Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – No, All! Mix

Back in the shuffle business after an absolutely incredible weekend at the 2nd Annual Safety Harbor SongFest.  Expect more detailed and official reports once I have fully recovered, but for now, let me just say I had a blast at this well-organized, artistically uplifting event and enjoyed some gorgeous weather.  Despite my peeling nose and flight delay coming home, I can strongly recommend fans and musicians alike check out this still relatively new festival.

“Heart Beats” by Hey Marseilles

From Lines We Trace. Hey Marseilles are an indie/chamber pop band from Seattle. Contrary to what some may tell you, there are no fiddles in the band.

“Kiss Me When I Get Back” by Tom Tom Club

From Boom Boom Chi Boom Boom. Chris, Tina, and company add some funky grooves to the morning shuffle.

“Can’t Seem to Make You Mine” by Alex Chilton

Taken from the Alex Chilton compilation 19 Years… This is a cover of the 1965 single by the American garage band, The Seeds.

“Crazy Love, Vol. II” by Paul Simon

From Graceland. I have no opinion about that….

“Conquistador” by Love Tractor

The instrumental rock band that was instrumental in the creating the vibrant Athens, Georgia music scene that spawned so many great bands.  This is from their 2014 comeback album Dear Aliens.

“No, All!” by Descendents

From the album All.  This follow up to the 1 second lead and title track expands on the theme stretching out to a full 2 seconds allows the band to really explore the overarching philosophy of “to not settle for some but to always go for All.”  Melodically simple (as I suppose a 2 second song is bound to be), the music nevertheless conveys a deep insight into the band’s influences from the punk and post punk era. The lyrics, “No, All!” while seeming self-explanatory bear repeated reading in order to fully comprehend the intricate nuances.  When Milo Aukerman left the Descendents, the remaining members formed a band named All which I got to see live sometime in 1991 or 1992.  It was a good show.

“2013” by Mothers

From Panamanian Times.  Another cool track from the Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen band Mothers from their most recent album Panamanian Times.  Some good vibey punk rock and a nice palate cleanser from the spicy Descendents’ track.  Not so much fond of the year, but I love the song, “2013”.

“Cusp” by Forebear

Cinematic L.A. Progressive Folk band Forebear return to the shuffle with another track from their self-titled EP.

“Killing What’s Left of Me” by Dead in 5

Dead in 5 bring some Detroit Hard Rock and outlaw attitude to the morning shuffle. It was a perfect bit of raw power to drive me forward toward work after a long and enjoyable weekend.  The album is called Schizophrenic Razor Project.  The graphics are awesome and the music delivers on the promise of the visual images…. CRACK!

“Trudy and Dave” by John Hiatt

From Slow Turning.  After the raw energy of Dead in 5, I really needed to come down a bit before I faced my workplace.  Who knows, I might have punched someone… not really, but I might have thought about it.  A great song from one of my all time favorite artists.

“Talking Thunderbird Blues”  by Townes Van Zandt

Taken from a 1973 live recording…  What a better way to get ready to solve the whole world’s problems (or at least my tiny corner of the world) then to listen to a song about drinking Thunderbird wine for the very first time…

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Losing Luster Mix

The week is rolling on…

A few notes:

1. Sad to report yet another incident of touring band having their gear stolen… this time it hit Two Cow Garage.  They are an awesome band.  If you want to help them out.  A GoFundMe account has been set up.

2.  I will be heading out around midday tomorrow for sunny Florida for the Safety Harbor Song Festival. Expect a bare bones shuffle tomorrow morning if everything goes as planned.  And keep an eye out for my reports from the front lines…

3.  Found out my good friends, Young America have their new EP featured on the front page of Noisetrade in the New and Notable section. Well deserved, and if you haven’t, grab that EP and show some love.

Let’s jump into the shuffle….

“God or Man” by Ivan and Alyosha

Another cool song from All the Times we Had….

“You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere” by Bob Dylan and the Band

Two things: 1. I think it is awesome that The Basement Tapes are getting such renewed attention. An incredible period of musical history…  2. Come down to Fran’s Eastside on a Wednesday night, and you might hear Darrin Bradbury cover this song… you can even ask nicely if he is in the right mood…

“I’m So Happy I Found You” by Lucinda Williams

An unfinished Hank Williams song recorded by the amazing Lucinda Williams… yep!

“One Voice/I Wanna Drive the Zamboni” by Gear Daddies

The closing track from the album Billy’s Live Bait, plus this track includes in the hidden bonus track that helped make this great band immortal, at least with hockey fans…

“If It Feels Good” by Michael Sackler-Berner

From the EP, Fragile Magic and available as Double EP on Noisetrade.  Some great modern Rock music from the Big Apple.

“Future 40’s (String of Pearls)” by Syd Straw with Michael Stipe

Syd Straw and Michael Stipe worked together when Syd was a member of Golden Palominos.  One of the many stand out tracks from Syd’s album Surprise.

“Where is My Mind?” by Pixies

Originally from the album Surfer Rosa. The song was prominently featured in the film adaptation of the Chuck Palahniuk novel Fight Club, but we aren’t allowed to talk about that… there is a rule apparently.

“Open Your Soul” by [debut]

Another song from their new album, Postcards from Berlin which is out now.  There is a great electronic rock sound here that harkens back to the heyday of bands like Depeche Mode, but the music does not sound dated or derivation but rather sounds fresh and modern.

“Feels No Pain” by Tim Carroll

Tim Carroll is one of East Nashville’s greatest assets and hardest working musicians. His long-running Friday Rock and Roll Happy Hour at The 5 Spot has become an institution.  He was featured on the cover of East Nashvillian’s Guitar Town issue.  Ear to the Ground calls him, “A consummate professional with a great clock.” (or at least we just did…  His new album, Pure as Coal, which includes this song, is out now and you should definitely check it out.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Still Covers the Sun Mix

We’ve reached the midpoint of the week…. let’s jump right into the shuffle….

“Feeling Called Love” by Wire

The second to last song from Pink Flag – the groundbreaking debut album by the influential English post-punk band.

“The Distance Between Us” by Marshall Crenshaw

From Downtown… I always thought it was “The Distance Between” and it is listed that way in some sources, but this was how it imported into iTunes and how it is listed on Amazon.  I also saw it listed as “The Distance Between Me and You”… whatever it is called, it is a great song from one of America’s best songwriters.

“Walkin’ Boss” by Sam Amidon

This is from Sam Amidon’s 2014 album Lily-O.  I got it off of a Noisetrade sampler for Big Ears Festival which being held in Knoxville this weekend.  Sounds like a pretty diverse and interesting festival. Sam Amidon is married to Beth Orton in case you need to know that.

“Tahquitz” by Whale Fall

The term whale fall refers to the carcass of a cetacean which has fallen to the Bathyal or Abyssal zone on the ocean floor and then become a complex ecosystem. The name highlights (and these are my words) the complex and yet organic nature of the instrumental post-rock music made by this L.A. band.  This track comes from the band’s second album called The Madrean which is an eight chapter instrumental story of the arid Madrean region of the American west.

“Good, Good Man” by Carl Anderson

Carl Anderson is a Nashville-based Americana singer-songwriter who is originally from Charlottesville, VA.  His new album Risk of Loss is due out April 7.  He just put a Spring Sampler out on Noisetrade which is where I grabbed this track which is from his 2013 album Wolftown. He has a CD release show at The Basement on April 6 along with Mary Bragg who will also be releasing a new album April 7.

“Don’t Wanna Die Anymore” by Ivan and Alyosha

From their 2013 album All The Times We Had, this may be the first song that turned me on to Ivan and Alyosha.  If not, it is certainly one of my favorites.

“Smoke (La Vie En Fumer)” by The Tubes

I’m going to admit right out of the gate that just about everything I know about The Tubes is from being a teenager and being fascinated by their music video for the song, “She’s a Beauty”.   That being said, this song which was included on the Feel Bad for You short songs mixtape is pretty darn cool.  The song was the lead track on the 1977 album, Now.

“Blanket of Sorrow” by Jason and the Scorchers

From Lost and Found – more proof that Jason and the Scorchers are one of the great American rock bands.

“Desperate Times” (Work Tape) by Will Hoge

Will Hoge is a Nashville singer-songwriter.  Like Carl Anderson he is scheduled to release a new album on April 7, and he put out a Noisetrade sampler in advance of that release.  The album will be called Small Town Dreams, and the finished product of this song will be on it.

“The Light” by Boy Named Banjo

Another uplifting track from Long Story Short.  I liked this song a lot.

“Walking in the Shadow of the Big Man” by Guadalcanal Diary!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);

Closing things out with the instrumental title track from the debut album by Marietta, Georgia’s Guadalcanal Diary whose name inspired a 1943 book and film… or maybe I have that backwards.  Guadalcanal Diary shows were always a good excuse for a drive to Nashville when I was in college.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – This is Definitely Not Offensive Mix

Some pretty remarkable things have been happening in regards to me music writing.  I can honestly say that I see completely overwhelmed sometimes (in the best possible way), and that I truly feel humbled. In the last day or so, I have seen words that I wrote showing up on Facebook posts and websites and other places, posted by people I respect a whole bunch. I am continuing to find my place in the crazy mixed up circus that is the Nashville/East Nashville music world.  I just recently got invited down to Safety Harbor Songfest this weekend in Florida to hang out with awesome people and hopefully write some words.  Gratitude is a overused, underappreciated emotion, but one that I am feeling in abundance today.  I am not going to name names simply because I will leave people out, but I know for a fact that none of this would be possible but for some of the people who read this blog in the early days and connected with me so that I knew I was not writing into an abyss (or to the disproportionate number of site visitors from Russia in those early days). Nor, would I have continued with the encouragement and concern expressed by some when I had to take an unexpected break from blogging. Nor would any of these good things be happening with the friendship and support of those who helped me through one of the roughest patches of my life.

To think this whole vast empire (sarcasm intended) was built on the foundation of a random shuffling of songs…   Let’s shuffle, shall we…

“Gator Lake Road” by Bark.

Another from the Tim and Susan Bauer Lee side project, Bark. The new EP is called Bark.  This song was their submission to Couch by Couchwest, and we have that video in our Playlist.

“Orchid Girl” by Aztec Camera

This song was included on the 12″ single of Oblivious and later added to the 1991 CD reissue of High Land Hard Rain.  It’s a lovely mellow tune from Roddy Frame and co.

“Psycho Street” by Richard Thompson

You ever get the feeling your neighbors are a little strange?  An odd and wonderful little ditty from Rumor and Sigh.

“American Tune” by Paul Simon

Originally from Simon’s second solo album There Goes Rhymin’ Simon, based on a melody from Bach which in turn was based upon an earlier work by Hans Leo Hassler.  A lovely addition to the morning shuffle.

“This Light is For the World” by The Waterboys

This spiritual song from The Waterboys’ 2003 album Universal Hall.   The Waterboys latest album, Modern Blues was recorded here in Nashville.  It is out in the UK and due for release in the U.S. April 7. The Waterboys will be playing 3rd and Lindsley on April 18, and I am looking forward to seeing them live for the first time.

“Rainshowers” by Jeremy Gluck and Robert Coyne

Another track from the Memory Deluxe: I Knew Buffalo Bill 2 album by The Barracudas bandmates Jeremy Gluck and Robert Coyne.  This song is a cover of a 1972 single by Canadian Rock singer Michel Pagliaro.

“Omnivore” by Black Iron Prison

Black Iron Prison are a metal band from Albany, New York.  This song is from a 2012 EP called Fear is Every Man’s Portion.  The current lineup of Black Iron Prison includes Elijah Hargrave who was in the E2TG 2012 Band of the Year Skeletons in the Piano (has it really been that long ago?).  I don’t think he is singing on this track, but a new rehearsal recording of this song is up on Bandcamp.  In any event, it was nice to have some aggression in the mix as I made my way to the daily grind….  Black Iron Prison is a reference from a Phillip K. Dick novel called VALIS.

“Who Writes Off Who” by Forebear!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);

Forebear are an Alternative Cinematic Progressive Folk Indie Rock band from L.A.  This song is one of the more metal-like songs on their self-titled record, and it was a nice segue out of the Black Iron Prison song into my work day.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Just Another Story Mix

#CXCW15 wrapped up this weekend….  Day 6, 7, 8 featured tons of great music… I feel like I am certain to leave some out, so please consider this a partial recap…  visit couchbycouchwest.com to experience or re-experience the whole thing. Anyway, some of the highlights of the last three days included: Nikki Sue and the Bad News, Young America, Modern Day Poets (which includes members of the now defunct band Cupla), Joe Nolan, Darrin Bradbury, Two Cow Garage with Todd Farrell, and a second video of Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray doing a Superchunk cover.

Way more great music than I could keep up with, but the good news I can go back and try to see what I missed, and so can you…  apologies to any FOE2TG (friends of ear 2 the ground) that I missed in my recaps…

“The Card Cheat” by The Clash

Yet another classic track from the amazingly legendary London Calling album.

“Oblivious” by Aztec Camera

One of my all time favorite songs, from the High Land, Hard Rain Album.  I love just about everything about this song.

“Hysterically Speaking” by The Colored Parade

The Colored Parade is a great Nashville band fronted by Andrew Adkins who was previously in the band Mellow Down Easy.  I got to see The Colored Parade live a couple of months back, and they were excellent.  This song is on the album And the Walls of the City Will Shake.  Check it out.

“Death or Glory” by The Clash

It’s a two Clash song kind of day…  this is another one of my faves off London Calling…

“Funky Avocado” by Michael Hedges

From the live album, Live on the Double Planet, this song was originally on the late guitar virtuoso Hedges’ 1981 debut album Breakfast in the Field. I was fortunate enough to get to see Hedges perform live, and even for a non-guitar nerd it was an amazing performance.  I’m sure the guitar nerds were going completely bonkers.

“Running Days” by Bonson Berner

L.A. band Bonson Berner just released their latest album called Reflection on March 10 on the Forty Below record label.  This song comes from their 2013 album Passport.

“Strange” by Boy Named Banjo

Another great song from the Nashville based band from their 2014 album Long Story Short.  Boy Named Banjo are competing to be on the bill at Bonnaro this year, so if you like what you’ve heard – check their Facebook Page to see what you need to do to help them out.

“Circus Stunt” by Burning Bridges

As I mentioned before, Burning Bridges was the project of Rob from The Danbury Lie in the days before The Danbury Lie existed.  This song (more so than the last Burning Bridges track I featured) seems like a missing link toward the development of The Danbury Lie sound we have come to know and love.

“No Good” by Banditos

Banditos are from Birmingham, Alabama.  From looking at their Facebook page, I see that I am late to this party (a diverse bunch of some of my coolest music friends “Like” their page already). This song will be on their self-titled debut album on Bloodshot Records which is not scheduled for release until May.  If this song can be used as an indication, well, then I may just have to add that album to my “Highly anticipated” list.

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Stand in Line to Die Mix

Greetings… I am in a much better place than yesterday.  Still a little rushed, but I can get through this shuffle…

First up my recap of CXCW15 Day 5:  I am way behind on my couchin’, but there was an awesome Irish showcase that featured the legendary Glen Hansard.  Plus videos from my friend Eli Rhodes who plays with Todd Farrell and the Dirty Birds  and also writes some amazing songs of his own.  Look for a solo record soon.  #E2TG favorites Tim Lee 3 return to the couch with another great video, and the closing video of the day came from Nashville’s own Will Kimbrough playing a song he wrote with Sam Baylor from Will’s legendary band Will and the Bushmen.  Sam passed away this week.  Life is short, ya’ll…

“This Ol’ World” by Young America

The dudes from Young America are currently divided between their native Georgia and Nashville, and still working toward the release of their highly anticipated album Good Old Fashioned Pain.  They recently released a 3 song EP preview/teaser of songs from the album.  This song is on that release.  The EP is called Pain, Rain, and the Mundane, and if you Spotify well you can now Spotify the EP over there.

“Feed Them Monkeys” by Eight O’Five Jive

Nothing says Friday like a good old fashioned jump blues/jive song… from the album Too Many Men…

“Mechanical Dream” by Artur U and the New City Limits

Another song from the album Holiday from Eternity.  The band is from Helsinki, Finland.  They have a pretty diverse sound which I like, and this song compared to the most recent song we featured, really shows off that diversity.

“Hard Times” by Syd Straw

Another from Surprise.  This one features a band that includes Ry Cooder and Jim Keltner, plus guest vocals by the incomparable John Doe (X, The Knitters, Flesheaters).  The song is a Stephen Foster composition.

“Queen’s Tattoos” by Aztec Camera

Originally the b-side of the Pillar to Post 7″, this song was added as a bonus track to the 1991 CD Reissue of High Land, Hard Rain.  Aztec Camera were one of my favorite bands, and I still dig listening to their music.

“Chromatic Death” by Stormtroopers of Death

A :45 second track from the album Speak English or Die (1985). s.o.d. was a hardcore punk/thrash metal side project started by Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian.  Yes, I’m awake and yes, my sinuses are clear now…

“Hand in Hand” by The Danbury Lie

The Danbury Lie right on the heels of their January release Scattered Moments of Connection, released a brand new album called Chose Your Delusion on the Ides of March (March 15 for those who don’t know their Julius Caesar).  This is our first listen to that new album, and I have to say, I like what I hear so far.  Good reminder about why The Danbury Lie are one of my favorites.

“Give Me a Reason” by Whiskey Shivers

From their self-titled album… The Whiskey shivers made big loud traditional founding folk n’ roll music…

“Ride Ride Ride” by Michael Sackler-Berner

A couple or so month ago, I randomly came across this artist’s music.  I was impressed that he had worked with Marshall Crenshaw, and then I heard his music, and I was really impressed. His two new EPs have been bundled up as Double EP, and the bundle can be had at Noisetrade.com

“Jolene” by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes

The legendary punk rock cover band plays the Dolly Parton classic from their 2006 album Love Their Country.  Coincidently, I recently watched the Nashville-theme episode of Drunk History in which this song plays a vital role…

“The Imposter” by Elvis Costello and the Attractions

Elvis.  Get Happy!! It’s Friday, y’all…

“Fried My Little Brains” by The Kills

From the 2003 debut album, Keep on Your Mean Side…  It has been over four years since we have seen a new studio album from this Indie band….

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Save a Few for Left, Too Mix

When you are having a stressful day, sometimes a Townes Van Zandt song is all you need to turn things around.  Other days, you need two Townes songs…  well today, for me, it is definitely a 3 TVZ kind of day… Fortunately, the shuffle obliged….

For the same reason I needed three Townes Van Zandt songs, I cannot add any commentary.  I apologize for that, but enjoy the music and if you are interested in any of the artists, look them up and support what they do…

BTW, Day 4 of Couch by Couchwest included some Nashville heavy weights like David Olney, Tommy Womack, Amy Speace, Wild Ponies, and #E2TG favorite Mark Robinson channeling the Possum on his lawn mower….

“It’s Your Grave” by Bark.

“Pretty Persuasion” by R.E.M.

“Tecumseh Valley” by Townes Van Zandt

“Carry On” by Humming House

“Right Wing Pigeons” by The Dead Milkmen

“Pancho and Lefty” by Townes Van Zandt

“Hobo Bill” by Townes Van Zandt

“Stolen the Moon” by Bob Walkenhorst

Bob Walkenhorst was the leader of a vastly underknown band called The Rainmakers…

“Long Story Short” by Boy Named Banjo

“Popskull” by Meat Puppets

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Swallowing the Ocean Mix

#CXCW15 rolls on… Day 3 brought tons more videos including some of E2TG’s all-time favorites… Among the many great clips were some from old friends like Sci-Fi Romance, MAKAR, and Imperial Rooster.  Plus an explosive clip from relatively new friends Two Mule Blues.  Head to the couch and visit couchbycouchwest.com  to get in on the fun.  By the way, they are still accepting submissions so get to videoing and get it done!

“Lost and Found” by The Naddiks

From my inbox via Australia (or vice-versa) come The Naddiks with a track from their latest release, a mini album called 21CB.  I haven’t had a lot of time to dig into the full release yet, but I dig this track. So good high energy punk, pop, and roll!

“(I Have) Everything I Need” by Beat Rodeo

Some time in the 80s, a bunch of punk rockers discovered or rediscovered country and/or roots music.  A lot of the music that came out of that influenced not only my budding musical tastes, but also played a large part in the development of what is called Alt-Country, Americana, and one of several other names.  Living in a kind of small town in the days before the internet, I was a child of MTV and college radio. I first came across Beat Rodeo on an episode of IRS Records Presents: The Cutting Edge.  Steve Almaas had previously been in the Minneapolis punk band Suicide Commandos.  He then worked with The Bongos and shortly after that worked with lead Bongo Richard Barone and producer Mitch Easter on a solo EP called Beat Rodeo before forming a band of the same name.  Home in the Heart of the Beat was their second album.

(me holding the Steve Almaas solo EP Beat Rodeo on vinyl)

“Friends” by Whiskey Shivers

Whiskey Shivers are from Austin and from their Facebook Page they seem to be staying busying down there with whatever is going on this week.  They will be in my hometown come September for the Muddy Roots Festival.  This great song is from their self-titled third album which is available currently on Noisetrade (as a free download (tips and shares encouraged)…

“Standing on the Moon” by Lera Lynn

Lera Lynn is a Nashville singer/songwriter.  I got turned on to her music when my New York friend Ben Arthur co-wrote a song with her on a drive from Nashville to Memphis for the Premier episode of Songcraft Presents: Songs from the Road which was hosted by Rob Reinhart from Acoustic Café and videographed by Matthew Hendershot of The End Men and Matt King’s Killing Streets.  This song is from Lera Lynn’s most recent album called The Avenues.

“7 Chinese Bros.” by R.E.M.

A favorite track of mine from Reckoning (but aren’t they all..).  If you haven’t check out Voice of Harold on Dead Letter Office and then try to listen to the opening of this song without expecting to hear Michael Stipe reading the liners notes of a gospel recording called The Joy of Knowing Jesus…

“Richland Woman” by Megan Palmer

East Nashville’s own Megan Palmer from her 2007 album Take You Away.  I dig this song.   I always love when I get to hear Megan play whether it is her own stuff or with Tim Easton or even one of her rare performances with E2TG Artist of the Year Darrin Bradbury…

(Megan Palmer with Darrin Bradbury at Foobar 3/15/2015)

“Twin Hometowns” by Beat Rodeo

A second and more rocking track from Home in the Heart of the Beat….

“Last Man Standing” by Bark

I remember a Facebook post when Susan Bauer Lee said she was taking Drum lessons.  Next thing I know, her and husband Tim Lee of Tim Lee 3 are forming a side project duo called Bark and releasing an EP under that name (along with a full-length TL3 album).   This is from the Bark EP and it rocks.

“Wind” by Artur U and the New City Limits

From Finland and off their debut EP, Turn Off the Light which was recorded at Bill Laswell’s studio in New Jersey.  I’ve been digging on this album since I got hold of it.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Gypsy Now Mix

Lot’s to cover…

Couch by Couchwest 2015 rolls on, and I am getting further behind on all the great music, but it’s a marathon not a sprint… or something like that… actually, I think it is against the rule to use a running analogy when talking about CXCW…  Day 2 included appearances by #E2TG favorites Batkhi Dahn and Matt Prater, and the day ending video featured East Nashville’s own Tim Easton playing Ray Wylie Hubbard’s guitar from the Netherlands or something like that.  I hope I didn’t miss anyone, but I feel like I did.  If so, I will make it up – as I plan to do a mid-week recap as well as a end of festival summary… UPDATE: I remember who I forgot – Tipi Valley – how could I?

Went out last night to see some friends play music…  Kiely Schlesinger was stunning as always, Lindsay Ellyn sounded fantastic, and Taylor Alexander from Young America (who released an EP yesterday and who was joined by Lindsay Ellyn) was awesome and the imagining of a Cher as a traditional country singer was brilliant.

In the opening mic that followed, I enjoyed seeing Fendrick and Peck, Eddie Crummer, Darrin Bradbury, and Zachariah Red.

Now, we have a shuffle to put on….

“Roll Bones” by The Record Company

L.A. Roots and Roll band off their 2013 EP Feels So Good… I just got turned on to them by my friend Sue Havlish, but they have a Wikipedia page and apparently their songs have been all over television.  I may be late to the party, but I am pretty good at catching up quickly.

“Come Around” by [debut]

Our second listen to another L.A. band, [debut] which draws influence from electronic and alternative music.  I dig this song a lot.  The album is called Postcards from Berlin, and is out now.

“Letter Never Sent” by R.E.M.

In the midst of several more recent songs, we have the insistent brilliance of early/mid 80s R.E.M.  From their second album Reckoning.

“Up is the New Bottom” by APE|MEN

Back to the new music.  APE|MEN hail from the “post Iron Curtain fringe of the European Union” and play an intriguing style of indie/alternative/indietronica. Whatever… it’s good stuff.

“If You Look for My Heart” by Ben Arthur

Ben Arthur is the host of the web series Songcraft Presents and had an op/ed in the today’s New York Times about the Blurred Lines decision. He is also an amazing songwriter.  His next album is comprised of “Answer songs” to various short stories, songs etc.  I’ve had a chance to give it a listen, and it is incredible.  I will be posting my take on the album soon… in the meantime, we have the title track (and our final song post) from his project “If You Look for My Heart” which was an novel and a genre bending album which I have adored.  The title track is mesmerizing and haunting and gorgeous.  (Video credit to Matthew Hendershot of the 2013 E2TG Band of the Year, The End Men).

“Pray For Me, Mama (I’m a Gypsy Now)” by Jason and the Scorchers

From the classic EP Fervor comes one of my favorite Jason and the Scorchers’ tunes (I have a lot of favorite Jason and the Scorchers’ tunes.

“Old Father Death” by Jeremy Gluck/Robert Coyne

Another track from the fabulous Memory Deluxe: I Knew Buffalo Bill 2 album.  I have really loved all of this album, and this may (for the moment) be my favorite song on the record.

“Under African Skies” by Paul Simon

From Graceland.  I treasure every opportunity to hear the incredible voice of Linda Ronstadt – here adding incredible background vocals which make this song for me.

“Golden Dreams” by Syd Straw

We close out the shuffle with another song from Syd Straw’s Surprise album.  Nice to revisit favorite albums and rediscover why they are one of your favorites.
