Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Don’t Think Twice Mix

I’m kind of wiped out today – so no precursor – let’s get right to the shuffle:

“The Other Side” (acoustic) by Madi Diaz from Stripped Chopped + Screwed/The Other Side

Former Nashville resident Madi Diaz tearing it up with a stripped down version of her single.

“The Shower Scene” by HOMESHAKE from In the Shower

Homeshake is the pseudonym of Peter Sager – a Canadian musician.  I grabbed this from the New Release lineup on Freegal.  Some pretty cool lo-fi jazzy, rhythm and blues – with ambient shower sounds…

“Mayday” by Pujol from Pujol Sampler/Nasty, Brutal, and Short EP

Nashville’s own – Daniel Pujol with a rocking tune from his 2011 EP.

“Sign O’ The Times” by Prince from Sign O’ The Times

The title track from Prince’s 1987 album.  I picked this up at the thrift store the same day I bought the Abigail Washburn and Minton Sparks CDs. Seemed like a good fit to me.

“!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); Freddie, It’s OK” by Kimono Dragons from The Entrée (A Built4BBQ Sampler)/Summer of ’14 Demo

As I understand it, Kimono Dragons are kind of a Built4BBQ super-group that specializes in instrumental surf music.  I can dig it.

“Bleed Me” by Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray from Lean into the Wind

Ear to the Ground favorites Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray were featured on the NPR show Sound Opinion as a “Buried Treasure”.  Regular and attentive readers of this blog will have unburied this particular treasure a good while back.  This is the last song in our playlist from their incredible album Lean into the Wind, and this track features the fabulous keyboard work of the late Ikey Owens (Free Moral Agents, Mars Volta, Jack White) who tragically and sadly passed away last week.

“Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright” (Bob Dylan cover) by Flatt and Scruggs from Changin’ Times

At Ear to the Ground, we have no problem bringing you bluegrass versions of Bob Dylan songs – especially when they are done by the legendary Flatt and Scruggs.

“Missionary Son” by Emily Wolfe from Roulette

And we close things out with an excellent track from Austin-based Emily Wolfe.  We grabbed this one of NoiseTrade, and we will have more to come from Emily Wolfe.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Flinty Mix

Back to a normal-sized shuffle…. we have some cool tunes – let’s go!

“Flinty Kind of Woman” by Dar Williams from The Honesty Room

One of my favorite artists of all time…  from her 1995 album.

“Blue Skies” by Victoria Williams from Sings Some Ol’ Songs

Ms. Williams part II.  Doing a heart-shattering version of the Irving Berlin classic.

“Amsterdam Moon” by The Mavericks from In Time

From their reunion album – Raul Malo and company sounding better than ever.

“Punk Rockin’ Honky Tonk Girl” by Tim Carroll from Opening Up/If I Could

Two things to share about this song – 1.  At the end of this song on Opening Up, Tim Carroll gives a brief account of his musical journey and mentions one of my favorite bands, Rank and File.  2.  Every time I hear this song, a particular memory of mine comes back to me.  This was sometime in the 80s, at a benefit show for a local club called Elliston Square (now The End).  There was an awesome lineup of some of the cool indie bands of the day, and opening the show was Marty Stuart joined by at least one of the Dillards.  As a young punk beginning to hear Country music influence in my favorite music and still trying to reconcile that to my still strong belief that Country music was for old folks – this was culture shock, and it was also pretty darn awesome. The deal was sealed for me when I saw this tall, beautiful girl in country meets punk attire dosey-doeing  to Marty Stuart.

“Do You Want My Job” by Little Village from Little Village

One of the stand out tracks on the Little Village album.

“Can’t Stay Young” by Tim Carroll from Opening Up/All Kinds of Pain!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);

No you can’t… but sometimes you can fake it for a while…

“Kiss and Tell” by Lael Summer from Burden to Bear

Another sultry number from Ms. Lael Summer and another video from a True Groove All-Stars show in New York.  If you’re in New York, check out The True Groove All-Stars as they continue their residency at Milk River this Thursday.

“Drifter’s Compass” by Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray from Lean Into The Wind

And this my friends, is why I love Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray so much.  This and the fact that they are such wonderful people.

“1st Assumptions vs. 2nd Doubts (remix)” by aCr from ghost note manifest

We close with some experimental progressive hard rock from Texas. aCr from the band Liquid Casing  from his recent solo project.

Monday Morning (and Evening) Music Shuffle – Two Saints Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); window.amznpubstudioTag = “eartothegro00-20”; http://ps-us.amazon-adsystem.com/domains/eartothegro00-20_3dcd3a52-1a1a-4afe-a2fd-aaba8e251afc.js

Well, it’s late for the shuffle, but circumstance kept me from posting.  As compensation, I extended the shuffle which means tons of music and just a bit of my celebrated wisdom.  That last line is ego disguised as wry humility cleverly cloaked in a veneer of ego.

In case you missed it, the Ear to the Ground review of Darrin Bradbury’s Motel Oatmeal was featured for a time on the front page of No Depression – the preeminent Americana magazine/website,

The review is still a featured review, and you can read it here.

Now, we have a ton of music to get to….

“New Language” by Sam Davison from Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen: Section 5/Always Around

Love this song!

“Montgomery” by Tim Carroll from Opening Up/The Devil is a Busy Man

The big city won’t change me!

“Azmari Man” by Tomas Doncker from Power of the Trinity

Tomas Doncker is a Global Soul master!

“With Every Beat” by The Features from Old Familiar Melodies – 2008-2013/The Features

Tennessee band that done good – The Features!

“When the Pumps Run Dry” by Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray from Lean into the Wind

Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray are awesome people.  I couldn’t find a video for this song so I went way back to CXCW 2012

“Mirage” by The Queers from Surf Goddess/Beat Off (Tommy James and the Shondells Cover)

Punk rock!

“Crippler King” by Delta Spirit from Lost and Found/I Think I’ve Found It

Delta Spirit!

“Confederates” by Michael Rank and Stag from In the Weeds

One of two North Carolina artists – Dig this song! I wanting to hear more.

“We’ll Take It From There” by Deena from Rock River

My next E2TG Review – it’s in the can – waiting for the right moment.

“Quiet (St. Francis)” by The Grimm Generation from The Big Fame

First of two Saints in the mix… thus the Two Saints Mix….  Good friends, awesome band

“FOH” by Superchunk from Merge Records Summer Sampler 2013/I Hate Music

#2 from the Tar Heel State…

“Woah-oh” by Francie Moon and the Great Outdoors from Francie Moon and the Great Outdoors

Another from Francie Moon – I couldn’t find this song on video so I picked a video done here in Nashville.

“I Miss the Zoo” by Joseph Arthur from Redemption City

Joseph Arthur recently did a Lou Reed tribute album – the Lou Reed influence is strong on this recording – I think,

“House Drinks” by The Grimm Generation from The Big Fame

#2 from the fabulous Grimms of Connecticut.  Drinks are on the house!

“You’re the Best Thing” by The Style Council from The Singular Adventures of the Style Council/Cafe Bleu(UK)/My Ever Changing Moods(US)

This is what smooth sounds like!

“This Disorder” by The Features from Old Familiar Melodies/The Features

Dig this song. The core of The Features are from the next town over from my hometown.  Coincidentally, that is near where The Grey A’s new album My Country was recorded.  Plus The Grey A recently opened for The Features… Hey, wait a minute is that really a coincidence? I don’t know….

“Tree of Evolution” by The Grey A from My Country

Speaking of The Grey A.  They were the subject of my first No Depression featured review – back when it was exciting,,, yawn… I kid! A song about Evolution that you can and should dance to…

“It’s About Soul” by Lael Summer from Burden to Bear

Another from Lael Summer’s awesome True Groove released Burden to Bear album,

“St. Catherine’s Statue” by The Minus 5 from Through a Faraway Window: A Tribute to Jimmy Silva (Jimmy Silva and the Goats cover)

Groovy song from The Minus 5.  I couldn’t find a video so I included a video of The Minus 5 doing some covers with special guests Mike Mills and Bill Berry, and a video of the late Jimmy Silva and the Goats.

“Class Historian” by BRONCHO from An Introduction to BRONCHO/Just Enough Hip to be a Woman

And we close out with a song from the forthcoming album by Oklanhoma band BRONCHO.  This my first listen, and I dig it!

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Lose Your Teeth Mix

We have a great shuffle today with tons of E2TG favorites and a couple of cool songs….

Jump!

“Tryin’ to Get to Heaven” by Bob Dylan from Time Out of Mind

Robert Zimmerman’s 30th album… we grabbed this off the latest Feel Bad for You mixtape.  You should, too.  The video features a cover version of the song by Ms. Lucinda Williams.

“Julie Sue” by The Foresters from Living Hold

Recently, we have seen The Foresters stretch into some exciting new musical territory.  On this track from their latest album, they return to their pop punk roots with a  rocking song.  The video

“Dead Mans Cause” by The Grey A from My Country

The more I hear from the forthcoming The Grey A album, the more I like.  This is a really awesome song.

http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/album=1913716850/size=large/bgcol=ffffff/linkcol=0687f5/package=3941800323/transparent=true/

“The Rider” by Dirty Old Town from Dirty Old Town

Dirty Old Town is from Denmark, but he rides a familiar dark, folk road, and he rides it well.

“True Love” by Darrin Bradbury from True Love

You’d think I would be embarrassed by having a Darrin Bradbury song in the shuffle almost every day… you’d be wrong.  He has been releasing tons of great music over the past several months, and I’m loving almost all of it.   True Love is the title track from the album of the same name which shares the title with this song.  The album was released in February, and he has released two other records since then.

“Lone Star Souvenir” by Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray from Lean into the Wind

One of my favorite songs from the remarkable Lean into the Wind by Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray.  There is a folky theme running through many of the songs in the shuffle.  This is a great folky song.  The video we found is Miss Shevaughn by herself doing this song.

“The Great Jester” by The Danbury Lie from The Great Jester (single)!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);

The Great Jester is the magnum opus from the elusive and awesome The Danbury Lie. Over 11 minutes with several movements which run from baroque sounding folk music to discordant metal and back again.  It seems cheap to try to summarize this amazing song in a couple of lines. Fortunately, you can experience it for yourself – see the video, follow The Danbury Lie Facebook page for more clues about The Great Jester… Then download the hell out of the song, and if you can, throw some $ in the virtual hat.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Dust Off Mix

Back after a day off from blogging.  We have eight cooler than necessary tracks…  let’s jump to it!

“Instant Crush” by Daft Punk from Random Access Memories

Everyone’s favorite robot-helmeted French electronic musicians with a song from their powerhouse 2013 album. This song features Julian Casablancas from The Strokes.

“Digital” by Rewpart from 1/2

Some cool music from London and Rewpart who I met through the about.me website.

“Foolish Pride” by Tipi Valley” from Blue Moon EP

More great music from long-time E2TG fave Tipi Valley from Wales.

“Away” by Ben Pagano from Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen: Section 5/Robot Jazz

Seriously, if you haven’t downloaded the Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen: Section 5 album yet, what are you waiting for.  While you’re at check out the Robot Jazz album by Ben Pagano, too.  Do it! I’ll wait.

“Brushed the Dust Off (Lean into the Wind)” by Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray from Lean into the Wind

I needed to hear this song today…  Any shuffle that includes Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray has to be good.

“Way Up High” by The Foresters from Living Hold

More good stuff from the Nork brothers of Connecticut!

“Cliff Bar” by Darrin Bradbury from The Almost Great Crepe’s (Demos)

Darrin Bradbury turns a phrase about as well as anyone I can think of, and I can think of a lot of people who can turn a phrase pretty darn well…    We’ve included a video sneak peek of the forthcoming new EP due out tomorrow called Motel Oatmeal

“Could We See” by Grounded from untitled

Close things out with a former E2TG featured artist from back when we had featured artists.  Grounded are from Florida, and I’m not sure if the album is titled “untitled” or if is actually untitled, but it has some cool music on it – including this one.

Full-Ride Friday Music Shuffle – Covered in Dust Mix

I didn’t sleep particularly well last night, and so I knew I would need some cool tunes to make it through the morning commute. With that in mind, I decided to run my usual shuffle for the full ride into work, and thus was born a new feature* at Ear to the Ground called Full-Ride Friday (hashtag #frf – patent pending** – void where prohibited) **there is not patent pending…!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);

* Bloggers Note: I sure hope no one notices that about 90% of the time I announce I new feature, it never appears again.  If they notice, they may realize that I’m just making this up as I go around and thus may figure out that I’m not a real music blogger.

Anyway, I hit shuffle and 21 songs later, I made to my desk to begin my day…   Go past the jump to experience the first (and maybe last) ever Full-Ride Friday Shuffle!

I’m sorry for putting you all in such danger”

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Bells and Italian Food Mix

The 700th post here at Ear to the Ground arrives with another great mix of music. We have two sub-themes going in this otherwise loosely constructed collection of songs.  Bells and Italian Food.  Read on…

“Liberty Bell” by  The Gathering from How to Measure a Planet (6:01)

The first of two songs with bells in the shuffle today comes from a Dutch progressive metal/alternative rock band which formed in 1999.  I’ll be honest, I don’t know when I added this to my playlist, but here it is, and it’s a atmospherically cool way to start the morning.

“Ethiopian War Chant” by Tomas Doncker from Power of the Trinity (4:26)

How about this awesome track from Tomas Doncker’s Power of the Trinity release.  Tomas and band are bringing their Howlin’ Wolf tribute to the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City tomorrow night. If you are in the city, you should be there.

“Pizza N Drugs” by Darrin Bradbury from Death in my Left Ear (2:29)

Darrin Bradbury brings us the first of two songs which mention types of Italian food with a little ditty about spending a Sunday with Pizza, Drugs, and someone special.  Darrin just started a weekly series with the awesome Tim Carroll at a dive bar in East Nashville called Fran’s.  It’s every Wednesday night, and you and I really need to check it out.

“Foggy Notion” by Jane Wiedlin from American Velvet: A Tribute to The Velvet Underground (4:07)

Go-Go Jane Wiedlin covers one of my favorite Velvet Underground songs (read one of my favorite songs) from one of who know how many VU tribute albums.

“Rigatoni Macaroni” by Sam Davison from Always Around (2:17)

Are you hungry yet?  New York singer/songwriter and bassist. With a fun song from his stellar Always Around album which was released last October.

“Dream Away” by The Yugos from Life is Awesome and Then You Live Forever (4:25)

Are a young band from Covington, Kentucky.  They came to my attention via a post by Dan Stuart (Green on Red, Danny and Dusty, solo), and when Dan talks, I listen. I’m glad I did.  Cool stuff.

“When Silence Was Golden” by David Schnaufer from Appalachian Picking Society (3:05)

Some sweet Appalachian music from the late, great, Nashville dulcimer player David Schnaufer.

“Jericho” by The Delta Saints from Death Letter Jubilee (4:18)

First of a couple of songs by Nashville-based Louisiana-tinged rock band The Delta Saints.

“Bell Ringer” by Gumshen from Protronica (7:06)

Our second “bell” related song comes from this Seattle based band.

“Albatross” by Stoney from More Than Animals (4:14)

We have featured several songs from the latest album by Austin based Stoney.

“Blank Maps” by Cold Specks from  I Predict a Graceful Expulsion (3:12)

I may be late to the game, but consider me a Cold Specks fan.  This is an awesome song, and I want to hear more.

“Drink it Slow” by The Delta Saints from Death Letter Jubilee (4:08)

Another great track from The Delta Saints.  My music play crapped out after this, and I had to restart the shuffle, but what a way to go.

“Long Way Home” by Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray from Lean into the Wind (4:29)

A beautiful heart wrenching track from the latest album by our friends and CXCW darlings Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray.

“Diamond Joe” by Guy Clark (with Verlon Thompson) from Guy Clark (2:51)

We close things out with a song that’s been in my active playlist for a long time. Glad it finally came up.  An classic performed by a pair of legendary Nashville songwriters.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Superstitious Phobia Mix

Here at #E2TG, we pride ourselves on bringing great music to your internets. What we lack in time and exclusive access, we try to make up for in pure quality and absolutely insane diversity.

Today’s Shuffle makes a whirlwind trip from latter day Country music pioneer Sturgill Simpson all the way to a lusciously bizarre Nina Hagen cover of a Neil Diamond penned The Monkees’ song.  In between, we stop in and visit with #E2TG favorites Tomas Doncker, Marla Mase, Darrin Bradbury, and twice with Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray, and we feature three Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen related artists.  Plus a bunch more… here’s the list

“Some Days” by Sturgill Simpson from Sturgill Simpson

a live version in the video playlist

“Other Voices” by the Orwells from Other Voices EP

a backyard version in the playlist

“Pachyderms” by The Tye Trybe from Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen: Section 5/Word is Born EP

“On my Mind, In my Heart” by Jesse Dee from Alligator Records: 21st Century Blues and Roots/On My Mind/In My Heart

“Lord of the Highway” by Joe Ely from Lord of the Highway
a fairly recent live version of this classic (Trivia: on a legendary night in my deep past, I heard Joe Ely, Bruce Springsteen, and Lou Reed on a local college station, and it set my musical course for years to come)

“You and I” by Jesse Turits from Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen: Section 5/Rumble Strips

a different Jesse Turits song.

“Oh, Tornado” by Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray from Lean into the Wind
