Well, it is FRIDAY!  Not only that, but I have a three day weekend ahead of me.  Some prelims before we get to the Featured Friday Shuffle…

Last night was another absolutely astonishing night of music at The 5 Spot in East Nashville.  First, it was week one of David Olney’s September Residency. As always, the songs were fantastic and the band was tight.  Besides his usual band (Justin Amaral drums, Daniel Seymour bass, and Sergio Webb guitar), Olney was joined by Ward Stout (who played other stringed type instruments).  The highlight for me was when Olney played is signature song, “Deeper Well” and wrapped the song around a mind-blowing mashup of Bo Diddley and “Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

The late show at the Spot began with Reno Bo who was joined on guitar by Sadler Vaden (Jason Isbell’s guitar player).  Then, Jesse Lafser played a spirited set that impressed me greatly.  The night ended with a magical jam that features Cordovas and featured Joe Firstman (who was at one time the band leader on Last Call with Carson Daly), Audley Freed (Black Crowes, Sheryl Crow), Steve Gorman (Black Crowes), and the always amazing Brian Wright.  Late in the set, Firstman turned over his bass to guest Pat Sansone (Wilco). The band performed an absolutely killer version of Neil Young’s “Cortez the Killer”, and then Firstman called up another guest, Jewel who joined the band for John Prine’s “Angel from Montgomery”.  An awe-inspiring end to a great night of music.

Other news, Nashville singer-songwriter Kevin Gordon released his new album, Long Gone Time today.  You should buy this album, but if you need convincing, you can check out my review which is up on No Depression.

“Shed My Skin” by Stone Cupid

Our first of two tracks from the forthcoming album The Cardinal by Stone Cupid – the Nashville band fronted by Julie Christensen (Divine Horsemen, Leonard Cohen etc.). The band features the dual guitar attack of Sergio Webb and Chris Tench, bassist Bones Hillman (Midnight Oil) and drummer Steve Latanation (Agent Orange).  If you failed to heed my advice to get in on the pre-order, then you will have to wait until early 2016 to hear this record. We have a live performance from Stone Cupid, and a fun video from Julie and her husband in our Video playlist.

“Market Place” by Eight O’Five Jive

Congratulations are in order to Nashville’s Eight O’Five Jive. The took home two Nashville Industry Music Awards for Best Live Blues Performers and Best Blues Artists.  Well deserved!  Too Many Men is a fun album filled with many great songs like the one we featured today.

“Paper Napkins” by Benchmarks

Another one from American Night. This song was first released as a solo single by Todd Farrell back in December. It is such a good song, and rightfully, it ended up on Benchmarks new record.

“Hit Me, Hit Me, Hit Me” by The Satisfactors

More straight ahead rock and roll from the self-titled debut by the New Jersey supergroup. A fun song!

“Broken Wing” by Stone Cupid

Another from The Cardinal.  If you catch her live, you may just be able to get your copy of the album.  Otherwise, mark your calendar for January 22, 2016.

“Roman Candles” by Benchmarks

Benchmarks is the band formerly known as Todd Farrell and the Dirtybirds.  The name change was meant to better represent who the band have become.  Based upon their new EP American Night, which came out a month or so ago, they are a band who have found themselves. This track in particular evokes the comfortably unpredictable feel of a hot summer night in the South – out in a field… fireworks and alcohol and abandon. 

“Please Don’t Give Up on Me” by Amy Black

Singer-Songwriter Amy Black’s latest album, The Muscle Shoals Sessions, is a tribute to the great music that has (and continues to) come out of the “Shoals” in Alabama. The album contains covers of some truly classic songs mixed in with some choice original songs – like our track today.  I would think that it takes some audacity to place ones own songs along side some proven classics, but Black has the songwriting chops to pull it off.  She is backed by a stellar band.

“Lovin’ Babe” by Anna and Elizabeth

Anna and Elizabeth are a duo from Virginia. They play Appalachian Roots music.  This song is a traditional tune from their self-titled album which came out earlier this year.

“My Baby Got It” by The Satisfactors

One more dose of pure rock and roll from the New Jersey super-group from their self-titled debut album.

“Sympathy for the Devil” by Ben Arthur

The leadoff track from Ben Arthur’s forthcoming album of “answer songs”, is a response to the classic Rolling Stones’ song from Beggars Banquet. Whereas the Stones’ classic is epic in scale, Arthur’s response is intimate and personal.  It is one of my favorite tracks on this album – maybe because I most familiar with the source material.

“Pickled Ginger” by Wilco

Another track from the brand new “surprise” release from Wilco finds the band sounding a good as ever.

And we close out this Tuesday shuffle with a song from Kevn Kinney’s Sun Tangled Angel Revival (S.T.A.R.) from 2006’s Comin’ Round Again.  Kinney closes out his month-long residency at The 5 Spot tomorrow night with guests Warner Hodges and Chuck Mead. Hodges has announced that he will be backed by a band that is essentially The Bluefields (Dan Baird, Brad Pemberton, and Joe Blanton).

The reality of writing an independent music blog, as I have done for over four years now, is that you have to push through those days when it seems like no one is pay attention (and even those days when seriously no one is paying attention). Maybe by attrition or maybe dumb luck, sometimes good stuff starts to happen, and you find yourself in incredible situations that almost do not seem real. The key in those moments (for me at least) is to not lose my sense of wonder and no matter what to never lose the hunger for discovering new music.  For me, when I lose that hunger, it will be time to move on… fortunately, I am not there yet.

Okay, so what prompted all this?  Several things, some amazing opportunities have come my way, and I choosing not to be cynical or jaded about them. Also, something seems to have broken open in the last couple of weeks and the number of people contacting me to listen to their music has grown exponentially. It can be overwhelming, but seriously it is the most incredible good fortune.  So be patient… I will listen to everything sent to me, but I can’t make any promises beyond that.  Every time someone sends me music, I hope it will be one of “those” albums that changes everything… it isn’t always, but even when it is not, I still get to hear some incredible music.

This song by my friend Andrew Adkins’ band The Colored Parade was featured in a motion picture starring Ethan Hawke which was based upon a play by William Shakespeare.

New Jersey Rock and Roll supergroup with another song from their debut album.

“Has He Got a Friend for Me?” by Maria McKee

Seriously, do you need to know more than this is Maria McKee covering Richard Thompson?  I think the shuffle added this song today because I am going to see Richard Thompson on Saturday night.  Maybe he will do this song???

“Happy Alone” by Saintseneca

Saintseneca are a folk band signed to ANTI Records and based out of Columbus, Ohio. The album is Dark Arc, and it was released in 2014.

“High Water (For Charley Patton)” by Bob Dylan

From Love and Theft .  Charley Patton was a Delta Blues musician.  The song references the Patton song, “High Water Everywhere”.  Another good reminder that for all of his flaws and inconsistencies, Bob Dylan remains one of the most important musical figures of the current era.  

“Long Night” by Guster

From the seventh studio album by Boston alternative rock band Guster. Evermotion was produced by Richard Swift who is now a member of The Shins.

“Living Proof” by Aaron Lee Tasjan

The shuffle brought up this song from Aaron Lee Tasjan’s recent EP, Telling Stories to the Wall, which is amazing by the way. A great example of Tasjan’s way of speaking the truth with humor and spot on cultural references.

“Big Apple Blues” by Tomas Doncker Band

The title track from New York’s Tomas Doncker Band and their latest album which is a collaboration with Pulitzer Prize winning Poet Yusef Komunyakaa.

Got to meet Alex Giorgetti of the long time #E2TG favorite The Gypsy West.  He was in town with his girlfriend Laura.  I always like meeting the people I write about in real life.  Word has it there could be some new music from The Gypsy West later this year.  Cannot wait!

Saturday, I got to hang out and hear some music from Patrick Kinsley who is getting set to release the first single from his forthcoming album.  I am super stoked for the new album and the first single “Back in Illinois” name drops Ear to the Ground – which I am going to just assume is intentional tribute… Don’t try to correct me on this!

Last night was another fine Eastside Invasion at Bobby’s Idle Hour.  All of the performances were fantastic.  Taylor Alexander, James Tomberlin, Vanessa Darian and Steven Cooper (Van Darien), Joe Nolan, and Luella and Some Fella (Tim Carroll) filling in for Darrin Bradbury. and more…

Now, it is Monday – a grey, drizzly morning – not feeling 100% – pushing through because it is what I do…  Music motivates in it’s own way… shuffle up!

A fantastic song from Howe Gelb’s band taken from the benefit album, Sweet Relief – a 1993 album that included many artists covering the songs of Victoria Williams – who had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

Another great song from the Bethany, CT band. Just in time (a week and a day late) for Mother’s Day… or not…

“Different Darkness” by Carl Anderson

Still working on that Best of 2015 (so far) list, but Risk of Loss from which this one is taken, is still likely to be high up there. Carl Anderson is on the road and if he comes within driving distance of where you are, go see him.

“Run” by Storm Chronicles

Some lovely progressive music from the album Looking Backward.  I have been enjoying the gorgeous soundscapes present on this album.

“The Bear Came Over the Mountain” by Ben Arthur

Another from Call and Response.  This one is an “Answer song” to the Alice Munro Short Story.  By the way, I think I picked the same video for both Ben Arthur songs… but the second version was posted by SXSW and contains some additional background into Call and Response. 

“The Ghost in You” (Psychedelic Furs cover) by Robyn Hitchcock

Yeah… I was pretty much sold just by the idea of Robyn Hitchcock covering the Furs… fortunately, the execution lives up to my expectations… a great song well covered.

Australian born, Nashville transplant – the amazing Anne McCue is one Nashville has no trouble claiming as our own. This was the first single from her recent album, Blue Sky Thinkin’.  The video features McCue with Webb Wilder and Kevin Gordon.

The prequel to “Not All”, and clocking in at just about 2 seconds at most.

“Worst That Could Happen to Me” by The Brooklyn Bridge

Some sweet pop soul music from the 1968 self titled album by the New York band often billed as Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge.  The song was written by the great Jimmy Webb and originally recorded by The Fifth Dimension.

Last night, I took in a fine show at 3rd and Lindsley with East Nashville songwriter Aaron Lee Tasjan opening for the legendary Ray Wylie Hubbard.  And, yes this was as badass awesome as it sounds like it would be… but don’t take my word for it… okay, take my word for it… read my review at No Depression…

Tonight I am seeing some up and comer named Bob Dylan. Heard some good things about him…

Shuffle-wise, we start off the week with some good stuff.

“Been Lookin’ For” by Whiskey Shivers

I’ve noticed that some #E2TG favorites like Francie Moon  and Black Jake and the Carnies have been opening up for Whiskey Shivers on their current tour.  I knew I liked Whiskey Shivers for some reason… or something like that.  Cool stuff…

“Mereana Mordegard Glesgorv” by Batkhi Dahn

Proving I’m not that hip, I had to Google the title of this song from Batkhi Dahn’s awesome new record, Plays 15.  The title refers to an internet legend about a mysterious You Tube video and a curse of some kind.  If you are curious you can Google it to.  In the meantime, check out Batkhi Dahn which is the side project of The Foresters’ bassist Hayden Nork.  The music is pretty out there and pretty rad and worth a listen for the not-so-faint-of-heart.

“Because You’re Gone Song” by Little Annie and Paul Wallfisch

A gorgeous song from the Noisetrade sampler from the Big Ears Festival held earlier this month in Knoxville.  I don’t know how I was not aware of Little Annie before now, but I am completely captivated now. 

“Gray Duck” by Doomtree

From another Noisetrade sampler – this one for SXSW.  Doomtree are a Hip-Hop group from Minneapolis. I dig this song, and I am always glad to bring a multitude of genres/styles into the shuffle. Don’t know much about Doomtree, but as I said, I like this song.

“Dunford’s Fancy” by The Waterboys

A Steve Wickham instrumental composition from the album Fisherman’s Blues. I like  being the blog that transitions from Little Annie’s Chamber Torch music, to Hip-Hop, to traditional sounding Celtic music.  It keeps me on my toes.   

“Fathers Be Kind” by Ivan and Alyosha

The title track of an EP, this song also appeared on All the Times We Had.   Ivan and Alyosha are from Seattle.

“The Peak” by American Scarecrows

What is it about Minneapolis?  I “discovered” American Scarecrows due to Noisetrade, and the more I hear, the more I like.

“Greenwood Girls” by Kevin Gordon

Kevin Gordon is from Louisiana but has been a Nashville resident for over 20 years. Around this parts he is legend.  If he’s not, he should be a legend everywhere.  If you aren’t up to speed on Kevin Gordon, you have a good chance to get caught up quickly.  Tangle the Blue Sky is a sampler of songs from his last three albums, and it includes a duet with the incomparable Lucinda Williams.  It is available on Noisetrade now.

“Graceland” by Paul Simon

Whether you are fan of Paul Simon (the man or the music), Graceland – the album is an undeniable masterpiece and one of the best records of the last several decades. Graceland the song is infectious and near perfect – I think.

“I Love Girls” by The Satisfactors

The thing I love about The Satisfactors is that they don’t mince words or beat around the bush. This is just no-frills straight ahead Rock and Roll, and although I like all kinds of music (even sometimes music with frills), there will always be a place in my earhole this kind of music. I can’t help it.

“East of West” by The End Men

The End Men from Brooklyn were the 2013 Ear to the Ground Band of the Year, and they remain the most mentioned artist in the history of the blog.  The just released their latest album, Terms and Conditions, and unfathomably they have managed to top themselves again.  Augmented the sax work of Matthew Elia, the band digs deeper into the rough hewn, dirty blues which first caught my attention, while also expanding their sound into exciting and interesting new directions.  I got to listen to the whole album last night, and I was blown away.  Meanwhile, this song from that album showed up first on the shuffle this morning.  Visit their website for all the fine print.

“Song for Buck Owens” by David Dondero

You don’t know how glad I am that Darrin Bradbury turned me on to the music of David Dondero.  How exactly had I not known about this before now?  How did you? Now, you know.  Go check it out.  I love this song for the one and only Buck Owens.

“Running for Cover” by Ivan and Alyosha

At the risk of ruining my reputation of being well read, when I first heard about Ivan and Alyosha, I thought they were a male (Ivan) and female (Alyosha) duo. (The name comes from The Brothers Karamazov – Ivan and Alyosha are the two youngest brothers) which I owned but never worked up the courage to read.   The band is from Seattle and they make music that is far less intimidating than a Russian novel, but pretty awesome nonetheless.

“Ride” by Cletus Kennelly and Lori Kelley

In another happy shuffle coincidence, today is Lori Kelley’s birthday, so Happy Birthday Lori!   Lori is a bright light in the Nashville songwriting scene, and I am happy to be able to hear some of the music she made before she moved here.

“Just One of the Guys” by Jenny Lewis

Man I dig this song from her 2014 album, The Voyager which was primarily produced by Ryan Adams..  If you don’t know, Jenny was in the Indie band Rilo Kiley.

“Another Day” by Artur U and the New City Limits

The album is Holiday From Eternity and it was released about a month ago.  This is the lead track from that album.  Artur U and the New City Limits are from Finland, and I dig their music a bunch.  I almost made a passing comment about the abundance of great music from Scandinavia, but then I went on Wikipedia and discovered a way too complicated discussion of what countries do and do not comprise Scandinavia. So, I will suffice it to say that their is a bunch of great music coming from the European continent.

“Lesson Number One” by Marshall Crenshaw

The final track from Crenshaw’s 1985 album Downtown.  If I ran the world, Marshall Crenshaw would be one of the best selling and most famous musicians of all time.  Of course, I would likely make a bunch of stupid decisions as well.

“Expositor” by The Vigilance Committee

Welcome to Tuesday….   so, at some point in the past (for reasons which may have made since at the time), I signed up to get e-mail updates from one of the local television channels. I don’t always read them, but today, I did… and there was a story about a music video addressing East Nashville gentrification.  I had heard about this, so I actually clicked on the link and watch the video, and there was Ear to the Ground Artist of the Year and my friend, Darrin Bradbury lip-synching and acting like a champ… Here is a link to the article.


“Rhode Island Summer” by The Danbury Lie

I am pretty sure this song has been in a shuffle before.  The Danbury Lie released this as a download single some time ago, and it has reappeared as part of their latest album Scattered Moments of Connection.  Interesting trivia, when a song I download does not have a picture associated with it, my music player uses some existing picture, and it often repeated uses the same image over an extended period of time.  For awhile, the image it used was the image that came with the single version of this song.  Now, you know…

“True Love” by Darrin Bradbury

Coincidental to the anecdote shared above, last night I realized that I had never featured Darrin Bradbury’s Tur-Lyfe: A Live Recording of Unfortunate Events on Ear to the Ground.  I was appalled with myself, and set about to make it right.  First up off that release is what has been come one of Bradbury’s most popular and best loved songs.  A little known fact is that originally the song was not going to compare true love to a meth lab, but instead was going to compare true love to an indie rock band.  The original opening line was, “Our love is like the death cab in your cuties basement.”   As always remember the jokes are free of charge and worth every penny….

Tim and Susan Lee are cooking up something special for their recently released side project Bark which features Susan on drums.

“And the Blind Man Lead the Way” by The Great Game

From the inbox, comes this band whose members and influences comes from across Europe, the Middle East, and North and South America.   A very interesting sound which I will look forward to checking out more in depth.  The album is also called The Great Game.

“Wicked Mind” by Fancytramp

From a Jeffery Drag Sampler comes this song by the late, great Nashville band Fancytramp.  When Fancytramp ended, a couple of the members went on to form a band called Idle Bloom which I recently saw open for Turbo Fruits at 3rd and Lindsley.

Off work today –  I thought I would semi-live blog today’s shuffle….

Numerologists will note that before today’s shuffle, my active playlist stands at six hundred sixty six.  Make of that what you will, but beside any other connotations, the playlist is a large as it has ever been, and I hope it generates an interesting mix of music.  I don’t know if it will, but I have high hopes because I know the songs that make up the playlist.  I just don’t yet know the order they will come out… so without further ado…  let’s get ready to shuffle…

 Song # 1 – “If Money Talks” by Jason and the Scorchers

From Lost and Found – 1985.  If money did the talking, I’d be all ears…

Song # 2 – “Heartbeat” by Kopecky Family Band

Another Nashville band… this one is from Kids Raising Kids – 2012.  They are now known as just Kopecky if you are keeping score at home.  Groovy indie pop music…

Song # 3 – “Ain’t That Easy” by D’Angelo and the Vanguard

From Black Messiah – 2014 – Taking things down a soulful path… from one of the best records of the year (even if it was released at the tail end of last year… what’s a calendar anyway?

Song # 4 – “Johnny Commando” by The Satisfactors

From the self titled debut – 2015 of this New Jersey supergroup comes this tribute to Johnny Ramone.  A very fitting tribute…

Song # 5 – “Heroin Vietnam” by A Color Engine

Yesterday, we had some early music from an E2TG favorite in the form of Burning Bridges some early music by the enigmatic genius behind The Danbury Lie.  So, in that vein, we have some early music from another E2TG favorite and coincidentally? a friend of said enigmatic genius – Don Ryan.  The album is called Voyage Underwater; 56 Knots and it was made in 2007 or so.  You can read about the album and project here. This track is a mere 38 seconds, so I actually had to pause the shuffle to get this posted.  So let us continue…

From Panamanian Times – 2014… some punky, jazzy vibes from this Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen band…  looking for new music from them soon…

Song # 7 – “No Need to Wave” by Artur U and the New City Limits

From Holiday From Eternity – 2015…  This alternative band is from Helsinki, Finland.  They just released their debut album.  Oddly enough, they already have a connection of sorts to Ear to the Ground – as their steel guitar player has played with Bill Laswell and James Chance both of whom are connected to my New York True Groove friends Marla Mase and Tomas Doncker.

Song #9 – “Get Up, Get Up” by Tim Lee 3

After some global travels, the shuffle brings us back to Tennessee with my friends from Knoxville off their album  Live From Armory Sound: Boston – 2015.  The song was first released on Tim Lee’s solo album Concrete Dog – 2004.

Song #10 – “Driva Man” by Alabama Shakes

From the Soundtrack to the film 12 Years a Slave – 2013.  A cover of a Max Roach song.  Alabama Shakes follow up to their break through debut Boys and Girls is due out in April, and they recently delivered a highly praised performance on SNL.

More than likely, I’ll be back with a regular shuffle tomorrow, but I hope you enjoyed this “Live” blogging experiment as much as I did… although in retrospect it probably reads much like other shuffles.. oh well, I had fun…..
