This is the final track we have to present from R.E.M.’s second album, Reckoning. Some sources add a subtitle to this song (“I’m Sorry”) which coincidently references back to the first song in the shuffle..

Given David Letterman’s fondest for Warren Zevon, I kind of see this song as Ear to the Ground’s way of saying “goodbye”.

Well… It’s just Tuesday, and this is shaping up to be an incredible week for great music in intimate settings…  more on that later… we have a shuffle to put on…

“The Last Hotel/Some of the Dharma” by Jack Kerouac w/Al Cohn and Zoot Sims

One of my prized possessions is the Jack Kerouac box set of CDs which was a gift from my late brother-in-law who knew me and my tastes very well.  This is the penultimate track from one of the CDs, I’ve been spinning of late. For the Beat Poet within us all…

“Buy Eggs” by Circus Propaganda

There must be something in the water up there in Bethany, CT… must be… from the hometown of The Foresters (and featuring Evan and Hayden from that band) comes this band of young people who manage to make shopping for dairy products sound interesting….  (or this could be some hip teen talk for something besides shopping for dairy products… what do I know?)  Anyway, it’s a cool song… more to come from this band and the wildly talented young people of Bethany, CT.

“It’s Been Too Long” by Beat Rodeo

Another track from the great album, Home in the Heart of the Beat. I think I have one more song from that album, too (maybe more).

“Baby I’m Broken” by The Record Company

We have another track from the L.A. Rock and Blues band The Record Company.  From what I gathered from the You Tube video, this song was used in an episode of CSI.  Found out yesterday that CSI is ending its 15 year run this season. The shuffle must have heard that, too.

“Like Unto a Mockingbird” by John Hartford

Within the last several months, I have found myself from to the music of the late, great John Hartford, and I feel called to dig deeper still. From Tim Easton, I learned that John Hartford is buried along Gallatin Pike in East Nashville, Tennessee.  More recently, Hartford’s song “In Tall Buildings” has come up a number of times in unrelated settings.   

“The Thanks I Get” by Wilco

From a Rarities collection called, Alpha Mike Foxtrot…  The song was issued as a free download to owners of Sky Blue Sky, and was used in a Volkswagen commercial.

“Time After Time (annElise)” by R.E.M.

This is the second the last song we have from Reckoning.  A lovely track from the iconic second album of the band from Athens, GA.

“Timeline” (Cave Version) by Chappo

An alternative version (taken from a Noisetrade sampler) of a song from the bands December 2014 EP Celebrate.  Has circumstances have it, today is the release date for the band’s brand new full length album, Future Former Self.

“The Scene” by The Danbury Lie

Yesterday, we heard a couple of tracks from The Danbury Lie precursor, Burning Bridges. Today, we move up to the present with a track from the latest The Danbury Lie album, Choose your Delusion.   Maybe there is something in the water in the whole state of Connecticut, and maybe it’s been there for several years….

Thanks to my friend Too Much Country for including this song on the March Feel Bad for You Mixtape.  The Big Happy was a short-lived band that included the late great Billy Block who fought a courageous battle with cancer and passed away March 11.  The band also included Block’s wife Jill and the awesome Tom Mason and his wife.  The video comes from a performance at the Billy Block Remembrance and features one of his sons.   On a side note: as some one of Cajun descent, the term “Chank-a-Chank” really resonates – as does this song.

Once again, Noisetrade comes through to expose me to music I’ve been missing without even knowing I was missing it.  Whiskey Shivers are playing in Nashville tonight at The End (and join an illustrious list of shows I have to miss – damn you Nashville and your abundance of live music choices!).  But, if you are not otherwise engaged, you should go and tell me all about it.

“It’s not as thought I really need you. If you were here, I’d only bleed you.”  One of my all time favorite songs… Reckoning is such a great album!

The companion piece to “(scattered)” which we previously featured.  From Scattered Moments of Connection.  Clocking in at :22 seconds.  We take whatever The Danbury Lie we can get.  Speaking of which The Danbury Lie released this album in January, and they have already released another one called Choose Your Delusion which is in our mix.  The Danbury Lie are long time #E2TG faves and if you haven’t you should definitely check them out.  They are part of the small but growing Connecticut faction of Ear to the Ground favorites.

“Walking Out on Love” by Paul Collins’ Beat

From the debut album by seminal power pop band The Beat who later become Paul Collin’s Beat to avoid confusion with the UK band The Beat who were billed as The English Beat in the U.S. for the same reason [edited] and to avoid a threatened lawsuit by the American The Beat’s record label.  The two bands recently toured together recently playing on the coincidental name similarities. [end edit] This The Beat was formed by Paul Collins after the breakup of The Nerve and the short-lived The Breakaways which featured Collins and Peter Case.  This song was originally performed by the Nerve and originally recorded by The Breakaways before ending up on this album.  Green Day made the song part of their Broadway musical American Idiot.

“You Can Call Me Al” by Paul Simon

From Graceland and famous for the music video featuring Simon and Chevy Chase.  I have a story to tell about this song… a little while back, I went to the weekly open mic at Jed’s Sport’s Bar hosted by Lightning 100.  I was there to help celebrate my friend (an incredible singer/songwriter) Jon Latham’s birthday.  After Jon played the last song of the night (which was amazing), this song came on over the P.A. and an unrehearsed, totally spontaneous “flash mob” broke out.  It was a sight to see.

“Standing in the Doorway” by Soul Asylum

This song, from Hang Time, probably ranks high on my top list of favorites songs to air guitar in front of the mirror to…

“Nowhere” by Jeremy Gluck/Robert Coyne

Just when you thought, I’d forgotten your daily doses of Memory Deluxe…  Two things:  1. I repeat the shuffle picks which songs come up and in what order.  2. I really do have 750 songs in the active playlist and only about five left from this awesome album.  

As always support all of the artists you love in whatever way you are able… buy music, go to shows, buy merch, spread the word throughout social media.  There are tons of great artists out there, and most of them are doing for love but could use some money.  Peace out!

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Save a Few for Left, Too Mix

When you are having a stressful day, sometimes a Townes Van Zandt song is all you need to turn things around.  Other days, you need two Townes songs…  well today, for me, it is definitely a 3 TVZ kind of day… Fortunately, the shuffle obliged….

For the same reason I needed three Townes Van Zandt songs, I cannot add any commentary.  I apologize for that, but enjoy the music and if you are interested in any of the artists, look them up and support what they do…

“Lost and Found” by The Naddiks

 

From my inbox via Australia (or vice-versa) come The Naddiks with a track from their latest release, a mini album called 21CB.  I haven’t had a lot of time to dig into the full release yet, but I dig this track. So good high energy punk, pop, and roll!

“(I Have) Everything I Need” by Beat Rodeo

Some time in the 80s, a bunch of punk rockers discovered or rediscovered country and/or roots music.  A lot of the music that came out of that influenced not only my budding musical tastes, but also played a large part in the development of what is called Alt-Country, Americana, and one of several other names.  Living in a kind of small town in the days before the internet, I was a child of MTV and college radio. I first came across Beat Rodeo on an episode of IRS Records Presents: The Cutting Edge.  Steve Almaas had previously been in the Minneapolis punk band Suicide Commandos.  He then worked with The Bongos and shortly after that worked with lead Bongo Richard Barone and producer Mitch Easter on a solo EP called Beat Rodeo before forming a band of the same name.  Home in the Heart of the Beat was their second album.

“Friends” by Whiskey Shivers

Whiskey Shivers are from Austin and from their Facebook Page they seem to be staying busying down there with whatever is going on this week.  They will be in my hometown come September for the Muddy Roots Festival.  This great song is from their self-titled third album which is available currently on Noisetrade (as a free download (tips and shares encouraged)…

“Standing on the Moon” by Lera Lynn

Lera Lynn is a Nashville singer/songwriter.  I got turned on to her music when my New York friend Ben Arthur co-wrote a song with her on a drive from Nashville to Memphis for the Premier episode of Songcraft Presents: Songs from the Road which was hosted by Rob Reinhart from Acoustic Café and videographed by Matthew Hendershot of The End Men and Matt King’s Killing Streets.  This song is from Lera Lynn’s most recent album called The Avenues.

“7 Chinese Bros.” by R.E.M.

A favorite track of mine from Reckoning (but aren’t they all..).  If you haven’t check out Voice of Harold on Dead Letter Office and then try to listen to the opening of this song without expecting to hear Michael Stipe reading the liners notes of a gospel recording called The Joy of Knowing Jesus…

“Richland Woman” by Megan Palmer

East Nashville’s own Megan Palmer from her 2007 album Take You Away.  I dig this song.   I always love when I get to hear Megan play whether it is her own stuff or with Tim Easton or even one of her rare performances with E2TG Artist of the Year Darrin Bradbury…

I remember a Facebook post when Susan Bauer Lee said she was taking Drum lessons.  Next thing I know, her and husband Tim Lee of Tim Lee 3 are forming a side project duo called Bark and releasing an EP under that name (along with a full-length TL3 album).   This is from the Bark EP and it rocks.

“Wind” by Artur U and the New City Limits

From Finland and off their debut EP, Turn Off the Light which was recorded at Bill Laswell’s studio in New Jersey.  I’ve been digging on this album since I got hold of it.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Gypsy Now Mix

Lot’s to cover…

Couch by Couchwest 2015 rolls on, and I am getting further behind on all the great music, but it’s a marathon not a sprint… or something like that… actually, I think it is against the rule to use a running analogy when talking about CXCW…  Day 2 included appearances by #E2TG favorites Batkhi Dahn and Matt Prater, and the day ending video featured East Nashville’s own Tim Easton playing Ray Wylie Hubbard’s guitar from the Netherlands or something like that.  I hope I didn’t miss anyone, but I feel like I did.  If so, I will make it up – as I plan to do a mid-week recap as well as a end of festival summary… UPDATE: I remember who I forgot – Tipi Valley – how could I?

Went out last night to see some friends play music…  Kiely Schlesinger was stunning as always, Lindsay Ellyn sounded fantastic, and Taylor Alexander from Young America (who released an EP yesterday and who was joined by Lindsay Ellyn) was awesome and the imagining of a Cher as a traditional country singer was brilliant.

In the opening mic that followed, I enjoyed seeing Fendrick and Peck, Eddie Crummer, Darrin Bradbury, and Zachariah Red.

Now, we have a shuffle to put on….

“Roll Bones” by The Record Company

L.A. Roots and Roll band off their 2013 EP Feels So Good… I just got turned on to them by my friend Sue Havlish, but they have a Wikipedia page and apparently their songs have been all over television.  I may be late to the party, but I am pretty good at catching up quickly.

“Come Around” by [debut]

Our second listen to another L.A. band, [debut] which draws influence from electronic and alternative music.  I dig this song a lot.  The album is called Postcards from Berlin, and is out now.

“Letter Never Sent” by R.E.M.

In the midst of several more recent songs, we have the insistent brilliance of early/mid 80s R.E.M.  From their second album Reckoning.

“Up is the New Bottom” by APE|MEN

Back to the new music.  APE|MEN hail from the “post Iron Curtain fringe of the European Union” and play an intriguing style of indie/alternative/indietronica. Whatever… it’s good stuff.

“If You Look for My Heart” by Ben Arthur

Ben Arthur is the host of the web series Songcraft Presents and had an op/ed in the today’s New York Times about the Blurred Lines decision. He is also an amazing songwriter.  His next album is comprised of “Answer songs” to various short stories, songs etc.  I’ve had a chance to give it a listen, and it is incredible.  I will be posting my take on the album soon… in the meantime, we have the title track (and our final song post) from his project “If You Look for My Heart” which was an novel and a genre bending album which I have adored.  The title track is mesmerizing and haunting and gorgeous.  (Video credit to Matthew Hendershot of the 2013 E2TG Band of the Year, The End Men).

Another track from the fabulous Memory Deluxe: I Knew Buffalo Bill 2 album.  I have really loved all of this album, and this may (for the moment) be my favorite song on the record.

“Under African Skies” by Paul Simon

From Graceland.  I treasure every opportunity to hear the incredible voice of Linda Ronstadt – here adding incredible background vocals which make this song for me.

“Golden Dreams” by Syd Straw

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – R-E-A-C-T Mix

“There’s a splinter in your eye…”    Todays shuffle has it all (or it has a bunch of it, or at least some of it….):  Old and new friends of E2TG, heroes, legends! Crossing stylistic boundaries without any hesitation! Crossing decades of music like we have a freaking time machine!  This is what we do at Ear to the Ground!     Look, my viral infection is lingering, yesterday’s 60 degree high is in free-fall, it is a sucky rainy day that is supposed to give way to all kinds of frozen junk which this Southern city is ill equipped to handle, and so I am just trying to maintain the kind of enthusiasm this eclectic and fine mix of music deserves.  Sorry for any unnecessary hyperbole or manic-ness of the above introduction….

“Flicker and Flame” by The Ghoul Goes West

The second song in as many days from this band from Arkansas. When they e-mailed me, they said they were “an unknown, under listened to band” – which happens to be my stock and trade.  Plus their name is The Ghoul Goes West! Plus, the album is called Ghosts and Bones and Blood and Things!  But the kicker was they have a great sound and some really good songs. 

“Somethin’ Else” by Eddie Cochran

1959 – Eddie Cochran.  The b-side was titled “The Boll Weevil” song.  Did I mention it is Eddie Cochran?

“Cheshire” by American Scarecrows

By way of a Noisetrade sampler, American Scarecrows are from Minneapolis and this is one of my favorite songs off that release. The song is the second track on the band’s 2014 album Yesteryear.

“Shock the World” by Tom Tom Club

Another track from Boom Boom Chi Boom Boom.  Chris and Tina and company shock the world with their killer rhythms.

“Carryin’ on This Way” by Dale Watson

The founding father of Ameripolitan music from his 2010 album, Carryin’ On. Sometimes you have to give yourself a good talking to…

Before the lie… The Danbury Lie that is…  Some pre-history of one of Ear to the Ground’s favorite artists… in the form of some wicked alternative metal from the eponymously titled album.

“Palace” by The Antlers

Deftly, our shuffle transitions from the noisy metal of Burning Bridges to the smooth dream pop sounds of this Brooklyn-based band and the lead track from their most recent album Familiars.  

“Change the Tune” by Jason and the Scorchers

Similar in theme to the Dale Watson song.  Nashville’s Jason and the Scorchers are up next with a track from their album Lost and Found.

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Alone in a Crowd Mix

The end of a long strange week… we have a pretty nifty mix of old and new music of various styles and moods and subjects… all making a cohesive morning shuffle…

“Painted On Attitude” by T. Hardy Morris

An October 2014 single from T. Hardy Morris of Dead Confederate.  He is part of the new project Diamond Rugs along with members of Deer Tick and Steve Berlin of Los Lobos.  Diamond Rugs has a Noisetrade release that includes this track and some music from Deer Tick.

“Blue Light of the Fire” by Heather Powell

Heather Powell’s new album A Haze of Grays and Blues is out (this week).  This song is from her previous album Believe it to Life. A new version of this song (same lyrics,  different tune) is on the new album as “Blue Light”.  The video included is a recent live version of that new song.

“Lost in the Cosmos (Song for Chris Bell)” by Sons of Bill

A song for the late Big Star member whose classic solo album was released some 14 years after his tragic 1978 death at age 27.  The song is on Love and Logic the most recently album by Virginia band Sons of Bill.

“The Long Run Out” by The Unforgiven

You don’t know how good it feels to say a new song from The Unforgiven.  The Unforgiven was an 80s band that by all rights should have been huge.  They had the look and the sound, they were larger than life and seemed to have stepped right out of a Spaghetti Western. To call them a Big Guitar band is an amazing understatement.  Circumstances being what they were and are, their sole, self-titled album ended up being their only release.  In 2012, the band reformed for a show at Stagecoach Festival and in 2014 their album was finally given a new release.  This song was a bonus track recorded around the time of the 2012 reunion, and it is pure The Unforgiven.  If you (like way too many) missed out on this band the first time around or haven’t had a heard them in a long time, climb on board.  Hang ’em High!

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Changing Everything Mix

I am ridiculously short on time, and I will be out of town the next two days so no shuffles until Thursday.  I am going to be quick, but if you have more time than I do, please give these great songs the attention they deserve.  I found videos for most of the songs.  The only one I didn’t find was the Mothers song, and I will put a link to their bandcamp page so you can listen and/or buy.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Another Magic Mart Mix

“Drinkin’ In My Sunday Best” by Maria McKee

From the very first time I heard Lone Justice, I knew Maria McKee was something special.  This song is off of her solo debut, and it was a fine burst of energy to start my morning.

“Little America” by R.E.M.

R.E.M.’s second full-length album Reckoning ends with their “road” song. “Jefferson, I think we’re lost…”

“More Than This” by Roxy Music

The emotional connections I have made to this song are numerous and deep.  This is the first track on the classic Avalon album.  For some reason, this song brings to mind a hungover/still buzzing sunrise at the end of a wild night.

“Love On Low-Fi” by J.R. Wyatt

Another track from J.R. Wyatt’s excellent solo record, Empty Room Sessions.  I dig the songwriting and the voice of this song Nashville songwriter.  Glad I got to see him on Tuesday at The 5 Spot playing with a full band.

“Natural Disaster” by Gretchen Peters

Speaking of fine Nashville songwriters.  Gretchen Peters is a living legend.  Another stand out track from her album Hello Cruel World.

“The Boogie Man” by The Cadillacs

I think this one has been creeping (pun partially intended) around the Playlist since Halloween, but really is it ever not the right time for the Boogie Man?

“Can’t Leave Well Enough Alone” by Matt Prater

This is an awesome track off the forthcoming Tables and Chairs by Alabama based songwriter/performer Matt Prater.  Recommended if you dig great songs and REAL Country music.

“Metropolis” by The Belle Brigade

The Belle Brigade are an LA Brother and Sister duo.  This is from their 2014 album Just Because.  This was on a friend’s annual mix CD, and I really dig their sound, and I definitely want to check out more.

“On and On” by Joey Bada$$ (feat. Maverick Sabre and Dyemond Lewis)

How about some Hip Hop sounds to take us out of this Thursday Shuffle.  Brooklyn-based Joey Bada$$ released his latest album B4.Da.$$ just about a week ago.  This song is on that album.  I am by no means an expert on Hip Hop music, but I also am not willing to dismiss it all without listening.  I didn’t really expect to, but I do like this a great deal.
