Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Gonna Use My Fingers Mix

I am late and I don’t have much time, so I will just leave you with a long mix of music and very little in the way of narration,,,,  enjoy

“Van Helsing Boom Box” (Man Man Cover) by The Blind Owl Band

Friends from Upstate New York covering the amazing Man Man from Philly.

“Where I Belong” by Ben Arthur (Ft. Bobby St. Ours)

I am amazed by the range of music on this album.  A previous track we played featured Aesop Rock. This one has Bobby St. Ours with an Appalachian sound.

“The Night Comes” by Joe Nolan

Another cool song from my friend Joe.  Catch him January 25 at Bobby’s Idle Hour for the next East Side Invasion.

“Tattooed Love Boys” by The Pretenders

Chrissy!

“Leave It Til Tomorrow” by The Plastic Pals

The Plastic Pals from Sweden make great Rock and Roll.

“Unclothed” by The Danbury Lie

A new release from The Danbury Lie is always a cause for celebration.  If he was from the south, this song would be called “Nekkid” 🙂

“Under the Influence of Meat Puppets” by fIREHOSE

I’ve spend many ours under the influence of Meat Puppets…

“Real Cool Time” by The Stooges

Iggy!

“Precious” by The Pretenders

You are so Precious…

“Raindrops” by IAMEVE

Cool Indie/SythPop from… well the bio says they are from The Fifth Dimension. I dig it.

“Feeling the Elephant” by Bill Lloyd

The title track from the classic Bill Lloyd solo record.  Nashville rock par excellence.

“Honky Tonk Women” by The Rolling Stones

For all the gin soaked bar room queens in Memphis…

“Careless” by The Replacements

I could Care less…

“No Joke” by Boxed In

Electronic music from London.

“It’s Hard to Make Love to an American” by Ike Reilly

This song was (apparently) featured on Sons of Anarchy.  It’s a good one.

“Brass in Pocket” by The Pretenders

A classic from my MTV influenced youth.  Music Television that is…

“Don’t Turn Me Away” by Young America

My friends in Young America have a new single and new album coming soon.  This is an older song I grabbed when I first met them.  Get on board now with this awesome band.

“Blunderbuss” (Jack White cover) by Rosie Flores

I was fortunate enough to see Rosie Flores last Friday.  She is a legend.  No video for this one, so I found another cover which she played last week.

“Scenery Going By” by Reverend Horton Heat

I also so the Rev on the same bill…  Wild show and great music… Pow!

Greetings from chilly, overcast Nashville, home of the hit television series and a bunch of other things, too.   Well, this could very well be the final Music Shuffle from my current cellular telephone.  A new phone is scheduled to arrive today, and if all goes as planned, we will begin a new era of superior music shuffling here at Ear2theGround.

Meanwhile, as you know (you do know, don’t you?) we load up the memory card with fresh tracks on Monday nights. We had some fun selecting songs this week and some of the fruits of our fun make an appearance in this morning’s shuffle. Shall we?

While, we don’t highlight it as we once did, here at Ear2theGround, we dig a cool cover version.  We have a good one for you today to lead off our Morning Shuffle:  How about legendary Phoenix band, Meat Puppets with a song from a 1981 compilation album covering a song from Neil Young’s second studio album (and his first with Crazy Horse).  Herewith, please find enclosed for your enjoyment, Meat Puppets doing their version of The Losing End from the album Keats Rides a Harley, which is a cover of  the Neil Young and Crazy Horse song which appeared first in 1969 on the album Everybody Knows This is Nowhere.

How about Elvis doing The Losing End

I know absolutlely nothing about our next band. But, we do have another cover.  This one is a cover of the Rolling Stone’s classic Paint It, Black  and is performed by a band called The Insurgency from a Stone’s tribute album called Exiled Again.  I found a band called The Insurgency on Facebook, but I do not believe it is the same band.  This band apparently has done several tribute albums on Cherry Red Records.  In any event, here is the album:

Here is the real deal since I couldn’t find a video of the cover…

California punk band, White Flag are up next with their contribution to the 1987 compilation Rat Music for Rat People Vol. III called Kitchen Diaster.

Here is another White Flag song from the same era.

And, we close things out with a change in direction of sorts with one of the bands currently in the running for Band of the Month – The Ugly Club with an acoustic version of  their song Last Evenings from their recent, Songs from a 10th Street Apartment.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Isolated Incident Mix

Yeah, yeah, yeah… blah… it’s f**king Wednesday and where does the time go when it goes away.  I’m just randomly typing words, and if they make sense, it’s not my fault.  In other news, I have no news.

________________________________________________________________________________

This morning some pretty cool songs to lead us into the day:

First up we have the title track from Sam Phillips 1992 album Cruel Inventions which produced by her husband at the time T Bone Burnett. I’m pretty sure I saw her live back around the time this album came out, but my memory is failing me, and I’ll have to check with Rex Silo (as if he has any more working brain cells than I do) to confirm it.  In any event, this is a great album that totally does not sound 20 years old to me.

Trivia: Sam Phillips appeared in the 1995 film Die Hard with a Vengeance.

Next up we have Jolie Holland from her 2004 album Escondida with a song called, Goodbye California. To the best of my knowledge, Jolie Holland did not appear in the 1995 film Die Hard with a Vengeance.
And finally, we wrap up the morning shuffle with a bonus track from the 2011 reissue of the The Rolling Stones’ classic album Some Girls. No Spare Parts  features some newly recorded vocals by Mick Jagger who despite doing some acting in his career alas also did not appear in the 1995 film Die Hard with a Vengeance.

Bruce Willis returns as misfit cop John McClane in the third film in the Die Hard series. McClane has fallen on hard times; after moving to New York City and breaking up with his wife, he’s developed a drinking problem and has been suspended from the NYPD. However, his past comes back to haunt him in the form of Simon (Jeremy Irons), a terrorist bomber who has been using McClane as his contact as he plants a series of bombs in public places and gives McClane inane “clues” to their whereabouts in the form of riddles and bizarre games. McClane soon discovers he’s been involved in Simon’s scheme as part of a personal grudge; while associated with an international terrorist group, Simon is also the brother of the man McClane threw off the side of a skyscraper several years back (in the original Die Hard). Now McClane, with the help of a Harlem shopkeeper named Zeus (Samuel L. Jackson), has to find out where Simon has planted the bombs, guess where he’ll strike next, and try to find his base of operations before more bombs go off and thousands of people die. The supporting cast features Graham Greene and Colleen Camp; singer Sam Phillips made her acting debut as a member of Simon’s terrorist group (Phillips never speaks, so as to not to reveal her Texas accent). ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Camp Crystal Lake Mix

The songs (not the recordings) in today’s shuffle are an average of 44 years old.  Our set includes two classics from my youth and two recent covers of songs from before my youth.

Sex and Dying in High Society by X is from their debut Los Angeles.  “So you marry your daddy
with a different name”

Please Do Not Go by Violent Femmes from their eponymous debut. “Tell ya, man, I’m stuck on this lovely girl Of course to me, she mean all t’ world”

Love in Vain performed here by our good friends You & Me is a cover of a 1937 Robert Johnson song which was also covered by The Stones on Let It Bleed.  “Well I followed her to the station
With a suitcase in my hand”

The Ocean performed here by Laura Veirs and her husband Tucker Martine (as Mount Analog) is a cover of the Led Zeppelin song from House of the Holy. Trivia: Tucker Martine (like my friend Rex Silo moved from Nashville to Boulder, Colorado). “Singing in the sunshine, laughing in the rain.
Hitting on the moonshine, rocking in the brain.”

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – If a Tree… Mix

Here we go into another week. Couch by Couchwest has come to an end, but you can relive the glory here:
We got 10 songs this a.m. so let’s get to it:

UK band, The xx are up first with VCR from the album xx. Be Kind and Rewind…

Next up is Portland, Oregon band Loch Lomond with the lovely Elephants & Little Girls.

East LA band Los Lobos have been around since the mid 70s, but their breakthrough came in 1984 with release of the T-Bone Burnett produced How Will the Wolf Survive?  We have A Matter of Time today which I actually converted from a vinyl copy of the out of print Slash Records compilation Slash Cuts.

In typical random fashion, Bruce Springsteen’s spare solo album Nebraska was the first CD I purchased (a few days before I bought my first CD player).  Atlantic City is our track today.

Beggars Banquet was released in 1968 and was the 7th studio album by the Rolling Stones.  Street Fighting Man  is just a great song.
The Sea and Cake come from Chicago.  Up on the Northshore from The Moonlight Butterfly album is a beautiful song that I fell in love with instantly.

Nashville’s own Will Kimbrough (via Mobile, Alabama) fights against his Southern upbringing by deciding to be Less Polite a politically charged song from his politically charged album Americanitis. (Hint: This album is unlikely to be played at a Tea Party Rally).

I honestly didn’t know until I started writing this post that Sam Prekop was in The Sea and Cake.  It makes sense, though.  Up above we have a link to an earlier release by Sam Prekop.  The song today, Arizona comes from a film called Pavilion by Tim Sutton.  Mr. Prekop contributed to the score. You can download your own copy of Arizona and stream another track called The Eve.  Stereogum will hook you up – here.

“Don’t forget the Motor City…”  Outrageous Cherry have been around for ten years and have nine full-length albums to their credit.  Thanks to Beyond Beyond is Beyond and Bang Bang Boogaloo for turning me on to the band. Today’s track, Unbalanced in the City is off of the band’s latest album Seemingly Solid Reality.
And finally, Magnolia Electric Co. have been absent from the public since 2009 due to on-going personal issues of founder Jason Molina. You can find out more about that  – here. We have the amazing song, Whip-Poor-Will from the album Josephine.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Cheer Up Sleepy Jean Mix

I wish I had some Monkees’ music in my MP3 player. I may have to remedy that soon.  As we remember Davy Jones, we remember the cultural phenomenon and cool music of this made for TV band of days gone by.  There have been some amazing tributes written by a wide variety of musical artists.  Say hey!

Late – so let’s get onto the list.

I created a spur-of-the-moment randomish playlist from which to shuffle and I’m pleased with the results:

First up, Rocks Off is off the uber-classic Rolling Stones album, Exile on Main Street. It captures the loose, filthy rock and roll music the band was making at that time.
“I’m zipping through the days at lightning speed.
Plug in, flush out and fire the f**kin’ feed.
Heading for the overload,
Splattered on the dirty road,
Kick me like you’ve kicked before,
I can’t even feel the pain no more.” – Jagger/Richards

<—-Holy crap – you can download the 2010 Remastered version of Exile for just $2.99 at Amazon.com!!!

Me and a friend once drove 80 or so miles in a convertible with the top down in a drizzle to see the next  band in the daily shuffle.  Will and the Bushmen were from Mobile, Alabama before settling in Nashville. Later Will’s and my life would intersect in a most unexpected way.  Can’t Turn Back the Clock was on the band’s 1991 album Blunderbuss (not to be confused with the new Jack White album of the same name – unless in your confusion you check out Will and the Bushmen, in which case be confused).

<—–Blunderbuss by Will and the Bushmen – buy the CD at Amazon.com

Off! makes classic West Coast punk rock for the 21st Century.  Not surprising since the lead singer is ex-Black Flag/Circle Jerk Keith Morris.  I

Finally, we bring you some classic Jamaican sounds from 1968. It’s Toots and the Maytals with title track from their album Sweet and Dandy. Go ahead and prepare to feel the movin’ and the groovin’.

Black Flag: Live Black Flag: Live
Although Black Flag was unquestionably one of the greatest and most explosive live rock bands of all time, few of the band’s shows were documented on video before its breakup in 1987. Although the band only managed two British tours during its existence,

Toots & the Maytals’ edition of 20th Century Masters is a very good summation of the group’s greatest songs and therefore, their very importance. This doesn’t have every great song they’ve ever done, and is not as comprehensive as other overviews assemble

Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street Rolling Stones – Exile on Main Street
18-song matching folio to the classic Stones album features transcriptions of: Rocks Off * Tumbling Dice * Let It Loose * All Down The Line * Stop Breaking Down * Casino Boogie * Torn and Frayed * Black Angel * Loving Cup * Happy * Soul Survivor * Shake Your Hips * Rip This Joint * and more. Also includes photos.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – 3.5 Degrees Mix

I read somewhere that due to the explosive of social networking – primarily Facebook, the degrees of separation between all human beings has been reduced from 6 to 3.5.  I have no idea if that is true, but it sounds right.  It is always odd when a “Friend Suggestion” comes up and the person and I have mutual friends who come from entirely different parts of my life.

This also falls in line with my philosophy that music is all about connections, and that no matter how diverse and random my music collection is, there is always a way to connect any one artist to another.

First up, Have Mercy is a stand-out track on the Jack White produced Van Lear Rose by Loretta Lynn. What a great collaboration this turned out to be.

<—– Loretta Lynn – Van Lear Rose (amazon.com)

Loretta Lynn: Still Woman Enough: A MemoirLoretta Lynn: Still Woman Enough: A Memoir
Loretta Lynn’s first memoir, Coal Miner’s Daughter, was a #1 national bestseller that sparked an Oscar-winning movie and left fans hungry for more. Now Loretta finishes that story, and the second half of her life is every bit as remarkable and inspiring as the first. In a friendly, down-home style that belies her stature as country music’s most celebrated performer, Loretta writes candidly about the price of fame and the stresses of stardom; tells of friends and family she’s loved and lost along the way; and shares secrets not included in her first book. But at the heart of this memoir is her stormy relationship with Doo, the man she married at thirteen and stayed with until he died, through his drinking, their violent arguments, and their passionate reconciliations. Loretta reveals the devotion behind “one of the hardest love stories in the world.” Filled with intimate portraits of country legends, and brimming with folksy humor, this personal tale of grit, determination, and loyalty will enthrall Loretta’s countless fans and anyone who adores a good old-fashioned love story.

Next up is the hard to google band called The Men – they released a stunning album called Leave Home in 2011 and have a new album due out in early March called Open Your Heart. They play hard, loud music with compromise. Today we have a stand out track from the Leave Home LP “( )”.
  <—The Men – Leave Home (amazon.com)

Finally, completing our interesting three song shuffle and proving that the drugs were really good or really bad back in the mid sixties, we have a track whose working title was Tough Apple, but which ended up being called 2000 Light Years from Home and it comes from the Stones’ album Their Satanic Majesties Request.
