Greetings from chilly, overcast Nashville, home of the hit television series and a bunch of other things, too.   Well, this could very well be the final Music Shuffle from my current cellular telephone.  A new phone is scheduled to arrive today, and if all goes as planned, we will begin a new era of superior music shuffling here at Ear2theGround.

Meanwhile, as you know (you do know, don’t you?) we load up the memory card with fresh tracks on Monday nights. We had some fun selecting songs this week and some of the fruits of our fun make an appearance in this morning’s shuffle. Shall we?

While, we don’t highlight it as we once did, here at Ear2theGround, we dig a cool cover version.  We have a good one for you today to lead off our Morning Shuffle:  How about legendary Phoenix band, Meat Puppets with a song from a 1981 compilation album covering a song from Neil Young’s second studio album (and his first with Crazy Horse).  Herewith, please find enclosed for your enjoyment, Meat Puppets doing their version of The Losing End from the album Keats Rides a Harley, which is a cover of  the Neil Young and Crazy Horse song which appeared first in 1969 on the album Everybody Knows This is Nowhere.

I know absolutlely nothing about our next band. But, we do have another cover.  This one is a cover of the Rolling Stone’s classic Paint It, Black  and is performed by a band called The Insurgency from a Stone’s tribute album called Exiled Again.  I found a band called The Insurgency on Facebook, but I do not believe it is the same band.  This band apparently has done several tribute albums on Cherry Red Records.  In any event, here is the album:

California punk band, White Flag are up next with their contribution to the 1987 compilation Rat Music for Rat People Vol. III called Kitchen Diaster.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Isolated Incident Mix

Yeah, yeah, yeah… blah… it’s f**king Wednesday and where does the time go when it goes away.  I’m just randomly typing words, and if they make sense, it’s not my fault.  In other news, I have no news.

This morning some pretty cool songs to lead us into the day:

First up we have the title track from Sam Phillips 1992 album Cruel Inventions which produced by her husband at the time T Bone Burnett. I’m pretty sure I saw her live back around the time this album came out, but my memory is failing me, and I’ll have to check with Rex Silo (as if he has any more working brain cells than I do) to confirm it.  In any event, this is a great album that totally does not sound 20 years old to me.

Trivia: Sam Phillips appeared in the 1995 film Die Hard with a Vengeance.

Next up we have Jolie Holland from her 2004 album Escondida with a song called, Goodbye California. To the best of my knowledge, Jolie Holland did not appear in the 1995 film Die Hard with a Vengeance. 
And finally, we wrap up the morning shuffle with a bonus track from the 2011 reissue of the The Rolling Stones’ classic album Some Girls. No Spare Parts  features some newly recorded vocals by Mick Jagger who despite doing some acting in his career alas also did not appear in the 1995 film Die Hard with a Vengeance.

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Camp Crystal Lake Mix

 The songs (not the recordings) in today’s shuffle are an average of 44 years old.  Our set includes two classics from my youth and two recent covers of songs from before my youth.

Sex and Dying in High Society by X is from their debut Los Angeles.  “So you marry your daddy
with a different name”

Please Do Not Go by Violent Femmes from their eponymous debut. “Tell ya, man, I’m stuck on this lovely girl Of course to me, she mean all t’ world”

Love in Vain performed here by our good friends You & Me is a cover of a 1937 Robert Johnson song which was also covered by The Stones on Let It Bleed.  “Well I followed her to the station
With a suitcase in my hand” 

The Ocean performed here by Laura Veirs and her husband Tucker Martine (as Mount Analog) is a cover of the Led Zeppelin song from House of the Holy. Trivia: Tucker Martine (like my friend Rex Silo moved from Nashville to Boulder, Colorado). “Singing in the sunshine, laughing in the rain.
Hitting on the moonshine, rocking in the brain.”

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – If a Tree… Mix

Here we go into another week. Couch by Couchwest has come to an end, but you can relive the glory here:
We got 10 songs this a.m. so let’s get to it:
 
UK band, The xx are up first with VCR from the album xx. Be Kind and Rewind…
 
 
 Next up is Portland, Oregon band Loch Lomond with the lovely Elephants & Little Girls.
 
East LA band Los Lobos have been around since the mid 70s, but their breakthrough came in 1984 with release of the T-Bone Burnett produced How Will the Wolf Survive?  We have A Matter of Time today which I actually converted from a vinyl copy of the out of print Slash Records compilation Slash Cuts.
 
In typical random fashion, Bruce Springsteen’s spare solo album Nebraska was the first CD I purchased (a few days before I bought my first CD player).  Atlantic City is our track today.
 
Beggars Banquet was released in 1968 and was the 7th studio album by the Rolling Stones.  Street Fighting Man  is just a great song.
The Sea and Cake come from Chicago.  Up on the Northshore from The Moonlight Butterfly album is a beautiful song that I fell in love with instantly.
 
Nashville’s own Will Kimbrough (via Mobile, Alabama) fights against his Southern upbringing by deciding to be Less Polite a politically charged song from his politically charged album Americanitis. (Hint: This album is unlikely to be played at a Tea Party Rally).
 
 
I honestly didn’t know until I started writing this post that Sam Prekop was in The Sea and Cake.  It makes sense, though.  Up above we have a link to an earlier release by Sam Prekop.  The song today, Arizona comes from a film called Pavilion by Tim Sutton.  Mr. Prekop contributed to the score. You can download your own copy of Arizona and stream another track called The Eve.  Stereogum will hook you up – here.
 
“Don’t forget the Motor City…”  Outrageous Cherry have been around for ten years and have nine full-length albums to their credit.  Thanks to Beyond Beyond is Beyond and Bang Bang Boogaloo for turning me on to the band. Today’s track, Unbalanced in the City is off of the band’s latest album Seemingly Solid Reality.
And finally, Magnolia Electric Co. have been absent from the public since 2009 due to on-going personal issues of founder Jason Molina. You can find out more about that  – here. We have the amazing song, Whip-Poor-Will from the album Josephine.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Cheer Up Sleepy Jean Mix

I wish I had some Monkees’ music in my MP3 player. I may have to remedy that soon.  As we remember Davy Jones, we remember the cultural phenomenon and cool music of this made for TV band of days gone by.  There have been some amazing tributes written by a wide variety of musical artists.  Say hey!

Late – so let’s get onto the list.

I created a spur-of-the-moment randomish playlist from which to shuffle and I’m pleased with the results:

First up, Rocks Off is off the uber-classic Rolling Stones album, Exile on Main Street. It captures the loose, filthy rock and roll music the band was making at that time.

 Me and a friend once drove 80 or so miles in a convertible with the top down in a drizzle to see the next  band in the daily shuffle.  Will and the Bushmen were from Mobile, Alabama before settling in Nashville. Later Will’s and my life would intersect in a most unexpected way.  Can’t Turn Back the Clock was on the band’s 1991 album Blunderbuss (not to be confused with the new Jack White album of the same name – unless in your confusion you check out Will and the Bushmen, in which case be confused).

Off! makes classic West Coast punk rock for the 21st Century.  Not surprising since the lead singer is ex-Black Flag/Circle Jerk Keith Morris.  I

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – 3.5 Degrees Mix

I read somewhere that due to the explosive of social networking – primarily Facebook, the degrees of separation between all human beings has been reduced from 6 to 3.5.  I have no idea if that is true, but it sounds right.  It is always odd when a “Friend Suggestion” comes up and the person and I have mutual friends who come from entirely different parts of my life. 

This also falls in line with my philosophy that music is all about connections, and that no matter how diverse and random my music collection is, there is always a way to connect any one artist to another.

First up, Have Mercy is a stand-out track on the Jack White produced Van Lear Rose by Loretta Lynn. What a great collaboration this turned out to be.

Finally, completing our interesting three song shuffle and proving that the drugs were really good or really bad back in the mid sixties, we have a track whose working title was Tough Apple, but which ended up being called 2000 Light Years from Home and it comes from the Stones’ album Their Satanic Majesties Request.
