Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Ding-Dong Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); Be sure to “Like” Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

First of all I have to give a huge shout out to everyone who helped make the inaugural The Finger and Ear to the Ground Presents: The Most Dangerous Game Show a huge success! Big props go to John McCollum and Darrin Bradbury without whom this would not have been possible.  Thanks to everyone who came out.  Thanks to The Building. Thanks to DJ Warbles for spinning great tunes between sets.  To Russell Thompson, Lindsay Ellyn, George Terry McDonald, and our very special guest Bob Dylan I mean Darrin Bradbury.  Let’s do this thing again!

We have a short but sweet shuffle. Only five songs thanks to the seventeen minute opening track… Jump

“Sister Ray” by The Velvet Underground

Coincidently, this song came up in the shuffle on The Velvet Underground’s drummer, Mo Tucker’s birthday!  There are only a handful of songs that I can tolerate for 17 minutes.  This is one of them.  Around the time that my passion for music was really starting to broaden and expand, Polydor Records released several of the Velvet Undergrounds classic albums along with VU a “new” collection of outtakes.  Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side” had been one of the songs that hit me early in my musical journey, and although I knew he had been in a band called Velvet Underground, I had no way (from my small-medium sized town in the middle  of Tennessee) to hear that music.  The saying is that not many people bought the Velvet Underground albums, but that everyone who did formed a band or something like that.  I did not form a band, but nothing was the same for me after I heard The Velvet Underground. They were and to me still are a burst of fresh, dank, dark air. Their subject matter often shocked my suburban sensibilities, and they could be tender one minute and brutal the next.

“Used to Call Me Baby” (Split Lip Rayfield Cover) by The Blind Owl Band

The Blind Owl Band Saranac Lake, New York.  The released the 3 song EP Professionality (COVERS) which in addition to this Split Lip Rayfield song, also contains covers of songs my Man Man and The Devil Makes Three. The EP does a great job of showing off the diverse influences which help to make The Blind Owl Band who they are. This is our final song from the EP… it is delightfully raucous and catchy and fun.  For fun, I included the original Split Lip Rayfield version followed by The Blind Owl Band doing an original song (I could not find a video of them doing this one.

“Meredith Moonshine Land Trust” by Discount Ravioli

So, “Sister Ray” was over 17 minutes long… this one clocks in at around 0:45 seconds. Yet another from the Dord Music Group and their subsidiary(???) Discotime Records. I am not entirely sure what is going on here, but you know what? This and all of the music coming out the Dord compound is helping to restore my hopefulness of the kids of today (in the most weird and twisted way possible).  No video, so I added a Bandcamp widget of this track.  Do listen.

“Sink or Swim” by The Train Set

Another track from Never California.  This album came to me through e-mail, and I am so glad it did.  It is a very tasty slice of 80s era Brit-Pop.  There were so many great bands that came to my attention in that formative phase of my life, and even though I missed out on The Train Set the first time around, hearing it now is like discovering a long buried treasure.

“The Morning in Her” by Raging Fire

Besides The Velvet Underground and Brit-Pop, one of my major musical passions during the 80s was the vibrantly chaotic local music scene bubbling up in Nashville.  The whole thing seemed on the verge of bubbling over in the best way, but for a variety of reasons it never did. Nevertheless, some really awesome bands and music came out of that era.  Raging Fire were one of the best of that time.  I was happy to see recently that they are rereleasing much of their back catalogue and playing a reunion show at the Exit/In on October 3.  Melora Zaner has one of the most original and amazing voices in rock and roll.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Paint the Daytime Black Mix

Good morning, my review of last nights throw down at 3rd and Lindsley with Dave Pahanish and Panfish, Leroy Powell, and George Shingleton is live on No Depression.  In other news, sleep is totally overrated.

Short on time and it’s not Thursday so I can’t do three word Thursday, so let’s do this thing!

“She Belongs to Me” (Bob Dylan cover) by Tom Tom Club

Boom Boom Chi Boom Boom…  Tom Tom Club doing Dylan.  Boom.

“My Uncle, the Violin Shredder” by Batkhi Dahn

Another cool track from Batkhi Dahn. Coincidently, both Chris and Tina from Tom Tom Club and Batkhi Dahn are from Connecticut – along with some other cool folks I know.  Must be something in the water up there.  To avoid reposting the only Batkhi Dahn video I know about, I have reposted the newest video from Batkhi Dahn’s other project, The Foresters (who not coincidentally are also from Connecticut).

“Strictly Reserved for You” by Charles Bradley

Makes me want to create a rule that I must have at least one funk/soul song in a shuffle every week.  This comes off of the Hangout Music Festival Sampler I mentioned earlier this week, and it is also the lead track on Bradley’s 2013 album Victim of Love.

“If Anyone Can Save Me” by Ben Arthur

This is not a drill, all you procrastinators! Today is last day to pick up Ben Arthur’s If You Look for My Heart (book and album) for free on Noisetrade.  Do it!

“The Bullet” (The Devil Makes Three cover) by The Blind Owl Band

E2TG favorites The Blind Owl band released a three song EP of cover songs toward the end of last year. This is the second we have featured.  A pretty cool cover of a The Devil Makes Three song.  Dig it!

“Torito” by Rodrigo y Gabriela

The second track from the Mexican duo’s latest album 9 Dead Alive.

“No Longer Gone” by Meat Puppets

I almost wrote “one of my favorite songs on Forbidden Places”, but I think I have written that at least a half dozen times about different songs on the album.  I could listen to Meat Puppets all day long.

“Since the Day I Was Born” by Sean Watkins

The opening track from Sean Watkins All I Do is Lie.  A tender sounding song.

“I Won’t Look Down” by Telepathic Teddy Bear

Another cool song from Forgiveness. I am so glad that Telepathic Teddy Bear makes such cool music, because I love writing Telepathic Teddy Bear…

“Goshen ’97” by Strand of Oaks

Another opening track, this time from Strand of Oaks latest album HEAL.  A song about growing up on Goshen, Indiana.

“Hang Up” by Peter Murphy!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);

We close out the day’s shuffle with a song from the former lead singer of Bauhaus from his 2014 album Lion.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Gonna Use My Fingers Mix

I am late and I don’t have much time, so I will just leave you with a long mix of music and very little in the way of narration,,,,  enjoy

“Van Helsing Boom Box” (Man Man Cover) by The Blind Owl Band

Friends from Upstate New York covering the amazing Man Man from Philly.

“Where I Belong” by Ben Arthur (Ft. Bobby St. Ours)

I am amazed by the range of music on this album.  A previous track we played featured Aesop Rock. This one has Bobby St. Ours with an Appalachian sound.

“The Night Comes” by Joe Nolan

Another cool song from my friend Joe.  Catch him January 25 at Bobby’s Idle Hour for the next East Side Invasion.

“Tattooed Love Boys” by The Pretenders

Chrissy!

“Leave It Til Tomorrow” by The Plastic Pals

The Plastic Pals from Sweden make great Rock and Roll.

“Unclothed” by The Danbury Lie

A new release from The Danbury Lie is always a cause for celebration.  If he was from the south, this song would be called “Nekkid” 🙂

“Under the Influence of Meat Puppets” by fIREHOSE

I’ve spend many ours under the influence of Meat Puppets…

“Real Cool Time” by The Stooges

Iggy!

“Precious” by The Pretenders

You are so Precious…

“Raindrops” by IAMEVE

Cool Indie/SythPop from… well the bio says they are from The Fifth Dimension. I dig it.

“Feeling the Elephant” by Bill Lloyd

The title track from the classic Bill Lloyd solo record.  Nashville rock par excellence.

“Honky Tonk Women” by The Rolling Stones

For all the gin soaked bar room queens in Memphis…

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); window.amznpubstudioTag = “eartothegro00-20”; http://ps-us.amazon-adsystem.com/domains/eartothegro00-20_3dcd3a52-1a1a-4afe-a2fd-aaba8e251afc.js

“Careless” by The Replacements

I could Care less…

“No Joke” by Boxed In

Electronic music from London.

“It’s Hard to Make Love to an American” by Ike Reilly

This song was (apparently) featured on Sons of Anarchy.  It’s a good one.

“Brass in Pocket” by The Pretenders

A classic from my MTV influenced youth.  Music Television that is…

“Don’t Turn Me Away” by Young America

My friends in Young America have a new single and new album coming soon.  This is an older song I grabbed when I first met them.  Get on board now with this awesome band.

“Blunderbuss” (Jack White cover) by Rosie Flores

I was fortunate enough to see Rosie Flores last Friday.  She is a legend.  No video for this one, so I found another cover which she played last week.

“Scenery Going By” by Reverend Horton Heat

I also so the Rev on the same bill…  Wild show and great music… Pow!

Wide Open Wednesday Shuffle – Summertime Thing Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js

Trying a new thing here at Ear to the Ground…. every Wednesday (or at least this Wednesday… or maybe some Wednesday’s) I am going to Shuffle up all the songs in my phone’s memory and see what happens…  Usually, the Morning Shuffles come from a playlist called “Current Stuff” which includes… well current stuff and basically all the recent adds plus some random stuff to keep things interesting.  Songs are moved off of the playlist as they are featured and new music is added all the time (as memory allows).  Beyond that playlist, I have approximately 4,000+ songs stored in my phone at any given time. As you might expect, it’s a weird collection of some really interesting music that I’ve collected in various ways over the years.  I have to say, the fact that Mary Gauthier and Chuck Prophet were the first two songs that came up… I am feeling optimistic.

“Sideshow” by Mary Gauthier from The Foundling

Mary Gauthier is on a major roll of late, which has included stints at the Grammy Museum and a groundbreaking set at the venerable Grand Ole Opry.  This song is from her album of a couple of years back, The Foundling and demonstrates just how worthy she is of all of the acclaim.

“Summertime Thing” by Chuck Prophet from No Other Love
One of my favorite “summer” songs of all time.  It just makes me feel good every time I hear it.

“Calgary (Live on Triple J)” by Bon Iver from Live at Triple J Studio

from his self-titled 2011 album…

“Real Full-Time Guy” by Drive He Said from Multitudes

Drive He Said was the project formed by Maxim Ludwig when the Santa Fe Seven broke up.  Maxim was one of the very first artists featured on Ear to the Ground back in 2011.  He has since returned to recording under his own name, and in the playlist is a recent performance from Europe.

“Our Last Fight” by Scala and Kolacny Brothers from Scala and Kolacny Brothers

Let me get this straight… Scala is an all-girl choir.  And Kolacny Brothers are actual brothers named Kolacny.   Got it.  Known for their haunting covers of well-known songs, this original goes back to 2007 and their album One Winged Angel.

“Wish You Were Beer” by The Great American Novel from 😦
From their last full-length album 😦 aka The Frown Album.  Frantic and fun…  Random fun fact: as I was listening to this song this morning, I came upon a convoy of Budweiser trucks…

“Knock Knock” by Band of Horses from Mirage Rock

The lead off single from their 2012 album…

“Hands” by Alpine from A is for Alpine

Aussie Indie/Pop… from February 2014’s A if for Alpine.

“Hope” by Royal Court of Chine from Royal Court of China

Nashville legends from their now classic self-titled major label debut.

“Battered Old Bird” by Elvis Costello and the Attractions from Blood and Chocolate

Elvis doing what Elvis does… from 1986 and the classic Attractions line up with Nick Lowe behind the boards again.

“Rhode Island Summer” by The Danbury Lie from The Danbury Lie

Coincidently timely, E2TG favorites The Danbury Lie just announced new music being dropped today on their Bandcamp site.   Today we have this seasonally appropriate song which was recorded in 2009 and released in 2013.

“Little Bit of White Trash” by Jeff Porter from 15 Miles

It’s true…

“Prank Call” by Those Darlins from Stick it In
Nashville band Those Darlins’ 2013 album Blur the Lines was a break-through.  This song is from their 2011 debut album.

“Highways Long” by The Blind Owl Band from This Train I Ride is Made of Wood and Steel
The Blind Owl Band from upstate New York play thoroughly modern music on old timey instruments.  Or maybe it’s the other way around… no I think I had it right the first time.  Whatever, they are awesome!

“A Feather in Your Shadow” by The Lucky Jukebox Brigade from Pretty Well Damned

Another timely song, The Lucky Jukebox Brigade or just days away from releasing their long awaited new album, and we have their latest video in the playlist.

“It’s a Wonderful Life” by Heath McNease with Pigeon John, Red Cloud, and Sintax the Terrific from Thrift Store Jesus

Nothing to do with Jimmy Stewart – as far as I can tell, but some first rate, not so ordinary hip-hop from Georgia.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – A Few of My Favorite Things 2013 Mix Part Four

And on we go…

Just in case you  joined us late, we are looking back on some of our favorite music from 2013, and doing it as only Ear to the Ground would…  I created a Playlist with favorites released in 2013.  2013 was a great year for music.  Many of your favorite E2TG artists released new music this year, some new favorites were “discovered”, and there was even some notable releases from artists you frequently read about on those “Brand X” music blogs.  All of those and maybe even more are included in the Playlist.  We’ve been shuffling through that playlist all week, and we will continue until the end of the year (and maybe a day or two more).

Let’s get to it, and see what Mr. Shuffle has brought up today… shall we?

“Open the Door” (Magnapop cover) by Tim Lee 3

“Play With Your Toys Pt. II” by The End Men

“Ankle Biters” by The Great American Novel

“Save Me a Seat” by Killing Kuddles

“Rain On” by The Blind Owl Band

“Silver” by Lys Guillorn

“Stockholm” by Jason Isbell

“Dance the Tango” by Marla Mase

“KidGrownUp” by Christian Robins (feat. JD) (Prod. G Money)

“Ain’t No Grave” by Black Jake and the Carnies

“Just Two Old Friends” by EdTang

“Rhythm Doctor” by Mark Robinson (from Have Axe – Will Groove)

“Any Day Now” by Tim Lee 3 (from Devil’s Rope)

“Loose Kites in Harbor” by Skeletons in the Piano (from Please Don’t Die)

“Crow Till We Croak” by EdTang (from Goodbye, Zen5, Sushi Dinner)

“Maliced Hearts” by Mr. Kind (from Mr. Kind)

Some notes:

I claim 2013 as a victory because I got to know Tim and Susan of Tim Lee 3. Whether you are interested in Bassett Hound Rescue, BBQ, or just some awesome tunes, they are your source. When I heard their 2013 album Devil’s Rope, I honestly didn’t know much about them – other than that they were from Knoxville, Tennessee and participated in CXCW. Devil’s Rope seemed like this near perfect distillation of  all the music I love tied up in a unique and original sound. Turns out, the heart of the band has direct links to many of the people who I grew up listening to in my smaller market eastern middle Tennessee youth.  I had the great chance to meet them in October and see them play an all-to rare Nashville show.

The album Play With Your Toys  by The End Men of Brooklyn contains two instrumentals which true to the titles demonstrates the great things that can happen when talented people play.

His name is Elwood and he performs under the moniker Killing Kuddles. If that alone doesn’t get your attention, then give a listen to his music. “”He brings a grungy, punk spirit to a folk troubadours’ heart (or maybe it’s the other way around).”  Some genius music blogger said that.  He released Odd Man Out this year, and it was one of my favorites of 2013 – which is why it’s represented here. Duh!

The Blind Owl Band play contemporary music on traditional instruments, and the result is well… nothing short of greatness. In my dream E2TG Festival, these guys will play back to back to back sets with The Imperial Rooster and Black Jake and the Carnies.

Lys Guillorn came to our attention via The Grimm Generation for which she often plays.  This year, she released her first solo album in a decade.  The wait was worth it. Winged Victory is flawless music that twangs and twists in all the right places. It’s pretty much unlike anything we’ve heard, and I hope more and more people will check it out.

Ex-Drive-by-Truckers (which is now more of a trivia item than a necessary introduction) Jason Isbell just keeps making great albums that push the American/Folk/Alt-Country/Country labels forward. He doesn’t need any help from me, but hey, I love listening to his music, and in case you haven’t heard him….

I’m not sure what most people will think when a 40 something white guy from Tennessee tells them to listen to a 20 year old Hip-Hop/Rapper/Poet from the Midwest that he heard about from another 40 something white guy who grew up in the same Tennessee town.  I just hope they listen. By the way, neither of us are anywhere close to typical 40 something white guys from Tennessee. Also, Christian Robins is not any close to a typical Mid-West Hip-Hop artist.  He dropped his debut KidGrownUp this year.

EdTang is from Asbury Park, New Jersey. He dropped one of the most interestingly titled albums of the year, Goodbye, Zen 5, Sushi Dinner.  I don’t know what that means, but the album is filled with some of the best folk/Americanaish rock, I’ve heard. The songs are amazing.

So, can I confess something, I don’t really know much about the Blues. I’ve listened to a lot of the greats of the early to mid 20th Century, and several bands we regularly feature have a strong foundation in the Blues. I’ve heard a lot of Blues music that really didn’t do anything for me.  So, when I was asked to give a listen to Mark Robinson‘s new album, I was worried that it would be really good Blues music, but that I just wouldn’t get it. Boy, talk about unfounded fears.  I’ll leave it to the true Blues aficionados to explain why they love Mark Robinson (and judging my many, many awards and accolades they do love him), and I will just speak from the heart as a music fan. Oh my God this is incredible stuff. I mean, I could listen to him play guitar for hours, and being a non-musician that is saying something. Robinson is a prominent Nashville musician, and he recruits some amazing players for his second solo album. The only thing I’m left wondering is how did I miss out on this guy until 2013?

Besides their team-up cover EP, Mr. Kind also dropped an EP of original songs in 2013 which are notable for pushing the band’s sound forward and for the heretofore (at least from my perspective) clean-up Brian Bergeron singing about heavy drinking and even dropping an f-bomb as he does on the EP opening song which we feature today.  Well played, Mr. Bergeron, well played.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Strings Mix

Time marches on…. we have a ton of cool tunes and not as much time as I would like…

First off – here is an updated version of yesterday’s “Retreat” Mix video playlist – we received a link for the New Victorians to the video for “Letting Go” so we substituted that for the song we originally included:

Jump to the Shuffle!

Today’s Shuffle:

“Whipping Post” by Blind Owl Band (their cover of the Allman Brothers song)

“The Rolling Baby Blanket of the Blues” by The Moon and You (a duo from Asheville, North Carolina. Nifty sound.)

“Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” by Stevie Nicks with Tom Petty (Yeah that song)

“Freedom’s a Stranger” by Scott Miller and Commonwealth (from the 2005 album Citation. Some fine, fine music is this…)

“Wasteland” by Moovalya (in some ways, Moovalya are the odd man out in today’s shuffle – which has a definite rootsy feel to it – but here at E2TG the odd man is in!)

“My Favorite Picture of You” by Guy Clark (what can I say? Guy Clark y’all.)

“Closed Hand, Full of Friends” by Foy Vance (from his newish album Joy of Nothing. Foy Vance is Irish and I feel like I’m late to the party on this guy, but I’m glad to be here)

“What’s the Matter Baby” by Mark Robinson (from Have Axe – Will Groove – when I listen to Mark Robinson’s take on the Blues – the answer to the song’s title is “Not much..just keep playing”)

“You’re Not There” by Tim Lee 3 (from Devil’s Rope. Always a treat when Tim Lee 3 end up on my shuffle)

“From this Valley” by The Civil Wars (from this year’s The Civil Wars. One can only hope the band will resolve their own civil wars and get back to making more music like this)

“Mi Burro Esta En Fuego” by Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray (“My Donkey is On Fire” two of my favorite trios are in the Shuffle today – Tim Lee 3 and Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray – yes they are a trio. They will be back in Nashville as part of the “New Faces” night at The Basement)

Here is the Video Playlist for Today

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Run Boy Mix

As I write this, I hear thunder behind me and the gentle, almost soothing sounds of car tires moving across wet city streets. It’s August 20, 2013, and I am alive, and though not perfect by any means, life is good.

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.jsSome days I want more out of life, but for me that is just a normal state of being. The key for me is to find peace in the now without thinking this is where I will and must always be.

As of this date, I have been writing Ear to the Ground for 2 years and about 3 months. The blog has not made me rich or very famous, but I consider it a huge success nonetheless. Because of the blog, I’ve been fortunate enough to meet some incredible and talented and just generally good people. I heard tons more music than I would have had I not written the blog. Every so often, I see one of my quotes in the promotional material of a band I’ve written about.

I’m not sure why I’m writing all this right now, but it seemed like as good a time as any to remind myself why I do this.

This morning brought an interesting mix of music.  Let’s get to it – after the jump…

Pre-Shuffle…

“Lift Up” by prattle on, rick (I’ve become a big prattle on, rick fan. This one comes from his Communion Bread record which features a building on the cover that I used to drive by almost every day)

“Stained Glass Window” by Courrier (from Cathedrals of Color – This band has had songs placed in several television series. They play huge, expansive music reminiscent of Coldplay and some U2. These other bands are listed for comparison purposes only.  I do think it is possible to not dig Coldplay or U2, and to love Courrier)

“Rusted Rain” by The Blind Owl Band  (This New York state band released their latest album within the past month or so. This Train I Ride is Made of Wood and Steel is chock full of great music.)

“The Ballad of Billy Polk” by The End Men (from Play with Your Toys… if you listen to just one The End Men song, listen to “The Ballad of Billy Polk” and then listen to all their other songs because they are awesome.

Shuffle…

“Good Country Girl” By Alexander Hudjohn Feat Katherine Hudjohn from Good Country Girl (single – 2013)

Just a flat out cool song. Couldn’t find a video for this song, so we added a CXCW video from 2012.

“Soldier Boy Johnny” by The Imperial Rooster from Cluckaphony (2013)

Yet another song from the fabulous song from the incredible 2013 release from Espanola’s own The Imperial Rooster.

“Moon Gate” by Peace of the South

We’ve played some Peace of the South before. This band has decided to release their music in bits and pieces as they work on it and as it develops. So this song isn’t so much a song as an extended riff, but I’m digging it.

“Gone, Gone, Gone” by Carl Perkins

We close out the shuffle with Rockabilly legend Carl Perkins.
