first album.  But, R.E.M. were already building an audience thanks to constant touring and the support of then powerful College Radio, and Document marked what seemed at the time to be a huge sonic departure from their previous releases.  It even had a hit single, The One I Love reached #9 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Us young punk hipsters kind of saw it as bit of a sell-out (I remember a friend of mine singing “It’s the End of R.E.M. as we know it…” on a road trip to Nashville around the time of the album’s release.  But, as I said, time is funny and listening to Document now, it just sounds like classic R.E.M. and has some truly great R.E.M. moments including Lightnin’ Hopkins our track today.

  • “Screwdriver” by Prince – 2013 Single release

As I said, Time is funny.  Who’d have thought way back in 2012 that some of the most exciting new music of 2013 would be put out by the (allegedly) retired David Bowie and none other than the Purple One himself Prince Rogers Nelson.  But, here you have it. Bowie’s music has re-energized his fan-base and Screwdriver is just a damn fine funky Rock and Roll song.

  • “The Middle” by Jenny from Heavy (2010)

We have another track from the Heavy album by countryish rock band Jenny from Calgary.  Did I mention that this band features drummer Spencer Kathrens who used to be in Inner City Elegance, which was one of the early band’s we featured on Ear to the Ground (way back in the Posterous days)

  • “Coffee Cups” by Langhorne Slim and The Law from The Way We Move (2012)

More great music from Langhorne Slim and the Law. The Way We Move is a really strong album, so check it out if you haven’t

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Regression: As a Path to Progress Mix

I haven’t counted in a while, but I believe there are over 50 bands/artists that we have featured here at Ear to the Ground.  This includes spin-off bands, solo projects etc. As we mentioned the other day, once we feature a band or artist here, we consider them family and try our dead-level best to keep up with their progress and new projects.  So far in 2013, the projects seem to be coming faster than our ability to keep up with them, but we’re trying… This week, we received an invite to the release party for the new (and long anticipated) solo CD by The Alternates front-man Spencer Livingston. Now we get word that preorders for Christopher Paul Stelling’s new album are underway. Not only that, but none other than Spin.com has the first single up

Listen, I pick the songs which go into my MP3 player (duh), and so I get the credit and/or the blame for the Shuffles that some up (even if it is the Shuffle Monster than actually selects the order and timing of the songs).  All I can say, is today we have a damn good selection of songs – new music from old friends, a rock and roll classic and other cool tunes to help brighten your mid-week.

As always, the You Tube playlist embedded at the bottom of the post includes the songs from the Pre-Shuffle and Shuffle (if possible) or at least a close representation from the same artist.

Pre-shuffle:   Another track from the Self-titled John the Conqueror album – brought to our attention by The End Men (there I said it – again).  We also have another great song from Ben de la Cour.  We have a track from Nashville band Kopecky Family Band’s 2010 album The Disaster. Special Note to the person who keeps donating KFB albums to Goodwill: 1. You obviously are either dying or lack good sense and 2. Please keep it up.  Our good friend, the audaciously talented Elwood Kuddles (aka Killing Kuddles) just released a new EP called Odd Man Out.  We have our first taste in a track called Save Me a Seat.  Finally, we close out the Pre-Shuffle with one of the two older songs released by The Danbury Lie just ahead of their new album ‘?’ – Rhode Island Summer is a great song that sounds nothing like the other music we’ve heard from this band.

On with the Shuffle – click on to read

  • “Buried in Leather” by Tex Railer’s Doomtown from The Battle of Bunker Hillbilly (2011)/The Appetizer (Build4BBQ sampler) (2013)

We continue to dig deeper into The Appetizer, the new Sampler from the Build4BBQ collective.  This time, we have the Albany-based Outlaw-Billy band with a track originally released on their 2011 album.

  • “Cruisin'” by Booker T and the MGs from That’s the Way it Should Be (1994)
  •

A Grammy winning rock instrumental from last studio album from the Memphis Rhythm and Blues legends.

  • “Polka De Nalgas” by The Imperial Rooster from Cluckaphony (2013)
http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/album=2203717135/size=venti/bgcol=FFFFFF/linkcol=4285BB/

New Mexico-based The Imperial Rooster are pretty insane, and they are insanely talented, too.  The band just dropped their new album Cluckaphony and it’s pretty intensely great.  Check it out above.  Polka De Nalgas is our first taste of the album.  If you’re too lazy to translate the title, let’s just say, Baby Got Back….

  • “Summertime” by Langhorne Slim and The Law from Summertime EP (Noisetrade – 2013)

Langhorne Slim and the Law just dropped a five song EP on the Noisetrade site (widget above).  The EP features three songs from the band’s awesome album The Way We Move, an acoustic version of another song and the title track which appears for the firs time.  The video included in the playlist features Langhorne Slim and the Law with The Lumineers doing one of my favorite Violent Femme songs.  Side note: The Law features drummer Malachi DeLorenzo who is the son of Femme’s drummer Victor DeLorenzo who was a student of the uncle of my pal, Rex Silo.  So there.
