Nashville’s own – Daniel Pujol with a rocking tune from his 2011 EP.

“Sign O’ The Times” by Prince from Sign O’ The Times

The title track from Prince’s 1987 album.  I picked this up at the thrift store the same day I bought the Abigail Washburn and Minton Sparks CDs. Seemed like a good fit to me.

Ear to the Ground favorites Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray were featured on the NPR show Sound Opinion as a “Buried Treasure”.  Regular and attentive readers of this blog will have unburied this particular treasure a good while back.  This is the last song in our playlist from their incredible album Lean into the Wind, and this track features the fabulous keyboard work of the late Ikey Owens (Free Moral Agents, Mars Volta, Jack White) who tragically and sadly passed away last week.

“Punk Rockin’ Honky Tonk Girl” by Tim Carroll from Opening Up/If I Could

Two things to share about this song – 1.  At the end of this song on Opening Up, Tim Carroll gives a brief account of his musical journey and mentions one of my favorite bands, Rank and File.  2.  Every time I hear this song, a particular memory of mine comes back to me.  This was sometime in the 80s, at a benefit show for a local club called Elliston Square (now The End).  There was an awesome lineup of some of the cool indie bands of the day, and opening the show was Marty Stuart joined by at least one of the Dillards.  As a young punk beginning to hear Country music influence in my favorite music and still trying to reconcile that to my still strong belief that Country music was for old folks – this was culture shock, and it was also pretty darn awesome. The deal was sealed for me when I saw this tall, beautiful girl in country meets punk attire dosey-doeing  to Marty Stuart.

Monday Morning (and Evening) Music Shuffle – Two Saints Mix

Well, it’s late for the shuffle, but circumstance kept me from posting.  As compensation, I extended the shuffle which means tons of music and just a bit of my celebrated wisdom.  That last line is ego disguised as wry humility cleverly cloaked in a veneer of ego.

You’d think I would be embarrassed by having a Darrin Bradbury song in the shuffle almost every day… you’d be wrong.  He has been releasing tons of great music over the past several months, and I’m loving almost all of it.   True Love is the title track from the album of the same name which shares the title with this song.  The album was released in February, and he has released two other records since then.

“Lone Star Souvenir” by Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray from Lean into the Wind

One of my favorite songs from the remarkable Lean into the Wind by Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray.  There is a folky theme running through many of the songs in the shuffle.  This is a great folky song.  The video we found is Miss Shevaughn by herself doing this song.

The Great Jester is the magnum opus from the elusive and awesome The Danbury Lie. Over 11 minutes with several movements which run from baroque sounding folk music to discordant metal and back again.  It seems cheap to try to summarize this amazing song in a couple of lines. Fortunately, you can experience it for yourself – see the video, follow The Danbury Lie Facebook page for more clues about The Great Jester… Then download the hell out of the song, and if you can, throw some $ in the virtual hat.

Full-Ride Friday Music Shuffle – Covered in Dust Mix

I didn’t sleep particularly well last night, and so I knew I would need some cool tunes to make it through the morning commute. “Liberty Bell” by  The Gathering from How to Measure a Planet (6:01)

The first of two songs with bells in the shuffle today comes from a Dutch progressive metal/alternative rock band which formed in 1999.  I’ll be honest, I don’t know when I added this to my playlist, but here it is, and it’s a atmospherically cool way to start the morning.

How about this awesome track from Tomas Doncker’s Power of the Trinity release.  Tomas and band are bringing their Howlin’ Wolf tribute to the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City tomorrow night. If you are in the city, you should be there.

 

“Pizza N Drugs” by Darrin Bradbury from Death in my Left Ear (2:29)

Darrin Bradbury brings us the first of two songs which mention types of Italian food with a little ditty about spending a Sunday with Pizza, Drugs, and someone special.  Darrin just started a weekly series with the awesome Tim Carroll at a dive bar in East Nashville called Fran’s.  It’s every Wednesday night, and you and I really need to check it out.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Superstitious Phobia Mix

Here at #E2TG, we pride ourselves on bringing great music to your internets. What we lack in time and exclusive access, we try to make up for in pure quality and absolutely insane diversity.
