Ug… is it Monday already?  Okay… I have to be quick as I have some errands to run.

I hope everyone had a good Easter Sunday no matter what or how you celebrate or not…

Monday, as our new custom demands, is dedicated to artists who have some connection to Nashville, TN (aka Music City USA).

“Hold On” by SHEL (featuring Gareth Dunlop)

A song from the motion picture soundtrack for The Best of Me featuring the band of sisters, SHEL, who divide their time between Nashville and their hometown in Colorado. On this track, they are joined by singer-songwriter Gareth Dunlop from Northern Ireland.

“Bird on a Wire” by Brian Wright and the Waco Tragedies

From the album, Dog Ears.  I am really glad to have gotten hold of a bunch of Brian Wright music – I always dig it when one of his songs come up in the shuffle.  This is not a Leonard Cohen cover (in case you were wondering).

“High Roller” by Sugar and the Hi Lows

The title track and single from the 2015 album by this Nashville duo.

“Hey Algernon” by Chris Gantry

Chris Gantry has been a key figure in Nashville songwriting circles for more than four decades. I was fortunate enough to see him recently as part of an incredible round at Douglas Corner.  He sang this song that night – a touching story of two homeless gentlemen who freeze to death and find themselves in heaven. Gantry is a long time advocate for individuals who are homeless.

“The Last Song” by Crazy Aces

A sweet, instrumental from one of Nashville’s premier instrumental rock bands.

“Keep on Goin'” by Tim Carroll

A standard of Tim Carroll’s Friday night Rock and Roll Happy Hour set. Don’t ever stop… from a sampler CD that you can get when you see Tim live.

“When You Hear of My (Home Going)” by Luella

I believe this is a traditional African American spiritual (or else I could not find the composer).  This was one of the first songs I heard Luella sing when she first started singing with Tim Carroll at Fran’s in late 2014/early 2015.  Luella, as she does on all of the songs she covers, makes this all her own.  From a sampler you can get from Luella at one of her performances.  Come to The 5 Spot any given Friday and see Luella to get your copy of her sampler and Tim’s sampler.

“Play a Train Song” by Todd Snider

The late Skip Litz was a notable character around East Nashville who would always direct the band to “play a train song”.  This iconic song comes from Sniders classic album, East Nashville Skyline, an album that is at least partially responsible for a large number of songwriters moving to this cultural center.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Slow Bar Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js <!– google_ad_client = "ca-pub-5465441380757075"; /* E2TG #2 */ google_ad_slot = "6306625404"; google_ad_width = 728; google_ad_height = 90; //

Added tons of music to the lineup – so stayed tuned.

Let’s get to the Shuffle – after the jump:

1.  Thule Fog by John Vanderslice from Green Grow the Rushes (2010)

From a 2010 EP released for free by the Florida-born singer/songwriter. (A different Vanderslice song is on the Amazon Widget above)

2.  Crows by Shelly Colvin from Up the Hickory Down the Pine (2012)
Another great song from a former featured artist on E2TG.  We were fortunate to be able to attend the album release party for this record.
Here’s Colvin with other at Music City Roots

 3.  Dialtone by BELL from DIAMONITE (2011)

Brooklyn based Olga Bell heads up this electro-pop band.  An extended single with a few remixes of this song was released in June 2012.

4.  The System by The Black Pacific from 2010 SideOneDummy Summer Sampler (2010)
From the California punk band’s self-titled debut album…

5.   Paint a Vulgar Picture (Demo) by The Smith from Unreleased Demos and Instrumentals (Bootleg Vinyl Rip) (2010)
Final version of song appeared on The Smith’s final album, Strangeways, Here We Come.
6.  East Nashville Skyline by Todd Snider from What the Folk (2005)
Not on his 2004 album of the same name.  Does appear on his 2007 Rarities compilation called Peace, Love and Anarchy.  Name drops some East Nashville haunts from days gone by – also Phoenix Radio.
7.  Ain’t Dumbo by Night Beats from Trouble in Mind’s Stax-O-Trax! (2012)
Originally released on the band’s 2011 eponymous release. Seattle based Garage, Psychedelic, Soul band.

8.  The Way It Never Was by Kim Richey from Glimmer (1999)
A recent Goodwill score.  Kim Richey is an amazingly talented singer-songwriter. Her last album was called Wreck Your Wheels and was released in 2010.  Word is we may see some new music in 2013, and I, for one, cannot wait.  This song is about guaranteed to get into her head and stay… you won’t complain.

9. Younger Us by Japandroids from Cruel Summer: Stereogum Summer Jams 2010 Vol. 1 (2010)

Originally released as a single in July 2010 b/w a cover of X’s Sex and Dying in High Society.  Later released on the band’s 2012 album Celebration Rock. This duo from Vancouver does the modern alternative rock thing pretty darn well.

  10. Heavy Soup (Outro) by Cornershop from Handcream for a Generation (2002)

Groove heavy instrumental from this English band’s fourth album.  This record has become one my favorites.

11. Saturday’s Child by Steve Almaas from Trailer Songs (2012)
ex-Suicide Commando and Beat Rodeo front man released this fresh sounding album last year. Fans of Beat Rodeo will recognize the bright pop vocals and the mildly countryish twang of the music.  I know I’ve had this song in my shuffle before, and hopefully more of the record will show up soon, but I don’t mind hearing it again.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Robocop on Unicorn Mix

The picture above is Robocop riding a unicorn.  This is the ultimate in coolness. Robodrum is a band that is neck and neck with our friends Those Mockingbirds in the Red Bull Soundstage contest. Robodrum is not cool. If TMB were going against Robocop riding a Unicorn, I would be torn… naw, I would vote for Robocop – sorry Adam… Fortunately, Those Mockingbirds are up against Robodrum, so it is a no brainer.  Just hit the link, you can sign up with Facebook and vote for Those Mockingbirds today and tomorrow. If they win this contest, the band will have a song in a movie and win an appearance on the Letterman show where they will give a shout-out to Ear to the Ground…;-) jk…maybe…no really…

Anyway, now that you’ve voted and told all your friends to vote for Those Mockingbirds, it is time to get to today’s shuffle:

Wolf & Cub are a band from Adelaide, Australia. They play a funky brand of psychedelic alt-rock. Got Nothing Coming is part of a new Double A-side single which the band is currently offering for a free download over at Bandcamp.  Check it out and then check out their back catalog.

Next up, is a song about the sometimes artsy, sometimes gritty part of town across the Cumberland River. East Nashville Skyline is not on the album of the same name by Todd Snider, but it does appear on a Rarities disk and on the live double CD we have today which is called Todd Snider Live – The Storyteller. It’s a nifty ditty which name-drops late lamented icons like The Slow Bar and Radio Cafe as well as The Phoenix a cool radio station from back in the day.

Next up – Zero Dark Thirty is a recent track by the always amazing Aesop Rock.  It is the first track off the forthcoming Skelethon album.

And finally, as the shuffle fates would have it, we have our good friends Taco Land  again with another track off their fine, fine Heart of Texas album.  This one is called Gimmie The Sky

Here is another Taco Land video….
