Well here we are… late, but I did listen to this shuffle this morning.  Been on the road most of the day, so I’m just posting it now.   I got to keep it brief, but check out the great music.

“Notes” by Mothers

Another track from Panamanian Times. Just flat out cool punkish rock from New York City.  From the Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen collective.

“Fire and Flood” by Joe Sundell

This song has been lingering around my playlist for a long while.  From Joe Sundell’s awesome album, The Hat Thief.  Dig this song.

“Are You Gonna Be My Friend?” by Drew Kohl

Our first shuffle listen to Sweetheart EP by Drew Kohl.  We first heard Drew’s original voice as part of Young America.  Drew tackles the subject of love in some interesting ways, and Sweetheart is a really good record.  But don’t take my word for it, read what I had to say…. 

“Turn Me On” by Tipi Valley

Ed Toff (a.k.a. Tipi Valley) has been a favorite of Ear to the Ground for several years.  His latest release is called Dust.  Tipi Valley is from Swansea in the UK, and he doesn’t use You Tube.  So, you will need to listen to Turn Me On using the widget below

Hands down one of the best shows I’ve seen this year was John Moreland at The 5 Spot (just a couple of hours after seeing him at Music City Roots).  He managed to silence both crowds with his gritty, gut-wrenching take on Americana/Roots/Folk music.  Hands down one of the best records of 2015 is Moreland’s High on Tulsa Heat.  Here is a track from that album.

“H.S.K.T.” by Sylvan Esso

Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes.  Sylvan Esso is Amelia Meath of Mountain Man and Nick Sanborn who does electronic producing under the name Made of Oak.  This song is simple yet brilliant, infectious without being obnoxious.  

“Lone Star Song” by Grant Lee Buffalo

Might Joe Moon was a Goodwill CD bin find, and I have really enjoyed discovering this album.  Lone Star Song may be my favorite song on the album, but I’m not sure.  It is a favorite, though…

“Jim Along Josie” by The Barefoot Movement

I can count on one finger the number of young, tradition folk bands that I have met in a chance encounter at the Cash Cabin Studio.  The Barefoot Movement would be that one finger.  Off of their EP The High Road.  Jim Along Josie is a foot-stomping traditional folk song.

“Ground” by Terrible

Terrible are Nashville band who are anything but… “Ground” is a song from their album Oakwood which was released earlier this month.

If trudging through the work week is like climbing a mountain, then my question has to be is Wednesday really the day we get over the hump or is it just a day that finds us clinging desperately to the sheer face of a rocky cliff and wondering how the hell we are going to make it the rest of the way?  Food for thought… happy Wednesday!

“Get Drunk” by Drag the River

From the 2002 Album closed.  Ear to the Ground just presents song titles, we make no statements for or against the sentiments expressed in such song titles.  Drag the River’s membership includes/has included members of the band All who were previously discussed in posts about the band The Descendents.  Both this song and The Descendent’s song were included on the February Feel Bad for You Mixtape of “short songs”  This song is considerably longer than the other.

“Graves” by Whiskey Shivers

Speaking of Raucous roots based music…  gotta love The Whiskey Shivers.

“The Great Game” by The Great Game

The Great Game is the name of the band, the album, and the song.  It is New World music with an original and decidedly European sound, and I kind of like it… a ton.

“The Almost Great Lakes” by Darrin Bradbury

A live recording of a song that may be on Darrin’s new album or maybe not, what do I know.  It is about the great state of Wisconsin.  Everyone knows about the Great Lakes, but what about those that didn’t quite make that cut?  Now you know about them, too.  I could not find a video of this song, so look it up on Bandcamp to hear/buy it.

“Nearly Lost You” by The Torn Images

We still have a couple of tracks from the fantastic album Reviver by The Torn Images.  This song has all of the elements of a great true alternative Rock song.  It’s not poppy, it’s not light and fluffy… It is just Gut wrenching emotion backed by killer guitar licks.

“Silent Breather” by Tipi Valley

Found out recently that Jeremy Gluck who we have been featuring quite a bit recently lives in the vicinity of Tipi Valley, a long time favorite of all of us here at Ear to the Ground (it’s just me by the way).  This is another killer track from the latest Tipi Valley release called Dust.

“Middle of America” (Worktape) by Will Hoge

Ahead of his latest album, Small Town Dreams (which was released last week), Will Hoge released a Noisetrade sampler of some rough (worktapes) of a few songs from that album.  This is one of those tracks.  Hoge is one of Nashville’s best.

“What I Have Not Got” by Tim Lee 3

A live version of the lead track from their 2010 double album Raucous Americanus… Tim Lee 3 are not a quiet band.   If you are in Knoxville for Record Store Day, you can catch them at Lost and Found Records along with their spin off band, Bark, the last of the full grown men – Webb Wilder, and a host of others.

“I Know What Boys Like” by The Waitresses

If you, like me, were alive in the 1980s chances are pretty good that you heard this song many, many times. The Waitresses were from Akron, Ohio. The Waitresses were the creation of Chris Butler who came out of the same Akron music scene that produced DEVO, The James Gang, and Chrissy Hynde of The Pretenders.  Lead vocalist Patty Donahue passed away in 1996 at the age of 40.

“See About You” by Joe Nolan

Another track from the forthcoming Blue Turns Black remaster by Nashville songwriter and writer Joe Nolan. 

“Bleed” by Jeremiah Tall

My latest Noisetrade “discovery” is Jeremiah Tall from Bucks County, Pennsylvania.  He is a one man band that plays a pretty awesome brand of folk/rock music.  This is the final track on his latest album, Walking which has been out just under a month.

After a long, productive weekend, I am back at the work week – shuffle thing….

On to the shuffle:

“Harley” by Don Henry

Don Henry’s 1991 album Wild in the Backyard was one of my favorites – great mostly humorous songwriting from a top Nashville writer.  I lost possession of the CD at some point, but the good news is I am pretty sure it ended up in the hands of a friend who went on to be a pretty awesome songwriter, too.  I was happy to come across this live version of a song from that album which was recorded at the Bluebird Café here in Nashville.

“Bozeman” by Matt Prater

I am seriously digging on Matt Prater’s Tables and Chairs album which was released earlier this year, and this is one of my favorite songs, a classic Boy meets… song. Great hook and a fun twist.

“Wave As We Run” by Sean Watkins

Another great song from the album, All I Do is Lie by Nickel Creek guitarist Sean Watkins.

“Tension” by Minutemen

Originally from the 1st 12inch release by post-punk legends the Minutemen – The Punch Line.  That record and What Makes a Man Start Fires were later compiled on the CD Release called Post-Mersh Vol. 1. The song was written by Mike Watt and the late Martin Tamburovich who was part of the band The Reactionaries which was a predecessor band to the Minutemen. 

“My Baby Don’t Understand Me” by Natalie Prass

The opening track from the self-titled debut album by one-time Nashville resident Natalie Prass.  The album was released earlier this year, and debuted at number 50 on the UK album charts. 

“Walked to You” by Tipi Valley

Dust is the latest release from E2TG favorite Tipi Valley of Swansea UK.  The song uses electronic sounds and effects to convey a gorgeous song.  Please take a look at Tipi Valley’s 2015 CXCW video located below the Video Playlist.  The video, like all of Tipi Valley’s videos, is available on Vimeo and not You Tube.

“The Extra Mile” by Jeremy Gluck/Robert Coyne

Another great track from the album Memory Deluxe: I Knew Buffalo Bill 2 which is a follow up to 1987’s album I Knew Buffalo Bill and featured Gluck along with Nikki Sudden, Rowland S. Howard, Jeffrey Lee Pierce, and Epic Soundtracks.

“One O’ The Girls” by Phranc

Phranc’s song about fitting in on the women’s swim team.. from Folksinger.

“Hangin’ Downtown” by The Replacements

From Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash.  A song about – hanging downtown because there is nothing else to do.

“Tear Me Down” by Ron Muga

Another cool song from the album Wonderful Doom by New York singer-songwriter Ron Muga.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Poorer Every Day Mix

So, Nashville is getting a lot of hype these days… East Nashville more specifically.  Is it deserved or not? I’ll let someone else answer that deep and complicated question. However, what I will do, is tell you just a bit about one particular night in East Nashville (last night to be specific), and I will let you process this information how you will….

The night began with David Olney in his penultimate* Happy Hour show at The 5 Spot opening his show with an incredibly awesome recitation of Kubla Khan, and the night ended (almost) about six hours later at Fran’s Eastside with Tim Carroll and Darrin Bradbury doing a version of Freebird that made me a fan of that song (or at least a fan of their version).

We have a mixed bag of cool tunes in today shuffle, so let’s do it!

“Cigarette Daydreams” by Cage the Elephant from Melophobia

Cage the Elephant are from just north of Nashville (Bowling Green, Kentucky). Melophobia was recorded here in Nashville and was produced by Jay Joyce who was in the Nashville band In Pursuit back in my formative years.

Daniel Pujol is one of Nashville’s best.  From his latest album Kludge and taken from a NoiseTrade sampler.

One of the best Blues guitarists around, and a good friend of Ear to the Ground.  Mark Robinson is currently nominated for a Nashville Independent Music award.  This song – a take on a blues standard is from his first album.

Full-Ride Friday Music Shuffle – Covered in Dust Mix

I didn’t sleep particularly well last night, and so I knew I would need some cool tunes to make it through the morning commute.
