Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Illustrious Illusions Mix

‘Tis a rainy Friday in Nashville, Tennessee.  Fortunately, the rain let up for my daily walk up the hill to higher ground. Even more fortunate, I got to listen to some killer tunes, and as always, I want to share them with you.


Pre-shuffle:

“Please” by The Vespers (awesome Nashville band who will be playing May 25th at the Eastside Hootenanny.  Those Darlins will also be on the bill that day because this is Nashville and that’s just how we roll)

“Hello It’s Me” by Todd Rundgren (The classic song from 1972)

” Singing Sunrise” by JENNY (who have a new album, Love and Politics out now)

“Hail Hail” by Shovels and Rope (the awesome South Carolina band from a Noisetrade tour sampler for their summer jaunt with the equally awesome Dawes – who we will hear from later in the mix)

“Rewind” by Kopecky Family Band (more good stuff from the Nashville band who were recently featured in the NY Times)


SHUFFLE – after the JUMP



  •  “Off With My Head” by Seth Philpott from Bad Hearts (2013) 


A week or so ago, I played the Acoustic version of this song which was on a Noisetrade Sampler.  This time, we have the full album version from the Bad Hearts EP which was released earlier this month.  I’m really digging this Nashville American artist, and I just now noticed that the Bad Hearts EP contains a duet with the always awesome Angel Snow (who has been featured on E2TG a number of times).


  • “From a Window Seat” (Live) by Dawes from Summer Tour Sampler (2013) (original verison is on Stories Don’t End (2013))


We promised you Dawes, and we have Dawes.  This California band is justifiably one of  the hottest bands around these days.  Noisetrade offers up a Live version of the first single from their current album – along with some more great music from Dawes and Shovels and Rope)

  • “Behave” by Year of October from Stories (2012)


Year of October are a Nashville based band.  They recently connected with me on Twitter, and now I’m regretting not catching up with them sooner. They offer up a unique mix of rock, blues and folk.  I love  the vocals and “classic” sounding music. They are gearing up for their first full length tour.  I have a feeling I’ll be playing much more from this band.


  • “Crowded Highway” by Harmondale from Spirit of 73 (2011)


Okay, call it a theme.  Another great Nashville based  artist making contemporary timeless music, and again I am late to the game as this song is from a 2011 album.  Really great way to wrap up the morning shuffle.

Nashville is home to a growing list of singer-songwriters who take the city’s propensity toward great songwriting and applies it a wide variety of musical styles. Kyle Andrews is a great example of this.

Minneapolis legend Slim Dunlap who suffered a devastating stroke last year has an incredible musical legacy.  Be sure to check out and support the Songs for Slim releases.

  • “Switzerland” by Bison (The Last Bison) from Quill (2011)/Inheritance (2013)

 
Okay I don’t have time to figure out the whole Bison/Last Bison thing.  But, whatever, this is a great song and a great way to close the shuffle.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – April 4 Memphis Mix

Thinking about MLK and the price of Freedom and Justice and the power of Love and Mercy.  For the record, the shot didn’t ring out in the early morning of April 4 (despite U2’s poetic license, it was the late evening). But I digress. 

The awesome music continues to roll in faster than we can distribute it out to you.  Stay tuned!

First up, we had a whopping eight songs in our Pre-Shuffle Shuffle this morning.  Just to explain, I listen to music on my ride into work and then on my walk from the parking lot. It was taking to long to write a complete post about all of the music, but I wanted to take the opportunity to give some quick shout outs.  So I invented the Pre-Shuffle Shuffle which contains fewer details but 100% of the love.

Pre-Shuffle Shuffle includes: Colorado by way of Brooklyn Singer-Songwriter and CXCW Alum David Lott, Birthday boy Luke Anderson and his band The Danbury Lie with another great song from their ‘?’ album out now via Bandcamp. Built4BBQ band and friends of The End Men (obligatory The End Men mention) New Red Scare are a Rock and Roll band from Albany – Unlucky One is from The Appetizer Sampler.  More Gershwin. Connecticut prodigies, The Foresters with Mugshot from their self-titled EP. A track from the forth-coming album, Damaged Goods from veteran Canadian band The Mohawk Lodge. A classic track and one of my favorite songs by Nashville by way of Mobile, Alabama singer, songwriter and guitar god, Will Kimbrough going back to his This album.  And the Pre-Shuffle closes out with yet another great track from Taco Land’s awesome new album Pancakes and Pizza which is out now.

  • “Lightnin’ Hopkins” by R.E.M. from Document (1987)

Time is funny and relative. By the time, R.E.M. released Document their fifth album and final studio release on IRS Records, they were just six years out from the release of their first single (Radio Free Europe), five years out from the release of Chronic Town and just four years out from the release of Murmur – their first album.  But, R.E.M. were already building an audience thanks to constant touring and the support of then powerful College Radio, and Document marked what seemed at the time to be a huge sonic departure from their previous releases.  It even had a hit single, The One I Love reached #9 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Us young punk hipsters kind of saw it as bit of a sell-out (I remember a friend of mine singing “It’s the End of R.E.M. as we know it…” on a road trip to Nashville around the time of the album’s release.  But, as I said, time is funny and listening to Document now, it just sounds like classic R.E.M. and has some truly great R.E.M. moments including Lightnin’ Hopkins our track today.

  • “Screwdriver” by Prince – 2013 Single release

As I said, Time is funny.  Who’d have thought way back in 2012 that some of the most exciting new music of 2013 would be put out by the (allegedly) retired David Bowie and none other than the Purple One himself Prince Rogers Nelson.  But, here you have it. Bowie’s music has re-energized his fan-base and Screwdriver is just a damn fine funky Rock and Roll song. 

  • “The Middle” by Jenny from Heavy (2010) 

We have another track from the Heavy album by countryish rock band Jenny from Calgary.  Did I mention that this band features drummer Spencer Kathrens who used to be in Inner City Elegance, which was one of the early band’s we featured on Ear to the Ground (way back in the Posterous days)

  • “Coffee Cups” by Langhorne Slim and The Law from The Way We Move (2012)

More great music from Langhorne Slim and the Law. The Way We Move is a really strong album, so check it out if you haven’t

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Auteur Couture Manure Mix

Time marches on… btw, as is often the case, the subtitle of the post has nothing to do with the music.  This time, it is just a random phrase that jumped into my brain. 

This morning, we had a pre-shuffle that included the likes of:

Dog Without Warning – a bay area band we discovered at Couch by Couchwest this year.  Check out their CXCW set in the Playlist at the bottom of the post.

Son House – the song we heard is included in the playlist below.

Tim Lee 3 who have been featured either pre-shuffle or shuffle every day this week – as they should be! The heartbreakingly beautiful Halo Days is in the Playlist below.

Calicocat – The more we hear from this Nashville band’s final album, the more we mourn the demise of the band, but we do wish the members well in their future musical pursuits.  The Video included in the playlist below is about the only one we could find on YouTube. (Although we found lots of videos of actual calico cats).

That’s right suckas, it’s time for your daily The End Men mention at Ear to the Ground.  Now that I’ve had the chance to meet them in person, I’m even more in love this band.  Into the Mine is a disturbing fable of possible abduction far below the surface of the earth.  Yeah!

  • “The Highway” by The Lucky Jukebox Brigade from Pretty Well Damned (2012)
After yesterday’s post, I heard from all four bands in the shuffle either by Like, Comment, Retweet or Favorite.  Which is pretty cool.  Deanna from The Lucky Jukebox Brigade wrote and pointed out that their album is available for free download on Bandcamp so I’ve included that link above. Another great track from that album. 

  • “Kanye Spaghetti Western” by NOSE! from 12in12x12 (2013)
NOSE! are also back for a second straight day.  This song is a brief, instrumental that somehow transitioned so well between The Lucky Jukebox Brigade and the next song in our shuffle that I had to go back and give it another listen.  The playlist down below includes the now infamous 2012 Couch by Couchwest footage that ultimately culminated in a massive police action which sadly was not shown in the available footage. Did I mention that they are from my hometown? I  don’t get to say that very often…

  • “State Hospital” by Frightened Rabbit from Pedestrian Verse (2013)

 
Glasgow alternative-rockers released their latest album in February.  State Hospital which was also the title track from the EP that preceded the release of the album.

  • “4th Floor” by JENNY from Heavy (2010)
JENNY is a Canadian band which includes Spencer Kathrens who was a member of the now defunct Inner City Elegance who were one of our earliest Featured bands. See the Bandcamp widget above to grab Heavy which I’m digging so far.
