Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – A Czech at the Blue Line Mix

Be sure to “Like” Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

I saw a remarkable show at City Winery – Nashville last night.  It was a CD Release show for Darrell Scott’s new album which features the songs of the late Ben Bullington.  You can read my review on No Depression here.

On to the shuffle….

“In Between Drinks” by Tim Carroll

My visual interpretation of the awesome song that I get to hear at least once just about every week.

“An Arrow in the Gale” by Magnolia Electric Co.

From the 2009 album Josephine.  Jason Molina is very much missed in this world.

“Hit Somebody (The Hockey Song)” by Warren Zevon

A song about the importance of knowing your role and waiting for the right opportunity to rise above it. Or something like that… It’s Warren Zevon singing about hockey! What else do you want?

“Sleeping Bag” by Patrick Sweany

Patrick Sweany filled in for Tim Carroll a few weeks back for the Rock and Roll Happy Hour, and he did a mighty fine job.  This is an awesome song from his 2011 album, That Old Southern Drag.  Sweany is from Ohio but now resides in East Nashville.  He was worked with Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys among many others.

“Saint Valentine” by Gregory Alan Isakov

The South African born, American singer-songwriter with a song from his 2013 album The Weatherman.  This came off of a Noisetrade Bonnaroo sampler.

“Glacial Flood” by the transcendents

There is a reason I still check out as much of the music that comes through my e-mail as I can…  This band from New Zealand has rapidly become one of my favorites simply because their songs and music is so amazing.  They seem like descent people, too, and it will be good to know some people if I ever wake up and find myself in New Zealand…

“Love/H8” by The Danbury Lie

Interestingly, I have been reading a book written by someone named Dan Burylie.  I have no idea if the book is connected to this #E2TG favorite, but the cover of the book and the cover of the album (Choose Your Delusion) are identical.  So if the two works are not related there may be a lawsuit in the future…  come to think of it, the title is similar, too… hmm…

“Argosvinis Moni” by Imam Baildi

Also from that Noisetrade Bonnaroo sampler.  This is a band from Athens… such a great history of music from  Athens –  B52s, R.E.M…. oh wait, this band is from Athens, Greece.  Never mind.  Anyway, it some cool exotic sounding music to expand your musical vocabulary.

“Roberta Sparrow” by Grumsling

From the EP, A Church, On a Boat, In the Sea.  This highly creative Oakland, California band has captured my attention in short order.  I highly recommend the Philosophy of Time Travel if you want to know where the title of this song came from…

“Tying Ten Knots in the Devils Tail” by Townes Van Zandt

I kind of sort of think that maybe I featured this song before, but it may have been on one of my Facebook posting sprees… which you would know about if you “Liked” by Facebook page (link at the top of this entry).. hint, hint…  either way, it is Townes Van Zandt so even if this is a repost, you know what?  I don’t care… the song was written by Gail Gardner.

“Belly of the Beast” by Holy Sheboygan!

I had the wonderful opportunity to see Wisconsin based Holy Sheboygan! last month when they brought their little bus and inventive, upbeat music to Nashville.    They brought everything but the kitchen sink to the stage of Foobar… and it was kind of dark, so I’m not completely sure that there wasn’t a kitchen sink.. Cameron Carrus who plays bass for Darrin Bradbury and Tim Carroll among others is a long time member of this band.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – If You Don’t Know Mix

Getting back on schedule…

ICYMI:  Check out my review of Dale Watson and Rosie Flores at Exit/In.

If you are in Nashville this evening, head on over to City Winery Nashville. A great night of music is on tap with #E2TG Artist of the Year Darrin Bradbury kicking things off at 8:00 sharp so don’t be late. $5.00 to hear some really great people make really cool music.

“Love For Tender” by Elvis Costello and the Attractions

I don’t know about you, but for me any morning that starts off with Elvis Costello can’t be all bad.  From Get Happy!

“Tennessee Plates” by John Hiatt

A classic song from John Hiatt’s Slow Turning album. About stealing one of Elvis’ Cadillacs….

“My Felon Girlfriend” by Don Dixon

Don Dixon had a hand in creating the sound that dominated by musical formative years.  Best known as co-producer of the first two R.E.M. albums as well as the many other great records he produced, Dixon is also one hell of a songwriter.  This song comes from his most recent solo record called High and Filth and Borderline.

“Knowing Me” by J.R. Wyatt

A brief but really rad song from Empty Room Sessions.

“Don’t Say No” by Tom Tom Club

Another great song from Boom Boom Chi Boom Boom.  This runs counter to the message I got handed in school via Nancy Reagan. Hmm, who should I listen to? Nancy Reagan or Chris and Tina? What do you think?

“Lawyers, Guns and Money” (Warren Zevon cover) by Magnolia Electric Co.

Magnolia Electric Co covering Warren Zevon is truly sublime. RIP Jason Molina and Warren Zevon. This is from a Daytrotter session in 2009.

“Soul II Soul” by Flo Mega

Okay. So this was a random download from Freegal. Flo Mega is from Germany and this is some funky ass shit.  I rate it a “hell yes!”. From the album Mann uber Bord.

“Has He Got a Friend for Me” by Richard and Linda Thompson

This song came on as I began my solitary walk toward the office. A perfect somber song for this grey morning. From I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight.

“Nobody’s Singin'” by Matt King

This is the penultimate song from our run-through of Matt King’s stripped down album Raw.  As we await new music from King and his new band, Killing Street.

“Conclusion of the Railway Earth” by Jack Kerouac with Al Cohn and Zoot Sims

We close out the shuffle with ten minutes of Kerouac spitting the beat poetry. The recording includes some studio banter before and after the poetry.  From Blues and Haikus.

SHUFFLE:

  • “Seattle” by Game Theory from The Big Shot Chronicles (1986)

Our tribute to the late great Scott Miller is almost a month long at this point, and we have only scratched the service of the depth of his amazing musical legacy. This is the first of two Game Theory songs in the Shuffle today.

  • “Snow Song” by EndAnd from Mechanics and Energetics of Stilt-Running (2013)
http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/album=3959258905/size=venti/bgcol=FFFFFF/linkcol=4285BB/

The first of two tracks from the Brooklyn punk rockers. We dig deeper into their new album.

  • “Caribbean Sunset” by Luxury Liners from They’re Flowers (2013)

Luxury Liners is the new solo project from Carter Tanton of Lower Dens and Formerly of Tulsa.

  • “I Love You Soon” by EndAnd from Mechanics and Energetics of Stilt-Running (2013)

Our second look today at this awesome album.

  •  “I Turned Her Away” by Game Theory from Real Nighttime (1985)

Another listen to some classic sounds from this San Francisco band.

  • “Mango Lassi” by Valued Customer from Babylon Hill (2012)

Mango lassi is gaining popularity worldwide. It is made from yogurt, water and mango pulp. It may be made with or without additional sugar. It is widely available in UK, Malaysia and Singapore, and in many other parts of the world. In various parts of Canada, mango lassi is a cold drink consisting of sweetened kesar mango pulp mixed with yogurt, cream, or ice cream. It is served in a tall glass with a straw, often with ground pistachio nuts sprinkled on top.[1]”

(via Wikipedia) – some cool sounds and sweet treats from our good friends Valued Customer.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – If a Tree… Mix

Here we go into another week. Couch by Couchwest has come to an end, but you can relive the glory here:
We got 10 songs this a.m. so let’s get to it:

UK band, The xx are up first with VCR from the album xx. Be Kind and Rewind…

Next up is Portland, Oregon band Loch Lomond with the lovely Elephants & Little Girls.

East LA band Los Lobos have been around since the mid 70s, but their breakthrough came in 1984 with release of the T-Bone Burnett produced How Will the Wolf Survive?  We have A Matter of Time today which I actually converted from a vinyl copy of the out of print Slash Records compilation Slash Cuts.

In typical random fashion, Bruce Springsteen’s spare solo album Nebraska was the first CD I purchased (a few days before I bought my first CD player).  Atlantic City is our track today.

Beggars Banquet was released in 1968 and was the 7th studio album by the Rolling Stones.  Street Fighting Man  is just a great song.
The Sea and Cake come from Chicago.  Up on the Northshore from The Moonlight Butterfly album is a beautiful song that I fell in love with instantly.

Nashville’s own Will Kimbrough (via Mobile, Alabama) fights against his Southern upbringing by deciding to be Less Polite a politically charged song from his politically charged album Americanitis. (Hint: This album is unlikely to be played at a Tea Party Rally).

I honestly didn’t know until I started writing this post that Sam Prekop was in The Sea and Cake.  It makes sense, though.  Up above we have a link to an earlier release by Sam Prekop.  The song today, Arizona comes from a film called Pavilion by Tim Sutton.  Mr. Prekop contributed to the score. You can download your own copy of Arizona and stream another track called The Eve.  Stereogum will hook you up – here.

“Don’t forget the Motor City…”  Outrageous Cherry have been around for ten years and have nine full-length albums to their credit.  Thanks to Beyond Beyond is Beyond and Bang Bang Boogaloo for turning me on to the band. Today’s track, Unbalanced in the City is off of the band’s latest album Seemingly Solid Reality.
And finally, Magnolia Electric Co. have been absent from the public since 2009 due to on-going personal issues of founder Jason Molina. You can find out more about that  – here. We have the amazing song, Whip-Poor-Will from the album Josephine.
