Hey, I needed to get some “stuff done” today, and I decided to shuffle some music while I got the “stuff done”.  So, welcome to a rare Saturday shuffle.  Limited descriptions  – just a ton of cool tunes.

As I mentioned yesterday, E2TG’s reigning Artist of the Year was selected by Nashville’s Lightning 100 to be their Artist of the Week.  As part of that, he played a free show yesterday evening at Soulshine Pizza, and he played one of the best shows I have ever seen him put on. I could not have been more proud.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Los Angels Mix

Welcome back.  Well, this should be the last late post of the week.  Plus, my new bluetooth earphones came in today. So the shuffle will be continue onward unabated.

So some of you have asked about the integrity of the E2TG “Earie” Awards.  The ballots are stored in a secret and remote location watched over by a team of trained seals. Unlike some of the fancy awards, we could not afford a Certified Accountant to monitor our processes, so we went with a certifiable accountant.  Did I ever mention that I am an accountant.  Seriously though, the whole process takes place inside my head, and that is as remote and secret as it gets.

Today’s award:  I’m calling it the “Mott the Hoople” Award aka the “All the Young Dudes” Award.

The premise:  No premise really, just an award to some of the young dudes who made cool music in 2015.  (keep in mind, I’m getting up there in age so “young” is a term that is more broadly defined everyday, but these dudes qualify by my standards…

The Award goes to:

1.  Josh Morris – When (former E2TG Featured Artist) And the Giraffe parted ways, Josh Morris turned his attention to his solo work.  Green Fields was released early in the year,  Morris has new music in the works that promises a change in direction from Green Fields.  In addition, Morris is quickly making a name for himself as a go-to producer.

2.  James Tomberlin – When James Tomberlin left town to return to school, he left a unique but significant hole in the Nashville songwriting community.  Fortunately, before he left town, he recorded a album, Still Life With Orange which by the way was produced by Josh Morris.  I, for one, though, miss his arcane and sophisticated sense of humor.

3.  Patrick Kinsley – For a Thousand Miles is flat out one of my favorite albums of 2015.  It is an excellent showcase for the mass of contradictions that is Patrick Kinsley.  Earnest heartland flavored rock and roll music with simple but intelligent lyrics and a deep emotional resonance.  The album is a journey.

4.  Zachariah Red –  The new Zach Red album is due out just after the first of the year, and I can’t wait.  But, his single, “40 Miles” was released just in time for the totally fictional “Earie” deadline.  Bringing the wisdom and work ethic of a Wisconsin carpenter, the energy of a former punk rocker, and songwriting chops, Zachariah Red plays real country music effortlessly.

(There a couple of other people who might qualify for this award, but I may have something else in mind for them)….

To the shuffle:

“Introduction of Band” by Darrin Bradbury

2014 Artist of the Year and 2015 “Earie” award winner, Darrin Bradbury introduces his band on the live album, Tur-Lyfe: A Live Recording of Unfortunate Events.  At the time was called Los Angels.

“The Grand Optimist” by City and Colour

From that mega-download of World Cafe Sessions comes City and Colour  with a song from their 2011 album, Little Hell.

“Sing Along” by Robert Ellis

I first saw Robert Ellis at American Fest a few years ago.  Later, he opened for Richard Thompson at City Winery, and then I saw him as part of Traveler at their Basement East show earlier this year.  This is one of my favorite songs of his.

“Watch Dog” by Amy Black

From her Muscle Shoals Sessions albun, Amy Black – covering a song which Etta James recorded on her 1968 album Tell Mama which was recorded by FAME Studios.

“Boss Board” by Burt Rocket

Some hot, surf music from Norway!

“Houses on the Hill” by Ryan Adams

From Life After Deaf the live Ryan Adams boxset, we have a moving version of a song that originally appeared on the second Whiskeytown album.

“All This Wandering Around” by Ivan and Alyosha

From their album, It’s All Just Pretend.  More great music from the Seattle band.

“Peter Gunn” by Roy Buchanan

Blues guitarist Pat Buchanan with his take on the Henry Mancini penned theme from “Peter Gunn”.

“Hearts Too Heavy” by John Moreland

High on Tulsa Heat is one of the best albums of 2015 and John Moreland just may be one of this generations greatest songwriters.

Here we go… another week!

Kind of a low-key weekend.  Got to hang out with some of the folks from Nashville’s newest radio station: WXNA-LPFM on Saturday, and I picked up my t-shirt and tote bag.  Things seem to be rolling along. The studio will be in the former location of Thirty Tigers above Grimey’s and The Basement.

Last night, I went to the Basement East where East Nashville Songwriters Club made their debut in the new location with sets by Allen Thompson, Jay Rutherford (of Los Colognes) and Elise Davis.  Cool night of music!

Speaking of cool… the temperatures were in the 30s this morning.  Which makes the first song of the shuffle appropriate even is weather isn’t exactly what the song is about.

“Cold Front” by Webb Wilder

Another toe-tapping rocker from Webb’s album Hybrid Vigor.

“The Locked Room” by Dan Martin

The strange and often random hand of fate… my friend Mary met Dan Martin at a David Olney show at The 5 Spot, and she told him that he should give me a CD, and he did.  I now count myself as a big fan of Dan Martin from Oklahoma.

“When the World’s Against Me” by The Colored Parade

A nice catchy number from …And the Walls of the City Will Shake…  by Andrew Adkins’ old band, The Colored Parade.  Andrew had a song featured in the trailer for the new documentary about Tower Records.

“Losing Sleep Tonight” by John Moreland

Another great song from one of the best albums of this year, High on Tulsa Heat by one of the best songwriters of our time.

“Pulling Your Sword Out of the Devil’s Back” by Brock Zeman

An unconventional song about songwriting that manages to be awesome without any of that fancy song stuff like Choruses and Bridges and ever a consistent melody.  Looking forward to Brock Zeman’s return to Nashville in early November. As I understand it, there will be a couple of chances to catch him while he is in town.  I will have details soon. This is the title track from his latest album.

“The Rain Song” by The Shakers

A mind-blowingly good Led Zep cover from Nashville’s groundbreaking Southern Gothic Psych-Folk band, The Shakers.  From their album, Songs From Beneath the Lake.

“What’s My Scene” by Hoodoo Gurus

And we close out this Monday shuffle with a song that decades later still gets me pumped up every time I hear it.  From Blow Your Cool! window.amznpubstudioTag = “eartothegro00-20”;

Saturday Morningish Music Shuffle – Spring Cleaning Mix

Be sure to “Like” Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

A rare Saturday shuffle to make up for not posting yesterday… life happens – you know….

It’s been a very interesting week in many ways.  Musically, since we last connected, Thursday night, I went to week 3 of 5 of Campfire Propaganda.  It was a blast with the usual suspects – who are some pretty awesome songwriters: Brian Wright, Tim Easton, Megan Palmer, Darrin Bradbury, and Nellie Clay plus this week joined by Matt Haeck.  Then, I headed to The Family Wash to see Bark (Tim and Susan of Tim Lee 3) play an awesome set and then back up Jim Mize along with Laurie Stirratt.

Last night, it was the Jon Latham CD Release Show at Belcourt Taps.  Darrin Bradbury opened.  A really fun time.  Jon was joined by Haley Dreis, Josh Morris, Shawn Conerton, and Sean Quinn. And he even asked me to emcee the show.  There was tons going on musically around Nashville last night, and I though I don’t like that I missed some of the things that I missed, I know I was at the right place.

Speaking of Jon Latham.  In case you missed it, I wrote some words about Real Bad News – his brand new album.  You can check it out HERE.

Just some tunes I listened to while I did some spring cleaning this morning. And, the answer is yes, I do know that it is mid-October.  What can I say, it has been a crazy, busy summer…

I am not going to comment on the songs – many I found the actual song for the Video Playlist.  If something interests you, and you need help finding out more – shoot me a line and I will tell you all I know.  Meanwhile, sit back and enjoy and maybe if you need to do some spring cleaning you can listen while you clean – like I did.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Put the Blame on VTR Mix

Songs of the Road is a pretty awesome concept – take a songwriter on a relatively short road trip, have them write a song along the way, and then record the song and play it live that same day.  SongCraft Presents and Acoustic Café have teamed up with Ford Motor Company to make this happen.  I had the great pleasure of premiering the latest session on No Depression this morning.  I really hope you will check it out.  HERE.  Ear to the Ground readers may recognize SongCraft Present’s Ben Arthur – who works with the featured songwriters.  Ben’s own music has been featured here several times.  Matthew Hendershot of our very good friends, The End Men also works on the video side of the project.

Today’s shuffle is a real mixed bag…  so let’s get to it….

“Spider Queen Take 2” by The Hidden Agendas

Okay I don’t know if Take 2 is part of the title or just how the file was labeled. I think the important thing here is the Spider Queen part. The Hidden Agendas are a Pennsylvania Rock and Roll band who made through the disorganized mess that is my E-Mail.  I really like this and can’t wait to here more.  The video we found is a performance by the band doing a Lady Gaga cover.

“Skip the Line” by Sugar and the Hi Lows

Sugar and the Hi Lows are a band we featured on Ear to the Ground a few years ago. They are a duo made up of Amy Stroup and Trent Dabbs – long time Nashville artists who were part of Ten out of Tenn collective. Their latest album High Roller was released back in June, and around that time, Noisetrade released a bunch of older music including this song from the band’s 2012 self-titled album.

“Sound of Erasing” by Rubblebucket

From the album Survival Sounds which was released back in May.  Rubblebucket keep showing up on multi-artist compilations that Noisetrade puts outs. I think this one came from a compilation for the Hangout Music Fest, but don’t quote me on that.  They are from Brooklyn, and I dig what they are doing.

“If You Want Love” by Christopher Aaron Slade

Another that came to me via e-mail.  We are been featuring Christopher Aaron Slade for several months.  It is gloriously fun music.  Trivia:  When I was saving the MP3s to my computer, I accidently typed Christopher Allen Slade.  So, every time a song comes up, I have to mentally correct it before I write the blog post.  And yes, I know I could just correct the file, but I am too damn lazy for that.

“Tonight I Feel Like Crying” by Tom Schreck

A day with a Tom Schreck song is a good day.  This is one of my favorites of his.  I have a lot of favorites of his but out of all of those favorites this is definitely one.  By the way, we’ve included Schreck’s cover of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” just because we have not posted that video in a while.

“Video Killed the Radio Star” by Ben Folds Five

Nashville’s Ben Folds Five with their cover of The Buggles hit song.  The Buggles original was the very first music video played on MTV.  Does anyone know what the last music video played on MTV was?

“No Hidin’ Place” by Cool John Ferguson

Another from the Music Makers Relief Foundation.  Cool John Ferguson is a self-taught guitar player, who learned to play the guitar upside down.  Nobody told him it was upside down, and by the time he found out, he was too good to change.

“You Don’t Care For Me Enough to Cry” by John Moreland

One of the most devastating songs on John Moreland’s incredible and devastating album High On Tulsa Heat.  I have had the great fortune of seeing him live a number of times this year, and he never fails to silence and audience and bring grown people to tears.   The video we have is from his April performance on the stage of Music City Roots.  If you watch the video, at the 2:22 mark you will see two of Music City’s blogging elite enraptured by his music.  (Chase from Too Much Country and Joe from Ear to the Ground).

Well here we are… late, but I did listen to this shuffle this morning.  Been on the road most of the day, so I’m just posting it now.   I got to keep it brief, but check out the great music.

“Notes” by Mothers

Another track from Panamanian Times. Just flat out cool punkish rock from New York City.  From the Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen collective.

“Fire and Flood” by Joe Sundell

This song has been lingering around my playlist for a long while.  From Joe Sundell’s awesome album, The Hat Thief.  Dig this song.

“Are You Gonna Be My Friend?” by Drew Kohl

Our first shuffle listen to Sweetheart EP by Drew Kohl.  We first heard Drew’s original voice as part of Young America.  Drew tackles the subject of love in some interesting ways, and Sweetheart is a really good record.  But don’t take my word for it, read what I had to say….

“Turn Me On” by Tipi Valley

Ed Toff (a.k.a. Tipi Valley) has been a favorite of Ear to the Ground for several years.  His latest release is called Dust.  Tipi Valley is from Swansea in the UK, and he doesn’t use You Tube.  So, you will need to listen to Turn Me On using the widget below

http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/album=3232476378/size=large/bgcol=ffffff/linkcol=0687f5/tracklist=false/artwork=small/track=1509590021/transparent=true/ “American Flags in Black and White” by John Moreland

Hands down one of the best shows I’ve seen this year was John Moreland at The 5 Spot (just a couple of hours after seeing him at Music City Roots).  He managed to silence both crowds with his gritty, gut-wrenching take on Americana/Roots/Folk music.  Hands down one of the best records of 2015 is Moreland’s High on Tulsa Heat.  Here is a track from that album.

“H.S.K.T.” by Sylvan Esso

Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes.  Sylvan Esso is Amelia Meath of Mountain Man and Nick Sanborn who does electronic producing under the name Made of Oak.  This song is simple yet brilliant, infectious without being obnoxious.

“Lone Star Song” by Grant Lee Buffalo

Might Joe Moon was a Goodwill CD bin find, and I have really enjoyed discovering this album.  Lone Star Song may be my favorite song on the album, but I’m not sure.  It is a favorite, though…

“Jim Along Josie” by The Barefoot Movement

I can count on one finger the number of young, tradition folk bands that I have met in a chance encounter at the Cash Cabin Studio.  The Barefoot Movement would be that one finger.  Off of their EP The High Road.  Jim Along Josie is a foot-stomping traditional folk song.

“Ground” by Terrible

Terrible are Nashville band who are anything but… “Ground” is a song from their album Oakwood which was released earlier this month.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Weirdo Mix

Yesterday, I posted a listing of the live music I have seen this week.  Last night, I had the opportunity to visit the famous Cash Cabin in Hendersonville to meet and hear some really awesome music from a San Diego band called Talk Like June.  They have been recording at the cabin with John Carter Cash producing.  The music was great, and they stories and people were truly incredible. The spirit of Johnny and June Carter Cash is so present in that relatively small space.

Please understand, though, I gather no pleasure from seeing incredible live shows and meeting legendary music figures and all of that… I do it all for you dear reader – so that I may bring all of those experiences back with me and make Ear to the Ground the best it can be,  It’s a dirty job, but someone has to do it…

Please don’t feel too bad for me, though….

“19” by Boy Named Banjo

Nashville’s Boy Named Banjo are going to be at Bonnaroo next month.  This song is from their album, Long Story Short.  A shout out to my friend Boyd for the recommendation.  He’s been guiding my musical tastes and experiences for many, many years,  and he currently is Israel having an incredible experience I am sure.

“City of Ends” by A Color Engine

A Color Engine was a project featuring one of Ear to the Ground’s absolute favorite people, Don Ryan along with Eric Burchfield who was part of Elephant Goes West which we featured here.  Don made this old project available as a form of compensation for the fact that some of us have been waiting literally a million years for a new Don Ryan record… okay maybe not literally… but you know… I dig this A Colored Engine record, but I’m still baiting my breath for the really new record.

“Hey Lawdy Papa” by The Barefoot Movement

Among this interesting people I met last night was this band newly relocated to Nashville.  They have a very real interest in promoting and learning traditional music, and I got hold of some of their music.  This song is from an EP called The High Road.  This is a Traditional song once recorded by a blues singer named Teddy Grace.

“Fisher’s Hornpipe” by David Schnaufer and The Cactus Brothers

Speaking of Traditional music…. we have another track from the legendary Dulcimer player here with Nashville band The Cactus Brothers which started as a side project of the great 1980s Nashville band, Walk the West.

“Swarm” by Whiskey Shivers

Exposing the rowdier side of roots music, we have Whiskey Shivers from their self-titled album.

“The Way it Went Down” by Tim Carroll

One of my favorite (among many songs) by the prolific and tireless Nashville guitarist and songwriter.  From his Pure as Coal album.  The video was produced by students at Watkins College of Art, Design, and Film here in Nashville.

“White Flag” by John Moreland

Oklahoma songwriter John Moreland has released one of the best albums of the year and if you ever get the chance to see him live – go and be prepared to have your mind and heard blown wide open.

“Uja” by Tanya Tagaq

In our quest to make sure we leave no musical stone unturned..  some contemporary throat singing music from Cambridge Bay, Nunavut in Canada.  This is actually the second track we’ve presented from her.  Pretty cool stuff.

“Weirdo” by Masked Intruder

Masked Intruder are a masked Pop Punk/Power Pop band from Madison, Wisconsin. Weirdo is just a flat out awesome song.

“Tide is Rising” by Direct Divide

Direct Divide are from Seattle and play powerful Orchestral/Cinematic Rock music.

“Trustful Hands” by The Do

The Do (the o has a line through it – one of those European things I don’t know how to duplicate in typing).  They are from Paris France, and I really dig this song.  I want to hear more from them as soon as possible.

Welcome to the working week!  We start off what is shaping up to be a challenging week with a pretty diverse shuffle…. let’s jump right in…

“Elemental Raven Storm” by The Great Game

We start off our week with another great song from the self-titled album by this innovative band from Europe.  They say they make “New World Music”, and I cannot argue with this.  Unique sounds and great songs.

“Stone Blind Horses” by Ray Wylie Hubbard

From the latest album by the Texas legend.  The album is called, “The Ruffian’s Misfortune”, and this song was one of my highlights from his Nashville show which was held a week ago yesterday.

“Cherry Bomb” by Tyler, The Creator

That’s right, I followed up Ray Wylie Hubbard with Tyler the Creator. Actually, I didn’t the shuffle did it.  I’m just the guy who had both songs in my playlist.  The title track from the new album (released April 13).  Man, this is good.

“The Dawn Thief” by Whale Fall

So, we started off with some “New World Music”, moved to some amazing Americana Roots music, shifted to some Hip-Hop… where do we go from there?  How about some Instrumental, cinematic, progressive music.   From their album, The Mandrean.

“It’s You” by Mouth Reader

And from there… we move on to whatever it is that Mouth Reader does… Punk, Garage, Psychedelic… whatever it is, it is good… and, they released a pop up book record from Record Store Day 2015.  See the Video Playlist for details.  Their new EP is called Hands.

“Let it Be Me (Je t-appartiens)” by Skeeter Davis and Bobby Bare

Skeeter Davis and Bobby Bare covering an Everly Brothers’ song?  Of course, that will fit neatly into our shuffle right here.  The original song was released in 1960, and this version was released in 1964.

“Put Out the Fire” by Tom Schreck

From Music City Legends to the Nashville Outsider (who happens to be one of the our city’s finest songwriters from his album Save Your Glory.

“The Bugle Sounds Again” by Aztec Camera

Aztec Camera were one of my favorite bands from all those years ago.    This song is from High Land, Hard Rain (their debut album).

“Chorus of Zombies” by The Ghoul Goes West

I love Zombies and I love The Ghoul Goes West, so it stands to reason… from their album, Ghosts and Bones and Blood and Things. One of my favorite “from the inbox” albums of this year.

“Cleveland County Blues” by John Moreland

And, we close out this first shuffle of the new week with a track from the amazing new album from John Moreland.  The album is called High on Tulsa Heat, and it is a good one…

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Talking inYour Sleep Mix

I had a technical glitch which prevented me from going back to review the songs in this morning’s shuffle, so I did the best I could from memory.  I realize that no one would know the difference, but I felt the need to be honest about that.  I think I came pretty close (possible some songs out of order)…

“Hard Hearted Old Farmer” by Jack Kerouac

Jack Kerouac having fun in the studio and laying down the Beat generation goods… From Blues and Haikus

“Desolate” by Ben Arthur (ft. Rachel Yamagata)

A lovely song from If You Look for My Heart with Rachel Yamagata.  By the way, the video is for a different song, but it is worth mentioning that the video was made by the multi-talented Matthew Hendershot of The End Men (who I may have mentioned once or twice on this blog).

“Wildfires” by Mariachi El Bronx

Mariachi El Bronx are not from The Bronx (in case that is what you are thinking), but they do play Mariachi music.  They also happen to have another band which is called The Bronx… They are from L.A. From their album, Mariachi El Bronx (III).

“Wa Wa Dance” by Tom Tom Club

Everybody’s doing a brand new dance now!  Wa Wa – from Boom Boom Chi Boom Boom.

“Search” by Minutemen”

from The Punch Line and Post Mersh Vol I.  The Minutemen pretty much are my desert island band, but I’m glad I don’t really have to choose just one band.

“World of Meaning” by The Torn Images

More great hard alternative music from Reviver.

“Heaven” by John Moreland!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);

Our second song of the week that was featured on the show Sons of Anarchy.  I was fortunate enough to catch John Moreland on the opening night of his Campfire songs tour with Caleb Caudle and Aaron Lee Tasjan.  If you have the chance to see this three incredible songwriters together, make it happen! It is on the album Earthbound Blues.

“Old Postcards” by Amelia White

After hearing Amelia play a few times around town, I finally got to meet her last week.  Look for new music hopefully soon.  This is the title track from her latest album.

“Pillow Talk” by Guadalcanal Diary

A dose of pure jangle pop heaven from the album Walking in the Shadow of the Big Man.

“It Never Was the Same” by The Twilight Sad

The Twilight Sad are from Scotland.  This is from their 2014 album Nobody Wants to Be Here and Nobody Wants to Leave.

“Offering” (Live) by The Visit

This is one of the most amazing pieces of music I have heard in a long time. Voice and Cello with the energy of good punk music and the virtuosity of classical music. And even that doesn’t do this powerful piece of music justice.  Give it a listen and download and support this Toronto duo.
