Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Gratitude Redux Mix

So it is good to pause now and again.

As a blog, we here at E2TG (meaning me) continue to be amazed and grateful for all the great people who have read and been a part of this extended experiment. I’m always grateful for the now accepted ubiquity of the term curate (which it seemed to me used to be reserved for museums and such). Now, whenever I don’t have much time to comment on the songs I present, and I begin to wonder exactly what it is useful that I am doing, I can just remind myself that I am curating this amazing collection of music, and that makes me feel very special indeed….. 😉

“Gone Away” by Umbrella Bed (from Refill EP.  Umbrella Bed are a two-toned ska band from Minneapolis which formed back in 1995. The band’s latest release Refill was issued on Mad Butcher Records and was released earlier this month.)

“We Belonged” by Stoney (from More Than Animals.  Another track from this album.)

“Train” by Uncle Tupelo (from No Depression. What can I say? I’m a sucker for train songs, and I freaking love everything about Uncle Tupelo.  I couldn’t find a video for this song so the video included below is for the band’s cover of the Iggy and the Stooges song, “I Wanna Be Your Dog”.)

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Pocket Change Mix

“Jamie” by Darrin Bradbury (from NEW!!!!The Almost Great Crepe’s (Demos).  Song was originally on a 2005 release called Darrin Bradbury. So digging this music. We have a different song in the video playlist and the original release in the Store. I’ll post the Bandcamp widget to the Demo release below)

“Ring True” by Let’s Active (from Cypress. I added the Cypress/Afoot combined CD into the playlist shortly after learning of the passing of founding member Faye Hunter.  It’s been so good revisiting these amazing songs. This is the last song to the featured here, and it’s a great one.)

“War” by Sam Morrow (from True North EP. A California singer/songwriter.  This ones been in the playlist for a while. I like this.)

“Pocket Change” by St. Paul and the Broken Bones (from Greetings From St. Paul and the Broken Bones. Sweet soulful music from Birmingham, Alabama.  The song seems to be called “Broken Bones and Pocket Change”, but it came across as “Pocket Change” on the version I downloaded from Noisetrade.)

“How to Cook a Wolf” by Lys Guillorn (from Winged Victory. Guillorn is part of the wild and wacky crew known as The Grimm Generation.  She also has a long running solo career. This is her second full length studio album – ten years after her self-titled debut.  This some amazing stuff, which I will be writing about quite a lot in the weeks to come. This is reminiscent of (but not derivative of) some of the great songs by The Velvet Underground.  Further proof, and Connecticut is a hotbed of awesome music.)

“Message in a Bottle” by Bhi Bhiman (from Substitute Preacher.  From an album of original takes on some extremely well known music.  Here Bhi takes on the classic song by The Police. This isn’t my favorite cover on this album, but it is highly original.  The album has some amazing covers including a killer version of the AC/DC song Highway to Hell. For reference, I included a few additional covers of the “Message in a Bottle” in the Video Playlist)

“Stubborn Axe Kid” by Black Doctor, Jr. (Single release – taken from the Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen Section 4 compilation.  Another great song from this incredibly wicked compilation.)

“Take it From Me” by Andrew Combs (from Worried Man. Taken from a 2012 American Sampler put out by the folks at Brite Revolution.  Combs is a major part of the new Nashville sound that features artist’s like Caitlin Rose, Steelism, Jason Isbell, Amanda Shires, Jonny Fritz, and so many more.  Dig on this song.)

“Corona” by Minutemen (from Double Nickels on the Dime.  A stand-out track from this classic album and at 2:25 one of the longer tracks on the album.)

“Speed of the Sound of Loneliness” by Alabama 3 (from Last Train to Mashville, Vol. 2.  A cover of a John Prine song.  One of two covers the UK band Alabama 3 has done of this song.  This is the more acoustic version of the song.  An earlier cover appeared on the band’s first album)

“Silver Tongue” by James and the Wild Spirit (from The Fires EP.  A nifty newish song from another band emerging from the burgeoning Nashville indie scene.)

“Heat Wave” by The All-About (from Suburban Heat.  The All-About appeared on that Mama Coco’s compilation previously mentioned.  After we featured their song, we got hold of the whole The All-About album and added that to our active playlist.  Interestingly, the song that came up first happens to be the song we’ve already featured.  Oh well… it’s a great song, and we look forward to featuring more from this Central New York band lead by Zac Coe.)

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Life’s a Gas Mix

“The Wylie Coyote Cliffs” and “Bob Newhart” by Darrin Bradbury (from NEW!!!!The Almost Great Crepe’s.  Man! What a great way to start the shuffle… a pair of truly great story-songs from new Nashville resident Darrin Bradbury.  I hope all my Nashville music friends will check out this music and support his music.  Nashville is a songwriting town, and there are tons of amazing songwriters here, but there is always room for more great ones, and Darrin Bradbury is a great one.)

“Fall Asleep” by Jars of Clay (Noisetrade Eastside Manor Session.  The song comes from the band’s twelfth studio album Inland. The Eastside Manor Session doesn’t seem to available, but the single version of this song is up now – with all donations going to support relief efforts in the Philippines )


“Fake Palindromes” by Andrew Bird (from Andrew Bird and the Mysterious Production of Eggs.  A delightful tune with really disturbing lyrics.)

“I Can’t Wait” by Star and Micey (from the I Can’t Wait EP.  A brilliant song by this brilliant band from Memphis.)

“Last Goodbye” by The Coal Men (from Escalator.  Another great song from this awesome album that I was introduced to during an amazing night of music at the 5 Spot back in September.)

“More the Man I Used to Be” by The Tremolo Beer Gut (from Nous Sommes The Tremolo Beer Gut…Qui Le Fuck Etes Vous.  Okay so how did I not know about this band?  I grabbed this off this month’s Feel Bad for You Mixtape.  Here’s some info (via Lastfm: “They love tremolo, they love beer and they’ve got guts! The Tremolo Beer Gut draws inspirations from the ultra cool rough twangy guitar sound of 50’es and 60’es surf as well as the great film music of Mancini, Barry and Moricone. TBG has made it their style to use the same cover-photo for all their releases, they just change the color and design a little bit. As they say: “You can’t improve on perfection – and by the way: when you’re drunk, it’s easier to remember the color of the sleeve than the name of the record!”

“Lost Innocent World” by Gogol Bordello (from Pura Vida Conspiracy.  Some awesomeness which this New York based Gypsy Punk artist.  We grabbed this off an ATO Records Sampler)

“Smile” by Andrew Ferris (from Yellow Lorry.  A great cheery Pop song.  You know… Pop is a good way.)

“Ooby Dooby” by Creedence Clearwater Revival (from Cosmo’s Factory. How ’bout this CCR cover of the Roy Orbison hit from their 1970 5th album)

“Judging You” by TimLee3 (from Devil’s Rope. Hell yeah! “Maybe I shouldn’t be judging you, but that don’t mean that it ain’t true.”)

“Goodbye Summer” by Jonny Fritz (from Dad Country. The artist formerly known as Jonny Corndawg. Oh man I love this song.  In 2012 while still billed as Jonny Corndawg, Fritz recorded an solo, a cappella song from inside a drainage pipe for Couch by Couchwest. His 2013 submission – as Jonny Fritz – was from Andrew Combs’ kitchen floor. Yeah, he’s that cool.)

“That’s What I Want for Christmas” by Annie Sellick (from Let’s Make a Christmas Memory. Another track from this album. This song – a cover of a jazz ballad features noted Nashville jazz pianist Joe Davidian).

“Loose Kites in Harbor” by Skeletons in the Piano (from Please Don’t Die.  Our 2012 Reader’s Poll – Band of the Year – upstate New Yorkers SITP released one of our favorite albums of the year back in April or so.  Today also happens to the birthday of SITP dancer Katarra Peterson – so Happy Birthday Katarra!)

Let’s jump straight into the Shuffle….

“Talkin’ World War III Blues” by Billy Bragg (from The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan: A Folk Tribute. A great way to start today’s shuffle.  Taken from a song by song cover of Dylan’s landmark second album – a Woody Guthrie-style talking blues song covered up just right by one of the voices of my generation, Billy Bragg)

“Bring a Torch Jeanette Isabell” by Annie Sellick (from Let’s Make a Christmas Memory. Annie Sellick is an acclaimed and accomplished jazz vocalist from Nashville.  This is her first Christmas album, and this song happens to be lead track.  It’s a glorious and beautiful take on a French carol which includes the backing of a full orchestra. The album is due out on November 28, and Sellick will have a release performance on December 5 with the Nashville Jazz Orchestra. I usually don’t listen to Christmas music until after Thanksgiving, but I wanted to introduce this one to you. I have at least one other new Christmas album which I hope to be featuring before the holidays are over.)

“The Murder Mystery” by The Velvet Underground (from The Velvet Underground.  The eponymously titled third album by New York band The Velvet Underground was also the first without founding member John Cale. The Murder Mystery stands alone on this album (which is filled with more straight forward sounds) with it’s overlapping spoken-words and the haunting counter-point vocals.)

“I’d Rather Be High” by David Bowie (from The Next Day.  When this year began, it was pretty widely accepted that David Bowie was all but retired from music. As it turned out, Bowie still had a few musical tricks up his metaphorical sleeve and released his twenty-fourth studio album in early March. The album has received generally positive reviews with some calling it his best work since Scary Monsters released over twenty years prior.  We dig deeper into this album with the 8th track.)

“Riptide” by Vance Joy (from God Loves You When You’re Dancing.  A pretty nifty folk/pop song getting some significant buzz from the people who buzz about such things.  Vance will be touring with Young the Giant next year including a stop in Nashville at the Ryman in March.)

“Tennessee Blues” by The Howlin’ Brothers (from The Sun Studio Session.  I think at this point I’ve featured this whole record. The video playlist for today includes a live video from the Sun Studio Session. A PBS show is scheduled for early next year, and February 4 is the target date for the next full-length The Howlin’ Brothers record.  As this song played this morning, I was driving just north of downtown Nashville, and it was a crisp, clear Fall day, and this song was just about the perfect accompaniment.)

“Smug” by Grounded (from their new untitled album.  Nice way to close out the Shuffle with an extended – 7 plus minute jam from this young band from Florida.)

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Reflections Mix

A lot of ground to cover….  as promised, I added a virtual ton of music to the playlist – 196 songs in all bringing the total before today’s post of 471 songs – which I think is a record.

First off – you have to understand that Lou Reed tributes are not going to stop anytime soon.  His death seemed to affect people who make and listen to all kinds of music.  Today, we have a very special video offered as a tribute to Mr. Reed.  It’s a cover of the Velvet Underground classic (aren’t they all?) and one of my favorites (I know I say this about quite a few VU and Reed songs – but really I mean it) – “I’ll Be Your Mirror” here performed by Richard Barone with the amazing Jane Scarpantoni on Cello from the 25th  Anniversary concert for one of the most lovely records ever made (Cool Blue Halo).  Richard Barone (Bongos) is offering up the song as a tribute to his late friend and influence.

“Love You Strongly” by Amy Stroup (from The Other Side of Love – Session Two.)

“Wilbur Mountain (2012)” by Darrin Bradbury (from NEW!!!!The Almost Great Crepe’s (Demos). Darrin Bradbury was in Big Wilson River who we have featured before. Word has it he has upped and relocated from New Jersey to Nashville.  Nashville take notice!  I love the spoken/story/song featured here.  It makes me think of Gary Larson (The Far Side) meeting Larry McMurtry kind of… and in case you don’t know that would be a damn fine thing indeed.)

 
 
“Break it Up” by Grounded (from an untitled album released 10/31/2013.  Careful and dedicated listeners may remember that E2TG featured the young Florida band Grounded sometime last year. Well, they are back with some new music, and it’s a good reminder of why I was so impressed by this band.)
  

“Pawnshops” by Todd Farrell Jr. and the Dirty Birds (from All Our Heroes Live in Vans.  Todd Farrell is one of the brightest lights in a stunning bright Nashville music scene. Flat out great song here. This one also came out on Halloween.)

“Femme Fatale” by Big Star (from Third/Sister Lovers.  What more can be said an iconic band, doing a cover of an iconic song. It’s from the equally iconic Third album by Big Star from Memphis.  Do I need to say that it’s a Velvet Underground cover.)
 
“Cohesion” and “Please Don’t Be Gentle with Me” by Minutemen (from Double Nickels on the Dime.  Back to back songs from the Post-Punk masterpiece. A study in contrast)
 
“All Dolled Up” by Penicillin Baby (from Jams: Volume III. More Psyched out ear candy from this amazing Nashville band – via Jeffery Drag Records)
 
 
“God Bows to Math” by Minutemen (from Double Nickels on the Dime.  And a third song from this album for good measure. ’cause why the hell not?)
 
“Real Child of Hell” by X (from Under the Big Black Sun. From the LA punk band’s third album and major label debut.  Ray Manzarek back behind the boards for the third time)
 
“To Be Someone (Didn’t We Have a Nice Time)” by The Jam (from All Mod Cons. This is the modern world.)
 
“Beware of a Dog” by EdTang (from Goodbye, Zen5, Sushi Dinner.  Another great song from this Asbury Park band.  We’ve been digging this album for a while.)

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Return of the Living Dead Mix



Well… after a week long bout with the flu, I can safely say that I am back from the grave and ready to party!




Hall of Fame update – 1. I at least have a template for the Hall of Fame page entries.  I was beginning to work more on the page when I fell ill.  – doesn’t “fell ill” sound so sophisticated?  Let me tell you – the reality was pretty awful. 2. I came up with a list of notable omissions from my initial class of twenty – some of these were due to being first mentioned in the pre-blogger days, some due to alternate spellings affecting the tag count.  In any event, I will be adding those names soon.

p.s. I have a literal ton of songs waiting to be added to the active playlist.*

*confession: I have no clue how much a song weighs so I can’t truly say that I literally have a ton of songs to add… but it’s a bunch.

“State of the Art (A.E.I.O.U.)” by Jim James (from his February 2013 solo album, Regions of Light and Sound of God.  Jim James of My Morning Jacket is truly one of the most amazing artists of our time.)

“Slow and Low” by Beastie Boys (from Licensed to Ill.  I think this is the last song for us to feature from this landmark album. “That is the tempo”)

“Ella Guru” by XTC (from Fast ‘n’ Bulbous: a Tribute to Captain Beefheart.  Andy Partridge and company covering Captain Beefheart! What could possibly go wrong?  Answer: Not a damned thing!)

“Pale Blue Eyes” by The Velvet Underground (from The Velvet Underground.  You may recall that I began surveying this classic album before Lou Reed passed away.  Pale Blue Eyes is truly one of the most beautiful songs, and it is one of my favorites among a stellar list of amazing VU songs.)

“Goddamn Lonely Love” by Joseph Mooradian (via Soundcloud.  A cover of a Drive by Truckers song which ex-DBT Jason Isbell released on his Live from Alabama album. I really dig this version by the talented Mr. Mooradian.)



“Officer” by Saint Rich (from Beyond the Drone. A newish band formed by Delicate Steve main guy Steve Marion who plays drums here joined by Delicate Steve touring guitarist Christian Peslak.  This was one of the free tracks from Amazon at some point, and I honestly didn’t know anything about the band until this morning.  I really dig this song though.)

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Superstar Mix

We’ve reached the end of the week.  To get us into the weekend, I have a long list of additions to the E2TG Hall of Fall, and a pretty sweet little music shuffle.

E2TG Hall of Fame:
