It’s April 1 – no joke.  Today, D. Boon would have been 58 years old.  Hard to believe he had been gone for over 30 years.  The music he made in his too short life was very important to me.

“New Yorkian Dairy Company” by Jonas H. Sjøvaag’s Navyelectre

 Another track from this Norwegian artist. I am not sure if this is considered a bonus-track for the Large Ensemble album, but in any case, it is a great song.

“Don’t F It Up” by Chase Walker Band

Chase Walker is a young blues guitar prodigy. He and his band have an album forthcoming called Not Quite Legal.  This is our first listen, and yeah it is good! The “F” word is only censored for the title, by the way.

“Runnin'” by Ashleigh Flynn

From a Million Stars.  I was thinking about Ashleigh Flynn this week.  When she was here in Nashville, she said Todd Snider’s “Play a Train Song” and Snider joined her on stage to sing a few lines.  This week, I got to see and hear Snider himself play that song on the very same (The 5 Spot) stage. Ashleigh Flynn is good, ya’ll.

“Six Feet Down” by Amelia White

Another from Home Sweet Hotel.  Such a great album – you really should check it out.

“Clarity” by Pony Girl

Pony Girl meet Pony Boy… Pony Boy meet Pony Girl.  If you guys ever put together a “Tale of Two Ponies” tour or split single – I hope E2TG gets a shout out… 🙂  Pony Girl are from Canada. The band’s new album is called Foreign Life.  Great stuff.  I just now noticed that Raphael Weinroth-Browne of The Visit (who we featured a while back) plays cello on this album. 

“April Fools” by Brian Wright

I promise this was not a plant! The shuffle brought this song up today of all days.  I think I’ve said enough times that Brian Wright is one of the best songwriters I know.  This is from the Café  Rooster Sessions Vol. 1.  Work is underway on Vol. 2, and I can’t wait. Brian Wright has been touring with Aaron Lee Tasjan and on his own, if he comes any where near you, do yourself a favor and go out and see him.

“Dancin’ Round The Nails” by The Jackals

We close out the week and the first shuffle of April with another track People by this outstanding Scottish band.  They will be playing later in April before a Manchester City football match sponsored by Blue Soap-Music  which is the source for a bunch of the great UK music that I feature here.

Also, expect more details about the forthcoming E2TG Five Year Anniversary Party (5/18 at The 5 Spot).  Just trying to lock down the final details.

Maybe, probably less soon, expect some information about the future of E2TG (it’s so bright, I have to wear shades – how is that for a relatively obscure – nearly 30 year old reference).

“Pinprick Eyes” by Ask for Joy

Ask for Joy is a Dream Pop/Shoegaze project of Aaron Rossetto of Austin, Texas. This song comes from the recently released New Private Window EP filled with forbidden pleasures. 

“Receiver” by Waco Brothers

The Waco Brothers new album Going Down in History is receiving widespread acclaim. Waco Brothers are fronted by Jon Langford from the legendary band, The Mekons. This is the first single from that album. If you want, you can check out this and some other Waco Brothers’ music on Noisetrade before you buy Going Down in History.  Really sorry I missed this band when they played Nashville late last year, but I am glad I saw Langford at The 5 Spot more recently.  Hope Waco Brothers come back here soon.

“Listening to Antique Pony Too Much” by Youngstrr Joey

As you can probably tell – if you stick around her long enough – I have a soft spot for the more experimental side of things sometimes. Youngstrr Joey from Glascow fits that bill pretty nicely.  It is experimental without being outrageously off-putting (at least for me).  Antique Pony is a Scottish band.  (I had to look that up, and now I have to check them out).

“The Fall” by The Hidden Agendas

Williamsport, PA is the hometown of Little League baseball, and the home base of The Hidden Agendas.  Glad to have them back in the shuffle.  When I’m not getting all experimental and weird, sometimes I just like some pretty straight ahead rock and roll – especially when it is done well. The band is hard at work on their new album.  Can’t wait to hear it.

“Seed” by Jonas Howden Sjøvaag’s Navyelectre

It seems like we have been featuring songs from Large Ensemble for a while, and we still have a couple more after this one.  I really dig this wonderful, original music from Norway.  Jonas Sjøvaag is a composer who has quite a bit of music out there. 

“Melissa” by Amelia White

Next up, a very beautiful love song from the  album Home Sweet Hotel, which is among my favorites of 2016 so far. 

“This Life… With You” by Hayes Carll and Supersuckers

Long running country/punk/rock band Supersuckers team with Texas singer-songwriter on this track from the Supersuckers’ most recent album, Holdin’ the Bag.  Yeah!  And yes, I freaking missed this at The Basement East Sunday… *shakes my head*

“Flood of Red” by Drew Worthley

Drew Worthley is a singer-songwriter the UK.  His new album is called Crucible.  This is a track from that album.  I really like this.

“Double Trouble” by Leapfrogtown

We have another track from Dreaming in Public the current album by this London based band.

Angela Burns is from Austin – she has some impressive film credentials.   This is her debut musical release – a mixtape called So That You Can Feel Better.  A very unique style.  I like this quite a bit.

Another great song from Never Did What I Should Have Done. Nellie came to Nashville from Oklahoma after a several year stop over in Alaska.  Great music from a really cool person.

Featured Friday Music Shuffle – Love Cures Mix

Last night was a wonderful reminder of the depth and width of the musical offerings that this city has to offer.  Not even to mention the several awesome shows that I was able to attend.  It began with week one of the Fats Kaplin and Friends. Kaplin is an incredible multi-instrumentalist who has worked with everyone from Jack White and Beck to Nanci Griffith and Trisha Yearwood.  He also has several solo albums and albums with his wife – the amazing vocalist Kristi Rose (who sang several songs last night). The show was filled with magic tricks, good humor, and fantastic music.  The residency will continue throughout March (with the exception of March 17), and I highly recommend it if you are in Nashville on one of those Thursdays.

You may recall, I posted several songs some time ago by Bashful Hips.  It is very original music (think alternative hip hop as a jumping off point).  Bashful Hips has a brand new CD called After I Died, I’ve Never Felt So Alive, and he celebrated the release with a diverse and spirited show at The End.  Experimental, progressive rock band Work opened the night, Ted C. Fox played next with a sound that pretty awesomely melded bluegrass with more experimental post-rock elements, Bashful Hips was next delivering his new album song by song. Backed by Nathan Conrad of Spoken Nerd on bass and spieling over a pre-recorded track, Bashful Hips songs are complex and emotional and awesome.  Expect to hear songs from the album in the shuffle soon.  Spoken Nerd closed the night. This is unabashedly hip-hop music  featuring a live band and pre-ordered music. I have a great respect for good hip-hop music – even if I admit to not knowing a lot about it.  This was really good and when joined by Nashville rapper KidDead, the rapid fire word play was impressive. 

It felt good to step out of my comfort zone (both location and musical styles), and I really had a blast.

“Delta Wave” by Mind the Journey

Mind the Journey is the project of Bostonian Spencer Sabo.  The new album was produced in Sabo’s basement and is called Color in the Gray Machine.  It is dreamy, heady stuff, and I dig it.  A cool way to begin the morning.

“I Shall Prevail” by Bob Margolin

Blues legend “Steady Rollin'” Bob Margolin is up next with another track from his album My Road.  This outstanding blues music without any unnecessary hyphens or frills.

“Love Cures” by Amelia White

We started the week with the title track from Amelia White’s Home Sweet Hotel album, and we wrap up the week with another track.  I have long said music heals, and I do believe love can cure.  Amelia White is a bright light in the East Nashville music community.

“City Lights” by All the King’s Men

All the King’s Men are a Manchester band who released their EP Making My Escape back in November.  This is classic sounding rock with a modern edge to it. This track was catchy and powerful, and a ton of fun.

“Like a Stone” by Andrew Adkins

One of my favorite Nashville songwriters (and “Earie” award winner) Andrew Adkins has been releasing music under a variety of band/project names. For his latest album, Glass Castles, he goes back to his own name and has a made an outstanding record.  The music here manages to defy expectations (even though the diversity of his recent projects have made it difficult to have expectations).  I am looking forward to next Wednesday’s  (March 9) show at The Country which will feature Adkins, his “Earie” co-winner Joe Nolan, Jon Byrd, Tim Carroll, and Tommy Womack in what promises to be a “not-to-be-missed” round.

“Eyes Awaken” by The Jackals

Another great track from People by Scottish cosmic rock and roll band, The Jackals. So good!

“95” by Gavin Chappell-Bates

And we close out with some pretty cool anthemic indie rock music from We Are Ones by UK singer-songwriter Gavin Chappell-Bates.  Chappell-Bates is highly influenced by Manic Street Preachers (and that is never a bad thing).  “95” looks back fondly on a simpler time, is filled with unbridled emotional honesty, and manages to navigate effectively away from nostalgia.  Expect to hear more from this album here…

Music City Monday Morning Shuffle – Rosebud, Too Mix

Quick recap, I continued to lay a little low – still dealing with a lingering cold, and working on song selection for the forthcoming “Double Shot with Joe and Sue” (still no confirmed start date).

Friday:  First, it was good to see a large and vibrant crowd for the weekly Tim Carroll Rock and Roll Happy Hour  (one of this town’s best weekly events in my opinion).  I left there a little early and headed to Bobby’s Idle Hour on Music Row for the Darkhorses of East Nashville – a collaborative round featuring the amazingly talented trio of Julie Christensen, Amelia White, and Sergio Webb.  Trading off songs and backing each other, produced several magical moments.  If they come through your town, do not miss it.

So, as I promised Friday, it seemed like a good time to shake things up here at E2TG – just a little bit.  Inspired by the success of Featured Friday, I have decided to have a “theme” playlist every for every day of the week.  The large #E2TG playlist had gotten very large and getting bigger. By having smaller playlist each day, it may provide more opportunities to feature different artists.  We shall see.

So, without much more ado, we begin this new chapter with the debut of Music City Monday – featuring music with connections to Nashville.  As you will see, this playlist features both current artists/albums and classics covering over half a century.  Non-Nashville artists: Do not be concerned, there will be many opportunities throughout the week for me to feature your music.

“The Homer Bellamy Centennial Blue Yodel” by Jesse and Noah&nbsp

Jesse and Noah Bellamy have roots in Florida and first made a name for themselves in Texas, but Nashville is happy to claim them now.  This song, from the album Driven Back, marks what would have been the 100th birthday of their Grandfather who solidified their love of Country and Western music.  The brother’s performed this long on the Grand Ole Opry.  A very Nashville way to introduce Music City Monday.

“Crazy Lady” by Paul Zografi

Our final featured song from Paul Zografi’s most recent EP – Brevity Lane.  Zografi is part of loosely organized group of artists that includes some of my favorite people.  His songs are very strong and extremely fun to hear.

“Follow Me Home” by SHEL

We started off this shuffle with brothers, and now we have a band of sisters.  SHEL (the name derives from the first letters of the first names of the 4 Holbrook sisters originally from Fort Collins, Colorado.  They divide time between their hometown, and Nashville (thus their qualification for this playlist).  They played an important (if coincidental) role in the genesis of this recent phase of my life as a music writer.  In May of 2014, on the day, I first met Darrin Bradbury in person, I followed him down to The 5 Spot – where Darrin was manning the merch table for Tim Easton during his residency.   SHEL performed as part of that show – which was also the first time I saw Aaron Lee Tasjan and Megan Palmer (who backed Easton).  Anyway, what is more important than my own experiences, is that SHEL are a really awesome band with a pretty cool sound. They are currently running a Pledgemusic presale for their new album Crazy Enough which is due out in May.  In support, they released a sampler on Noisetrade which includes a couple of tracks from the new album and some bonus songs which have appeared in television and film.  Including this one, which was featured on MTV’s Eye Candy.  SHEL will be down at Safety Harbor Song Fest in early April and are scheduled to play Nashville’s Earth Day concert in Centennial Park on April 23.

“Cut n Run” by Brandy Zdan 

Another Nashville transplant and another track from a Noisetrade sampler.  Brandy Zdan is getting some good and well deserved attention here in Nashville.  She is originally from Winnipeg, and here self-titled album was released in 2015.

“Chainsaw Dance” by Crazy Aces

A short fun track from Music City’s resident instrumental rock band.

“Home Sweet Hotel” by Amelia White

Fresh off Friday night’s show at Bobby’s Idle Hour, we have Amelia White with the title track from her brand new album.  Expect much more from this album. White is one of East Nashville’s best and this album is a true collaboration with several more awesome folks from both sides of the Cumberland River.

“Stubborn Lover” by Sugar and the Hi Lows

Nashville based duo Sugar and the Hi Lows are up next with a track from their 2012 self-titled album.  They were an E2TG featured artists when that album came out.

“Cattle Prod” (Guadalcanal Diary cover) by Government Cheese

Okay, so Government Cheese are technically a Bowling Green band, but Tommy Womack lives in Nashville, and they were a vital part of the Nashville music scene during their original run.  Furthermore, the video I found for this track was shot at the late, lamented venue, The Rutledge by the fabulous Too Much Country.  Oh, and the song was originally by Guadalcanal Diary who were also not a Nashville band (from Marietta, Georgia), but who played here often in the 80s and early 90s (I saw them several times).  Everything about this is awesome. From the retrospective, 1985-1995. They had me at Government Cheese covering Guadalcanal Diary.

“Nine Pound Hammer” by Johnny Cash with The Carter Family

I don’t think I need to explain Johnny Cash’s connection to Nashville.  This song was written by Merle Travis (and put too fine a point on my connection theme), this song was often used as Darrin Bradbury’s warm up song back in the heyday of the Darrin/Tim Carroll Fran’s Eastside era.

One of the outstanding things about Americana Fest is that it brings people from all over the world who are dedicated to making and appreciating the wildly diverse, enigma that is Americana Music.

Aussie songwriter/singer Imogen Clark came to town for Americana Fest last year, and she was invited back this year.  She is still in town and is putting on a release show for her EP Love and Lovely Lies at Twin Kegs II on Wednesday at 7:30.  Here is the link to the Facebook Event.

“Friendlies” by Tess Parks and Anton Newcombe

via Aquarium Drunkard.  Tess Parks is from Toronto and Anton Newcombe is the founder of the Brian Jonestown Massacre.  He currently lives in Berlin. The pair released an album entitled I Declare Nothing – back in June.  This is my first listen, and it was a great way to start my morning.

“Jennifer” by Tom Schreck

Schreck’s new EP Added Glory is in post-production or something like that.  Looking forward to it.  This is another one from Save Your Glory which I assume was a prequel to the new EP or vice-versa, or else they both just have Glory in the title… either way.  We have a video of Tom with a string section.  Not this song but you can get this song and the rest of Save Your Glory via bandcamp.

“Fake Roses” by The Lone Bellow

The Brooklyn based alt-country band headed up a long list of artists that I was not able to see at Americana Fest.  Don’t get me wrong, I do not regret anything I did see, but there was just way too much great music happening all at once, and just to be a little negative, I’ve decided to focus on the things I did not do and the artists I did not see.  It seems like a productive use of my time.  Anyway, I love this song.

“Meeting Across the River” by Bruce Springsteen

The song that leads into Jungleland on Born to Run. 

“The Mountain” by Angela Easterling

Another great track from Common Law Wife. So glad I got to see and meet Angela a few weeks back when she was in town.

“Indiana Rose” by Barna Howard

Yeah… another artist I missed at Americana.  Love this guys songs.  This is our second listen from his Quite Feelin’. Barna Howard is from Missouri.

“Ghetto” by Amelia White

I did see Amelia White perform – which is always a pleasure, but I also missed another performance – so in the spirit of negativity, I will focus on the show I missed. She has new album, Home Sweet Hotel in the can. This goes back to her last album, Old Postcards.  A gorgeous song with a video that features a bunch of people I know.

“Freak” by Mouth Reader

Some high energy fun from the Murfreesboro band off their Hands record. 

“Past Lives” by Real Estate

We close out the shuffle on a mellower note with a track from New Jersey band, Real Estate.  This song is off of their 2014 album Atlas.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Leather and Chrome Mix

Back at it after a long weekend…. some days, you just don’t feel it, but you press on and music always helps.

“Little World” by Gretchen Peters

A beautiful song from Peters’ 2012 album Hello Cruel World.  Her next album is due in February and is called Blackbirds.

“Don’t Say You Love Me” by Sean Watkins

From the latest solo record by a founding member of Nickel Creek. The album is called All I Do Is Lie, and it was recently made available on Noisetrade. I dig the well written songs played by top-notch musicians.

“Fisherman’s Blues” by The Waterboys

The lead and title track from one of my favorite albums.  At the time, Fisherman’s Blues was a radical departure from The Waterboys’ signature “Big Music” sound, and although I am huge fan of the early Waterboys’ records, I have always had a soft spot for Celtic Music and this is an album I find myself returning to again and again.

“Big Blue Sun” by Amelia White

Another great track from the Old Postcards album. This is always one of my favorites to hear Amelia perform live.

“Holy Moses” by Echo and The Bunnymen

I’ll be honest, I haven’t really kept up with Echo and the Bunnymen in recent years.  This track is off their latest album Meteorites which came out last year. A friend included on his annual mix CD.  I didn’t immediately recognize this has a Echo and the Bunnymen song, but taken out of context (for me), I have to say I like this song.

“1952 Vincent Black Lightning” by Richard Thompson

What exactly can I say. As I’ve stated before, Rumor and Sigh is a favorite of mine, and this song has gone on to become a modern folk music standard that will likely live on for years. I just don’t seem to get tired of hearing this song.

“Stones” by Dead and Lovely

Another great song from my friends in Dead and Lovely from their EP called Heavy.  I love this music.

“Johnny’s Gonna Die” by The Replacements

From Sorry Ma…. the song was written about Johnny Thunders…. but (and forgive me if I am stating the obvious), but this could easily be seen as prophetically about Bob Stinson.

“The Morning After the Coup” by Grant Peeples and the Peeples Republik

“Meet the New Boss…”  Coups are fun and all, but what comes next?  Another great song from Punishing the Myth.

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Talking inYour Sleep Mix

I had a technical glitch which prevented me from going back to review the songs in this morning’s shuffle, so I did the best I could from memory.  I realize that no one would know the difference, but I felt the need to be honest about that.  I think I came pretty close (possible some songs out of order)…

A lovely song from If You Look for My Heart with Rachel Yamagata.  By the way, the video is for a different song, but it is worth mentioning that the video was made by the multi-talented Matthew Hendershot of The End Men (who I may have mentioned once or twice on this blog).


“Wildfires” by Mariachi El Bronx

Mariachi El Bronx are not from The Bronx (in case that is what you are thinking), but they do play Mariachi music.  They also happen to have another band which is called The Bronx… They are from L.A. From their album, Mariachi El Bronx (III).


“Wa Wa Dance” by Tom Tom Club

Everybody’s doing a brand new dance now!  Wa Wa – from Boom Boom Chi Boom Boom.

from The Punch Line and Post Mersh Vol I.  The Minutemen pretty much are my desert island band, but I’m glad I don’t really have to choose just one band.

Our second song of the week that was featured on the show Sons of Anarchy.  I was fortunate enough to catch John Moreland on the opening night of his Campfire songs tour with Caleb Caudle and Aaron Lee Tasjan.  If you have the chance to see this three incredible songwriters together, make it happen! It is on the album Earthbound Blues.

This is one of the most amazing pieces of music I have heard in a long time. Voice and Cello with the energy of good punk music and the virtuosity of classical music. And even that doesn’t do this powerful piece of music justice.  Give it a listen and download and support this Toronto duo.

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Cobwebs and Twisted Dry Bones Mix

So… for those who love Halloween, you will notice the way I mashed up some song titles from today’s shuffle into a Halloweeny sounding  “Cobwebs and Twisted Dry Bones” subtitle for this shuffle.  For those who dislike Halloween, there are no real Halloween-themed songs in this shuffle.

Heath McNease sometimes does hip-hop, somethings does indie/folk, and somethings does what ever he wants… He does them all very well, and this acoustic arrangement from his Fort Wayne project (film/album) is a good example.

“Twisted Kinda” by Sidestreet Reny from Tonal Tonics and Musical Elixers  

Today we finish up the week with another superb track from this album by Sidestreet Reny.
