Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Top Sider Clad Mix

Thank goodness for second wind…  I think I may survive this week after all.  On another note, the temperature is about 20 degrees cooler than yesterday at this time – welcome to winter in Nashville. I attended my first show at 3rd and Lindsley as a correspondent for No Depression/ND Roots.  My review should be up soon, I will post links on my Facebook page – so follow me there.

“Coyotes” by Modest Mouse

How about some brand new Modest Mouse music. “Coyotes” is the second single from the forthcoming Strangers to Ourselves album. It based upon a true story of a coyote that rode the MAX lite rail line in Portland in 2002.

“The Intense Humming of Evil” by Manic Street Preachers

The Holy Bible turned 20 years old in 2014.  No not the book… the now classic album by Welsh band Manic Street Preachers.  It was the last album released before the 1995 disappearance of rhythm guitarist and chief lyrist Richie Edwards (Edwards was officially declared dead in 2008).  Stark and disturbing, the album is a startlingly real view into the mind of Edwards who was suffering from a depression, self harm, and anorexia nervosa.

“Kara Dean” by Ike Reilly

The first time I saw the title of this song, I thought it was about Nashville’s current mayor (whose name is just one letter different).  It is not.  The song is from Ike Reilly’s Junkie Faithful album. It is part of the 18 song retrospective Am I Still the One for You” which you can still get for free (donation encouraged) from Noisetrade.

“Harvest Moon” by Jason and the Scorchers

From their classic Fervor EP… the accompanying video was shot at a 1985 show in the Cat’s Records parking lot on West End Avenue in Nashville that this blogger attended – almost 30 years ago????

San Fermin are an Indie Rock band from Brooklyn. Their second album, Jackrabbits is coming out this spring, and they are playing the Forecastle Festival up in Kentucky. This single was released back in December. It’s a good one.

“That Was Your Mother” by Paul Simon

I have always had a tender spot in my heart for this song. Maybe it is the Cajun feel that speaks to my Cajun ancestry, maybe it is the fact that my parents lived in Lafayette, Louisiana a long time ago, yeah, before I was born, dude…, or maybe it is just because it is a great song. From the classic Graceland.

“Happy Chemicals” by Batkhi Dahn

We all could use some more Happy Chemicals… Seriously, there is something pretty weird, wild, and awesome happening here… check out Batkhi Dahn!

“Prologue” by Ben Arthur

Who says we can’t have a brief instrumental Prologue in the middle of the last half of a shuffle!  Who says we can’t take the opportunity of posting this brief instrumental prologue to tell you that you seriously need to check out Ben Arthur’s Album/Novel If You Look for My Heart?  Do it! Who says? I say!

“Meredith” by Sean Watkins

Another instrumental, less brief and not a prologue. Also, the second Sean Watkins song in the shuffle.  In the video playlist in place of this song which I could not find, I posted a video of Sean and his sister Sara Watkins. 

“Broken Whiskey Glass” by Jason and the Scorchers

I have to my list of favorite musical moments involve standing amongst an energetic and enthusiastic crowd singing loudly to the introduction to this song all the while anticipating the moment when the song explodes into an incredible ball of pure rock and roll heaven.

In a moment of my shuffle having a good timing, we have a song from The Lone Bellow album that was released yesterday.  I dig this band a great deal, and I am looking forward to digging more into the whole Then Came the Morning album.  Trivia:  On Monday, the band appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman and among the musicians joining them was Melissa Tong who is the fiddler for Pork Chop Willie who we featured last year.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Honey Honey Mix

I am honestly at loss for what to write about in this introduction.  I am scheduled to see a bunch a good music including taking in my first 3rd and Lindsley show for No Depression. At the rate things are going, I may not even make it to East Nashville until Friday – which is highly unusual.

Today’s shuffle is a pretty balanced mix of current (or at least recent) music along with some of my all-time favorites….  Let us see what is in store….

“Honey Honey” by Hugh Mitchell

This is the second track we’ve featured by Hugh Mitchell who is currently hanging around Nashville.  I had the great pleasure of talking to him some this weekend and here’s hoping for some new music from him soon.  I absolutely love this song.  It is so well-crafted and man that hook!

“Monsters of the World Unite!” by Homer and Jethro

Country Music Hall of Fame duo Homer and Jethro sing about all of the misunderstood monsters of the the movies…. with the chorus of “Gory, Gory Alleleuia” Perfectly awesome!

“Shut In” by Strand of Oaks

Timothy Showalter aka Strand of Oaks with a track from his latest album HEAL.

“And a Bang on the Ear” by The Waterboys

This song does not advocate violence.  A “bang on the ear” is similar to a “peck on the cheek”. An exuberant song about falling in love. 

“Got My Mind Set On You” by George Harrison

From the last George Harrison solo album released in his lifetime (Cloud Nine).  This was considered a comeback of sorts or at least a triumphant return.  And this song…

“The First to Know” by Joe Nolan

Joe Nolan was the featured artist at this past Sunday’s East Side Invasion, and it was so good to hear him play several of his great songs.  This song is from the remastered version of his album Blue Turns Black which is scheduled for release soon. 

“Bad Self Portraits” by Lake Street Dive

This is the title track from the latest album by Boston’s Lake Street Dive.  I really like this song.

“Slow Burn” by Telepathic Teddy Bear

I am always glad to hear new music from Telepathic Teddy Bear – who besides having the best name ever also makes great electronic pop music. This is from his new album Forgiveness.

“This Land is Your Land” by The Waterboys

Another one from Fisherman’s Blues.  This is a modified version of the Woody Guthrie folk standard that was a response to “God Bless America”.

“Another Moon” by Meat Puppets

We close things out with another song from the amazing Forbidden Places album.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – I’m Not Down Mix

Every other Sunday Night, an amazing cultural exchange program takes place in Nashville.  The East Side Invasion at Bobby’s Idle Hour features some of East Nashville’s best songwriters holding court at the legendary Music Row watering hole.  Curated and hosted by performing songwriter Lindsay Ellyn, the typical evening includes two songwriter rounds, a set from a featured artist, and a show closer by Darrin Bradbury. The night is a casual, laid-back affair that happens to include some of the best songwriters Nashville (East or West) has to offer. Plus, I’m usually home before eleven to get ready to face Monday morning.  Come on out sometime. The next East Side Invasion is February 8.

In the shuffle today, we have some great songs by some of my heroes, another awesome track from a new Alt-Rock band that we have been featuring, plus something completely different… let’s dig in!

“It’ll Never Get Better Than This” by Bill Lloyd

We start off the week in shuffles with another great Pop song from Bill Lloyd’s Feeling the Elephant album.  Lloyd, who may be best known as 1/2 of the hit Country duo Foster and Lloyd, also happens to be one of the best Pop songwriters in America.  To paraphrase Joe Jackson, When I die and go to pure pop heaven, I have a feeling I’ll hear a Bill Lloyd song playing on the PA.

“That’s How it Goes” by Meat Puppets

One of the Meat Puppets most straight forward Country sounding songs. It’s still a definite Meat Puppets’ song. From Forbidden Places.

“Amazons” by Phranc

Another from Folksinger. Amazons is Phranc’s homage to great female sports figures.

 

“Human Touch” by Elvis Costello

From Get Happy!!  Elvis Costello and the Attractions 1980 album which was highly influenced by Ska, Soul, and Rhythm and Blues music.   

“Endless Farewell” by Soul Asylum

From Hang Time (1988) which was produced by Ed Stasium and Lenny Kaye. Endless Farewell is a slow burner in the midst of some of the most poppy punk rock songs on the album.

“Blind Among the Flowers” by The Tourists

The Tourist was a 1970s British band that featured (among others) Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart before they were Eurhythmics. The band wrote and recorded some incredibly catchy songs in the course of their 3 year existence. Appropriately enough, their 1984 retrospective was called Should Have Been Greatest Hits.  Blind Among the Flowers from the band’s self-titled debut album is one of my favorites.

“Out of Control (Into the Void)” by The Torn Images

I think this is the fourth The Torn Images song we have featured in one of our shuffles. From the Reviver album, the song is the kind of grungy rock songs, that you just don’t hear very often anymore. 

“Stellazine Blues” by The Georgia Satellites

From In the Land of Salvation and Sin comes some classic late 80s Southern rock and roll.

“Fracking” by Tanya Tagaq

From the album Animalism.  This is music unlike anything you have heard before.  Intensely primal Inuit Throat singing is joined with eerily droning electronica. I do not think this is for everyone, but I encourage everyone to listen with an open mind and recognize the artistry of what is happening even if the results are not to your taste.

                                                                          
“I’m Not Down” by The Clash

This is probably one of the songs on London Calling with which I am least familiar. It is a great song from one of the best albums of all time by one of the best bands of all time.

Friday Morning Music Shuffle –

I wanted to share some news with all of my Ear to the Ground readers.  I am going to begin covering live shows at awesome Nashville venue 3rd and Lindsley for No Depression. There are several bands who can be cited as innovators of the sound that would become Alt-Country.  The Silos certainly earned their place it that discussion. Bottom line, great songs are great songs. This is from the bands self-titled major label debut also known as “the one with the bird on the cover”.

“Take Your Shoes Off Pt. 2” by Booker T. Averhart and The Mustangs

A funky instrumental b-side from a 1963 single released on the Kent label.

“Blood Oranges in the Snow” by Over the Rhine

A gorgeous song – the title track from the band’s 2014 holiday album. Perfect for this latest cold front we are experiencing (although no snow yet in Nashville – at press time.)

“Possibly” by Ben Arthur

Seriously, if you haven’t checked out Ben Arthur’s latest project novel/album on Noisetrade.  Do it now! I will wait here.

“Homeless” by Paul Simon

My recent conversations with a friend about Paul Simon’s Graceland album prompted me to add it back into my rotation.

“World Party” by The Waterboys

Supposedly Karl Wallinger got the name of his band from this song (per Wikipedia – so who knows), in any case, I love The Waterboys, I love this song, and I love World Party the band, so it’s all good.  Come on, let’s party, world! From Fishermen’s Blues.

“Making Breakfast” by Twin Peaks

So supposedly the band got their name from the restaurant chain and not the David Lynch series which is returning!!!!!  Rumor has it the restaurant chain’s name is also not a reference to the David Lynch series.  Still a good excuse to say that Twin Peaks the David Lynch series is returning in 2016.  The band are from Chicago, and I really dig this song. From their album Wild Onion.

“Next Time” by Satellite Sky

Satellite Sky are an Australian brother/sister rock duo currently based in L.A. I can’t remember where I got this song, but it appears to be a recent single.  It is not on any of the albums I could find listed.  I like it.

“Take it Off” by Alex Chilton

How about Alex Chilton on a Friday morning…  Take it all off!

“In the City” by J.R. Wyatt

Another appearance by phenomenal Nashville songwriter J.R. Wyatt in the shuffle.  Such a great voice and such great songs. 

“Caucasian Cancer” by The Danbury Lie

The Danbury Lie are flat out one of my favorite bands.  This song is from their latest release called Scattered Moments of Connection. The song is highly original and sooo good.  Check them out on Facebook and at Bandcamp.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Another Magic Mart Mix

“Drinkin’ In My Sunday Best” by Maria McKee

From the very first time I heard Lone Justice, I knew Maria McKee was something special.  This song is off of her solo debut, and it was a fine burst of energy to start my morning.

“Little America” by R.E.M.

R.E.M.’s second full-length album Reckoning ends with their “road” song. “Jefferson, I think we’re lost…”

“More Than This” by Roxy Music

The emotional connections I have made to this song are numerous and deep.  This is the first track on the classic Avalon album.  For some reason, this song brings to mind a hungover/still buzzing sunrise at the end of a wild night.

“Love On Low-Fi” by J.R. Wyatt

Another track from J.R. Wyatt’s excellent solo record, Empty Room Sessions.  I dig the songwriting and the voice of this song Nashville songwriter.  Glad I got to see him on Tuesday at The 5 Spot playing with a full band.

“Natural Disaster” by Gretchen Peters

Speaking of fine Nashville songwriters.  Gretchen Peters is a living legend.  Another stand out track from her album Hello Cruel World.

“The Boogie Man” by The Cadillacs

I think this one has been creeping (pun partially intended) around the Playlist since Halloween, but really is it ever not the right time for the Boogie Man?

“Can’t Leave Well Enough Alone” by Matt Prater

This is an awesome track off the forthcoming Tables and Chairs by Alabama based songwriter/performer Matt Prater.  Recommended if you dig great songs and REAL Country music.

“Metropolis” by The Belle Brigade

The Belle Brigade are an LA Brother and Sister duo.  This is from their 2014 album Just Because.  This was on a friend’s annual mix CD, and I really dig their sound, and I definitely want to check out more.

“On and On” by Joey Bada$$ (feat. Maverick Sabre and Dyemond Lewis)

How about some Hip Hop sounds to take us out of this Thursday Shuffle.  Brooklyn-based Joey Bada$$ released his latest album B4.Da.$$ just about a week ago.  This song is on that album.  I am by no means an expert on Hip Hop music, but I also am not willing to dismiss it all without listening.  I didn’t really expect to, but I do like this a great deal.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Pants on Fire Mix

Last night, I hung out at this wonderful weekly East Nashville happening, Derek Hoke’s $2 Tuesday at The 5 Spot. It was a great time with some great music. Host Derek Hoke played an awesomely perfect Western Swingish version of Led Zeppelin’s Houses of the Holy, and the night ended with a great full-band set by J.R. Wyatt who I have featured on this blog.

If you are in Nashville on Thursday, you have your next non-Fran’s chance to see Ear to the Ground 2014 Artist of the Year Darrin Bradbury. The show is also at The 5 Spot beginning around 9:00.  Mention Ear to the Ground and you will get some odd looks, but what the heck, mention us anyway.
“Liar Liar” by Phranc

I don’t know what a small town Tennessee boy was doing listening to an ex-punk, Jewish Lesbian Folksinger, but I did, and I loved it. As an Amazon reviewer noted, some of the cultural references are a bit dated, but the music prevails and hell, we can all think of people to whom this song applies. “You Keep Me Hanging On” by Aretha Franklin

In 2014 the Queen of Soul released Sings the Great Diva Classics. This is the Holland Dozier Holland classic originally recorded by The Supremes. Aretha is still the Queen of Soul.

“Evona Darling” by Linda and Teddy Thompson

Evona Darling is a beautiful song written by Lal and Mike Waterson. Linda Thompson included this song on her 2002 album Fashionably Late. This version with her son Teddy was included on Shining Light: The Songs of Lal and Mike Waterson which was also released in 2002. This is an amazing cover by two incredible performers.

The Allman Brothers Band recently ended their long run, and a 6 disc box set of recordings from their legendary 1971 At Fillmore East shows was released in 2014.  This is the shortest version of this Dickey Betts’ song included in set (just over 12 minutes).  And, although, I cannot claim to be a huge or long time Allman Brothers Band fan, I can say that there are some amazing things happening here musically.  And I am moved to dig deeper.

“We Ain’t Gonna Die Today” by Atmosphere

From their latest album Southsiders, Minneapolis hip-hop duo Atmosphere… I dig it.

“This Must Be the Place” by Bill Lloyd

Feeling the Elephant is one of my favorite albums of the Nashville 80s Rock era, and it remains a true Pop masterpiece.

“Whirlpool” by Meat Puppets

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Leather and Chrome Mix

Back at it after a long weekend…. some days, you just don’t feel it, but you press on and music always helps.

“Little World” by Gretchen Peters

A beautiful song from Peters’ 2012 album Hello Cruel World.  Her next album is due in February and is called Blackbirds.

“Don’t Say You Love Me” by Sean Watkins

From the latest solo record by a founding member of Nickel Creek. The album is called All I Do Is Lie, and it was recently made available on Noisetrade. I dig the well written songs played by top-notch musicians.

“Fisherman’s Blues” by The Waterboys

The lead and title track from one of my favorite albums.  At the time, Fisherman’s Blues was a radical departure from The Waterboys’ signature “Big Music” sound, and although I am huge fan of the early Waterboys’ records, I have always had a soft spot for Celtic Music and this is an album I find myself returning to again and again.

“Big Blue Sun” by Amelia White

Another great track from the Old Postcards album. This is always one of my favorites to hear Amelia perform live.

“Holy Moses” by Echo and The Bunnymen

I’ll be honest, I haven’t really kept up with Echo and the Bunnymen in recent years.  This track is off their latest album Meteorites which came out last year. A friend included on his annual mix CD.  I didn’t immediately recognize this has a Echo and the Bunnymen song, but taken out of context (for me), I have to say I like this song.

“1952 Vincent Black Lightning” by Richard Thompson

What exactly can I say. As I’ve stated before, Rumor and Sigh is a favorite of mine, and this song has gone on to become a modern folk music standard that will likely live on for years. I just don’t seem to get tired of hearing this song.

“Stones” by Dead and Lovely

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Talking inYour Sleep Mix

I had a technical glitch which prevented me from going back to review the songs in this morning’s shuffle, so I did the best I could from memory.  I realize that no one would know the difference, but I felt the need to be honest about that.  I think I came pretty close (possible some songs out of order)…

Our second song of the week that was featured on the show Sons of Anarchy.  I was fortunate enough to catch John Moreland on the opening night of his Campfire songs tour with Caleb Caudle and Aaron Lee Tasjan.  If you have the chance to see this three incredible songwriters together, make it happen! It is on the album Earthbound Blues.

This is one of the most amazing pieces of music I have heard in a long time. Voice and Cello with the energy of good punk music and the virtuosity of classical music. And even that doesn’t do this powerful piece of music justice.  Give it a listen and download and support this Toronto duo.
