Monday Morning Music Shuffle – A Mixture of Mixtures Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js <!– google_ad_client = "ca-pub-5465441380757075"; /* E2TG #2 */ google_ad_slot = "6306625404"; google_ad_width = 728; google_ad_height = 90; //

Let’s jump to the shuffle –

 Monday’s are a beast….

Shuffle after the jump….

1. Song: His Arm Has Grown Long  Artist: Alexander Tucker  Album: Dorwytch (2011)

Alexander Tucker is from Kent, England.  This is sometimes beautiful, challenging, darkly complex music that seems to emanate from some ancient place and channel through the mindset of modern experimental post everything music.

2. Song: Turn Away  Artist: Forgetters  Album: Forgetters (2012)

Brooklyn Alt-Rock – featuring former members of Jawbreaker and Jets To Brazil, Againt Me! and Bitchin’.  Nabbed this song from the latest Feel Bad for You compilation.

3. Song: Here, In Heaven  Artist: Elite Gymnastics Album: Ruin 1 (2011)
Vancouver-based electronicky pop music stuff…

 4. Song: Dance With You  Artist: Willie Ames Album: Night Owl (2011)

Not the guy from Eight is Enough and Charles in Charge (do go there!) ( Btw, that Willie has two As in Aames), but a talented singer-songwriter-musician from California.  Night Owl is a beautiful record and Dance With You is a beautiful song.
video for the title track

 5. Song: Where am I Growing Up To?  Artist: Diana Lawrence Album: To: Aging Children (2012)

A featured Artist from last summer. An incredibly talented songwriter/vocalist. I met Diana Lawrence at the Americana fest, and I’m glad I did.  Here she is singing with Phoebe Hunt, who I also met at Americana.

6. Song: David Foster Wallace (acoustic) Artist: The Ugly Club  Album: Songs from a 10th Street Apartment (2012)

Another E2TG featured artist from last year. The song, which first appeared on the band’s You Belong to the Minutes album – as did all of the songs on the acoustic Songs from a 10th Street Apartment record, is about the legendary novelist.  I first came upon The Ugly Club and this song shortly after I finished reading Wallace’s 1989 short story collection, Girl with the Curious Hair. A different The Ugly Club song.

 7. Song: Jefferson Combine  Artist: Slow Mover Album: Slow Mover (2012)

Some hard, stoner rock from the Boston area.  Nabbed with from the epic, Bong Hits From the Astral Basement collection.

8.  Song: Define a Transparent Dream Artist: The Olvia Tremor Control Album: Music From the Unrealized Film Script, Dusk at Cubist Castle (1996)

Awesomeness from the debut of one of the original Elephant 6 bands

9.  Song: Channels and Winds Composer: Phillip Glass Album: Passages (1990)
Originally part of a collaboration between Glass and the late Ravi Shankar. The version we heard today came from a Phillip Glass sampler called The Orange Mountain

10.  Song: Evidence  Artist: The Soft Moon and John Foxx Album: ????
Okay, John Foxx was the original singer of Ultravox (before Midge Ure) and The Soft Moon are a San Francisco neo-post punk band.  The song Evidence was recently released by Foxx and his latest band The Maths.  Other than that, I don’t know much about this version of the song (including how it made it’s way into my collection), but it is good stuff.

11.  Song: Cupid  Artist: Sam Cooke Single (1961)
We close things up today with the inimitable Sam Cooke and the classic Cupid.

Greetings from chilly, overcast Nashville, home of the hit television series and a bunch of other things, too.   Well, this could very well be the final Music Shuffle from my current cellular telephone.  A new phone is scheduled to arrive today, and if all goes as planned, we will begin a new era of superior music shuffling here at Ear2theGround.

Meanwhile, as you know (you do know, don’t you?) we load up the memory card with fresh tracks on Monday nights. We had some fun selecting songs this week and some of the fruits of our fun make an appearance in this morning’s shuffle. Shall we?

While, we don’t highlight it as we once did, here at Ear2theGround, we dig a cool cover version.  We have a good one for you today to lead off our Morning Shuffle:  How about legendary Phoenix band, Meat Puppets with a song from a 1981 compilation album covering a song from Neil Young’s second studio album (and his first with Crazy Horse).  Herewith, please find enclosed for your enjoyment, Meat Puppets doing their version of The Losing End from the album Keats Rides a Harley, which is a cover of  the Neil Young and Crazy Horse song which appeared first in 1969 on the album Everybody Knows This is Nowhere.

How about Elvis doing The Losing End

I know absolutlely nothing about our next band. But, we do have another cover.  This one is a cover of the Rolling Stone’s classic Paint It, Black  and is performed by a band called The Insurgency from a Stone’s tribute album called Exiled Again.  I found a band called The Insurgency on Facebook, but I do not believe it is the same band.  This band apparently has done several tribute albums on Cherry Red Records.  In any event, here is the album:

Here is the real deal since I couldn’t find a video of the cover…

California punk band, White Flag are up next with their contribution to the 1987 compilation Rat Music for Rat People Vol. III called Kitchen Diaster.

Here is another White Flag song from the same era.

And, we close things out with a change in direction of sorts with one of the bands currently in the running for Band of the Month – The Ugly Club with an acoustic version of  their song Last Evenings from their recent, Songs from a 10th Street Apartment.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – An Ordinary Guy Mix

Another example of life handing you pickles and being able to make burgers or something… any way, since we last spoke life has happened and as a result there was no Morning Shuffle yesterday. Last night, we created a quick and awesome Smart Playlist from the good folks at Apple.  Say what you will, they know how to develop a damn fine Smart Playlist….  unfortunately, I ran out of time to post about the list and now it’s time for a new shuffle but I wanted to share the first two songs from that Smart Playlist:

Our good friends, The End Men with Build it Up, the song that started it all for us.  2013 is looking to be the year of The End Men – a new album due in or around February 2013 and more to come.

One of several of my favorite Bowie songs, Suffragette City from The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.

Now to today’s shuffle:
Featured Artists – The Ugly Club released an EP in 2011 called Visions of Tall Girl. The song Visions Part I begins today’s shuffle.

Here’s a video for Visions Part II

You can never ever have too much Chuck Berry – so today we have one of his best known songs, Rock and Roll Music. It was originally on his second album, One Dozen Berrys.

Here’s Chuck Berry with the formidable Etta James

Chance McCoy is currently a member of Old Crow Medicine Show.  Today we have his solo record with The Appalachian String Band – Dance All Night (with a Bottle in Your Hand) is from the album Debut. Which is yours for an e-mail (and an optional “tip”) from the good folks over at Noisetrade.

Dark bluesy Rockers and current Featured Artists, The Chaw close out our set of music today with a ballsy instrumental called In the Valley from their recently released self-titled debut album.
Here is the Kickstarter Video for the album

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Semisweet Tears of Pure Apathy Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); <!– google_ad_client = "ca-pub-5465441380757075"; /* E2TG #2 */ google_ad_slot = "6306625404"; google_ad_width = 728; google_ad_height = 90; //
 Blah blah blah…. stuff… random blathering…

okay, with that out of the way, let’s get right to another packed music shuffle:

Carolina Story are not from North or South Carolina (at least as far as I can tell).  They are a married couple from North Dakota and Arkansas.  They met in Memphis and currently reside across the Cumberland River from where I am right now.    They have been touring with rising Memphis band Star and Micey.  Before the tour the two bands put out a Live sampler on Noisetrade.  That sampler includes a live version of the Carolina Story song, Gold.

Current Featured Artists, The Dirty Urchins join a talented and growing list of young bands who are carving and clawing and digging out their own path playing timeless, soulful and well-crafted music for the post-post modern era. Hand me the Crown is taken from the band’s Just in Time EP.

New York/New Jersey band The Ugly Club released a live acoustic album called Songs from a 10th Street Apartment.  The original versions of the songs can be found on the band’s full-length debut called You Belong to the Minutes.  Today, we have The Mountain.

And how the hell did I miss out on this.

For this month, I front loaded my playlist with our Featured Artists for the month (including songs we’ve had in shuffles before).  This to explain, the repeat appearance of Christopher Paul Stelling with Solar Flares from his Songs of Praise and Scorn album.  I’m not complaining.

Another Featured Artist jumps into the mix.  Paul Davidson with his song California Dreams which he released as a single.

Fidlar are a Los Angeles band.  The band released a single called, Cheap Beer back in September.  I don’t know much yet about the band or their music, but I like this song, and I want to hear more.

Hopes N Hats: Tears Through Laughter and Laughter Through Tears Hopes N Hats: Tears Through Laughter and Laughter Through Tears

We had a culture of our own; rules that we lived by, using humor to get us through the tough times. We learned to laugh at ourselves in the face of terror, evil, danger, and to laugh at our misgivings. This book offers something for a broad range of people. Looking back over the sixties and seventies, I have to allow the truth to enter in on occasion. We lived in a simpler time, but still underwent massive changes in our culture. The eighties and nineties, we raised our children, using the faith and values bestowed upon us, by our parents, with a few modifications. Our children are now on their own; given all that we had to give, not monetarily, but from the head and heart to raise their children. Sharing tears is as important as sharing the good times. Our community coming together helped us through it all. We are never too young, too old, too crippled to make a difference in someone elses life.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Grainy Black and White Mix

Here we go…   More rain last night, and a drizzly morning, but I managed to stay dry on the walk up the hill.  July 10th.

Well, got tons of music added last night, and I’m ready to bring you a brand new shuffle:

I just go ahead and give a hat tip to David from Popatunes. I know most of today’s shuffle came directly or indirectly from him.

First up is Kohrn Sirup Sundae by a band called The Imperial Rooster from their 2011 album Decent People. The Imperial Rooster (Espanola, NM) play a particular brand of whacked out rooks music that I just love. You have to check them out.

Next up, we have Brooklyn band, Bear Hands with a song called Part I: What I Learned from a new EP called Songs from Utopia Volume 1.  The new EP can be had via the band’s website.

Here is a link to last year’s EP High Society
Next, we revisit the self-titled album from Atlanta-based Alt-Country outfit, National Grain.  Today, we have a classic country sounding number called City Lights.

And here’s National Grain off-shoot The Flint Hill Specials with a Superchunk cover.

And Finally, we have New Jersey band, The Ugly Club with the first song from their forthcoming album You Belong to the Minutes.  The song is called David Foster Wallace, David Foster Wallace is the late mad genius author of Infinite Jest and the short story collection The Girl With the Curious Hair.

Here is the band’s previous EP Visions of Tall Girl
