Welcome to the working week….   Heading into an unusual week – I am off Wednesday – before that I have a busy week, after that I have a busy week.  Wednesday will probably we busy, too.

Friday night, I saw two Jon’s at The Family Wash. First Jon Byrd and then Jon Langford. Very different sets, but both offering unique and interesting takes on Country music.  In between, I got to spend a little time with some East Nashville friends at my friend Bob’s birthday bash.

Saturday night, Human Radio at The 5 Spot (they are in the shuffle today so more later about that), and then to the Wash again for Lisa Oliver Gray’s birthday show. The amazing singer had a killer band that included Tommy Womack and Ross Rice (of Human Radio) among others.

Tonight, back to the Wash again for a stellar night of music featuring Brock Zeman with Blair Hogan and Darrin Bradbury featuring Megan Palmer.  Starts at 7:00 – you do not want to miss it.  Later, Brian Wright is playing the Basement with a killer band and with Lilly Hiatt and Jesse Lafser opening.

“Chapel Hill Boogie” by John Dee Holeman

Via the Music Maker Relief Foundation – some Piedmont Blues from one of the living legends of the style.

“The Bridges I’ve Burned” by Reckless Johnny Wales

Another great track from American Heart.  I love some of the lines of this song.  Reckless Johnny is one of those larger than life musical figures who you can see quite often around Nashville. 

“Table Rock” by Angela Easterling

One of my personal favorites from Angela Easterling’s Common Law Wife album. 

“Above the Surface” by Bang OK Bang

From a live album recorded at an East Nashville Underground show… Bang OK Bang are a sludgy hard rocking band from Nashville. This song and this recording remind me so much of the independent, local music I grew up listening to… but it is thoroughly modern in all the best ways, which makes it doubly exciting to me.

“Harder to Lie” (Live at Eastside Manor) by David Ramirez

Sticking with recordings made on the east side of Nashville… This recording by Austin-based singer-songwriter David Ramirez sounds gorgeous and it’s a great song, too.

“Electromagnetism” by Human Radio

As I mentioned, I got to take in the Human Radio show this past Saturday night.  They did a good job mixing their classic tracks with some material from their forthcoming new album. The new songs sounded great.  The thing I have always loved about this band is their ability to combine instruments in a unique way and their ability to hit a groove like very few bands can do.  Fun show!  Great music.  Get ready for the new album, and in the mean time, seek out their classic self-titled album which includes this song and tons of other great ones.

“Fly Me Courageous” by Drivin’ n Cryin’ with Audley Freed

Someone here in town, dubbed this past summer as the Summer of Kevn Kinney.  Kinney made several notable appearances around town including a month-long residency at The 5 Spot.  Audley Freed (Black Crowes, Sheryl Crow) joined for at least one of those shows. Kinney will be back in Nashville December 5 with his band Drivin’ n Cryin’.  Warner Hodges will filling the guitar slot and Jason Isbell guitarist Sadler Vaden is the special guest.  I don’t know if Audley Freed will be in town, but if he is, I would not be surprised if he jumped on stage… maybe for this song which was one of the legendary Georgia band’s best known songs and the title track to their 1991 album.

“Minutes Into Hours” by Katie Mac

Katie Mac is a 20 year old singer-songwriter from Liverpool. I really dig this track which I could not find anywhere on-line, but here is a link to her Facebook page if you want to check her out.

“Airstream Transmission” (Live) by Leland Sundries

We close things out with another track from Brooklyn band, Leland Sundries. The song is on a live album called Live at the Creamery.  Check them out!

Monday!  It is AMA week in Nashville… which means it is like a typical music week in Nashville on steroids. Welcome everyone visiting our fair city this week. 

The week got off to a rousing start with East Nashville Songwriters Club in loft at Mad Donnas on the East side.  Sammy Brue pretty much blew everyone away with a late addition opening slot.  He was followed by the regularly scheduled Brian Johannesen, Joshua Black Wilkins, and Kristina Murray who all absolutely killed!

Tonight is the Kevin Gordon CD Release Show at City Winery Nashville with Sarah Potenza opening and lots of special guests.

Let’s get this week started right with a shuffle…

“Kicked Around” by Telepathic Teddy Bear

Our second to the last song from the album Forgiveness.  I dig this song – as I do almost all of what Telepathic Teddy Bear does… and what a great name!

“Acceleration” by Drivin’ N’ Cryin’

The Atlanta Georgia based band, Drivin’ N’ Cryin’ last released a full-length record in 2009. Since then, they are released a series of EPs with “Songs” in the title.  This track is from their 2012 EP called Songs About Cars, Space and the Ramones.  Ironically, I was sitting stuck in traffic most of the time this song was playing.

“Where the Face of Angels Lay” by The Jackals

The Jackals are from Edinburgh, Scotland.  This is my first listen and a track from their new album People.  Some good old psychedelic-influenced rock and roll. I dig it.

“What a Way to Go” by Tim Carroll

From Pure As Coal.  I count myself very lucky to have the opportunity to see Tim Carroll every week (at least once).  He is one of Nashville’s best songwriters and guitarists.  He also was our 300th “Like” on Facebook!

“Divisionary (Do the Right Thing)” by Ages and Ages

Another track from the 100 song World Café Sessions download – this one is the title track from the second album by Portland, Oregon band Ages and Ages. This was actually my first listen to this band, and I am interested in hearing more.

“What’s Got Wrong With You?” by Webb Wilder

Webb Wilder will be one of Kevin Gordon’s guests tonight at City Winery.  From Wilder’s album, Hybrid Vigor.  I’ve been a Webb Wilder fan for going on 30 years.

“Bury My Body” by Al Kooper and Shuggie Otis

From the 1969 album Kooper Session featuring the legendary Al Kooper and then 15 year old guitar phenom, Shuggie Otis – son of Johnny Otis.  This song is a 9 minute long uplifting celebration of great music.  A big hat tip to Sue Havlish who not only recommended this but sent me the song via iTunes.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Yacht Mix

Last week, one of the daily shuffles was heavily weighted toward Blues music.  Today, things turn more in a Country direction.  Of course this is Ear to the Ground, so it’s never cut and dry… 

“Little Victories” by Chris Knight (with John Prine) from Little Victories

Chris Knight did not play Peter Brady on The Brady Bunch nor is he the noted blogger and filmmaker. He is, however, a talented singer songwriter from Kentucky.  His 2012 album Little Victories featured contributions from Lee Ann Womack and Buddy Miller, and on the title track – John Prine.

“Faxes on a Yacht” by Rival Galaxies from The Entrée: a Build4BBQ Sampler

Rival Galaxies are from Albany, NY, and they bill themselves as “Curators of Dance Parties!!!”  One would be hard pressed to listen to this song and not move to the music.

“Never Felt Before” by Golden Smog from Another Fine Day

Another fine song from Alt-Indie rock supergroup Golden Smog.

“I See Georgia” by Drivin’ N’ Cryin’ from The Great American Bubble Factory

drivin’ N’ cryin’ have been making rocking new Southern Rock since the mid 80s.  Kevn Kinney also made one of my all-time favorite records – MacDougal Blues.  When The Great American Bubble Factory was released in 2009, it was the first full-length studio album for the band in 12 years.  Sometimes/often, I feel like out of place in the South – even though I’ve lived here my whole life, but if this is Southern Rock (and it is) than I think I can hang.

“Beggars’ Guild” by Roadkill Ghost Choir from Slow Knife EP

Heading further down South, we have a great song from Florida band Roadkill Ghost Choir.

“One More Ride” by Joe Sundell from The Hat Thief

Still in the South and moving us back into the Countryish theme, we have Joe Sundell from Austin, Texas with a cool song from his album The Hat Thief.  

“Old Five and Dimers Like Me” by Billy Joe Shaver from Old Five and Dimers Like Me

Fully establishing the Country creds for today’s shuffle – we go all the way back to the beginning of Billy Joe Shaver’s 40+ year career with the title track from his first album. Man! It really doesn’t get much better than this….

“Scarecrow Blues” by Brock Zeman from Songs from the Mud

We close things out and stay in the Country vein with an autumnal sounding track from Canadian singer/songwriter Brock Zeman.
