Lots of almost news to almost report… Expect to have more information about my and Sue Havlish’s WXNA show – Double Shot with Joe and Sue very soon.  If you have not done so, now would be a good time to follow our show on Facebook.

Also, expect more details about the forthcoming E2TG Five Year Anniversary Party (5/18 at The 5 Spot).  Just trying to lock down the final details.

Maybe, probably less soon, expect some information about the future of E2TG (it’s so bright, I have to wear shades – how is that for a relatively obscure – nearly 30 year old reference).

“Pinprick Eyes” by Ask for Joy

Ask for Joy is a Dream Pop/Shoegaze project of Aaron Rossetto of Austin, Texas. This song comes from the recently released New Private Window EP filled with forbidden pleasures. 

“Receiver” by Waco Brothers

The Waco Brothers new album Going Down in History is receiving widespread acclaim. Waco Brothers are fronted by Jon Langford from the legendary band, The Mekons. This is the first single from that album. If you want, you can check out this and some other Waco Brothers’ music on Noisetrade before you buy Going Down in History.  Really sorry I missed this band when they played Nashville late last year, but I am glad I saw Langford at The 5 Spot more recently.  Hope Waco Brothers come back here soon.

“Listening to Antique Pony Too Much” by Youngstrr Joey

As you can probably tell – if you stick around her long enough – I have a soft spot for the more experimental side of things sometimes. Youngstrr Joey from Glascow fits that bill pretty nicely.  It is experimental without being outrageously off-putting (at least for me).  Antique Pony is a Scottish band.  (I had to look that up, and now I have to check them out).

“The Fall” by The Hidden Agendas

Williamsport, PA is the hometown of Little League baseball, and the home base of The Hidden Agendas.  Glad to have them back in the shuffle.  When I’m not getting all experimental and weird, sometimes I just like some pretty straight ahead rock and roll – especially when it is done well. The band is hard at work on their new album.  Can’t wait to hear it.

“Seed” by Jonas Howden Sjøvaag’s Navyelectre

It seems like we have been featuring songs from Large Ensemble for a while, and we still have a couple more after this one.  I really dig this wonderful, original music from Norway.  Jonas Sjøvaag is a composer who has quite a bit of music out there. 

“Melissa” by Amelia White

Next up, a very beautiful love song from the  album Home Sweet Hotel, which is among my favorites of 2016 so far. 

“This Life… With You” by Hayes Carll and Supersuckers

Long running country/punk/rock band Supersuckers team with Texas singer-songwriter on this track from the Supersuckers’ most recent album, Holdin’ the Bag.  Yeah!  And yes, I freaking missed this at The Basement East Sunday… *shakes my head*

“Flood of Red” by Drew Worthley

Drew Worthley is a singer-songwriter the UK.  His new album is called Crucible.  This is a track from that album.  I really like this.

“Double Trouble” by Leapfrogtown

We have another track from Dreaming in Public the current album by this London based band.

I hesitate to report again about how awesome $2 Tuesdays are at The 5 Spot.  Derek Hoke and DJ Tim Hibbs throw a massive weekly party.  It cost you just $2 to get in and you can get Yazoo pints for just $2 all night.  I hesitate because it was packed out last night, and maybe enough people know about it… but hell.  For that $2, every single time I have gone, I have seen and heard some pretty amazing music.  Hell, $2 would be cheap just to hear Derek Hoke and his amazing band play a couple of songs.  Dead Horses from Wisconsin were awesome, Quinn from here in Nashville (and featuring E2TG Artist of the Year Jon Latham on guitar and BGVs) have an awesome sound.  Probably the only complaint I have (and I guess my age is showing) is that I left before the last band played and it was already midnight.  But, the young folks love it – ah, I remember… I remember…

Wednesday? What the hell is it?  Some call it hump day and celebrate having reached the mid-way through the work week, what does that say about us?  1. We are wishing our lives away and/or 2. We hate our week day existence so much and/or 3. We are optimists (I mean we would say we’ve toiled away for days and still have days of toil ahead).  Who knows? Wednesday are wild!  Wild used in the same way as “Jokers Wild”.  Wednesday can be anything.  Or maybe wild used in the sense of wild!

Welcome to the first ever Wild Wednesday Shuffle.  Make sure your seatbelts are locked and loaded… or whatever…

“Lucky” by The Dead Milkmen

How awesome!  The very first “Wild Wednesday” shuffle, randomly kicks off with The Dead Milkmen with a deep cut from Big Lizard in My Backyard. How lucky!

“Jesus Everyday” by Treat Her Right

How sad is it that this brilliantly satirical song could un-ironically be the campaign theme song for the top GOP candidate (whose name I refuse to mention)… Treat Her Right, as you may or may not know were a Boston-based blues rock band fronted by the late, great Mark Sandman who went on to front the band Morphine.  This is from the self-titled debut of the band which came out the year following The Dead Milkmen album mentioned above.

“Yr Hallway” by Youngstrr Joey

In the spirit of Wild Wednesday, we jump ahead about 30 years for this track from Glascow based – experimental musician, Youngstrr Joey from his album Grilled Wiig. And, yes all of those words are spelled as intended.

“Feels So Right” by Discount Ravioli

The debut from Discount Ravioli (Robin Schultz and the 21 Prayers) is a gift that keeps on giving. This is a favorite of mine from that album. The combo has just released yet another record (Ermilaw EP).  I guess it keeps the kids off the street. 😉

“Dirty Cop” by Ricca Vita

Ricca Vita is an eclectic electronica project of Timothy Joe Ryssemus who co-produced the new Zachariah Red album, and who also has the best hair in Nashville. This EP is available on Noisetrade where it is currently “New and Notable”.  Recommended to spice up your music collection.  

“Laundromat Song” by The Dead Milkmen

Wild!  Two songs from Big Lizard in My Backyard.  One of the coolest things garnered from posting this album is that I now follow Rodney Anonymous on Twitter, and his tweets are awesome.  I hope somebody on the new WXNA plays “Bitchin’ Camaro” (I will if no one else will), because back in the day on the old WRVU, I must have heard that song a couple hundred times.

“Nothin'” by Townes Van Zandt

We finally wrap up the early live recording of Townes Van Zandt with this song which I like a bunch.

“B.N.G.F.K.R.” by Smokey the Firebear

Six minutes of noise via the title track from Smokey the Firebear’s noisy album.  To bad, I couldn’t add this to the video playlist. 

“Clickin'” by Whistlin’ Britches

Proving that noise is not limited to teenagers from Connecticut – this mouth noise track comes to us via Music Maker Relief Foundation. Haskel Thompson (known as Whistlin’ Britches) passed away in 2011, and Music Maker Relief Foundation helped him to spread his unbridled joy with the world. 

“Out” by Mouth Reader

This final track from Mouth Reader’s Hands EP has been hanging out in our playlist for several months. You may or may not recall that the EP was released on Record Store Day as a limited edition Playable pop-up book. Mouth Reader are from Murfreesboro, TN.

“Weather Report Suite”  by Lena Horne

I actually may need some help with this one.  This was an unlisted track on my friend Ronnie’s annual mix CD.  According to Amazon Firefly, the track is as listed above.  I could not find this recording on You Tube, and my quick research created a bit of mystery for me.  The Grateful Dead have a 12 minute, 3-part song called Weather Report Suite, however, this track appears to be a cover of another Dead song called Franklin’s Tower.  I hope either Ronnie or one of the Grateful Dead fans I know will shed some light.   Anyway, the track is awesome.  I did find it on Amazon (UK) and it is titled as above and playing a sample proves it to be song I have.  Either way, Lena Horne covering the Grateful Dead is a pretty darn cool thing. Since, I could not find a video of this, I posted Lena Horne doing “Stormy Weather” which is cool, but still not this…

A rare snow day off work, but the shuffle must go on….

Had a blast last night before the winter weather descended… a night at The Family Wash for a pair of CD Release shows by two of my favorite East Nashvillians.  Amelia White and The Blue Souvenirs (tonight featuring Sergio Webb, Justin Amaral, Megan Palmer, and Ron Eoff). Amelia’s new album is called Home Sweet Hotel.  Stone Cupid (Julie Christensen, Sergio Webb, Chris Tench, Bones Hillman, and Steve Latanation). Stone Cupid’s new album is called The Cardinal.  Amelia and band were wonderful as always, and Julie and Stone Cupid rocked the house.

“You Left the Water Running” by Amy Black

Amy Black kicks off our Snow Day shuffle with a classic Muscle Shoals song from her Muscle Shoals Session album.  This song has been recorded by many people including Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett.  The song was written by Dan Penn, Rick Hall, and Oscar Franks.

“The World Belongs to You” by Indigenous Engines

Andrew Adkins has a new album out under his own name, and we will get to that very soon, but this is another track from one of two EPs he released in 2015 under the Indigenous Engines name.  This song is from the EP Werewolves.

“St. Sinner” by Exedra

Some newer music from our a E2TG favorite Jeremy Gluck.  Exedra features Gluck along with Darrall Knight and Mark Elliott.  The album is called Elemental, and the music is ethereal, dreampoppy, shoegazey, and all kinds of awesome.

“Sorry” by Youngstrr Joey

Our second listen to London based Youngstrr Joey from Grilled Wiig.  Really digging this music.

“Exotica” by Exedra

An instrumental tune from Elemental… takes me to a different place….

“Promise” by Leapfrogtown

Our second listen to London based Leapfrogtown from Dreaming in Public.  I like this band a bunch.

“Columbus Stockade Blues” by Richie Owens and the Farm Bureau

Richie Owens and the Farm Bureau are getting ready to release the follow up to Tennessee (from which this track comes) which will be called Dia de los Azules. If the first single (which was recently released) and the recent live shows are any indication that album is going to be a great one. This track is a civil war story about a Tennessee boy being held in a Union prison in Columbus, Georgia.

“Elevator” by Artur U and the New City Limits

This is, I think, our last track to feature from Holiday  From Eternity.  The “Earie” award winning Finnish band have promised some big plans for 2016.  “Elevator” is one of my favorite songs from the current album, and it has a pretty infectious groove to it.   

“Backbone” by Zachariah Red

Hopefully you read my recent review of Backbone. If not, it is now up on No Depression so give it a read.  This is the title track from the album which is now available on iTunes if that is your preferred outlet.  The live video (for a different song)  features Zach along with some of favorite Nashville folks, Taylor Alexander, Drew Kohl, and Lindsay Ellyn.

“Ode to a Friend” by Jon Magnusson

And we close out the shuffle with a moving song from a singer-songwriter from Stockholm.  His 3 song EP is called Dina drommar (with umlauts over the o that I do not know how to type).  This is the only English song on the EP. It is a tribute to a childhood friend who died at age 15.  It is extremely moving to me because I lost a friend at close to the same age – 35 years ago this month.

It’s my birthday, and I’ll cry if I want to…

My Birthday Week continues.  Last night included two stops along the way.  Week 2 of the Jason Ringenberg January Jam residency rolled on… This week guest was Peter Cooper with Chuck Mead joining Jason and Peter for a rendition of The Louvin Brothers classic, “The Christian Life”.  Ringenberg really seems to be enjoying this residency – I know I sure am… Next week’s guest is Tommy Womack!

From there, I headed to Mad Donna’s Loft where I caught the tail end of Simon Reid’s set which sounded great, and then witnessed two rocking sets from the always awesome Renee Wahl (who will be releasing some new music soon!) and Brian Langlinais (who will also be releasing some new music soon!). Both Renee and Brian were backed by top notch bands.

Now the “crying”: two late nights in a row has worn me out, but I will press on… tonight, the fine folks at The Basement East were kind enough to schedule the grand opening of their new Pub for my birthday.  So, I will be hanging out there this evening. The party begins at 6:00 with some awesome folks doing wicked cool covers beginning at 8:00.

“Emma” by Youngstrr Joey

In what is either a moment of serendipity or a moment of cruel irony, the first song in my birthday shuffle is by an artist named Youngstrr (sic) Joey.  This is some really cool music out of Glascow. From a forthcoming album called Grilled Wiig (sic). 

“Black Bruce Wayne Interlude” by Rich Robbins

A brief interlude from THE Black Bruce Wayne himself!  Off of Nimbus.

“Barracuda” by Heart

Back in the day, I used to get pissed off at “Classic Rock” radio because some of my favorite “new” music was not being played on the radio.  To be honest, a lot of what was called “Classic Rock” back in the day was dreck.  But some of it was truly classic.  I put this song squarely in the classic category.  Rock and Roll!

“Pinyin” (Auto-Tune Version) by Batkhi Dahn

Our last listen to the newest single from Batkhi Dahn.  This is the Auto-Tune version of “Pinyin”.  I do not usually recommend auto-tune, but… this…

“Fairweather Friend” by John Cale

From the solo debut by the former Velvet Underground member.  This is the only song on Vintage Violence that was not written by Cale.  The song was written by the legendary Garland Jeffries.

“Ode to Joy” by Joe Jackson

This is the final track on Joe Jackson’s latest album, Fast Forward.  Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy!

“Sunny Sadness” by Luke Saxton

A very long and beautiful song by this 19 year old singer-songwriter from York, UK.

“Everybody Knows” by FADES

And we close out today’s shuffle with our first listen to some new music from London.  FADES are an alt-rock band, they are releasing a self-titled EP in March.  I am digging it so far.  The only video I could find is a cover of The Waitresses’ “Christmas Wrapping”.  Enjoy! Merry Christmas!
