Trending Tuesday Morning Shuffle – Alright, Alright Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); Be sure to “Like” Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Good day, hepcats!  Had a blast seeing Matt Phillips and The Philharmonic out at Charlie Bob’s last night.  The band sounded fantastic and it was great hearing how much Matt’s sound has evolved since I saw him last year at Music City Roots (which was awesome, too by the way).  I hope he makes it back to Nashville for a more extended visit.

Lots on the horizon, trying to keep all those juggles balled… no wait, that is not it…

It’s Tuesday!  Time to find out what we have “Trending” on E2TG.

“Picture” by Jean Synodinos

First up, another track from Love and Blood the latest album from this Austin-based singer-songwriter.  I dig this album.

“Stop this World” by Golden State Lone Star Blues Revue

Next, we have our first listen to this new album by a band made up of great bluesmen from California and Texas – including Mark Hummel and Anson Funderburgh.  The band’s self-titled album is due out April 15. This is authentically, real blues music.  Dig it!

“It’s Gonna Be (alright)” by Ricky Mirage

I am pretty sure (but won’t swear by it) that I was turned onto this record by a Facebook post of Aaron Lee Tasjan.  Ricky Mirage is the alter-ego of Chicago musician Nick Harris.  The album Pop Goes the Sun is a trippy, poppy good time. The last couple of tracks have been hanging around the playlists for a while – it is great when they come up.

“C Vitae” by Leapfrogtown

Another awesome track from Dreaming in Public.  I am really digging this band from London – so is my shuffle function.

“The End of Mystery” by Jason P. Krug

I think I am just figuring out what the term “Spirit Animal” means in popular vernacular.  It’s like a “Patronus” from Harry Potter, right?  Well, anyway, I think Jason P. Krug is my spirit animal. Long-time E2TG readers will recall that I have been writing about Jason’s old band Grimm Generation for several years – including an interview which was when I first felt like Jason was someone I knew – someone who could be me… He just released The Zen of Losing.  Expect a full discourse/treatise on the album  – which has blown me away upon initial listening. In the meantime, as logic would dictate, the first track up on the shuffle is the last track on the album.  The album comes with my highest recommendation.  It is about as real and raw and powerful as music gets these days.

“Stolen” by Elephant Revival

Elephant Revival released Sands of Now last year as a live album/DVD.  It was recorded at the Boulder Theater.  We have been featuring this one for several months – still have a couple more tracks to go.  Enjoy!

“I’m Alright” by Angela Easterling

If I had had one more song in the shuffle with “alright” in the title, I was going to subtitle this one, the Matthew McConaughey Mix. This is another from Common Law Wife. It is an infectious uplifting song for those days when life does not feel so uplifting.

“My Dog Thinks I Am” by Lori Kelley

Our second Lori Kelley song in as many days.  Lori is one of the best songwriters working today. I know she is beginning to get some songs cut by other performers. If Nashville knows what it is doing, this is a trend that will continue.  Awesome catchy songs with a lot of spirit and heart.

“Carpetbagger Song” by Richie Owens and The Farm Bureau

Richie and company just recently released Dia De Los Azules, and I got to hear the band tear through some of those new songs last Friday.  (This is a band you want to see live as often as you can – by the way). Today, we have a timely tune from the album Tennessee.  (Speaking for myself), I don’t think of everyone who moves to Nashville as a Carpetbagger… to me it is those people who come here and begin buying up and tearing down historical landmarks and putting up non-descript over-priced condos and trendy upscale mixed-use. This is becoming an all too frequent occurrence on Music Row and elsewhere in the city.  Anyway, this song is about that kind of person/enterprise. As someone said yesterday, if this trend does not stop soon, tour buses will soon drive down Music Row and tell the wide-eyed tourist, “see that Bed, Bath, and Beyond?, Elvis (Presley or Costello) once recorded in a studio that used to be on that spot.”  Editorial over… anyway a great tune from one of my favorite Nashville bands.  The band members have all been part of the local music scene for a long time.

Lots of almost news to almost report… Expect to have more information about my and Sue Havlish’s WXNA show – Double Shot with Joe and Sue very soon.  If you have not done so, now would be a good time to follow our show on Facebook.

Also, expect more details about the forthcoming E2TG Five Year Anniversary Party (5/18 at The 5 Spot).  Just trying to lock down the final details.

Maybe, probably less soon, expect some information about the future of E2TG (it’s so bright, I have to wear shades – how is that for a relatively obscure – nearly 30 year old reference).

In the meantime, it is Tuesday when we take a look at what is “Trending” on E2TG….

“Pinprick Eyes” by Ask for Joy

Ask for Joy is a Dream Pop/Shoegaze project of Aaron Rossetto of Austin, Texas. This song comes from the recently released New Private Window EP filled with forbidden pleasures.

“Receiver” by Waco Brothers

The Waco Brothers new album Going Down in History is receiving widespread acclaim. Waco Brothers are fronted by Jon Langford from the legendary band, The Mekons. This is the first single from that album. If you want, you can check out this and some other Waco Brothers’ music on Noisetrade before you buy Going Down in History.  Really sorry I missed this band when they played Nashville late last year, but I am glad I saw Langford at The 5 Spot more recently.  Hope Waco Brothers come back here soon.

“Listening to Antique Pony Too Much” by Youngstrr Joey

As you can probably tell – if you stick around her long enough – I have a soft spot for the more experimental side of things sometimes. Youngstrr Joey from Glascow fits that bill pretty nicely.  It is experimental without being outrageously off-putting (at least for me).  Antique Pony is a Scottish band.  (I had to look that up, and now I have to check them out).

“The Fall” by The Hidden Agendas

Williamsport, PA is the hometown of Little League baseball, and the home base of The Hidden Agendas.  Glad to have them back in the shuffle.  When I’m not getting all experimental and weird, sometimes I just like some pretty straight ahead rock and roll – especially when it is done well. The band is hard at work on their new album.  Can’t wait to hear it.

“Seed” by Jonas Howden Sjøvaag’s Navyelectre

It seems like we have been featuring songs from Large Ensemble for a while, and we still have a couple more after this one.  I really dig this wonderful, original music from Norway.  Jonas Sjøvaag is a composer who has quite a bit of music out there.

“Melissa” by Amelia White

Next up, a very beautiful love song from the  album Home Sweet Hotel, which is among my favorites of 2016 so far.

“This Life… With You” by Hayes Carll and Supersuckers

Long running country/punk/rock band Supersuckers team with Texas singer-songwriter on this track from the Supersuckers’ most recent album, Holdin’ the Bag.  Yeah!  And yes, I freaking missed this at The Basement East Sunday… *shakes my head*

“Flood of Red” by Drew Worthley

Drew Worthley is a singer-songwriter the UK.  His new album is called Crucible.  This is a track from that album.  I really like this.

“Double Trouble” by Leapfrogtown

We have another track from Dreaming in Public the current album by this London based band.

I don’t have a whole lot to say today… let’s jump into the shuffle…

“Grizzly Adams” by Roberto and The Tickety 2

Okay, I love this!  I am not sure when I added this to my playlist, but if you aren’t aware, the Dan Haggerty who played Grizzly Adams in the 1970s television series passed away last month.  This song is not really about that, it is a hilarious stab at (mostly) young guys who try to look like Grizzly Adams to “hide their weak chins”.  Roberto Cassani was born in Italy but now lives in Scotland.   I have to find out more about this…

“I Fell Asleep” by exedra

Another track from Elemental – the new album/new project from Jeremy Gluck. The album was released on Monday, February 1.  It’s ethereal, dreamy and oh so cool. Check it out.

“Skeleton” by Elf Power

Elf Power are from Athens, Georgia and part of the Elephant 6 collective. This song is from their 4th album The Winter is Coming which was released in 2000.  Elephant 6 is a big influence on several of the Dord Music Group artists, and I am pretty sure it was one of those guys who put this is my mind.

“Running Back Home” by Michelle Lewis

Another pretty song from the Live at Club Passim EP from singer-songwriter Michelle Lewis.

“Summertime” by Ships Have Sailed

Ships That Sail are an L.A. Alternative duo. The recently released their debut album Moodswings.  This is my first listen.  It is a shimmering song.  I was just reading that the album is tells a story from beginning to end. I will need to listen again with that in mind.  Good song.

“Just Fine” by Benchmarks

Benchmarks have been working on their follow-up to American Night and doing some short tours.  I am excited to hear the new music.  This is the final track we have from their debut (as Benchmarks).  Look for a solo Todd Farrell performance of this song in the Video playlist.  Also, Benchmarks guitarist Eli Rhodes celebrated a birthday on Monday.  And yeah, if anybody is wondering, I’m just fine.

“Words Are Cheap” by Leapfrogtown

Man, I really dig this song.  So far I’ve liked everything I’ve heard from Dreaming in Public.  The band formed in London in 2013.  Catchy as hell!

“A Better Day Tomorrow” by Le Folli Arie

A gorgeous song from the Italian prog-pop band. One of the English language songs on their self-titled album.

“Alex” by Bay Kee

Bay Kee is the solo project of Christine Spilka of The Jean Jackets (one of the MCFK bands we have featured here before).  Wonder Wild was released in mid January. This is crystal clear poppy indie rock music.  Really liking what I’ve heard so far.

“I Am” by Outta the Furnace

We close things out with a our first listen to this hard hitting three-piece blues rock band from southeast Virginia. This is no frills, straight ahead rock and roll with a authentic blues feel.  Expect to hear more from this band here.

Featured Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Snow Day Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); Be sure to “Like” Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

A rare snow day off work, but the shuffle must go on….

Had a blast last night before the winter weather descended… a night at The Family Wash for a pair of CD Release shows by two of my favorite East Nashvillians.  Amelia White and The Blue Souvenirs (tonight featuring Sergio Webb, Justin Amaral, Megan Palmer, and Ron Eoff). Amelia’s new album is called Home Sweet Hotel.  Stone Cupid (Julie Christensen, Sergio Webb, Chris Tench, Bones Hillman, and Steve Latanation). Stone Cupid’s new album is called The Cardinal.  Amelia and band were wonderful as always, and Julie and Stone Cupid rocked the house.

To the shuffle:

“You Left the Water Running” by Amy Black

Amy Black kicks off our Snow Day shuffle with a classic Muscle Shoals song from her Muscle Shoals Session album.  This song has been recorded by many people including Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett.  The song was written by Dan Penn, Rick Hall, and Oscar Franks.

“The World Belongs to You” by Indigenous Engines

Andrew Adkins has a new album out under his own name, and we will get to that very soon, but this is another track from one of two EPs he released in 2015 under the Indigenous Engines name.  This song is from the EP Werewolves.

“St. Sinner” by Exedra

Some newer music from our a E2TG favorite Jeremy Gluck.  Exedra features Gluck along with Darrall Knight and Mark Elliott.  The album is called Elemental, and the music is ethereal, dreampoppy, shoegazey, and all kinds of awesome.

“Sorry” by Youngstrr Joey

Our second listen to London based Youngstrr Joey from Grilled Wiig.  Really digging this music.

“Exotica” by Exedra

An instrumental tune from Elemental… takes me to a different place….

“Promise” by Leapfrogtown

Our second listen to London based Leapfrogtown from Dreaming in Public.  I like this band a bunch.

“Columbus Stockade Blues” by Richie Owens and the Farm Bureau

Richie Owens and the Farm Bureau are getting ready to release the follow up to Tennessee (from which this track comes) which will be called Dia de los Azules. If the first single (which was recently released) and the recent live shows are any indication that album is going to be a great one. This track is a civil war story about a Tennessee boy being held in a Union prison in Columbus, Georgia.

“Elevator” by Artur U and the New City Limits

This is, I think, our last track to feature from Holiday  From Eternity.  The “Earie” award winning Finnish band have promised some big plans for 2016.  “Elevator” is one of my favorite songs from the current album, and it has a pretty infectious groove to it.

“Backbone” by Zachariah Red

Hopefully you read my recent review of Backbone. If not, it is now up on No Depression so give it a read.  This is the title track from the album which is now available on iTunes if that is your preferred outlet.  The live video (for a different song)  features Zach along with some of favorite Nashville folks, Taylor Alexander, Drew Kohl, and Lindsay Ellyn.

“Ode to a Friend” by Jon Magnusson

And we close out the shuffle with a moving song from a singer-songwriter from Stockholm.  His 3 song EP is called Dina drommar (with umlauts over the o that I do not know how to type).  This is the only English song on the EP. It is a tribute to a childhood friend who died at age 15.  It is extremely moving to me because I lost a friend at close to the same age – 35 years ago this month.

Featured Friday Morning Music Shuffle – MIDI Version Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); Be sure to “Like” Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

In the wee hours of the morning, I posted my review of “Shoreline Sessions” a new EP and video project from Weapons of Minor Disruption which features Rob from #E2TG favorite The Danbury Lie. Please check it out. It is really cool (that is the short version of my review, btw).

Last night another of those quintessential East Nashville musical happenings.  Hanging out in a kind of funky, kind of divey space with awesome people (many of them incredible musicians) listening to top notch music.  Last night, it was the East Room with Kent Eugene Goolsby, Lew Card, and Joey Kneiser and the Living Flames.

Tonight, #E2TG Artist of the Year Jon Latham is playing a FREE show at Soulshine Pizza beginning at 7:00.  It is a wrap up to his being Local Artist of the Week for Lightning 100.

On to the Featured Friday Shuffle….

“Anyone’s Game” by Leapfrogtown

Leapfrogtown are a London based band.  This song is from their forthcoming album Dreaming on Public which is due out in a few weeks.  This was my first listen, and I really dug this.  Expect more….

“Pinyin” (MIDI Version) by Batkhi Dahn

So far, we have played the Instrumental Version, the regular version, and now the MIDI version.  One more version of the latest Batkhi Dahn single to go. Autotune version coming soon.

“Soft Apocalypse” by Smokey the Firebear

Between the Weapons of Minor Disruption review, the Batkhi Dahn song, and now this one – it is kind of like Connecticut day around here.  I have never been to Connecticut.  Seems like I need to remedy that.  “Soft Apocalypse” is rough mix from the album Ohm Atlanta which is due out in February.  The rough mixes have been taken off of Bandcamp in anticipation of the release of the completed album, but there is a ton of music and sounds still out there. Including the CD version of BNGFKR for the incredible price of just $420 (only six remaining – they are going fast… okay probably not).

“Shot in the Dark” by Le Folli Arie

Le Folli Arie are a Prog-Pop band from Milan.  A very interesting sound that I like quite a bit.  Check them out.

“Sinking Ship” by Killing Kuddles

Of late, I have been rocking my Killing Kuddles swag around East Nashville. He has been a favorite around here for a long time and continues to be.  This is a single released last year that I think you will like.

“Harperia” by vod

We featured the instrumental version of this political song from Canada.  Here is the version that features the vocal abilities of Gabriel of The Gabriel Construct whose album Interior City was featured heavily here a couple of years ago.  I could not find a video for this song, so in the Video Playlist below you will find footage from the live debut of The Gabriel Construct from last October.

“Get It” by Daphne Willis

A ridiculously infectious and upbeat song from Nashville singer-songwriter Daphne Willis.  It is the title track of her recent EP. So, do like the title says – get it!

“Alien’s Trip” by Le Folli Arie

We close with another cool track from Le Folli Arie.
