Monday Morning Music Shuffle – A Few of My Favorite Things 2013 Mix – Part Five

Stupid winter bugs…. well, I was out sick Friday – so no shuffle.  But, today’s shuffle includes music I would have featured on that day – plus a few more.   I’m actually going to be away for the rest of the week.  Ear to the Ground will return Monday December 30 to present the 3rd Annual Band of the Year award (for the first time not based upon a poll).

Sadly, Nashville’s Calicocat called it quits this year, but first, they dropped their brilliant Mighty Superfluous.

Look for Grace and Tony to continue to light things up in 2014. Their debut album November dropped in… well November. 

Reuniting with old classmates on social media can be a hit or miss endeavor. From acrimonious political rankling to endless game requests, there can definitely be a downside.  On the other hand, there are people I didn’t know too well in school who I’ve gotten to know and like through the web.  And then there is James Crawford who just happened to make one of my favorite albums of the year.

Prince and David Bowie released excellent new music in 2013. Go figure.

The Gypsy West kicked off 2013 with the release of the final part of their Accomplices trilogy. We loved it.

I saw Mission South at the Basement when I went out to see my friends Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray. They are from D.C. and pretty freakin’ awesome.

You and Me (glad to receive some music this year from one of the bands we’ve been following for a long time.  Also glad to have two songs in a row from that album in today’s shuffle)
 
I feel like I was late to the party with The Coal Men. If, like me, you are just now discovering this great Nashville band, Escalator is a great place to start.
 
Before 2013, I knew I liked Valued Customer, but I wasn’t completely sure why.  This year with the release of their truly mind-blowing/expanding Kalpa, I have become convinced that this wacky kids from Toronto are nothing short of musical geniuses…maybe just geniuses.
 
prattle on, rick is another Nashville-based “discovery” from 2013. Looks like I caught on just in-time for his fan-only release A Decade Begins and the album from which this track is taken, his extraordinary Some Quiet Majesty.
 
Likely, Taco Land and Tipi Valley have very little in common.  One is from south Texas and the other from coastal Wales. They have both been featured prominently on this blog for some time. And they both had impressive releases in 2013. In listening today, I heard something (subtle) to connect these two great artists/bands.  Always good to have long time blog friends/supporters in the shuffle.


 


Monks of Mellonwah are releasing their debut album as a series of EPs.  The first two parts – Ghost Stories and Afraid to Die were released in 2013.  The final part will be released in 2014.  Some awesome hard rock from down under.

James the Giant released one of the most beautiful/painfully touching records of the year.  The song featured today is dedicated to his brother who was killed in Afghanistan.

The Danbury Lie and The Imperial Rooster have just about nothing in common except that they both released incredible music in 2013 that I have thoroughly enjoyed hearing and sharing.  There will be much more on both of these bands forthcoming.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Chim Chim Mix

Have to make it quick today.  Nineteen songs in the Mix.  12 in the Bonus Mix and 7 in the daily shuffle.

First,  Nashville band Humming House, who are featured twice in the Bonus Mix today, have just released a video for the first single from their forthcoming album. “Fly On (Forever is Better With You)” is a great song, and the video features the parent’s of the band’s newest member – Leslie Rodriquez. By the way, her parents happen to be a couple of the coolest people I know. Watch the video, and I think you’ll get a glimpse of why I say that.

“The Wylie Coyote Cliffs” and “Bob Newhart” by Darrin Bradbury (from NEW!!!!The Almost Great Crepe’s.  Man! What a great way to start the shuffle… a pair of truly great story-songs from new Nashville resident Darrin Bradbury.  I hope all my Nashville music friends will check out this music and support his music.  Nashville is a songwriting town, and there are tons of amazing songwriters here, but there is always room for more great ones, and Darrin Bradbury is a great one.)

“Fall Asleep” by Jars of Clay (Noisetrade Eastside Manor Session.  The song comes from the band’s twelfth studio album Inland. The Eastside Manor Session doesn’t seem to available, but the single version of this song is up now – with all donations going to support relief efforts in the Philippines )

“That’s What I Want for Christmas” by Annie Sellick (from Let’s Make a Christmas Memory. Another track from this album. This song – a cover of a jazz ballad features noted Nashville jazz pianist Joe Davidian).

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Tender Mercy Mix

Well, well, well… we managed to stir up some controversy with yesterday’s Hall of Fame inductees due to our blatant omission of the Latin American singing group Menudo.*

*True except for the controversy and the fact that our omission of Menudo was not blatant.

As we prepare to induct the next three E2TG favorites into our HofF, we still do not have Menudo, but we do have a boy band of sorts to head today’s list.  (A Hall of Fame page is still in the works)

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Spice of Life Mix

As usually seems to be the case, I added a ton of new music to my active playlist last night, and not one of the new songs ended up in this morning’s shuffle. Rest assured they will turn up sooner or later.

 
 



What’s exciting to me about today’s shuffle is that every song in the mix is either new, relatively new or at least new to me. It also excites me that there is such an incredible variety to the music.

“March” by prattle on, rick. (another from A Decade Begins. My shuffle function has been in love with prattle on, rick lately, and I couldn’t be happier. There is a gentle uplifting quality to his sound that has been much needed.  A Decade Begins features an instrumental song for each month of the year. Here in Tennessee, March still has the potential for extreme cold, but we also get our first real taste of the coming spring. I felt that hope in this composition)  (Nashville, TN)

“Tha’s what She Say” by Wild Child (from Pillow Talk. A love the vintage sound of this song – complete with the doo wop harmonies.) (Austin, TX)

“Stuck” by The Coal Men (from Escalator. To my chagrin, I missed last night CD release party for this record, so think of this as a consolation prize. I’m continuing to love this album, and I encourage you – dear reader – to check it out.) (Nashville, TN)

“Thin Edge of a Knife” by James Crawford (from James Crawford. With release just a couple of days away, I’m happy another song from this remarkable album came up. There is a Tin Pan Alley quality to this song in particular – a lament of sorts for the things we used to do. I also see this album as another vindication for the openness I’ve tried to practice in writing this blog. With every bit of new music that comes my way – no matter how it gets to me, I have trained myself to be prepared to be blown away. In ways, I don’t completely understand, this approach has allowed me to hear some amazing music. Yes, occasionally, I will check out the music of someone who follows me on Twitter and discover it to be mostly poor quality covers of overplayed Popular songs. But to a much greater extent, I hear talented people  – putting themselves on the line, and trying to make genuine heart-felt music. So, when someone I know from my high school days says he is putting out an album – hell yes, I want to hear it. And in this case, I want to share it with all of you.)  (Nashville, TN)

“The Mountain” by The Black Market Merchants (from the Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen compilation. I think I first came across this hard blues rock band from NYC via Papa Tune’s blog. Even if that is not the case, the odds make it a no-brainer guess.) (New York, NY)

“Hope and Promise” by prattle on, rick. (from Some Quiet Majesty. More prattle on, rick. love from my shuffle function. This one is from the recently released new album.)  (Nashville, TN)

“It’s Not That I Still Love You” by Oh! My Blackbird (another from the Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen Comp. This alt-folk trio make music that is lyrical and fun) (New York, NY)

“Fuct Up” by Moovalya (from Moovalya. Sometimes you just need to rock really hard. You just do. You know me, I love all kinds of music, and I am a big fan of some really sweet, gentle, soft, melodic and beautiful songs. But, because variety is the spice of life… this band came to my attention  via a Twitter Follow, and this is the first song of theirs to show up in a Shuffle. You are Welcome.) (Phoenix, AZ)

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – FIGJAM Mix

“Better Than”  by The Coal Men from Escalator (I actually didn’t meet Dave Coleman front man for The Coal Men on-line, but it was through some on-line connections that I was at the Five Spot on September 19th to see his solo set and get turned on to his band’s music. Escalator has it’s official CD release party this Wednesday night in East Nashville.  I am really digging this CD, and I urge you to check it out.)

“Reberto” by Shake Jack from Reberto (Shake Jack are  from Argentina. They make some awesome neuvo-60s rock sounds.  Reberto is the band’s latest EP. It’s in Spanish, but cool music is a universal language. )

“Vices” by The Quick and the Dead from Easy Getting By  (I met Joey Mansman when he was in a band called Cosmonauts. I had the good fortune to interview them back when I actually had time for such thing…. someday again… He’s now part of a hard rocking, Americanaish band called The Quick and the Dead. They just released their debut record. “Vices” is one of my favorite songs so far.)

“Born To” by Jesca Hoop from The House That Jack Built (Okay – I don’t know Jesca Hoop. However, if she wants to “Friend” me on Facebook or whatever….  This song is from her 2012 album The House That Jack Built.)

“Your Dreams Will Always Follow” by prattle on, rick from Some Quiet Majesty (prattle on, rick is a brilliant Nashville singer/songwriter.  I think I was introduced to his music either through Twitter follow or through Noisetrade or Brite Revolution or else a little bird told me to check him out.  Either way, I’m glad I discovered this music, and this song is just sooooo gorgeous.  Thank you, little bird!)

Things are hopping.  Music is being made and released and for a part-time, amateur music blogger, it can be a bit overwhelming… but in the best way possible.  I can only say if you’ve sent me music in the past few weeks; I beg patience, and I promise –  I’m listening and will be posting soon…..

Today we have a mix of music to delight and inspire – but that is every day, but today is especially delightful and inspiring, but so is every day. Ah hell, comparisons are stupid. We have a great mix of music, and so, let us leave it at that.

“Wrong Way Street” by The End Men (Matthew and Livia are currently tearing it up through the European continent – from the picture there have been some amazingly cool shows including at least one with people juggling fire.)

“Rock and Roll is Dead” by Killing Kuddles  (From Odd Man Out. Killing Kuddles is spectacularly awesome, and I really want everyone to know it.  Check it out!)

“Good Soldiers” by Glory! (Some rockin’ reggae from the Gulf coast of Alabama. Positive vibes and groovy beats, y’all)

“I’ll Be Coming Home” by Brad Jones (Nashville-based singer songwriter who we have been featuring for the past couple of months)

“Wanting Peace” by The Coal Men (I saw and met chief Coal Man, Dave Coleman, last week at the 5 Spot where he did a solo set.  The solo set blew me away, and as I dig into this album – one of the ones I alluded to at the opening of this post, I continue to be impressed.  Expect much more on this in the days and weeks to come)

“The Ballad of Souls Departed” by The Dexateens (from Singlewide.  In the wake of the bands impressive showing at this past weekend’s Americanarama event, I’ve been loading up my playlist Dexateens music.  They have a brand new EP called Sunsphere which dropped today.)

“Poison” by Grayson Capps (This is one of the songs that Willie Sugarcapps did at Americanarama, and I had to get this added into my playlist. A spicy gumbo of New Orleans meets Nashville. Just the way I like it!)

“Dancing in the Bulrushes” by Jim Testa (from the Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen: Section 4 compilation)

“Manifesto No. 4” by Shooter Jennings (from Family Man.  Waylon’s boy done good)

“Weatherman” by Stoll Vaughn (I dig this. According to his website, Stoll Vaughn is a Kentucky born singer/songwriter and the co-founder of a Los Angeles based artist development company)
