Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Passion Fruit and Holy Bread Mix

If you’ve been reading Ear to the Ground for any length of time and ever wondered about the subtitles for each shuffle (like Passion Fruit and Holy Bread Mix* today), I thought I would provide a little historical context.

When I started writing Ear to the Ground (May 2011), there was a local blog that posted a news round up post almost every day, and each one was titles something like News Roundup (probably not that but you get the idea) – something edition.  I thought it would be cool as a homage to that site** to add subtitles to my daily shuffle.  I actually used the word “edition” before I changed it to the more music oriented “mix”.

These often obscure or even meaningless subtitles are derived from a variety of sources: Current Events, events from my life, overheard phrases, and sometimes they even have something to do with the music contained in that days shuffle.

* As I wrote this, I realized the unintentional humor of Holy Bread Mix (which I suppose could be used in a Holy Bread Machine.

** Homage is just a fancy way of saying blatant ripoff, right?

Anyway, I have had fun this week using part of lyrics of some of the more well known songs in each day’s shuffle as the source of the subtitle.

Anyway, no extra charge for all that useful information.  Let’s shuffle….

“She Bangs the Drums” by The Stone Roses

“Dancing With Tears in My Eyes” (Huddie Ledbetter (Lead Belly) cover) by X

“The Sun in California” by The Autumn Defense

“Trece Leches” by The Plum Magnetic

“Misfit” by Britain.

“Crying in the Rain” by The Everly Brothers

“Final Wild Son” by The Long Ryders

“Cadillac Desert” by William Tyler

“We No Who U R” by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
NOTES

Nice combination of songs of different eras and styles.

What was and what could have been…. The Stone Roses….

To save you the time and trauma, the Ke$ha song is not a cover of either the Lead Belly original, the X cover or the unrelated Ultravox song.

To give my younger readers some perspective of how weird it is growing older: Wilco spinoff band The Autumn Defense have been together longer than X had at the time I first become familiar with their music.

In my initial contact about The Plum Magnetic, one of the “similar to” bands mentioned was Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, and it is really noticeable in today’s track. Good funky, jazzy grooves. The band is from my Dad’s hometown, by the way.

Britain. (yes the period is part of his name) is a young (I mean really young – not The Foresters young, but young) Indie Hip-Hop artist from the outskirts of Nashville.  As noted in the lyrics of song featured today, he doesn’t fit the profile of a hip hop artist, but he got the rhymes.  He is also a budding Reality TV star.  As a fellow misfit, I can appreciate this song.

The world lost an amazing voice earlier this month with the passing of Phil Everly.  Phil along with his brother Don produced some of the best and most enduring harmonies in modern era music. The Everly Brothers‘ influence is widespread and also enduring.

If I had been cooler and lived in California during the middle part of the 1980s, I think I would have been at least a stalker of the whole Paisley Underground scene.  As it was, I was just a huge fan of a lot of the music that came out of it.  The Long Ryders were among my favorites.  The band recently reunited for their first L.A. gig in something like 27 years (for a benefit concert that also featured a reunion of another favorite of mine from that time – The Unforgiven.)  Today’s track is the opening song on the band’s classic Native Sons album.

William Tyler is one of Nashville’s biggest musical assets, and I’m really glad the rest of the universe seems to be catching on to his music.  This is a great instrumental track of a Merge Records compilation from last year.

William Tyler from Grimey’s Record Store Day 2012 when he played with JEFF the Brotherhood and Caitlin Rose.

One can never go wrong by closing out a shuffle and a week with a Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds song.  This one is from his highly regarded 2013 album – Push the Sky Away.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Ziggy, Elvis, and Rex Mix

January 8th!  E2TG sends out a heartfelt Happy Birthday! to four individuals who helped shaped my musical tastes.  Elvis Presley and David Bowie need to introduction.  Rex Silo and Ron Ruelle were by my side through many of my musical adventures and shows in the late 80s to early 90s. They remain good friends and I hope they will both raise an Old Bru (mentally add umlauts) today.

On to the shuffle which does not include Elvis or Bowie, but in honor of Rex and Ron (and purely by happenstance) does include several artists I know he likes….)

I’ve been taking advantage of kids being out of school and thus having longer commute time to listen to music to present as much music as I can before I load up our Playlist with lots and lots of new stuff.  The only bad thing is not having as much time to write about all the great music.  My recommendation is to look up bands on Facebook or using this thing called Google….   Anyway, after today, I will have featured over 80 songs this week.  Not a bad way to start 2014.

“Preach” by American Dirt
“Find Her Way” by Swear and Shake
“Song for the Dumped” (Ben Folds Five cover) by Bird by Bird
“Empire State Express” by Son House
“Revolution Number Zero” by The Brian Jonestown Massacre
“The Politics of Time” by The Minutemen
“Piece of Work” by Will Kimbrough
“Can’t Slow Down” by Randy Rogers Band
“Talking Microwave Blues (Live 2011)” by Darrin Bradbury
“Giddy Boy Good”  by Babe
“I’ll Only Let You Down” by The Dregs
“Ain’t No Sunshine” (Bill Withers Cover) by Bird by Bird
“Tennessee Valley Girl” by The Bis-Quits
“Distant Light” by Dr. Dog
“Charon” by Shake Jack
“Jamie” by Darrin Bradbury
“Troublemaker” by Jim Lauderdale
“Middle of the Bed” by Lucy Rose
“The Hearse” by Wampire
“U.R.A. Fever” by The Kills
“Hong Kong” by Adam Hill
“If You Need Me Back in Brooklyn” by River City Extension
“Loretta” by Amos Lee
“A Switch Behind the Poster? (Let’s Push It!)” by Black Doctor Jr.
“Balls to the Wall” (Accept Cover) by Eyes of the Dead
“Monster” by Solardrive (featuring Rain Phoenix)
“Play That Cheap Trick, Cheap Trick Play” by Tommy Womack
“Eyes on the Islands” by Humming House
“How I (Learned my Lesson) by X
“Love the Sinner, Hate the Sin” by Elephant Stone
“Fly” by The Jam

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Cold Start Mix

Well here we are.  It’s a new year. 2014 is shaping up to be a good one with new music promised from The Foresters, Humming House, The Lucky Jukebox Brigade, and Taco Land just to name a few off the top of my head.

I haven’t finished adding new music to our playlist, but we have some sweet music – new and old already queued up so let’s jump to it.

“Drunken Hearts” by Wallpaper

“Tusk” (Fleetwood Mac Cover) by Kopecky Family Band

“Black Star” (Radiohead Cover) by Gillian Welch

“Lie Awake” by Angel Snow

“No Exchange” by Minutemen

“The Best I Can Do (Is Love You)” by Mr. Kind

“Desperate” by Solardrive (feat. David Gould)

“Your Majesty” by Slack Armada

“Wrecking Ball” by Swear and Shake

“Street Hassle: Waltzing Matilda” by Lou Reed

“F(e)ar O(f)f Place” (Home Demo) by Black Doctor Jr.

“On a Night Like This” by Bob Dylan

“Southern Seamstress” by Humming House

“Urethane” by Grounded

“Lady Stardust” by David Bowie

“The Hungry Wolf” by X

“Happy Good Morning Blues” by Bruce Cockburn

“Themselves” by Minutemen

NOTES:

Wallpaper are from Oakland.  I think we grabbed this from Amazon. Dig it.

A couple of really cool covers. Kopecky Family Band covering the Fleetwood Mac classic, and the incredible Gillian Welch covering Radiohead.

Angel Snow wrote “Lie Awake” with Viktor Krauss and it was included on Victor’s sister’s 2011 album Paper Airplane. Viktor’s sister is Allison Krauss.  Here’s Angel doing the song herself from her self-titled album.

The great thing about featuring Double Nickels on the Dime by The Minutemen is that it has so many songs, the featured posts carry on for a while.  The Minutemen are always a great way to start the day.

Another from Mr. Kind‘s self-titled release.

Solardrive is the new band/project from Balthazar Getty and this track features David Gould who is bassist in the band Mother Tongue.

We also have some cool music from Slack Armada out of Chicago, Swear and Shake out of Brookyln, Humming House from Nashville, and Grounded from Florida.

The Home Demo we feature from Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen artist Black Doctor, Jr. is pretty damn awesome.

Starting 2014 with a classic Lou Reed epic is a statement of the endless and timeless quality of his music.  This song brings together two of the artists who had a huge influence on my early musical taste and development (via a spoken word bit by Bruce Springsteen).

Great classic music from Bob Dylan, David Bowie, X, and Bruce Cockburn round out this excellent beginning to what is promising to be a great year.

By the way, her parents happen to be a couple of the coolest people I know. Watch the video, and I think you’ll get a glimpse of why I say that.

Here we go… it seems like I’ve been adding more songs every week then I have time to feature. So to help clear the backlog and to feature more songs – I’m going to add a Bonus Mix feature.  And, just like it’s better to eat dessert first, so it is better to present the Bonus Mix first…

It all gets going after the leap (jump):……

Bonus Mix:  (where possible I’ve added these tracks to the Video playlist and to the weekly store, however, I’m not including other details – so please google and check out these songs)

http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/album=472481512/size=medium/bgcol=ffffff/linkcol=0687f5/transparent=true/

“My Happy” by Lindsay Katt (from Picking Out Boxes. A singer/songwriter from NYC. My first listen. Check her out)

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Brilliant, Shining, and Nasty Mix

ridinghome by JWM – 7/28/2013

(My First Soundcloud sound… a spoken word bit from a novel-in-progress)

i can’t stand people who bitch and whine
lets drink a beer from a paper bag while we got time
bang bang let the music go bang!
brilliant shining & nasty
bang make the music go bang!
let me hear a guitar sound like a train
bang bang make the music go bang!
bang bang make the music go bang!
 X

 Today’s Mix after the JUMP

Pre-Shuffle:

“The Line Which Divides” by Liquid Casing (progressive, political, personal)

“Old Soul” by Sam Morrow (Some very good modern folk music from California)

“Move Together” by James Bay (British Soulful Stuff)

“Rain On” by The Blind Owl Band (new music on old-style instruments from NY)

“Daughters of Ursa Major” by Chris Schlarb (At almost the same time I discovered this music, they were playing a show here in Nashville – at the Stone Fox… bad timing, but good music. I hope they come back soon.)

“Supersoaker” by Kings of Leon (Nashville’s homegrown arena alt-rock stars are back with some eagerly anticipated new music)

And the next song takes us into the Shuffle:

“Make the Music Go Bang” by X from More Fun in the New World (1983)

As I was coming of age, musically speaking, my good friend, Rex Silo published a review of this album in our exceptional high school newspaper, The Charger. I fell in love with this record just based upon his review, and when I finally heard it, I was hooked totally. X are back on tour this summer and fall with B-52s for some dates and with Blondie for others.  You can hear the infant sounds of Americana, Alt-Country etc. being birthed this album as punk, rockabilly met some of the most amazing songwriting of this or any other era.  Still one of my all-time favorite albums.

“Someone Like You” (Adele Cover) by Valued Customer from “Fun Covers”

In anticipation of the release of Kalpa (widgeted above), I downloaded some older VC stuff, and I’m glad I did, because it looks like they have removed their older material from their Bandcamp Page.  So – as we’ve said and said again, check out Kalpa. The song today is from a nifty little covers album which features deconstructions of some (at the time of recording) current pop hits as well as a classic soul song.

“Careful, Body” by Great Forest from Me and My Friends EP (2013)

Great Forest are from Arkansas. They play a pretty nifty kind of Indie Rock.

“Highways Long” by The Blind Owl Band from This Train I Ride is Made of Wood and Steel (2013)

A nifty bluegrass-inspired “road song”. Set in the South by a band from New York state.

“Rough Carpenters” by Black Twig Pickers from Rough Carpenters (2013)

This band originates near the Virginia, West Virginia state line, and they make music inspired by the mountain

“Triggers and Trash Heaps” by Centro-matic from Fort Recovery (2006)

Another great song from Texas Band Centro-Matic.
