Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Alone in a Crowd Mix

The end of a long strange week… we have a pretty nifty mix of old and new music of various styles and moods and subjects… all making a cohesive morning shuffle…

“Painted On Attitude” by T. Hardy Morris

An October 2014 single from T. Hardy Morris of Dead Confederate.  He is part of the new project Diamond Rugs along with members of Deer Tick and Steve Berlin of Los Lobos.  Diamond Rugs has a Noisetrade release that includes this track and some music from Deer Tick.

“Blue Light of the Fire” by Heather Powell

Heather Powell’s new album A Haze of Grays and Blues is out (this week).  This song is from her previous album Believe it to Life. A new version of this song (same lyrics,  different tune) is on the new album as “Blue Light”.  The video included is a recent live version of that new song.

“Lost in the Cosmos (Song for Chris Bell)” by Sons of Bill

A song for the late Big Star member whose classic solo album was released some 14 years after his tragic 1978 death at age 27.  The song is on Love and Logic the most recently album by Virginia band Sons of Bill.

Another classic track from R.E.M.’s second album Reckoning.

“Never Talking to You Again” by Husker Du

Nashville’s favorite instrumental steel guitar driven surf rock band from the debut album 615 to Fame. I have been following Jeremy Fetzer and Spencer Cullum Jr. since I saw them play with Caitlin Rose a few years ago.

“The Long Run Out” by The Unforgiven

You don’t know how good it feels to say a new song from The Unforgiven.  The Unforgiven was an 80s band that by all rights should have been huge.  They had the look and the sound, they were larger than life and seemed to have stepped right out of a Spaghetti Western. To call them a Big Guitar band is an amazing understatement.  Circumstances being what they were and are, their sole, self-titled album ended up being their only release.  In 2012, the band reformed for a show at Stagecoach Festival and in 2014 their album was finally given a new release.  This song was a bonus track recorded around the time of the 2012 reunion, and it is pure The Unforgiven.  If you (like way too many) missed out on this band the first time around or haven’t had a heard them in a long time, climb on board.  Hang ’em High!

Heather Powell’s next album “A Haze of Grays and Blues” is due out at the end of this month, and what I’ve heard of it is stunning.  The song featured today is a stand out track from her 2012 album Believe it to Life.

From his album Live My Life which was recorded at Fry Pharmacy an all analog studio here in Nashville, Voodoo Doll is the kind of no holds barred Blues that you will hear on the latest album from this Nashville legend.

Science! are from Seattle! and they play Music!  Why am I so excited?  Give a listen and find out.  Alcoves and Alleyways is out now.  If you want, you can check out a sampler from the album via Noisetrade and then once convinced, pick up the whole thing at the usual spots.  They’ve been on Couch by Couchwest which makes them good eggs in my book….

Our last taste of the fantastic Grant Peeples’ album Punishing the Myth. I got this CD when I met Grant after he played the Wild Ponies party during Americana week – at The Building in East Nashville.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Tilt-a-Whirl Mix

Well! The impromptu debut of Ear to the Ground Presents: at The Building last night was a huge success or at least a hell of a lot of fun with some awesome music. Thanks to Darrin Bradbury for doing all the leg work, and to The Western Shore, Sarah Potenza, Jon Latham, and Darrin and The Fran’s Eastside Super High Band for bringing the awesome tunes.  Hopefully, this will be a semi-regular thing in 2015.

“I Can’t Find My Keys” by Bobby Rush from Rush Hour

From classic Country to some classic Rhythm and Blues, Soul, Funk music from the Louisiana bluesman. Groovy song which reminds me of line from The Rainmakers’ song, “The generation that would save the world is still looking for its car keys”.

“Upper Mississippi River Valley Blues” by Ike Reilly from Am I Still the One for You?

Ike Reilly evokes memories of county fairs of my youth and the mysterious activities that happened along the fence line… and those rides…

“Saint Mary’s” by American Aquarium from Burn.Flicker.Die.

I feel like I running out of ways to say how much I love American Aquarium.  I want to say this is one of my favorite songs on this album, but I think I’ve said that before, too.  If you aren’t on board with this band, get to it!

“Distant One” by Heather Powell from A Haze of Grays and Blue

An awesome track from the forthcoming album from Heather Powell recorded with a bunch of the True Groove All-Stars.  An amazing voice backed by some incredible musicians.  It really doesn’t get any better.

“Waffle House (Take 2)” by Darrin Bradbury from When a Car Becomes a House

This is the version of Waffle House that ended up on the When a Car Becomes a House collection.  The previous one I featured was Take One and didn’t make it to the collection. I don’t know the difference between the two versions, but Darrin does, and that is all that matters. “Do I use my phone or does my phone use me?” 

“Never Be the Same Again” by The Torn Images from Reviver

We close out the day with another track from the debut full-length by California Indie Rock artist The Torn Images. A pretty awesome take on “classic” alternative hard rock music. Dig it!

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – The Drifting Mix

I am thinking about starting a new weekly post or something promoting the #E2TG recommended  shows around Nashville each week.  I have not decided upon a format or anything, but if you have suggestions or events for consideration, hit me up.

In the meantime, get ready to kick off the last full week before Christmas with a pretty awesome show at The Building in East Nashville tonight.  It is Open Road Monday.  Doors open at 7:00 with music starting at 8:00.  The show features The Western Shore, Sarah Potenza, Darrin Bradbury and Jon Latham.  An open mic follows so bring you guitars and songs down and dig it. The BLDG is BYOB or you can cross the patio to Drifter’s BBQ and bring something back. The Building is at 1008 #C Woodland Street right behind Drifter’s. Come out for some Ear to the Ground recommended musical offerings..

I really dig this song off of the album Burn. Flicker. Die. It’s been playing quite often on my music player. It may just be my favorite track on this album which is full of great songs.

“Runnin’ Away” by Heather Powell

I’m about 90% sure this was a song that I already featured that got added back when I had my playlist delete incident. If so, you may have missed it or like me, you may be very happy to hear it again.  This is from Believe it to Life.  Her latest album, A Haze of Grays and Blues is due out in early 2015 on the True Groove label out of New York City.

“Car Cleveland” by John Lurie

I am a huge fan of director Jim Jarmusch.  This track comes from the Soundtrack of Jarmusch’s 1984 film Stranger Than Paradise which stars John Lurie who also wrote the music for the film. 

“All I Do is Wonder” by D.C. Bloom

This may well be one of the most beautiful songs I’ve heard in a long time. It is listed as Unreleased on his ReverbNation page.  If this is still the case, I hope it will end up on album soon.  In the meantime, head over to his Website and signup.

“Shores” by Lindsay Ellyn

Okay, New York, you better enjoy Lindsay while you have her because Nashville wants her back!  I have this feeling (and I am not the only one) that 2015 is going to be a big year for Lindsay.  She has new music coming out in the new year, and I’ve been lucky enough to have heard some of it performed live… get on board the Lindsay express early or else I will tell you that I told you so.  This one his from her Shores EP.

“It’s Too Late to Live in Austin” by Grant Peeples and the Peeples Republik

Another song that has been coming up fairly often on my music player.  A great song that references a midnight show of James McMurtry and his band.  Another one from the awesome album, Punishing the Myth.

“Trim Your Tree” by Jimmy Butler

With a hat tip to David Horton (Popa Tunes) we offer up another highly suggestive and inappropriate Christmas song from days of yore. This song from the album, “I’m Gonna Lasso Santa Claus.”  Mojo Nixon covered this song in the early 90s on his album Horny Holidays.

“Samson in New Orleans” by Leonard Cohen

And we close things out with a song from the latest album from Leonard Cohen – called Popular Problems.

Expect a real deal new album from Darrin Bradbury in 2015.  In the meantime, he recently released a new collection of demos including this place-name dropping song.  The collection also includes the crowd-pleasing hit song, “Junkie Love”.

“Whatever Happened to the Girl in Me” by Ike Reilly from Am I Still the One for You?/Sparkle in the Finish

From the 2004 album by The Ike Reilly Assassination…  another great song. 

“Zombies in Disneyland” (Original Album Version) by Doctor and the Crippens from Raphanadosis

A cheerful 80s British Punk Rock number that apparently has flown under the radar of the lawyers for Walt and Co…. I hope this exposure doesn’t change that… (*read last statement with a note of sarcasm – okay?).  Anyway, this song pre-dates the current Zombie phenomenon by about a quarter of a century.

“That’s No Way” by Sidestreet Reny and Lil’ bell from Holler

Holler is a great tribute to North Mississippi Blues.  This is a cover of a Robert Wilkins song.  Wilkins was from Hernando, Mississippi and was a contemporary of Son House and Memphis Minnie in the 1920s in Memphis.

“Whiskey Man” by Heather Powell from Believe it To Life

“Now that’s some damn drinking music right there…”  A sultry number that takes me back to some smoky bar from the 1930s or 40s as recreated on the holodeck in Star Trek: The Next Generation…  okay, so I’m a nerd and my cultural references are a bit skewed… I love this song… I love what I’ve heard of her new album, too.

“Whatever Gets You By” by The Features from Old Familiar Melodies – 2008-2013/Some Kind of Salvation

“Hesitate” by Judah and the Lion from Sweet Tennessee

A great Nashville band that has been getting a lot of attention.  I recently found out that Judah is the son of two people who were a year behind me at my high school. To my knowledge, I have no connection to the Lion.  The band will be supporting Mat Kearney on his Spring 2015 tour which includes a stop at the historic Ryman in Nashville, Tennessee.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Roots Reality Mix

I had the great pleasure last night of venturing to one my favorite spots in East Nashville – The Family Wash for their regular Tuesday night Short Sets, and I got to see Joe Nolan perform.  He has been featured a couple of times recently here at E2TG, and it was great to hear him play live and to finally meet him in person…

Due to some unforeseen and unfortunate events, I am shorter than usual on time for today’s shuffle…   So let’s do what we can with what we have to work with… a stunningly diverse and awesome shuffle today…

A rabbit hole that began with a Peacefork blog post lead me to this bit of wonderful African music from Mahmoud Ahmed of Ethiopia.  We are all one people and I believe that is why true roots music of any culture moves us all if we are willing to listen.

“Girl on a Cable” by Darrin Bradbury for A Car Becomes a House

It was of little surprise when I learned that Darrin Bradbury grew up in a circus. If you have the chance to meet him, you will see what I mean.  This song seems to draw upon that experience, and it is an excellent example of what makes Darrin’s music so damn awesome.

“Big Road” by Sidestreet Reny and Lil’ Bell from Holler

Another great track from the new Sidestreet Reny album Holler.

“Gone is Going” by Hugh Trimble from neighborpoem

The more I hear from Hugh Trimble, the more I am impressed.  The word that kept coming to my mind with this song was rollicking. Check out his album neighborpoems at Bandcamp.

“Roots Reality” by Sidestreet Reny from Tonal Tonics and Musical Elixers

While we are on second songs from earlier albums let’s continue with this one from the album Tonal Tonics and Musical Elixers.  I think I’ve mentioned a couple of times that Sidestreet Reny was a rapper before he turned to the Blues. This song moves that information from the realm of trivial fact into startling reality.  This is amazing vocal and musical work.  As I was listening, I just kept smiling and saying, “Yes!”.

We close things out with some chunky dream popish music from Austin, Texas. A great way to close out a wild and wooly shuffle.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Jack Chick vs. Twin Peaks with a Twist Mix

I had a great night hanging out with a bunch of friends at a venerated Music Row bar and watching about a dozen or more of those friends make awesome music….

We have a delightful shuffle today with some cool songs and some cool pop culture references.  The shuffle contains old and new music of differing genres and points of view all existing in some semblance of harmony on my phone’s music player.   If these songs can all keep along, why can’t we?

“Twin Peaks Twist” by Messer Chups from Heretic Channel

It’s a good sign on a cold, snowy Monday morning when the shuffle begins with experimental music from Russia/Germany in the form of a mash-up of sorts of the Twin Peaks theme with The Twist? or least with a surf rock backbeat.  From Messer Chups’ 2009 album.

“San Francisco Girl” by Joe Nolan from Plain Jane

Our second listen to Nashville writer Joe Nolan.  This is a song about one of my favorite cities (even if I have only been to it a couple of time).  There is something almost Dylanesque about this song – I really liked it. Joe Nolan will be playing Short Sets at The Family Wash tomorrow night.

“Waiting” by The Style Council from The Singular Adventures of the Style Council/The Cost of Loving

A tenderer side of Paul Weller with this song from the band’s 1987 third album.

“Bunker” (Acoustic NoiseTrade Exclusive) by Heath McNease from Fort Wayne

Another awesome acoustic song from Heath McNease  from a collection of songs inspired by his film Fort Wayne.

“California (There is No End to Love)” by U2 from Songs of Innocence

Beginning with bits of “Barbara Ann”, a promisingly different sounding song from U2’s infamous new album.  I actually like this song.

A recent thrift store find – the debut album from Gary Louris and company.  Some solid songwriting – even as the band had not yet found their signature sound.

I was fortunate enough to get hold of a few songs from True Groove recording artist Heather Powell’s next album, A Haze of Grays and Blues (due out in the first part of 2015).  From what I’ve heard so far, this is going to a must have album.  A powerful song

I was reminded of Tex and the Horseheads after recently watching the 1987 film Border Radio in which Texala Jones plays a pretty funny (if irresponsible) babysitter.  I found this from what I think is a 2011 reunion EP.  Sounds great.

“Jack T. Chick and the Long Hand of Satan” by The Radicals from Halloween Rhymes and Children’s Crimes

As a long time… eh um… fan/collector of Jack Chick’s religious tracts, this track which seemingly features some audio of Mr. Chick caught my attention.  Beware the Long Hand of Satan….

“King Harvest (Has Surely Come)” by The Band from The Band

And we close out our first shuffle of the week with the song that closes out The Band’s self-titled second album. It doesn’t get much better than this….

Time to ease into a new week, a new month, and for some of us a new time structure – as Daylight Savings Time ends and Standard Time begins.  It’s Monday…  Let’s do this shuffle thing…

From his 2008 album, we have Nashville songwriting icon Tommy Womack (Government Cheese, Daddy) with a powerful song about a serious issue – domestic violence.  I could not find a video of this song, so I picked a version of one of my favorite Tommy Womack songs – The Replacements.

True Groove recording artist Heather Powell, just recently released her latest album, A Haze of Grays and Blue.  Today, we have the first of two tracks from her previous album Believe it to Life.  Such a powerhouse vocalist!

I’ve been hearing a whole bunch about Kelsey Waldon, and I see a bunch of my Facebook friends are Facebook friends with her.  Finally, getting a chance to check out her music, and so far, I am digging it bunches. This here is a fine, fine song.   She is based in Nashville.

And we close out our first shuffle to November with a nifty song from Tennessee-based band The Features.  From my You Tube search it appears that this song was featured in the television show Degrassi.  At least in some incarnation of the long running, multiple generational, multiple incarnated series about teens.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Turtles, Roses, and Kisses Mix

I failed to post a shuffle yesterday – I listened to a shuffle and it was a good one, but time didn’t allow me to post – so the songs go back into the hopper and will come out in some other interesting combination.

Truth be told – life is unpredictable and pretty darn right amazing when you stop to pay attention to the seemingly random occurrences which are going on around you every day. Truth be told – I would never have placed my self voluntarily in the situation in which I currently find myself, but since I’m here… I have to say…. I’m right in the place that I am supposed to be…

A pretty sweet evening/night of music on both side of the river in Nashville on a Tuesday in October.  Saw a song swap featuring two of my musical heroes from my college days – Bill Lloyd and Webb Wilder along with the always amazing Tim Carroll.

Crossed the river for some Vegetarian Shepherd’s Pie and a Pint of fine beer to check out some amazing music including: Drew Kohl, Julie Christensen and her band, and the Dan Montgomery Band.

Let’s do this shuffle thing – okay?

“Threads of Measure” by Brown Bird from Fits of Reason

The first of three great songs by this amazing band.  The death of David Lamb was a great loss to the world.

I am so impressed by the incredible variety and volume of music being produced under the True Groove Record label.  Kudos to Tomas Doncker and Marla Mase – along with everyone else involved.  If you haven’t, check out all of the True Groove artists out… there isn’t a bad place to start so start right here.  The video I picked for this song features the amazing Heather Powell performing with the True Groove All-Stars.

“Road to Joy” by The Grimm Generation from The Big Fame

One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite albums by some of my favorite people. It’s a Grimm season – so get Grimm.  The Road to Joy is paved with… something.  Heck, I don’t know.  But this song is great!

“Comes With Kisses” by Deena from Rock River

This wraps up the Rock River album, and it ends with this cool song.  I will be publishing my review of this album soon – so stayed tuned to Ear to the Ground.

Tuesday Afternoon Music Shuffle – Faraway Beach Mix

Weird morning, got stuck in traffic so my Morning Shuffle would have been about 24 songs.  So, I did an afternoon shuffle instead.  The morning shuffle would have been epic, but I don’t have time or energy to do it justice.

Connecticut E2TG Faves – The Big Fame – a great record.  Video of a newer song about a political family from Massachusetts.  Two states that I always had trouble spelling.


“It” by Prince from Sign O’ The Times

Another thrift store find from this weekend.  Prince.  Prince has pretty much cleared YouTube of his music, so all we have is a cover of this song.  The little bit I listened to sounded pretty good. If you listen to it all and disagree – leave a comment.  I rarely get comments directly on the blog. I like comments.  “If…” is a movie directed my Lindsay Anderson and starring Malcolm McDowell that was released in 1968.  That movie and this song are not related as far as I know – in fact they have different but titles, but I just thought I would mention the 1968 movie to impress you with my knowledge of 1960s British Cinema.  


“Evil Girls” by Escondido from Deer Head Music Presents: Indie Mixtape Nashville/The Ghost of Escondido

From a recent mixtape featuring Indie Music from Nashville – available for a limited time on NoiseTrade,  It can be assumed then, that Escondido are an Indie band from Nashville, but assuming makes an ass of u and me, so I visited the band’s Facebook page.  They are indeed from Nashville (which I knew), and although they do not use the term “indie” on their bio (unless I missed), I am going to go out on a limb and risk being an ass and make the assumption.  Regardless of all that, this is a bitching tune, and I recommend looking into them further – as will I.  


“Every Little Bit” by Heather Powell from Believe it to Life

Heather Powell is part of the True Groove record label out of New York.  Her music always brings a sense of class and sophistication to the shuffle.  If you are in the New York area and get a chance to check out any of the True Groove artists – do so!


“Hymn for the Road (Walmart Dirge)” by Darrin Bradbury from Death in my Left Ear

You might expect me to make some crack about class and sophistication as a transition from the Heather Powell song to Darrin Bradbury, but I’m not going to do it.  The past few months have been an extremely unusual, difficult, and amazing chapter in my life, and I count myself fortunate that my friendship with Darrin Bradbury has been a big part of this.  Besides, we don’t have enough dirges anymore – let alone Walmart Dirges…

Arturo Stalteri is a Post Minimalismo romantico from Rome, Italy.  This is a lovely rendition of a Brian Eno composition.

1/2 of the duo The Fiery Furnaces – a lovely song from her 2013 solo album.  DIsclaimer: Ear to the Ground does not recommend staring into the sun without proper equipment, and even then only under the direct supervision of an experienced sun starer.
