Tuesday Afternoon Music Shuffle – Faraway Beach Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); window.amznpubstudioTag = “eartothegro00-20”; http://ps-us.amazon-adsystem.com/domains/eartothegro00-20_3dcd3a52-1a1a-4afe-a2fd-aaba8e251afc.js

Weird morning, got stuck in traffic so my Morning Shuffle would have been about 24 songs.  So, I did an afternoon shuffle instead.  The morning shuffle would have been epic, but I don’t have time or energy to do it justice.

Here we go….

“Until Then” by The Grimm Generation from The Big Fame

Connecticut E2TG Faves – The Big Fame – a great record.  Video of a newer song about a political family from Massachusetts.  Two states that I always had trouble spelling.

“It” by Prince from Sign O’ The Times

Another thrift store find from this weekend.  Prince.  Prince has pretty much cleared YouTube of his music, so all we have is a cover of this song.  The little bit I listened to sounded pretty good. If you listen to it all and disagree – leave a comment.  I rarely get comments directly on the blog. I like comments.  “If…” is a movie directed my Lindsay Anderson and starring Malcolm McDowell that was released in 1968.  That movie and this song are not related as far as I know – in fact they have different but titles, but I just thought I would mention the 1968 movie to impress you with my knowledge of 1960s British Cinema.

“Evil Girls” by Escondido from Deer Head Music Presents: Indie Mixtape Nashville/The Ghost of Escondido

From a recent mixtape featuring Indie Music from Nashville – available for a limited time on NoiseTrade,  It can be assumed then, that Escondido are an Indie band from Nashville, but assuming makes an ass of u and me, so I visited the band’s Facebook page.  They are indeed from Nashville (which I knew), and although they do not use the term “indie” on their bio (unless I missed), I am going to go out on a limb and risk being an ass and make the assumption.  Regardless of all that, this is a bitching tune, and I recommend looking into them further – as will I.

“Every Little Bit” by Heather Powell from Believe it to Life

Heather Powell is part of the True Groove record label out of New York.  Her music always brings a sense of class and sophistication to the shuffle.  If you are in the New York area and get a chance to check out any of the True Groove artists – do so!

“Hymn for the Road (Walmart Dirge)” by Darrin Bradbury from Death in my Left Ear

You might expect me to make some crack about class and sophistication as a transition from the Heather Powell song to Darrin Bradbury, but I’m not going to do it.  The past few months have been an extremely unusual, difficult, and amazing chapter in my life, and I count myself fortunate that my friendship with Darrin Bradbury has been a big part of this.  Besides, we don’t have enough dirges anymore – let alone Walmart Dirges…

“On Some Faraway Beach” by Arturo Stalteri from coolAugustMoon – From the Music of Brian Eno

Arturo Stalteri is a Post Minimalismo romantico from Rome, Italy.  This is a lovely rendition of a Brian Eno composition.

“Stare at the Sun” by Eleanor Friedberger from Merge Records Summer Sampler 2013/Personal Record

1/2 of the duo The Fiery Furnaces – a lovely song from her 2013 solo album.  DIsclaimer: Ear to the Ground does not recommend staring into the sun without proper equipment, and even then only under the direct supervision of an experienced sun starer.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle -Saints and Monks Mix

“Nikola Tesla perceived the earth to be a conductor of acoustical resonance.”Jack White from Coffee and Cigarettes a film by Jim Jarmusch

Watched two Jarmusch films this weekend plus  made some good progress on my novel-in-progress.

We have a nifty shuffle for your Monday!

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); “Aunt Lou” by Grant Peeples and the Peeples Republik from Punishing the Myth

Grant Peeples tells the truth in amazing songs and poems.  If you’re not familiar with his work – get familiar.

“She Gives Me Joy” by Pork Chop Willie from Love is the Devil

A daily dose of Hill Country Blues is an excellent prescription for the low-down, real-life blues.  Joyful blues?

“St. Joan (Of Rt 495)” by The Jason Drug Reaction from Down on the Pharmacy

Time travelling rock and rollers from the early 21st century – rolling down a lonely stretch of Connecticut highway… our friend Jason from The Grimm Generation.  By the way, if you search for The Jason Drug Reaction on YouTube, you discover a whole genre of videos made by parents of their children under the influence of powerful anesthetics.

“Bring Me My Queen” by Abigail Washburn from City of Refuge

An excellent thrift store find this weekend. This is from her 2011 album.

“All is Silent” (2005) by Darrin Bradbury from The Almost Great Crepes (Demos)

We go WAY back (nine years) for this one.

“Sitting Here Without You” by Sturgill Simpson from 2014-05-13 – Grimey’s Records – Nashville/High Top Mountain

Another from this live recording of a show I really wish I had been able to attend.

“The Troubles” by U2 from Songs of Innocence

Look, I realize that U2 are a very polarizing band.  People either love them or hate them.  Honestly, for me, since Achtung Baby! – with the exception of a few songs, I just haven’t been very interested in U2.  I must say, though, hearing this song in the context of the shuffle and taking out all of the hype… I really enjoyed hearing this song this morning.

“TOC” by Fuzzer from Reberto

We first connected with Facundo Pichetto from Buenos Aires with his band Shake Jack who offered up a nifty modern surfer rock sound.  He is back with a new band that cranks up the lo-fi fuzz to eleven.  This new album features some new versions of some Shake Jack songs we loved as well as some new material.  I really dig this music, so check it out!

“I am a Pilgrim” (2009) by Darrin Bradbury from The Almost Great Crepes (Demos)

It’s old Darrin Bradbury song day at #E2TG.  If you’re in Nashville come out to The Building tonight and hear some newer Darrin Bradbury songs along with a couple of other great East Nashville songwriters: Zachariah Red and Lindsay Ellyn.  It is the E2TG Pick Event of the Day.  (Disclaimer: Technically, we don’t have a feature called E2TG Pick Event of the Day, but if we did this would totally be it!)

“Monk Time” by The Monks from Black Monk Time

Now this is an interesting story.  Mid-sixties: a group of American GIs stationed in Germany form band and this amazing glorious noise that sounds a lot like punk rock. It’s Monk time!

“Mourning the Missionaries” by Minton Sparks from Middlin’ Sisters

I had really good luck at the thrift store Saturday.  Minton Sparks is a storyteller in the truest sense of that word, and Nashville is lucky to be able to claim her as our own.  More to come.

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Atomic Love Mix

And we put another week of shuffles into the books… There is a lot of life out there, go and get you some… life that is…

“Feel This to Survive” by Left of Logic from In Formation

We begin with our final track from Left of Logic’s album In Formation. It appears  that Left of Logic have played their final show, but they left behind some cool music

“Rosalie” by Pork Chop Willie from Love is the Devil

From the North Mississippi Hill Country by way of the borough of Brooklyn (or is it the other way around?).  This is the stuff!

“The Miracle (of Joey Ramone)” by U2 from Songs of Innocence

I hear a heart-felt tribute to an idol/friend, and a pretty decent song.  Do I hear much Ramones? No, I don’t, and I guess that’s okay.

“It’s On” by BRONCHO from An Introduction to BRONCHO/Just Enough Hip to be Woman

The latest album from Oklahoma-based BRONCHO dropped about ten days ago.  Fun, rocking music that sounds modern and not modern. I dig.

“A Life of Sin” by Sturgill Simpson from 2014-05-13 – Grimey’s Records – Nashville/Metamodern Sounds in Country Music

Yes, Sturgill Simpson is the real deal, and he is getting some well-deserved attention.  If you feel a need to modify/specify the Country label (i.e. Alt-Country, Americana-Country whatever), then you obviously don’t understand what Country is supposed to be.

“Talk Trauma” by NoPop from Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen: Section 5/See Pretty

The Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen well seems bottomless sometimes – We’ve been shuffling through the latest compilation for some time, and the great music and great bands just keep on coming.  NoPop is the latest, and they offer up some punkish, no-wave pop music.  Oh and their bio lists the Minutemen and the Birthday Party as influences!

“Alcohol” by The Kinks from Celluloid Heroes/Muswell Hillbillies

That old demon…

“Julius and Ethel (Atomic Love Song)” by Darrin Bradbury from new unreleased album

Darrin Bradbury sings important songs about roadkill, Daffy Duck, and Superman… and now Julius and Ethel Rosenberg.  Watch for this and other new songs coming soon, or see him live and request this one – it will make you look hip.

“Love U Forever” by Jenny Lewis from The Voyager

Jenny Lewis was in Rilo Kiley.  If I needed proof of her awesomeness, I need only look at the list of my friends who like her Facebook page.  Or, better yet, I could just listen to her music, and leave all doubt in the dust.  Her latest album dropped in July, and she is coming to Nashville in November.

“Long White Line” by Sturgill Simpson from 2014-05-13 – Grimey’s Records – Nashville/Metamodern Sounds in Country Music

Let us close the door on this week in musical mischief with a second song taken from this recording made at Nashville’s landmark record establishment. Let’s get Metamodern – ya’ll.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Don’t be Koi Mix

All I can say is that life is probable sometimes, and although we don’t always choose the things that happen (or maybe in some ways we do), what we do choose is whether or not to be fully present in those moments (to the best of our ability).

“Seven Sons” by Tomas Doncker from Power of the Trinity

We finish off our presentation of Tomas Doncker’s Ethiopian inspired album with a track that truly grooves… see what I did there?

“This is Where You Can Reach Me Now” by U2 from Songs of Innocence

How did this end up on my phone?  How many times can I make the same joke that wasn’t altogether funny the first time?  I really don’t hate this music, I just don’t find it especially significant.  Then again how many bands that have been together with the same line-up for over thirty years are still making significant new music?  How many bands can you think of who have been together 30 plus years period?

“Freight Train” (live) by Humming House from Humming House Party!

When Humming House throw a party, it seems safe to assume that dancing will be involved.  Plus, I’m a total sucker for songs about trains.  Woo Woo!

“Super 8” by Jason Isbell from Southeastern

I was fortunate enough to see Jason Isbell and his incredible band in the parking lot of Grimey’s a few years ago – just before things really took off for him.  This year, he swept up a bunch of awards at the AMA’s, and they were well-deserved in my opinion.  Southeastern is a great album, and this song is an almost instant classic.

“Runnin’ Away” by Heather Powell from Believe It to Life

It’s been great having Heather Powell in the shuffle several times recently, and she is working on/about to release the follow-up to this album.  Awesome soulful pop vocals!

“Snake Drive” by Pork Chop Willie from Love is the Devil

“Love is the Devil, but it won’t get me.”  And I guess that’s why they call it the blues….

“Tomorrow” (acoustic) by Madi Diaz from Stripped Chopped + Screwed/Phantom

An acoustic version of a song from the new album by the Indie/Pop singer.

“I Wrote This Song for You” by Chris Stamey from Lovesick Blues

A song about a song…  I really dig this whole album.

“Fish Joke” (2011 Live) by Darrin Bradbury from The Almost Great Crepes (Demos)!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);

“If it’s all right with you, I gonna start this one out with a fish joke.”  Darrin Bradbury is not a comedy writer.  Get that straight right now!

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Silly Boys Mix

We have a bunch of cool songs by some silly boys and one not so silly, but very talented woman.  Let’s go!

“Falling” by Pork Chop Willie from Love is the Devil

Another great track from the album which came out earlier this year.  You need to hear this.

“Silly Boys” by Holy Modal Rounders from Last Round

How about this?  New York psychedelic folk duo – who have collaborated with Sam Shepard among others.  This song is from their 1978 album.

“Head” by The Orwells from Other Voices EP

Think Rock and Roll is dead?  Have you not heard The Orwells?

“Medicine Springs” (Stanley Brother Cover) by Sturgill Simpson from 2014-05-13 – Grimey’s Records – Nashville, TN

Think Country music sucks? Have you not heard Sturgill Simpson?

“Who Woulda Thunk It?” (Greg Brown Cover) by Grant Peeples and the Peeples Republik from Punishing the Myth

One of my highlights of AMA week was being introduced to the music of and meeting Grant Peeples.  This is the only cover on his incredible album – of which you will be hearing lots more – and it’s a good one.  I never complain about a cover song when it is a Greg Brown song being covered.

“А где мне взять такую песню” by Orera from 1970

Ya’ll I seriously love this music – more from this amazing Georgian folk/jazz group who recorded back in the 1970s or so.

“White Gardenias” by Justin Townes Earle from NoiseTrade Eastside Manor Session/Single Mothers

Okay it got cropped out of the picture, but it is the time, I shared the front page of No Depression with Justin Townes Earle. This is a song from his brand new album recorded in a special session for NoiseTrade at Eastside Manor.  Trivia: The photo of the cover of his new album was taken at a Nashville park commonly known as Dragon Park.  This park was also featured in the album art of one of R.E.M.’s albums.

“Blue Light of the Fire” by Heather Powell from Believe it to Life

Heather Powell has an amazing voice, and it is always good to have her in the shuffle.

“Don’t Think About Her When You’re Trying to Drive” by Little Village from Little Village

Good advice from the Little Village

“Following the Plan” by bellwire from Following the Plan

This seems to be the latest song from New Hampshire based bellwire.  It’s a cool powerpop song. If you aren’t hip to these guys – definitely check them out.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – High Hopes Mix

FALL IS HERE!  Not only that, there was an honest to goodness chill in the air this morning.  Now, I’ve lived in Tennessee my whole like, so I know that we still have a few more rounds of heat to go, but today it is officially Autumn, and it feels like it so…

MUSIC

“Gypsy Django” (live) by Humming House from Humming House Party!

Fall is my favorite season, so let’s party! How about a Humming House Party!  This song is guaranteed to lift your spirits.

“High Hopes” by Bruce Springsteen from High Hopes

The shuffle does it again.  Today is Bruce Springsteen turns 65 today.  I didn’t even know this until later, but the shuffle knows all!  And, this was the only Springsteen song currently in my active playlist, oh and the High Hopes album was released on my birthday back in January… so yeah… viva la coincidence… or something.

“Страна цветов”   by Orera from Orera 1970

I know some (or all) of you think I’m just being goofy when I add some of the obscure musical selections to the shuffle, but as is often the case, there is some amazing music that I have never heard, and I suspect many of you have never heard.  Hat tip to my friends from Canada, Valued Customer, for turning me on to this amazing folk/jazz from Georgia (and as you can tell from the song title, I don’t mean the Georgia just south of Tennessee).

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); window.amznpubstudioTag = “eartothegro00-20”; http://ps-us.amazon-adsystem.com/domains/eartothegro00-20_3dcd3a52-1a1a-4afe-a2fd-aaba8e251afc.js “Sleepwalker Blues” by Joe Sundell from The Hat Thief

Another incredible song from Joe Sundell.  Go check out The Hat Thief, and get that thing. It is totally worth it.

“Waffle House” (Take 2) by Darrin Bradbury from new unreleased

Just like U2, new Darrin Bradbury music showed up seemingly magically on my phone yesterday.  This song is battered, spattered, scrambled, and it may not be good for you, but it’s oh so good.  It’s not widely available yet, but so to your phone/computer settings, go to MUSIC, go to ALLOW Darrin Bradbury, and then wait.  Be patient.

“The Big Fame” by The Grimm Generation from The Big Fame

Somehow, in ripping this off the CD, this track ended up being labeled as “Audio Track 13”.  By any other name, this is cool music, by some cool folks.

“Кавказские напевы”  by Orera from Orera 1970

Georgia on my mind…. believe it or not, I found of a video of this exact song.  I ran this through Google translate, and if this is Russian, the translation that came out was “caucasian tunes”.  Take that how you will, and keep in mind, it is Google Translate…

“The Second Renaissance (Part I and II)” by The Danbury Lie from Fourth Time’s a Charm

We’ve successfully, navigated our way backwards through the trilogy of The Second Renaissance, and we conclude/begin this journey with some of the awesome folk/prog metal/alternative music we’ve come to know and love from The Danbury Lie.

“I Am the Mississippi” by Joseph Arthur from Redemption City

We complete our presentation of songs from Redemption City by Joseph Arthur with this song/story about the might Mississippi. In the late 80s, I lived for a time in Memphis just a few blocks away from the Mississippi River, and I came (in that short time) to understand and appreciate the romantic allure of that might body of water which served for so long as a borderline between the civilized east and the savage west.  Whether it was a solitary stroll or sitting in a crowd listening to the 1812 Overture and Old Man River or even having my ass pinched by some by at a party on Mud Island, the River still has stories to tell….

“The Great Unknown” by Dar Williams from The Honesty Room

We close things out with this song about a cold war era nuclear family…

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Fight the World Mix

So, Americana Music Fest week is over, and Nashville can go back to being this cool city with live music happening every single night all over town….  Even with being an official attendee at AMA, I managed to see some amazing music, saw a bunch of old friends, made some new friends, and discovered some new music which will be showing up on E2TG soon…

The End Men @ The Basement 9/21/2014

More pics and commentary coming up.

Let’s shuffle…

“Ratking” by The End Men from Odds and Ends

Look, I really swear – the shuffle function picks the songs! Really!  But… but! How appropriate to start things off with The End Men who made a rare Nashville appearance, shook up The Basement, and helped to wrap up AMA Week as part of a Post-Americana fest all-day show.  Also, today is Livia Ranalli’s birthday – so please wish this amazing drummer an awesome day!

“I’d Fight the World” by Jim Reeves from Gentleman Jim

In honor of Matthew Hendershot’s nervousness about the significant lack of Twang in The End Men’s sound compared to most of the other awesome acts on the bill (hint: nobody cared), I thought we would follow up The End Men with Country Music legend, Gentlemen Jim Reeves. (Except, I didn’t decide – see it really is the shuffle function).

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); window.amznpubstudioTag = “eartothegro00-20”; http://ps-us.amazon-adsystem.com/domains/eartothegro00-20_3dcd3a52-1a1a-4afe-a2fd-aaba8e251afc.js “When Sal’s Burned Down” by Dar Williams from The Honesty Room

Moving on with this great song from Dar Williams.  The video is a fan-made mash-up of the audio of the song with scenes from the Japanese anime series Cowboy Bebop. Please don’t ask me…

“Crawdad Song” by Pork Chop Willie from Love is the Devil

Pork Chop Willie doing the American standard.  Our video playlist features another Pork Chop Willie performance plus a version of this song by Woody Guthrie.

“Someone to Love” by The Dirty Guv’nahs from Hearts on Fire

“Slow Down Easy” by The Dirty Guv’nahs from Hearts on Fire

Two in a row from this enthusiastically awesome Knoxville band.

“All She Wrote” by Deena from Rock River

Another great track from the most recent album by the former The Cucumbers member.

“Promised Land” by The Style Council from The Singular Adventures of The Style Council/Non-Album Single

A late period The Style Council single.

“Blind Melon Morpheus (missed the train)” by Tomas Doncker Band from Moanin’ at Midnight: The Howlin’ Wolf Project

And, we close things out with the one and only Tomas Doncker and his band from the stunning Howlin’ Wolf tribute album.  Tomas is wrapping up work on his follow-up which is going to be ground-breaking and freaking awesome.

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Addicted to War Mix

Last night was so much fun…  Went to the Rocking Roots Guitar Showcase at The 5 Spot.  Four trios lead by incredible guitarists.  Nick Kane, Richie Owens with the Farm Bureau, Ted Drozdowski with his Scissormen, and Mark Robinson.  Great players with distinct and unique styles falling into the blues/roots area if labels mean much.  All of them were mind-blowingly awesome in very different ways.

Ted Drozdowski getting up close and personal at The 5 Spot

After that showcase, I stuck around to see a long-time favorite of Ear to  the Ground, Pony Boy.  She was a Featured Artist in August 2012, and since then she has spent some time in Nashville, had a song featured on the ABC show named after our fair city, and last night she played a bunch of Nashville’s hottest players.  The qualities which first lead me to her music were all present – an amazing voice, great songs (the originals and covers), and a great stage presence.  It was good to finally meet her.

Let’s jump into the shuffle:

“Devil in my Soul” by Pork Chop Willie from Love is the Devil

I got to spend part of the evening talking to Sue Havlish who sent me this record early this year.  It is North Mississippi Hill Country Blues meets Brooklyn – it somehow walks a great line between traditional and modern.  Hell, it’s a great blues record.

“Libertango” by Clocks and Clouds from The Creation of Matter

Alternative rock and classical music meld perfectly here.  It’s silly, but for some reason, what came to my mind this morning was “Football Fugue” from Pete Townsend’s Another Scoop album.

“Caves” by Brown Bird from Fits of Reason

There is a persistence to this song that I really like… repetition with progression…

“War” by The End Men from Odds and Ends

The End Men joined by Dion Freewheelin Troubadour Power from London.  A song which unfortunately seems more and more timely every day.  Sunday Night!  Did you hear me? Sunday Night – The End Men – reigning E2TG Band of the Year, and all around awesome people will be melting faces at The Basement under Grimey’s.  There will be music there from 1pm until… come early, come often, but come on down around 9 or so to have your faces melted.  Seriously come!  There is a great line-up including Tim Easton, Blackfoot Gypsies, and Bebe Buell.  $2 draft pints.

“Twin Void” by The Grey A from My Country

I can’t believe it’s been a week… Was so glad to see the Nashville CD Release show for this album.  This song, lyrically, is one of my favorites.  And! We have now have a video for “My Country Song”.  If you are in D.C. and reading this, the band is playing their hometown CD Release show tonight at Comet Ping Pong.  The Grey A is also the newly elected Band of the Month from Washington Deli Magazine.

“Time is Not Your Own” by Solomon Grundy from Solomon Grundy

This one is from the August Feel Bad for You mixtape via the awesome Too Much Country from here in Nashville.  Solomon Grundy were a hard rock/psychedelic band from Washington state featuring Van Conner who was a co-founder of the legendary Screaming Trees.

“Somebody Love Those Girls” by Lindsay Ellyn from Shores EP

I was fortunate enough to hear Lindsay Ellyn sing with Darrin Bradbury at Fran’s this week.  She has an amazing voice.  Glad to have this wonderful song in today’s shuffle.

“Da Doo Ron Ron/I Wanna Be Sedated” by The Dollyrots from Barefoot and Pregnant

This incredible mash-up was included as a pre-order bonus track on the fifth and most recent album by The Dollyrots.  The Crystals meet The Ramones…. lots of fun.

“Addiction” by The Foresters from Living Hold!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);

This week marked the fourth anniversary of the brothers’ Nork buying their first instruments. They have come a long way in four years, and as proof – I offer this song from their latest album Living Hold.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Gallatin Pike Mule Mix

It is axiomatic that on any given night, if you go hear live music in Nashville – no matter how epically awesome your experience – there is something equally epic and awesome going on either next door or across town.  This is even more true – if something axiomatic can be “more” true during Americana Fest week which is going on now.   I just added a corollary to this axiom (Can an axiom have a corollary?  Can it have a coronary?), which states that if you hang out in the same smoky dive bar in East Nashville long enough you will hear “Freebird” accompanied by a trombone and it will be amazing.

Tonight – E2TG favorite Mark Robinson joins an amazing line-up of Rocking Roots Guitarists at The Five Spot from 5-8pm.  At 8:00 – another E2TG favorite – Pony Boy will be leading off a Five Spot Favorites show at that same location.  And it goes on…

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); “Another One” by The Features from Old Familiar Melodies – 2008-2013/Wilderness

Another cool song from Nashville’s The Features.

“After the Hurricane” by Tim Carroll from Opening Up/Not For Sale

One of my favorite Tim Carroll songs.  I can neither confirm or deny that Tim may or may not have been involved in the formation of my corollary mentioned above…

“Cold Chicago” by Humming House from Humming House Party!

More Nashville and a prime example of the original axiom – just last night.  A fun song from a fun album recorded live in East Nashville.

“I Refuse to Lose” by Jarekus Singleton from Alligator Records: 21st Century Blues and Roots/Refuse to Lose

Some great 21st Century Blues.  And there is even a Nashville connection – as I got an e-mail just 2 days ago that Jarekus Singleton will be playing in Nashville in about a week.

“Gallatin Pike Blues” by Tim Easton from Not Cool

I got to see Tim Easton do this song with the amazing Megan Palmer at The Building this week.  Another cool slice of Nashville and a tribute to the late John Hartford.

“Mule” by Francie Moon and the Great Outdoors  from Francie Moon and the Great Outdoors

I saw Francie Moon do this song in East Nashville a month or so ago. It was awesome.

“Lonesome Poor” by Pork Chop Willie from Love is the Devil

This is one of my favorite albums of 2014.  I had some technical difficulties that kept this out of my shuffle for a while, but it has been resolved.  This album was passed along to me by Sue Havlish who I hope to see tonight at The Five Spot.

“Here Comes Love” by The California Honeydrops from Like You Mean It

I have no Nashville connection – I hate when I write myself into a corner like this…. ah heck man, this is a great song with a great groove – just enjoy…

“In and Out” by Francie Moon and the Great Outdoors  from Francie Moon and the Great Outdoors

Two songs from New Jersey’s own in the shuffle.  By the way, one of the Francie Moon videos I added is from this past year’s Couch by Couchwest Virtual Music Festival.

“Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier” by A.A. Bondy from Divided and United: The Songs of the Civil War

Just before this song came up on the shuffle – I was feeling a particular vibe from the shuffle and I was realty hoping the final song didn’t harsh that vibe.  I mean, I like all of the music I add to my player, but because I have such wide-ranging tastes… okay, I think I’m over explaining.  Anyway, this old, old song from the American Civil War did not harsh my vibe.  In reading up, this song has been covered many, many times by a variety of artists.  I haven’t heard them all, but I can safely say that this is a great version.  All around the Nashville area, you can monuments to Civil War battlefields.  Also, just to wrap this shuffle into as neat a bow as possible…  The album from which this is drawn features new versions of Civil War era songs performed by relatively new “Americana” artists like A.A. Bondy and Angel Snow along side songs performed by some amazing Country music legends – including Dolly Parton.  Dolly’s cousin and former band member Richie Owens is playing the Rocking Roots Guitar Showcase with his band The Farm Bureau.

And that is a wrap…

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Friday, Saturday, and XTC Mix

Well Americana Music Association week in kicking into high gear here in Nashville.  So many incredible musicians in town, official and unofficial showcases and shows and whatnot everywhere you go.  Music that represents the pretty diverse collection of genres and subgenres that fall loosely or tightly under the big Americana umbrella… “It’s a big enough umbrella, but it’s always me who ends up getting wet.”

Forever, swimming against the wind or pissing into the stream or whatever, Ear to the Ground presents a shuffle which includes some 1950s Portuguese Fado music, some 1970s Afro-jazz from Nigeria, a 90s lo-fi band from Olympia Washington, some awesome alternative, jazz, funk, electronic music from Philly, a 90s Rock band from Knoxville, along with some other great stuff which should or could fit in nicely at Americana Fest.  Shall we?

“Home Sweet Home” by Taco Land from Home Sweet Home

My now famous quote is “Taco Land is everything you’d expect from a band from South Texas called Taco Land and nothing you’d expect from a band from South Texas called Taco Land”  This is the title track from their latest album… and it is not a Motley Crue cover.

“The Mooooooon (Version)” by Microphones from The Glow Pt. 2 Disc Two: Other Songs and Destroyed Versions

Okay, so I’m not too proud to admit that some young teens from Connecticut turned me on to this band… after hearing a killer cover by The Foresters, I decided to see what I had missed out on…

“Saturday Song” by Mustard from Mustard II – The Unnamed, Unfinished Album

A lot of life happened in the 90s, and I missed a bunch of great music.  h/t to the Feel Bad for You monthly mixtape (which is about due for a new edition) for introducing me to this now defunct Knoxville band.  I’ll have to see what else I can dig up.

“Sunshine” by Left of Logic from In Formation

From the city of brotherly love, comes the awesome sounds of Left of Logic.  A note on their Facebook page indicates that the band played their last show at the end of August and that “Left of Logic” is complete.  They left a great legacy of music, and hopefully in some combination or form, we’ll hear more music from these guys.

“Carmencita” by Amalia Rodrigues from 20 de Amalia

Amalia Rodrigues died in 1999. She was an actress and singer from Portugal and billed as the Queen of Fado.  This is some really awesome stuff.

“Ikom Allah” by Bala Miller and the great Music Pirameeds Of Africa from Ikom Allah

Did you know that Nigeria produces some funky grooves in the 1970s?  I didn’t, but now I do.  You have to hear this – video included, and you will have to move when you hear this!  By the way, the last two tracks came to my attention from the Peacefork blog put out by my friends Valued Customer. Trivia: I was first introduced to Valued Customer via their alternative hip-hop song, “Frank Ocean”.  Music is a weird and wonderful thing.

“You n Me n XTC” by Chris Stamey from Lovesick Blues

This has been my groove ever since I first heard it.  I mean, c’mon a former db singing about XTC – how can this not be all kinds of awesome?

“Friday Night Special” by Joe Sundell from The Hat Thief

Two days in a row… another great new/old folk song from Austin.

“Hitchens” by Brown Bird from Fits of Reason

We close things out with a cool song about the late writer Christopher Hitchens from a 2013 album by a band from Maine fronted by the late David Lamb. A really nifty way to bring us back to an Americana sound with subject matter maybe not what one might expect from Americana music.
